Has anyone else experienced lag on games with custom roms? I've tried most of them and they are all very choppy when it comes to games

No problems here, but I've started to avoid installing my own kernels. Too many performance issues in the past.

Which custom ROM? Do you get UI crashes? (The navigation and notification bars flash in and out when they shouldn't and/or an error message about it)?
PA final stable build mainly, can play angry birds go flawlessly on stock but on pa it feels so choppy
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Free mobile app
Install CM11(Choppy only on boot) , and install Renders Kernel(r23 - Gpu OC to 533mhz gives a bit of boost)-don't install (r24) as it don't have all features.
Paranoid stable works terrible run soundcloud and you will know what I mean, however I had no gaming realated issues, rather some stability issues.
Also try to use diffrent governors ROW I/O, wheatley Cpu(or interactive) and Simple_Ondemand Cpu(Trickster Mod).
Setup Greenify, turn off doubletap2wake.
Uninstall Facebook(Hibernate Freeze Proof)-that will give you a lot more ram memory(rarely 45, more likely 78-90) , extremly increase stability-on stock-(I'm serious here Fifa 14 doesn't even run correctly into any gamemode).
If you want to have Pie & Halo then try to use CarbonMod, use the kernel I mention.

anybody able to play Dungeon Defenders flawlessly?
i like the game but it gets really laggy on my nexus s when theres enemies on the map. im thinking that this game requires a lot of ram which the nexus s does not have a lot. before i start the game i check my available ram. it varies from 120-150 each time i check. i have CM7 RC1 loaded on my phone with netacrhy 1.2.4 cfs.
anybody have the same problems?
Have you tried using a bfs kernel? I remember on the HTC desire, cfs always lagged more than bfs kernels, not 100% sure but just a thought.

thanks for the quick reply guys!
i tried over clocking my phone but its still laggy. im gonna try bfs now see if that fixes the lag problems.
well, bfs didnt work as expected. its just about the same as the cfs. still experiencing lag. did you guys have the same problems?
I am able to play dungeon defenders flawlessly. I'm using cm7 and 1.2.2 bfs netarchy kernel without overclocking. I have yet to experience any lag and play frequently.

i know some are going to flame me but...
do you use any task killers? i do, and it helps to keep my phone running smoothly. i rather decide when ram memory needs to be freed rather then let android decide. before playing dungeon defenders, i usually kill all the background apps first.
weird, no Task killers here and dungeon defenders runs flawless

runs flawlessly here too, even without task killers
Damn. I have a task killer but I still lag. Maybe I just have to do a wipe. See if that helps.

update: i restored my phone to factory default. 2.3.2 and dungeon defender plays better now. ill try to see what the cause of the lag was when i was on cm7-netarchy124cfs
I'm was using nightlies but just today I switched to rc1 and it works great just like before.

runing legles here.though it was after reboot and only 94MB in usage.
make sure you have enough MB's free.
and dont use task killer!!

reflashing made everything smoother.
RAM doesn't mean everything.
Its like, so many people think that having 24 GB of ram in your computer is the s***. The desire hd has 768 mb of ram, but that doesn't make it faster
Ive upgraded to the S3 gave my son my ns4g. He plays games on it and it keeps freezing up. Running rasbean. With matrix. Tried CM10 stable too.
Any suggestions on a rom and kernel?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
It is subjective to the game you (your son) are trying to play. Apart from that, check the CPU frequencies and use a bit of overclocked frequency. Also, try to shift the Governor
He played them on his evo4g I guess ill switch it back to that.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
try jellyshot rom with marmite kernel.you probably won't have any issues for games destinated for nexus s.i play gameloft games with severe demands and have no lags or forced closures.
Like others said previously, a little overclock can go a long way. Just be careful not to overdo it!
So yesterday i was researching about gamelags on STOCK ICS.
I found out this solution somewhere.
Initially i did not flash ardatdat's kernel
but
after doing this plus flashing ardatdats kernal lags have like vanished.
So just do this thing
1.Go to settings---> developer options and check 'Force GPU Rendering' and restart your phone.
2. Use Ardatdats kernel v4.2 beta 6 *HIGHLY Recommended*
Games tried :
1. Temple Run Brave (15 minutes of play..No lag)
2. World Cricket Championship (10 over game..no lag)
3. Farming Simulator
4. Plants vs. Zombies
5. Stick Cricket
6. Stick Tennis
7. Temple Run 2
8. Race, Stunt, Fight 2
9. Drag Racing 3D
10. Fruit Ninja
Hope it helps

+1 for this. Didn't try games, but it's good to have this option always set to on. Increases overall performance.
I tried gaming on stock ICS.
Did try unofficial JB on our phone. But then vibration problems.
Actually some nexus version had an ICS lag in scrolling and gaming.
So someone posted it as an answer.
I tried it for gamelags of our device and it worked.
(Obviously the nexus solution did not have include the ardatdats kernel part )
@adam sir: please help us with the vibration problem in Pacrom

Didn't notice it, but theoretically yes. It uses the GPU for rendering the UI. However, I have it always turned on, regardless of which rom I'm on.

So wasnt quite evident.
But i couldnt notice some MAJOR chunk of battery % vanishing in thin air
But the lags have finally gone on ICS (Hopes held high)
Rest lets see...

On ardatdat kernel use setcpu app to set both the cpu freq's to max(equivalent to performance governor). Then try a game...eg temple run...no lags.
But remember when u select performance then top level of clock will work and hence battery backup goes down.
@deep: buddy its my pleasure if i would suggest or make u understand the thing and become part of ur few moments.

Well if you know how to use SetCpu go ahead it will completely resolve the issue. (Never tried as i am not comfortable..but our senior members do recommend using it )
But if youre still not comfortable with the stutters we have to live with it till official JB arrives (maybe..on samsungs mercy :'( ) :sigh:
Atleast the frequency of the lags seems to go less.
My games even stuttered with PacRom :'( (stick cricket did )

Buddy apply it..and then restart your phone after 2-3 minutes.
If not working use setcpu and clock the minimum to 1000mhz i.e. Max=Min=1000mhz.

Hey guys, I'm running odexed 4.4.2 ROM and I've been using franco kernel for a bit now, tried all versions from r15 to r23. I've noticed that my phone does get extra toasty when playing games, or doing anything intense, even playing music. Decided to revert to stock, and issue went away. Has anybody compared franco to stock as far as performance goes, and has anyone had same issues with heat?

It may get hotter, but battery life is worlds apart. Search better battery stats in xda and let it monitor your system. Franco's kernel has way less wakelocks I find.

heat isnt an issue, unless you are normally reaching the safety shut off temp of 100C at a regular basis. now, i highly doubt that you are getting anywhere close.

Thank you for the info guys. Do you run the official Franco build? Or the linaro one? I tried both, linaro seems to sound better as far as it being more optimized, but day to day, didn't notice much difference.

linaro is just a buzzword, nothing else. in reality theres no difference. googles toolchain(gcc) might even be slightly better/more optimized.

Franco kernel is at least as good as stock kernel for idle battery drain. Much better with SOT in darker environments due to brightness changes.
Your heat issue is due to FK allowing the cores to reach 70c before throttling. You can change this value with the FKU app. Free version does not currently support Hammerhead, But the paid version does, and it's worth a few dollars.
Sorry if it is a noob question lol, but what is sot?

Hi,
Screen On Time...
I have 0 problems with franco's kernel.
Delete.
I see some people say they're not installing KitKat update. Why is that?
I don't own a shield (yet) so I haven't looked around enough to know.
Thanks!

apparently because some apps can't write on SD.
This can be solved when you're rooted.
Thanks for clarifying. I'll be rooted so I won't have to worry about that then.
