"OK Google" from any screen - General Questions and Answers

hi there,
I've looked around on XDA a bit but haven't found anything yet so here's my question:
Since 'OK Google' is available from any screen now since the last Google Search update was released, is there any way/hack to make this feature work outside of the states (I'm in the Netherlands)?
If I open the voice settings in Google Serach the option just doesn't appear. My phone is the Nexus 5, language is set to English (US), the ok google thing is working from the home screen or within search.
thanks!!

Here in germany this function is not implemented, too. Im looking forward for a fix/update soon...hopefully...

Would love to know this. Am in the UK on an unrooted Nexus 4. Don't have the option to start it from any screen.
From what people say, Google activates it server-side on an account-to-account basis, but what I am not sure of is is this valid only for people within the US or people elsewhere also get it (once it gets activated for your account) if they set their language to English (US)?

It's working since this morning for me. Looks like Google removed the US-only restriction!

Yes, I had it on English US all the time. My native language is German and Google Now is missing most features in German unfortunately

Does Bing Vision work for you?

I just updated my phone to 7720 from beta 2. However Bing Vision by default isn't working. I have to go to regions and change the search locale to USA.
I was under the impression that UK was one of the regions where bing services would work?
Well, US here. Bing vision works fine for me.
I'm in the USA and it works great on my Samsung Focus 1.3, on official mango and Samsung update.
As a UK user, I only get the option to scan QR codes and Microsoft Tags! What happened all the other stuff advertised!?!

Founda hack online...Results may be for USA only though. I guess that is why it was disabled!

Sorry for the trouble you're having in the UK. In the US, it is AMAZING. Point it at a book or DVD cover, and within 3 seconds it gives you a link to find the product. Same with bar codes.
Simply go to settings -> region and language -> scroll all the way down to "Browser and search language" (don't know if it's really called that way, I'm just translating it from German). Change it to "English (USA)" and you're all set for Local Scout and full Bing Vision.

It does work as a showcase feature, but I wish we had the results for the stores in the UK.

Google Now - wake up word (hotword)

Hi.
Does the hotword "Google" work for you in the newest stock OTA for Google Now? For me it does not... Is there a way to enable it?
(if you don't know what I'm talking about check out this clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8ePUYp6HPU )

Ok - I think you misundestood me. Google Now works fine for me, with pictures and everything. Only the hotword search does not work for me. (So you can use it hands free, only say e.g. "google, who is the president of united states?", without touching the screen and/or buttons)

Same issue.
I have OTA Jelly Bean on my Nexus S.
Voice Search works fine with the exception of the hotword.
So when I say "Google" on the Google Now screen nothing happens.

I'm pretty sure this hot word feature was removed due to Apple's lawsuit, too similar in functionality to Siri.
I know you're talking about the OTA update, and I'm running hp420's rom on my NS4G, so there are likely differences, but when you open up Google Now, what does the search bar say? Does it just say "Search" or does it say (as mine does) "Search, or say Google"??
Yeah, I had it in the first 4.1 builds, then once the official 4.1.1's started appearing it was gone. This was after the incident where they had to stop selling Galaxy Nexii for a week. It looks like that feature was dumped to get the injunction lifted.

AHHHH that explains it. Thought I was going crazy.
I'm sure you could flash an older version of Google Now taken from one of the ROMs where it is functional.
Hmm, I thought the lawsuit with Siri is regarding the result of the search, nothing to do with how the search is triggered right? There's no like "siri" hotword or something.
However, I don't really get the purpose of this hotword, as I will still need to unlock the phone and press the Search button anyway, might as well just press the "mic" icon on the top right at the google search "widget"?
That's my best guess on the issue, it makes sense. It appears that this as the only thing that changed for the official 4.1.1 release. Or maybe google deemed it not worthy of the Nexus S, like Face Unlock... Wonder if Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus might still have this feature.

To have results like in the video you have to change Google Now language to English US and force searching on google.com (in google now settings).
The hotword is only a "cool" feature, with practically no use (unless it would work globally, not only with the google now screen) but I would like to test it out

JB voice search speaking?

How can I make the voice search to speak the answers like in the Nexus 7? That doesn't work for me, it only does a google search..
Any help?
Not all searches will be answered with built in tts, just some pre determined ones for example weather forecast

I just discovered that if I set the system language (not the voice search language) to english it works.
Do you know how to make it work if I change the system language?
Thanks

Well, everything is possible in theory, but I don't think anyone will bother making a mod for this. But who knows?
As it doesn't even work with language setting English (UK) then I wouldn't know if it will be extended to other languages.
Obviously it would be a lot more widely usable.
I am lucky, I can have English (UK) for system language setting and set English (US) for Google voice search language

voice search is wording in all languages (including my native CZ), but "OK Google" in US English only

Personalized Voice Recognition

My issue is over Personalized Voice Recognition in Google now which helps my friend to only open when he speaks but in my nexus 5 it doesn't happen like that.Anyone can say google now and then it opens what is the solution for it ?.I tried to turn it by Settings > Language & input > Voice Search > Personalized Recognition. But the tragedy is that, I don't have option called "Personalized Recognition". I have attached the screenshot of my Settings > Language & input > Voice Search. Please look into my problem and please have a good new for me. I bought my nexus 3 days before as it was launched in India. My friends mobile is from India and we also got the headphones too.

How it works then ?
Personalized Speech Recognition is more for teaching Google to understand how you pronounce certain things. Moto X is really the only device that teaches the phone to only respond to you, which is part of the reason why it's software features are so awesome. Many tech reviews did not understand this point, they simply saw the result of it. Now you can be one of the people to be in the know that Moto and Google are extending the capabilities of Android's voice recognition! I've not seen single review of the Moto X that realized what Moto and Google were doing that was special. Google's implementation is great, but the Moto X goes beyond that, which is exciting for future Google/Moto devices.
Now, if you use Personalized Recognition enough, it MAY behave like that, but I doubt it will do it consistently and it's not designed that way.
So let's say you turn it on. Now, every time you use STT, look at what the phone enters. Anywhere you see a word or phrase that's underlined with a grey line, that's Google telling you "I think this is what you said, but I'm not completely sure". Now, if it's wrong and you TAP on that underlined word/phrase, you'll see it's suggestions or what it thinks. If one of the suggestions is the right word/phrase, SELECT IT. WHEN YOU SELECT IT, it tells Google to REMEMBER that you say that word/phrase a certain way and it will record that. You can view ALL your recorded corrections on your Google Dashboard. I currently have 319 recordings. This makes using Google STT VERY GOOD for me, it knows all the little nuances in the way I pronounce things.
Now, your other problem is that the option is not in your screenshot. I don't know why that is. Anytime I've ever flashed Gapps to a ROM, it's always been an option for me. Are you flashing some kind of minimal or light version of the Gapps? Try flashing the full Gapps. All I can do is point you to the help page: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/186263?rd=1
Also, I want you to realize this also applies to the keyboard, and I don't just mean adding the word to your personal dictionary. If you're typing and you tap a word in grey and correct Google enough times, it will learn, though it does seem to store the swearing preference locally rather than on the server. For example, I always turn OFF the swear blocking thing. I don't like being censored by my own keyboard. But, every time I flash a new ROM I have to re-teach my phone that I meant to say f**k or suck and NOT duck or tuck or whatever. This is even if I restore my personal dictionary, which certainly has some colorful entries. Google does this because you might not want to text your boss or wife or child something obscene. But be certain, when you correct Google's grey underlined words whether written by keyboard or speech, the phone and/or the Google servers DO learn... That's one of the benefits of the "neural network" that they like to tout about themselves, and it's one of the main ways that they are innovative in a way that Apple certainly is not.
HTH.
Actually what i wanted to know is that what makes my Personalized Voice Recognition option disabled for me and I am no more into the android nerd so I don't know what gapps is and my nexus 5 is sock same like my friends but i dont have that Personalized Voice Recognition option.

If you're on a completely stock phone, you should probably read the Google Help documentation. The answer is most likely there, and everyone here is going to assume you've modified your phone in some way.

Well, the screenshot provided shows English (US). I don't know. Maybe he uses Google Apps for businesses and it's blocked? I really don't know. Rooting wouldn't remove it. It was there for me from the moment I unboxed mine.

I know this thread is a little old, but I'm having a very similar issue. I have actually contacted google tech support who have told me the Google Now app is only officially supported in the US. Henceforth, unless you are actually located in America, the 'personalized recognition' check box doesn't even show in your menus as you can't use it. I should know as I coughed up for a Nexus 10 AND Nexus 5 and it doesn't show the option on either. (Im based in the UK).
I don't know why Google won't let users outside the US use the 'personalized recognition' function. My British accent is very clear and distinguishable and therefore it would probably be easier to recognize my vocal inflections than someone from the deep south of America per se.
Google banged on about the inclusion of Google Now in the latest KitKat version of Android and the truth is when you dig a little deeper, a few of the important features including 'personalized recognition' are not available outside the US. Google promised support outside the US over 3 years ago and it has yet to materialize. Personally I'm not holding my breath
How your friend has it in India is beyond me . . . .

Quite a few people are complaining about this to Google on their forums. If you are an android user AND English speaker AND live outside the US AND want to use the 'Personalized Recognition' service you can show your support on the Google forums here:
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/nexus/f912lYp8Ea0/FiX-_SfZHS4J
Lets be honest, the more people who complain, the more likely it is you will get the service. You opinion matters!
