Hello everyone, I think I might have bricked my Xoom and I desperately need help.
I have a non-US WIFI/3G MZ601 Xoom - locked, not rooted or modded. Never updated the original Android 3.2 either. Only installed some apps, but nothing more.
Two days ago, after transferring some mp3s trough gMTP I think I ran out of free disk space on the Xoom and I got an error. I disconnected the Xoom from the program and then exited. There was no hint of a problem. After my battery died, I tried to reboot, but I get only the M-logo and after a while the system reboots. I was thinking that maybe the system won't start because the disk is full but it might be something else.
I tried Power+Vol Up - it reboots, but still hangs. I did Power + Vol Up and then Vol Down - I have the bootloader options and I can reach the Android recovery screen.
My main problem is that I badly need to download some data from it before resetting. It's important for my work and that's why I need a way to get my data out of the Xoom before resetting. I tried mounting it with mtpfs, but obviously it doesn't work without a running Android. I called the Motorola service, but they offer only a Factor Reset. And since all my info is on my internal memory (no external sd-card), they said I'd lose everything.
So my question is is there any way to reach the data on the internal memory without a working Android. Preferably a Linux solution, but I could find a Windows if needed.
I already used the Android recovery to erase the Cache - it didn't help.
After some research I found about some tools which Motorola offers. I wondered if using
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
would delete my users data.
I know it's easiest to Factory Reset it, but I use the Xoom for work, it's important for me to find a way to get that data out. Another option is for example to use some Data recovery tool after the Factory Reset, but I'm not sure if the Factory Reset reformats all the partitions and if anything is recoverable from it afterwards.
So...if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be very thankful!

AFAIK you can use adb to pull files off your xoom.
There is a Linux version. You have to download a lot of files plus the Motorola drivers for the Xoom.
There is a lot of info on this forum and elsewhere on using adb.
i'm not a Xoom genius and the following is only how i understand things, if i'm wrong someone please correct me
those fastboot commands only put the stock Motorola firmware on the device and will not wipe your user data. you have to format the internal sd card for that to happen which is a separate partition from the system, boot, and recovery partitions
if your tablet is still locked and Motorola can't help, then i suggest unlocking your Xoom and flashing a custom recovery and see if that lets you boot your Xoom or at least lets you get to it via adb shell. you can pull files off the tablet that way. it's command line, but it's something

Yes, I pulled my files with adb, which was great, since I was so not ready to lose them.
Afterwards, I Factory Reseted the Android, which fixed the boot, then I updated to 4.0.4, Unlocked it and Rooted it. Now, everything works, except for the 3G which is detected, but there's no data transfer. But right now I don't need it that much, so it doesn't matter. I love having a rooted device!
No 3G could be an apn setting problem. Whenever i couldn't get 3G working (rare on a Xoom i think) it was wrong apn settings.
I think you have to have 'date enabled' in Mobile Settings as well.
Yeah, but I rooted it with the Everest Nightly edition, so I suppose it's some kind of problem of the release. Because before rooting, my 3G worked fine, now I see the icon with the signal strength but when I disable the Wifi and enable the Data transfer, there's no connection. It seems that something is Disabling the Data transfer, but all the places from where this can be done are set to Enable. It's very strange.

My stock, untouched, unrooted HTC One S has randomly got itself stuck in a boot loop. It goes through the 'quietly brilliant' screen, onto the 'htc one' screen and then it restarts. I am desperately trying to recover my files and photos from the memory before I try a Factory Reset, because while these.threads mention ways to recover deleted files, these.posts from the OP suggest that it doesn't work for files lost to a factory reset.
Things I have tried:
Selecting the 'Recovery' option from the bootloader shows a black screen with green arrows on it for about 10s, but then the green arrows change to a red triangle with a '!' in it and it eventually reboots into the same loop.
Connecting to the phone using ADB over USB fails as the device is unseen. I believe this is failing because the phone is locked, and/or does not have USB debugging enabled on it??
The Fastboot tool does seem to be able to see my device, but from what I can tell fastboot is more used for flashing ROMs, and I'm not really trying to do this.
So my questions are:
Does anyone know of a way to access the files/folders on my device in its current state?
Since the SD card on the One S is fake, is there a way for me to fix the section of memory that boots the device, whilst leaving the storage bit untouched?
Any advice is greatly appreciated as I've got a lot of personal photos and videos on the device. I didn't think to back them up because on previous phones they've always been safely accessible on a physical card =(

Hi Tom,
I'm not familiar with stock recovery, as I unlocked and rooted my device almost immediately. So I'm not really sure, but here are some suggestions anyway:
Try and see if vol-up or -down gets you in a state where you can get adb when booted into stock recovery.
You can also try and fastboot boot directly into a custom recovery image, but that may not be possible with a locked bootloader.
If not, I'm afraid you're SOL, since unlocking wipes the storage.

I cant think of any way to recover from this situation except reflash ruu but then your sd card is wiped. Did you not activate dropbox?
What about vol down and power, rebooting into HBOOT? Then can't you dd if sdcard of?
Or fastboot pull /sdcard/ C:\Users\User\Desktop\sdcard

I'm in the same situation, it happened on Thursday night (the 8th), when did your's start? I'm struggling to find a solution for this as well. The closest I've got to anything is that on Linux Ubuntu, when I book the phone connected to my laptop one the second (out of three) boot screens it recognizes the device as an inaccessible HTC Phone, disappearing then once it reboots. Nothing is accessible.

Regarding fastboot, does it let you boot into an image that is stored on your PC? Is that how it works? FYI, my HBOOT screen says ***LOCKED*** on it, but the phone was bought outright so it is not locked by a provider.
@gazknight - I saw Dropbox more as a solution for the One S's limited storage capacity. Since I didn't expect to go over the fixed limit, I didn't really think I'd need the service. Backing up for security's sake would obviously have been a good idea but then I've never had a phone break quite so suddenly as this so I didn't think to do that.

Also, is it a LINUX command? I'm running Windows on my laptop, but with the Android SDK installed. @nickrr1 - Mine went bad just a few days before yours I think. I see what you mean, I think; on Windows, when I leave the phone connected via USB for the duration of its boot loop, a mounted drive does appear for just a few seconds, but if I click it it says "Please insert a disk" and then it's gone within a few seconds.

Locked means the bootloader being locked/unlocked, not the SIM's state.
dd if of should work after typing adb shell. Have you tried flashing a recovery in fastboot? I need the sdcard partition number though, for the dd to work.
It is fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (recovery should be named recovery.img and placed in the fastboot folder)

As I said, I'm not familiar with stock recovery and I don't have it installed.
After you select recovery from hboot, and before it reboots again, does it respond to the volume buttons?
Yes, you can fastboot boot into a recovery image without copying the file to the device:
fastboot boot recovery-cwm-ville.img (substitute the actual file name of the recovery image. but im not sure whether this requires an unlocked bootloader.)
As usaff22 pointed out, **LOCKED** means bootloader locked, not provider SIM locked.

He can not flash recoveries since his bootloader is locked.
The sdcard partition is /dev/block/mmcblk0p36
EDIT: Here is another thought:
Have you tried booting into safe mode? (Power on the device, when on the boot splash hold vol-down and keep holding until you feel a long buzz or until you see 'safe mode' in the lower left corner of the screen.) If not, you can try to fastboot erase cache and even fastboot erase userdata. This should not erase your sdcard, just your apps and app data, but it might get your device back into bootable state, if the bootloop was caused by a user app or some corrupted user data.

Have you tried the wipe user data option in HBOOT? Not clear storage, if I remember correctly there is another option to wipe user data.

It will not. dd must be run on the device. What would work (on a linux host) is this:
(adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmc0p36) > ~/rescued_sdcard.img
But still .. you would need to be able to get an adb shell first.
Thanks so much for your time and suggestions on this. I've tried a few things now, but to no avail so far...
ADB - Still no luck with this. I think this is expected because of the state my phone is in... I have read that it needs to be actually booted up, and with USB Debugging enabled for it to work.
Safe Mode - No joy. I can use a long press of Volume Down to get a long buzz, but then it still reboots a few seconds later.
Recovery Boot - Selecting Recovery from the HBOOT menu and then pressing/holding the Volume Up and Down buttons does not seem to have any effect. I'm not sure exactly when I should be pressing them, but I have tried a few different methods and it always ends up on the same red triangle screen.
Fastboot - This does seem to be connecting, but because the damn thing is locked I'm getting access errors when I try to do anything useful...
fastboot erase cache works, but then rebooting normally or with safe mode both fail as usual.
fastboot erase userdata fails with a "remote: not allowed" error.
fastboot boot ville_recovery_signed.img posts success at reading the image file but then it fails at the 'booting' stage with the same remote access error.
HBOOT wipe - My only two options relating to data at the top level menu are 'FACTORY RESET' and 'CLEAR STORAGE'. I have not tried selecting either of these, so I am not sure of any deeper options, but I did research these options and it does seem like they will likely wipe my SD data. I am wondering though if maybe the FACTORY RESET might save my data on the SD partition. This is the opposite of what an HTC support guy told me though.
Also I found a report of another poor guy having the same issue this week. Add 'www' to the following: peoplesrepublicofcork.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4528285 (soz, I can't post links yet)

So after a bit of back-and-forth with HTC's tech support over the last few days, I got some instructions from them to use the Factory Reset...
HTC: "...I would like you to perform a factory reset of the phone. This will erase all data saved to the memory of the phone, but will not clear the phone storage..."
ME: "...Will the Factory Reset really spare the 'storage' as suggested, or is this wording aimed at phones with a physical SD card?..."
HTC: "On the HTC One S there are 2 different types of storage. The phone memory and the internal storage of the phone. A factory reset will erase all data from the memory of the phone, but leave the phone storage intact, it is easiest if you think of phone storage as an internal SD Card. There are 2 settings on the phone which reflect this, a factory reset and the option to clear storage. If you choose a factory reset of the phone your internal storage should remain intact and your photos will not be wiped from the device."
So I did the Reset, and the phone now boots, but I've lost all my photos and videos. They don't show up on the phone; they don't show up on a mounted drive; they don't even show up using typical 'undelete' software on the mounted drive. Thanks for the great advice, HTC!
Now my last option is to follow this thread, but this will involve me knowingly voiding my warranty on a piece of hardware which I already know is potentially unreliable.
So I think I'm just going to give up....

I have exactly the same bootloop problem you described and I'm beyond despair. Over the past couple of weeks I've used an app on my phone (PCM recorder) to record interviews for my master thesis. I've backed up several of them, but not all... I have gone above and beyond to get these interviews and there is no way I'll be able to redo them. I really truly cannot lose these recordings!
I think at this point I'd rather even sacrifice my phone by physically removing the storage from it and somehow recovering the data from it, but I have no clue whether this is even possible.
I read a thread (androidforums. com/htc-wildfire-s/560123-unrooted-wildfire-s-bootloop-help. html - remove spaces in url) that describes how to re-flash the stock ROM when not rooted. Presumably this can fix the bootloop, while not deleting the internal storage. Does anybody know if something like this exists and works for the One S as well?

Running a RUU will erase your sdcard. So will unlocking your bootloader. Don't do it.
You can try booting up in Safe Mode (power down, boot back up and as soon as you see your boot splash (quietly brilliant) hold vol-down until youre fully booted.
You can try erasing your data and cache partitions in fastboot, and then booting back up.
Both of these suggestions were already offered in this thread so you probably tried already, but just to make sure.
Finally, you can look at the unbricking tutorial in the development forum, and see if the same method can be used to extract partition #36. Personally I've never had to unbrick/downgrade, but maybe someone familiar with the process can weigh in. If this is possible, you can then mount it and extract the files from it. Since you're not unlocked and you can't unlock (without losing your data) you'll have to be able to get into download mode by powering up holding vol-up.
I haven't really got any further with this. My One S now works, but I'm avoiding using it for now until I've imaged & extracted its storage for a salvage op (see the link in my post above) and I'm too lazy to go about rooting etc. right now in order to do this.
I had the exact same issue as you, multiple times now.
First time I did a factory reset and everything was erased (pics, videos, downloaded apps, etc).
After that I'm just doing clear storage - which removes all the apps that were installed and all configuration, but my photos, videos, and all other documents remain intact.
Fix bootloop without losing data
After my phone shut down because of the % of the battery, it was low, phone got stucked on samsung logo after power up. I dont want to lose data on my phone, how can i recover data first and then factory reset it, or to access device without losing data, is it possible? If its not, ill do the factory reset....
After the most recent update my phone got put into a bootloop that wouldnt stop for some reason, it would boot and then after I wanna say less than 20 seconds it would reboot itself, and just kept going on in this cycle unless I powered it off when it was booted. Anyway I've been trying everything I can to get the damn thing working again so I can at the very least get my pictures off of it without factory resetting it and nothing is working, and I sorta feel like I've made things worse. I tried flashing with Odin but after that the thing just stopped booting alltogether so that kinda limited my options a lot. Now I'm trying to sideload an update from an sd card which might work if i can find the right thing to sideload onto it but before it gets anywhere it tells me error in /sideload/package.zip (status 7) so either I just need a different thing to sideload or something's broken. Either way I don't know how to get it working cause I have no idea what I'm doing here so now I need help.

Sounds like you are in a bad spot. If your pictures are on internal storage then flashing anything in Odin will wipe that.
I think you need to accept that they may be lost.
not so fast, i've used home_csc in all my flashes and when I finally got one working all my stuff was still intact. Now i just need to figure out how to get it to stop bootlooping.

So, similar to Oske829 my phone ( Samsung Galaxy S10e ) has entered into a bootloop after a recent update that occurred roughly on February 06, 2021.
I am also experiencing the same symptoms as well:
My phone starts to boot up, then fails and Approximately 20 seconds after, it repeats that cycle. The phone continues to bootloop until drained of its battery then repeats this cycle again once if it is charged. **this is the current situation**
After playing around with the buttons, the only progress I've made is reaching the Download Mode. Ive yet to try odin or anything else and would like to ask for some help please! I really want to be able to save the data on there (pictures, music, apps, etc..)
Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

Download the latest official firmware with Frija tool (no download caps unlike websites like Sammobile etc). Just be aware that if you download and use Android 11 you wont be able to downgrade to Android 10.
After you have downloaded it unpack the zip and run Odin. In order to preserve your data flash the HOME_CSC file not the regular CSC... file. Once you unpack the files you will see.
The phone needs to be in download mode for flashing and battery is suggested to be at 40% or more.
Btw a good way to get out of bootloop and get the phone to shut down is to connect the USB cable (could be from charger or PC) and then press Volume Down+Power buttons to force a restart. It may be nessesary to do this a few times.
At one point you will not see the boot screen but instead it will show the lightning bolt charging logo and the percentage. After that you can simply unplug the cable and the phone will turn off.
In order to enter Download mode the best way is to start with phone turned off. Hold Bixby+Volume Down buttons and connect the USB cable from PC. Once you see the confirmation screen you can release the buttons and press Volume Up to continue.

So incredibly glad to hear I'm not a lone soul dealing with this issue. I've tried a whole bunch of things to fix this issue but nothing is getting me anywhere. I tried flashing android 10 but as that other lad said you can't flash older versions of android.
At this point I think my only chance of saving the phone is to wait for a new system update to release and flash that in case it somehow magically fixes the phone for some reason. I wouldn't recommend trying to flash atm because it doesn't seem to help currently and if you donk it up you'll lose your data which is not something either of us want to do.
I'll let you know what happens if I try flashing a future update.
Well i had an even bigger problem initially. Not only was my S10e bootlooping. My EFS partition was missing files (dont know how that happened). That meant that IMEI was blank and there was not network connectivity aside from Wi-Fi.
Unfortunately even the stock firmware flash does not fix EFS. Thankfully i had a backup (multiple actually) stored away including EFS. So with some fiddiling around in custom recovery file manager (TWRP) i manged to get that restored. I did lose bunch of pictures in intrernal storage tho. Thankfully it was nothing important. Now i keep everything on SD card and SD Cards backup in PC.
Now im trying to get the phone rooted with Magisk but the damn thing is not working.
This underscores the importance of regular (i had weekly TWRP) backups. I had backups of all partitions except internal data like pictures etc. Lesson learned i guess.
Hey RaXelliX thanks for lending a hand! Unfortunately I'm using a Mac Pro and Frija is a Windows exclusive *tears*
it seems that my next best alternative is to use Samloader instead of Frija, and JOdin3 instead of Odin. After some research ive realized that I am way out of my depth , but shall continue nonetheless. I'm gonna try your method with these alternatives and hope for the best, that sounds good in theory I was just curious to the thoughts of others more experienced.

There was a new firmware on Sammobile that I just tried flashing, didn't fix the problem, still bootlooping. I am officially out of ideas on how to fix this. I think there's something funky at the hardware/software level that's throwing a fit about having to run android 11 that's causing this, but I have no clue what it could be or how to resolve it. Not sure if there's anything i can do at this point to save my data.

You could try flashing a custom recovery (i suggest TWRP: https://eu.dl.twrp.me/beyond0lte/ S10e Exynos version) and the once in recovery connect USB cable to move the data off. If you succeed then you could wipe the phone and get out of bootloop.
When flashing recovery via Odin use the AP field and select the twrp-3.5.0_9-4-beyond0lte.img.tar file and make sure NAND Erase and Re-Partition are OFF. Auto-Reboot could be on or off.
This would touch only the recovery partition and will not wipe data unless you do it yourself inside TWRP.
There are a few caveats with this. The phone may complain about missing VBMETA header. If that's the case i will share a modified TAR file that includes that and TWRP itself. Or the phone could fail flashing custom recovery due to Vaultkeeper that prevents flashing unofficial binaries. This usually happens a day or two after flashing firmware. After that Vaultkeeper disengages.

Is this exclusively for exynos phones or can I run twrp on a qualcomm device?

I'm trying to unlock the bootloader the way you described but that doesn't seem to be doing anything, and any guides I'm seeing on how to unlock it all involve doing something that resets the phone which isn't what I'm going for.

You might be out of luck as Snapdragon versions do not allow bootloader unlocks. At least as far as i know. I wrongly assumed you had Exynos version. If the data is important the last resort might be to contact some data recovery company. Im sure they have tools to access the internal memory even if the phone bootloops or flat out refuses to boot.

I believe he already tried that and the phone is still bootlooping. Im betting that whatever causes the bootloop is in the data, the data he needs to access.
A bad situation all around because if he wipes the data it will likely fix the bootloop but he will lose the data. If he keeps the data the phone will keep bootlooping and he wont be able to access it. Although i would argue that the data you cant access is effectively lost anyway and that the proper functioning of the phone is more important.
I've heard that theres tools you can use to recover deleted data after resets and stuff since data doesnt get wiped when its deleted its just marked as stuff that can be written over. So I would think there would be a way for me to reset my phone to get it working and then recover the data with one of those programs, but the problem is from what I've heard you need a rooted device to do any of that and since I can't unlock my bootloader I don't think that can happen.
The one last thing I'm going to try before I seek out help from data recovery people is to try pushing the smartswitch apk onto the phone with adb and then hoping I have enough uptime to install it before the phone reboots cause I've heard you can use smartswitch in download mode to backup data, but I haven't found any guides anywhere about how this is done so I don't know if its actually doable.

Well I find myself here after 48 hours of s10e hell, with an almost identical issue. After a couple attempts and a trip to our local cell phone repair place, we ended up doing a factory reset, with the same hopes -- that the files were still there but the space marked as "free" and a 3rd party data recovery program could bring them back from the dead.
But they all require your phone to be rooted first - and this being my first venture into phone rooting I'm not really sure which route to go, or if it'll even be worth the effort. Does rooting the phone mean flashing it with a new OS, or simply unlocking superuser access so the recovery software can do its bit? (bear in mind, a lot of these products try to root the phones themselves, but none of them seem to work - I've tried about 4 different products thus far).
I'm convinced that if I can root this phone, the recovery software WILL find those lost sectors and recover the lost data, even after a factory reset -- there's plenty of youtube videos out there that say you can do this, but the rooting bit is what's got me tied up in knots!
huh.. jeah, latest update bricked my s10e too.
but my case, when power on phone, nothing happens, just black.. when conect cable to pc , then i can enter recovery and download mode..
till now nothing helped..
oem locked, frp locked, cant flash custom binaries!
hope next update will fix this madnes..
or need to find same firmware as update.zip what we can flash using stock recovery option (sadly saamsung dont give any update.zip files, i gues its money thing)
so, odin dont help, chimera tools dont help, and enginering combination file give some approval error to flash factory binaries!

well ,as far as i know, thease all recovery lost data works with HDD type disks, flash memory are out of luck..
because, i easy restored deleted data from my HDD, if it wasnt multiple times formated or writed full hdd , deleted, writed full etc.. but with SSD that software isnt working, due flash memory.. but, maybe im just to old, and there are new softs who can do that, just, i have not seen any jet!

So what are my options to recover image and video files that were on the internal storage?
Currently phone is locked and I will be able to unlock it in 7 days

I really want to recovery as many as possible images and videos which are my baby daughter photos and videos

Data recovery is hit or miss on non rooted devices. The methods that actually work and yield desired results require the device to be rooted.
But, you can try Diskdigger or Easus Data Recovery. There is no "guaranteed" to work method, just some that work better than others.

after searching a lot yesterday people said that these devices are now encrypted by default. so if you do a factory reset you have 0 chance to recovery anything. What you think about this?

My previous reply applies to all devices. Factory reset doesn't actually remove the data, it is still there, it is just tagged to be ignored, then gets overwritten by new data when the system needs the space to store the new data. This is true for all storage devices, including PC, USB drives, etc..
Try the data recovery tools I named in my previous reply, if it doesn't work, you'll have to root the device to retrieve the data, but even then, it still "might" not work.
but you are ignoring default data encryption that people mentions

Phone was working ok yesterday all day, then I has to take a flight to another city and timezone. When I arrived everything still was ok for about 1 hour, then I wanted to login in the hotel wifi and it wasnt showing the networks. Tried turning on mobile data ando it wasnt turning on either. Rebooted the phone, didn't work. Then I tried to go to the settings and I got an error message "Settings isnt working" and shuts the window. Another message that suddenly appears is HTC Mobile data Lite isnt working.
Tried with info settings > settings > clear data and cache. Didnt work.
Rebooted by holding power and volumen buttons, didnt work.
Went to boot options it says is locked and that ”File" wasnt found.
They boot to recovery gets stuck on the red warning with a triangle image.
Lastly the phone got stuck on reboots, after I do they security pattern it shows they splash screens and logos, reboots and asks for the pattern again.
Never flashed or did something with system files or kernels on this phone.
Wanted to try factroy reset but when I was able to go to the home screen and connect the phone to a Mac using the app AndroidFile Manager..? It said 8gb available to select, which seemed wrong as my phone was almost 60gb full, so wasnt sure it was going to be a good backup.
Any help on what can I do to backup ando solve the issue?

Clear system cache if that's an option.
Factory reset.
If that doesn't get it it will need a reflash. The flight may have caused a Single Event Upset, which is more likely to happen at high altitudes.
The hotel wifi is also suspect, root kit.
Lastly it could be a mobo failure or other hardware issues.
Is possible to clear cache if I can't access home screen? Any chance of backup before factores reset?

I think your stock rom has encrypted your phone's memory . If you want to S-OFF you can try a TWRP recovery otherwise you can install a RUU rom at home. All your data will be destroyed.
Figured out how to wipe partition cache...didn't help. Still stuck on boot loops.

So there is no method to pull my data out of the device before trying to flash something into it?
Try starting it in safe mode. May take a few tries.
If you get it into safe mode, grab the data.
That's probably your last hope.
This is one big reason I always use a phone that supports an SD card. I use the SD card as the data drive; all critical data goes here. I then redundantly and regularly backup the SD card.
The data drive provides a buffer if the OS crashes/burns and most times is unaffected.
Everything I need to do a full reload/restore is on my data drive. It's time staggered backed up on multiple flashsticks and hdds.
I've lost whole databases before; lessons from the U of hard knocks tend to stick... and suck.

Try a few more times... play with it.
Been trying, keeps rebooting after entering the security pattern.
I can go to emergency call, it shows com.android.phone is not working but if I click wait after a while it shows the phone UI, I can take screenshots and move the volume bars... one time I don't know how or why, I left the phone while I read something else, on the pattern screen and I had the "Do you want to transfer files" message ... so this gives me hope that I will be able to either go to the system 1 time, or that the ADB is detected so I can pull data.
Tried fastboot boot twrp.img from power shell, but got the warning device won't boot. I guess because I didn't unlocked it and wipe the data first.
Found stock ROM that matches my CID/MID/Carrier, etc. Can I use this to flash something into my phone and fix the booting problem without wiping data?

The problem is likely in the user data partition itself. Start flipping firmware around all bets are off. Be a lot safer if you could get it into safe mode to retrieve the data.

Gonna keep trying to enter system then, maybe I get lucky.
The zip I downloaded had other zips inside and I can't open or extract them, windows says they are not valid. So I downloaded a different ROM from a different site, and had the same issue. Is this normal? Don't want to be flashing corrupt zip files obviously

The only boot loop I had where I needed data eventually booted into safe mode by itself after a couple tries at normal booting, convenient.
The next time it happened, a few days latter I was ready, lesson learned, always backup data.
As for the files, you're in deeper then I ever had to go. A factory reset be easier and safer if the rom isn't the source of corruption. You got yourself between a rock and a hard place. Personally I would have written the data off by now and factory reset. Of course that's because almost all the data was backed up.
Use the exact same rom.
Someone here can spot what's wrong though with your methods... have patience.

The top bar has a lock and only NFC is turned on. Can't pass that screen.

Didn't have one, then I inserted it again, no change. This was the original problem when I got in to the hotel, couldn't turn on wifi or mobile data.
Not sure what else to try. Wanted to try with a custom ROM or something, but can't unlock bootloader, because I can't get the identifier token since I can't get to the debug settings to turn on OEM unlock.
Fastboot oem unlock command is giving me an error.
The status of my software (on the bootloader) says modified, not sure if is it because I tried to boot a twrp.img (but afaik I understood should have been wiped after a reboot)
Extracted the zips with the RUU tool and got some img files, maybe I should try to flash some of those files.
Before you try anything else get the right procedure from an expert here. Otherwise you may trash the one or two shots you might have have.
I'm not that expert but there are members here that are. Sorry to see you having so much trouble...
I had the same problem,
This is processor fault .
the solution that i found to solve this problem is turn off the phone and heat the back cover under the camera using heatgun or hairdyer for about 30sec, don't make it too hot, then power up the phone and long press hardly the back cover under camera using your tumbs while HTC logo comes up. This makes my phone succesed booting up and the signal show up again. Once the phone turn up, just backup everything.
If the signal not showing up and wifi not working , you can use bluetooth tethering or using "gnirehtet" for reverse usb tethtring from computer.
*important : when the phone turn on, go to setting to delete the lock pattern/pin to make your phone not locked.
