Major battery drain - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, another member with yet another battery drain thread. I could have asked my questions on an existing thread but didn't want to hijack anyone's thread.
From full charge I'm losing 3-4% battery within 2 hours.
I'm rooted with custom recovery and stock ROM.
I have WiFi on during sleep only when plugged in.
Location services all turned off.
Any help massively welcome.
Here are a few screen shots for info.

Did you look at the stickies??

[/COLOR]The very first thing to try is turning off WiFi off when screen off. Something is waking it up constantly. Leave WiFi on. That may alone fix the issue.
Try it first anyway.

Edit: you did look at the stickies. Lol. Good work! ? I was thinking, wow....just saw this same issue somewhere.
My bad.

That's the first thing I thought, it's not doing the battery any favors to have the WiFi flip on and off like that. WiFi is easier on the battery than data, so unless you have data disabled and are switching over to voice/SMS only it's more efficient to idle over WiFi.
That might not be the case if you're attempting to use a WiFi with a much weaker signal than your data connection. However in this set of screenshots it looks like a mix of weak and strong mobile connection which would cause extra drains (especially the red full drops).
Biggest issue is all that awake time though.

dont waste your time looking for a cause, google play services is biting you. its a kmown current issue with the play services. i used to use the disable service app to disable all location services from the play services app, and used to fix it for me.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.
I've turned WiFi on always and still the battery is draining fast. 4-5% within 2 hours.
Android system is a big drain. No idea why. Google play services is currently at 5%

Try using CPU tuner. I've used it on all my devices thus far and have had great battery life thus far. Average full charge on high usage lasts about 14-16 hours

Try also to change kernel, you are rooted so there are no problem, i suggest you to try the big bum kernel that you can finde here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/kernel-bum-5-t2774572 it's simply a franco kernel with some optimization andi like it so much! I've no google play service in battery info and it's update very often!

why is "google search" a huge battery drain

I got my n5 for couples weeks now. In the first week, the battery is ok, with average usage, it will last for at least a day and a half. Since I installed a lot of apps, the battery started to drain much faster. Could not even last a day with not too heavy usage. I took a look at battery report today. Surprisingly "Google Search" is the #1 battery drain (~60%). In the three hours since I unplug the charger, the battery life came down to 50%. All I did was checking emails and browsing now and then. I even have DU battery saver installed and optimized the system quite often. But it didn't seem to help too much. I see someone complained that "Google Play Services" can be a battery killer but google search? Anyone having similar issue?

Google Search uses a lot because it has "google now" and with the Nexus 5 and the always rendering "okay google" voice search, it sucks hard on battery. Once you install more apps and add more info to your device, Google Search/Google Now, still broaden the search criteria to all of that info on your device.
Disabling Google Now and voice search will dramatically save you some battery life.

The issue with this draining your battery is that you have location turned off, if you turn it on and leave it on you will not get the battery drain. With it off Google search is constantly looking for the location and cannot find it which is what is draining your battery. Had this issue and once I turned on location and left it on, no more drain. Hope this helps!

I found some old posts with similar issue. It appeared that the updates of google search have a bug which is killing the battery. I have uninstalled the updates, and so far so good. But you brought up an interesting point cuz I thought havingn location on is like having the 3G on which takes up a lot of juice. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks.
Yeah no problem. Also I'm running it with those updates...

Yes, but I was using the tablet which is also running KitKat. The Google Search showed up low in the list for the tablet but did not show up at all in the battery usage for the phone. I do have some of the options turned off such as Personal results and most of the options in "Everything Else."

Back in 4.4 this solved my problem.
Now that I've updated the OS to 4.4.2, the problem has returned but there are no google search updates to remove. :crying:
Could you guys who've solved things by enabling location services tell me exactly what settings you have used?
The most stupid fix

I had the same issue tonight.
I also had no connection to Google Now even though my WiFi was on. (Check if you have the same issue) if you do, just restart the phone.
If not delete the google search cache.

I just bit the bullet and did a full factory reset
No problems today but now issues of Moves taking all the battery and strange things like wifi taking the battery even though wifi is turned off
If these issues are not sorted soon, I'm considering going back to 4.4 or just ending my nexus 5 experience.
ive been having the same google search battery drain issue for a while now. I've been speaking with Google Nexus support folks, but to little avail. I even ordered a replacement Nexus 5, however, the new device is experiencing the same wakelocks. I will try to keep location on to see if that makes a difference. Haven't tried the uninstalling app updates for Google Search yet.
I have Google now completely disabled. And I don't see Google search coming up in any of my battery stats.

38R - ~30 battery drain back

Hey all. I'm stock, but I flashed 38R yesterday morning. All day yesterday i was getting great 6-8 idle drain and had about 4 hours screen on time through about 45% battery, but today I'm back to around 30 idle drain. Literally nothing changed between yesterday and today.
The culprit seems to be Android System. This morning, my wifi connection displayed as NULL (wife's Nexus 5 stayed connected just fine), but I was able to get that connected properly again. Could this NULL wifi connection have something to do with the drain?
Any ideas on why this may have reverted to the 33r drain? Like I said, there is literally nothing different with the phone other than a reboot this morning.
Have you tried ART?

You need to investigate exactly what is draining your battery by using BetterBatteryStats or something like that.

That isn't going to help if an app or service is causing a wakelock.

How easy is it for the average user to use bbs? They can always use greenfiy donate version, that can show you services/apps constantly running?

Do you have your brightness cranked all the way up? That'll drain your battery pretty quickly. Looking at your stats that's the only thing I can think of since your screen is using so much battery.

[Q] Android system draining battery

About a week after I got this phone, android system began to drain a lot of my battery. I turned off sync, disabled a lot of apps, and adjusted Google now, didn't seem to help. I don't know what else to do. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem except it is Call Standby, no one could answer it with a proper fix, though apparently it is VoIP, sadly we can't disable it on VZW S6.

Try clearing cache in recovery, I heard that fixes it.
For Cell Standby drain see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ow-to-significantly-increase-battery-t3109799
Thank you!
Help please!
I would also LOVE some help with this too. Currently, Android system is taking up 29% of my battery resources and cell standby is at 10%. I think I've exhausted all possibilities too. I've tried wiping the cache partition, factory data rest, odin back to stock, advanced calling on and off, changing the WiFi sleep policy and nothing seems to tame either one of those from being at the top of my battery stats. I struggle to get 3 hours of SoT. Gsam regularly says that WiFi active uses 40% - 50% of the battery. Any ideas what's going on or how to fix it? I am amazed at some of the screen shots I see with people easily getting 5+ hours of SoT. Ps, I'm on VZW.
What are you running? Stock now? Clean Rom? Try downloading Better battery stats in the Play Store, see if you can get a better handle on what's running more specifically. Have you removed all Verizon's bloat?

And yes, I've disabled all bloat and unused apps.
What I would do is root, and flash Clean Rom 1.5. Then try that and see how you do after that there's a few things you can do that might help if you don't see a jurassic change. Keep us updated though. But thats where I would start.

You also can try to turn off things like smart stay… auto brightness helps if you turn it off and turn your brightness down manually. And make sure if you do flash a rum to let it settle for 3 or 4 days before your give up hope.

Major battery drain from Phone Idle and Android OS

Here are some screenshots.. These 2 are just eating the battery all the time, I thought 7.0 was meant to save battery but it's a constant drain..
happens with me and with many. but it seemed that after some days, the mobile is adapting to the running applications and the battery usage is getting better... still not perfect, and those (android, phone idle, and google services) have the most usage, but better than before.

I really hope so.. I think this is a clash of Google and Sony battery saving efforts.. But more of a issue with Google.. Sony in the past have proved their battery stamina mode was ahead of its time..
