[Q]Nexus 5 boot loop at Google logo! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been using Nexus 5 since Nov '13, but this is the first time i'm facing a serious issue in my device.
I was browsing through Chrome and my Battery was 73%, all of a sudden my device rebooted and here comes the main issue/problem.
My device is suffering a boot loop only displaying the google logo for 3-5 seconds and again it reboots.
Occasionally the boot animation starts but no success, again it reboots.
I tried to enter fastboot menu, it enters but it doesn't stay there for not more than 2 seconds. So I can't make any choice over there.
I tried all the combinations (VOL UP+ Power, VOL DOWN+Power, pressing all the buttons), but its of no use.
My device is out of power now.
Even when I plug my device to charger/computer its not showing the battery charging animation instead the reboot loop occurs.
I suspect it can be a problem with the power button in the board.
What do you guys think?
Is there any Solution for this weird problem?
hoping for possible and positive replies.
My device details:
I'm running Stock Android 4.4.4 with stock kernel.(not modified any system files)
TWRP recovery V 2.7.1.1
UNLOCKED ( @present Locked)
ROOTED. @present Unrooted)

Try pressing the power button hard and see if it helps. Probably a power button failure.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I tried holding the power button for more than couple of minutes, No use of it.
While charging I can't even completely turn off the device, the bootloop occurs continuosly.
I've kept in charge for about 30 minutes but no change in its behaviour.
I haven't recorded the video, I searched youtube and found the exact problem.
here is the video

this is what happening to my device.

As I said earlier, it's most probably a power button failure. RMA the device or get it repaired at a LG service center.

I think its the only solution available.
Can i claim warranty?
Because my device is unlocked and rooted.

Yes you can. Google don't care about root and unlock, just like LG in case of nexus 5 because it is a google phone.

If you've bought your phone from google play store, then RMA it. Google accepts rooted/unlocked devices as well. However, LG is a different story altogether. Here in India, they don't provide warranty if the bootloader is unlocked. Whether it's a nexus device or not. You will need to check it up.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for clearing my doubts.
I have decided to reach the nearest LG care and look up for a solution.

My deviced turned on.... but after 5 minutes its off again
by making some irregular presses in the power button. the device turned on.

I have the same issue happening here. All the place I go searcing for an answer andthey say that it is related to software. I suspect too that might be something to do with the power button. I've tried to open it, took of the motherboard, but it seems to be okay.

It might be an issue with the power button.
In my case it was the power button, which tends to rattle and its not fit enough.
As I lost the copy of bill, i can't send the device to LG care.
So today morning I tried pressing the power button and as soon as the google logo appears I started to tap fast at the back cover with my finger right behind the power button.
SURPRISE! the device booted succesfully and was using for about couple of minutes.
Again it started to boot loop.
did the same procedure to boot. now my device is running for more than three hours and I don't know when it would again go to bootloop.
Its just the problem with my power button and I will soon get the bill copy from my retailer so that i will send the device for repair/replacement.
Meanwhile I've locked my device and set the tamper flag to false.
EDIT:- Now my device is back to normal. Thanks for your valuable responses. Its just the power button failure.

Useless service centers!
Today I went with my device to LG service center, but they were not ready to accept my words regarding this issue.
Surprisingly I found almost more than 6 peoples who bought their Nexus 5 for the same reason.
The technical person in the service center said that it might be due to software update and he suggested a silly solution, After each OTA update he asked me to uninstall each and every app and reinstall again.
I was repeatedly arguing him that it was a Hardware problem and its related to power button, he is not ready to take my words.
I also explained that when the problem existed in my mobile, in OFF condition if device is shaked too much it turns ON without even pressing the power button.
As many of them were waiting there with the same problem I just showed live demo of the problem.
Finally they said if again the problem occurs we should remove the cover and disconnect the battery and then again reconnect it.
Really frustrated spending a whole day in the service center. Main reason is the person in the service centers and technically backward and they were not able to understand the problem.
Is there any other solution available other than service center (Is there any possibilites of contacting google tech support directly) so that my power button gets repaired before the warranty ends!!!!!!

THANK YOU!!! This is the most helpful tip I've found so far! I started tapping its back part while charging the battery, and then I was able to turn it on, but when I quit tapping it the phone shuts down. It is really something related to the power button because the phone was locking itself constantly while it was working. I made some progress and I will keep trying until I make it work permanently. If you have any more helpful tip, please, share it with us! I've been trying to fix it for 3 weeks and Im getting crazy with this! Also, I moved to Brazil and there's no warranty here, so that's why Im trying to fix it by myself.
Did you contact Google and get it finally fixed?
Thank you and good luck!

i faced the exact same problem..
initially i thought it's a software problem..but in reality it was a hardware fault.. power button was stuck may be..
after repeatedly pressing the power button phone finally booted up..
thanks for the tip

I have the same problem I don't know if I can give the phone to LG care cause I'm in Mexico and I shop my nexus in usa. I have noticed that if I unplug the phone to the charger while Google logo is on the device turns off

Started happening to me a few hours ago....
tapping close to the power button seems to work but it shuts down once u stop.
attempted to repair it myself but im not seeing anything physically wrong with the tiny power button (inside).
leaving the phone off for a few hours. hope that works.....anyone else found a solution besides returning it to Google?
edit: I solved the problem!!!! (voided my warranty as well. lol)
the physical power button (internal) was stuck.
1. I opened the nexus 5 (using any repair guide)
2. I located the internal power button (very tiny)
3. I gave it a few taps with the base of my screwdriver (not too hard but not too soft either)
after re-assembling (partially) the phone came on for about 10 minutes but the problem started happening again so i disassembled it once more.
THE FOLLOWING MAY NOT BE AN ACTUAL FIX (I PROBABLY JUST GOT LUCKY)
4. (looking from above) the power button is square (half is white and the other half is yellow).......i used a razor blade and gently separated the two halves....not completely separated, just a tiny bit. completely separating the white from the yellow would destroy it.
5. gave it a few taps again and now the phone is working fine.
I hope this helps someone who is unable to return their phone to Google.
I tried to explain what I did as clearly as possible. I will be happy to answer any questions asked.

Same problem
Hey Guys. Same problem here. I was sending a whatsapp message and boom. OFF. I tried to connect it to power but it turns on for a few second, shows google logo and the unlocked bootloader and turns off and again and again..it was at 52% battery charge....I'm unlocked, rooted and on cm11. Reading here, i have understand that it's a hardware issue, and i've bought it since 8 months, so can I RMA it? I'm in Italy and i've bought it from play store..
SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH

What did you finally do? I have the same problem.

Workaround to keep your data
I had the same problem already twice. It appears that the cache partitions on the phone is corrupted and therefore Android won't boot. As long as you have an unlocked bootloader you can bring your phone back to life without loosing your personal files. If your bootloader is locked, you have to unlock it first( see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905). This is how it worked for me:
Connect your phone to the PC and bring it into fastboot mode
Download the Factory Android image from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
extract the images from the zip
run "fastboot flash cache cache.img"
restart phone
Done
I hope this can be of help.

Nexus 5 Bootloop Problem

Ok so I'm very annoyed and I'm not getting much help over at the google product forum. Ok so here is the problem, I'm walking with my phone in my hand on friday and it randomly vibrates so I looked at it and saw the google logo (not the 4 colored circles) then the phone shut off. I thought I accidentally turned it off so I tried to turn it on and nothing, plug it in to a charger and the logo keeps coming on then off and the phone has been looping like this ever since, as soon as you plug it out it completely turns off. Now I have tried the bootloader option but as soon as I see the menu come up..the phone reboots again..so I basically have a $400+ brick on my bed, so upset as I have important things to do and this is a major set back. Any idea on whats going on or how to fix it? Thanks in advance.
you need a replacement. it should be under warrenty from either google or lg.
Wow, this is a new way for bricked nexus 5. 4 phones with endless bootloops even on bootloader this weekend :crying:
RMA like said upstairs.

Hi, I'm one of the four as mentioned by GUGUITOMTG4 above haha.
You could try repeating the following steps in order:
1) Vol down + Power button for 30 seconds
2) Vol up + Power button for 30 seconds
3) Vol up + Vol down + Power button for 30 seconds
Rinse and repeat until you get the bootloader screen to stay. Mine only stayed after I threw it on a table though, as mentioned in my thread linked here. Haha good luck!
I was afraid you would say that..i bought my phone from best buy and I don't live in the US, don't know if google would let me send it back and even if it would probably take months to send and get a replacement :crying: . I did some research on the forum and numerous people that experience this same problem ( some on samsung devices) blame it on a "stuck" power button.(some suggested repeatedly playing with the power button to try and fix it) I carried it to a store and they looked at it and said it might be the power button without me mentioning it as a possibility, can a stuck power button cause this behavior? some even mentioned taking out the battery and putting it in again. If I open up my nexus would it void my warranty?

Oh Np. You need to contact your local LG service centre to claim warranty
Just an update, carried it to a tech shop and as suspected it was indeed the power button, they replaced it and now it's working. The technician said although the button was clicking it kept contact with the board telling the phone to turn off as soon as it turns on which caused the loop. So if anyone is experiencing similar problems you might wanna have that checked. Thanks for the numerous replies :good:

My nexus 5 went into a bootloop today and after i tried plugging and holding everything for hours i took wjng's advice, held vollume down and power at the same time and slammed it down onto a table and it stayed on the bootloader finally. Time to flash a stock rom and pray i guess.

[Q] Nexus 5 constantly rebooting at 'Google'

Guys my gf's Nexus 5 shutdown today and just refuses to boot up. It doesn't do anything with any of the keys pressed in any of the combinations that are defined. But once it is plugged in to the charger or USB, the google logo pops up and the phone keeps on rebooting to that logo. If the volume down key is pressed when this is happening, the fastboot mode is visible for a second and the phone keeps rebooting. No action can be done in the fastboot mode due to the quick reboot. I am attaching the video of the problem. Any help guys?

If on battery, then the phone does nothing. If plugged in to charger and the key combination is tried then the phone keeps on doing as shown in the video.
Don't know what's going on.
Try doing that but with the phone connected to a PC that has adb and fastboot installed.

You have a fauilty or a stucked power key.
If it is just stucked then you can unstuck it by abusing the power key or taking the phone apart.
If it is fauilty then you have to claim your warranty.
If you disassemble the phone you will void your warranty

A few days back, she had got the power button fixed because the power button response had become intermittent and the phone was rebooting randomly. She had taken the phone to a LG service center first, but they told her that changing the button or trying to fix it might damage the board and told her to change the board altogether. So we took it to a local repair guy who fixed it and the phone was working fine till yesterday when it shutdown all of a sudden and then the rest is history.
Note: The phone is not under warranty as the phone was bought from Dubai and we stay in India. No international warranty.

Yeah the repair guy you dealt with must have fixed the button short-term but in doing so inadvertently caused it to short out. Meaning it needs to go back to a repair shop (better one) and cross your fingers that it didn't short out more important components

Guys please clear my one doubt. If it's the stuck power button, what does it have to do with the phone not doing anything when on battery but decides to go till 'Google' when plugged in?

Had my Nexus 5 for about a few month now, and have loved it till this morning, it decided to just shut off (full battery too) and i tried to turn it on and it is now just constantly starting up to the "Google" splash screen then shutting off.
Sometimes it gets to the the 4 color circles then shuts off.
I want to enter into recovery mode, but I have no time to click recovery mode as it reboots frequently
One thing i noticed when it did boot up was the power button seems to be extremely sensitive and volatile
I had this same problem.. It constantly rebooted and wouldn't let me get into recovery.. Every time I plugged in the charger it would reboot also. You have to let the battery completely drain.. I gave it a couple weeks.. then tried it again and it worked.
Found a solution
Well same thing started to happening with me yesterday after installing android L's developers' preview in my nexus 5. It worked well for first 4-5 hours but then after terminating a phone call when I put it back to my pocket problem started. I searched many forums for solution then I decided to re-install from image. I connected my phone to My PC (Which had driver installed & fastBoot setup) dramatically my phone started working well. And I detached my phone from PC. So I thought it might solved because after supplying charging. But after 3-4 hours it started again so I directly plugged in to electric socket but it kept on rebooting. Then I turned on my PC and attached my nexus 5 with it. Again it started dramatically.
Still I don't know the exact reason behind it. But good new is my phone is still working since last 16 hours... But I took care of not to launch some apps listed risky for developer's preview. So I thing some incompatible app launch may be a reason... but still its only "may be"

If it happens again try what I just answered and let us know if it worked for you? So we can come to know if solution was nexus 5 specific or android L specific. Also mention the OS version, please.

[Q] Nexus 5 constantlly turning on and off

For quite a long time I did not make any change on Nexus ROM or applications, but yesterday my Nexus turns off while I was web browsing. I tried to turn it on but it refuses. It is only possible with USB cable plugged in, but then it constantly turns on for 1 second and then turns off, and this is going in endless loop as soon as USB cable is plugged in. But with unplugged cable NEXUS can not be powered on.
The video can be seen on this link

Yesterday I somehow manage to get in recovery mode and I wipe cache and Nexus boot ROM, but after 30 minutes of usage it again turns of by itself. After that for more than 100 times I tried to get to recovery mode but I could not.
So, I think that my only chance to wipe cache and put new ROM is through ADB. But I do know how to do that. Can anyone help me?
P.S. I both my NEXUS in US, but I live in Croatia (EU) and Google tells that they can not make exchange for other NEXUS (although my phone is under warranty) because they can only do that for postal address inside US. Because I do not live there and any of my friends or relative will travel in US soon my only way to get my NEXUS working is through ADB.
sounds as your power button is "stuck'.
Try the LG RMA. Worked for me here in Belgium

Where did you both your Nexus, and in which country did you send RMA request?

Shake your phone vigorously for a minute, I've been using that as a temp fix for a dodgy power button exactly as you've described

It usually helps the button back out again, I think you should RMA to LG, I'm sure they're worldwide. You could always open up the phone and try unsticking the power button if you can't be bothered sending it back.

Power button is not what cause the problem. I found many reports about the same problem, like on this page
http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/29tr5n/nexus_5_wont_turn_on_google_screen_keeps_flashing/
but nothing which I tried did not helped. But certainly power button is not causing the problem.
When the problem appears for the first time I manage to get into recovery and wipe cache, and after that phone booted ROM. After 30 minutes of working phone turns off and now I'm not able to get even into recovery.

So, since shaking, hard wacks, and anyting physical did not helped after your post I dismantle my phone and without back plate and upper plate on chips my phone works perfectly. So it seems that upper plate which covers chips is the cause of the problem.
For me, not even disassembling has helped, so I bought another motherboard and put it into my phone.

the problem occured and i found what it was my power button it wasnt staying in place like its tilting so now i got to buy a new button for it :/
As far as I remember, the button is soldered to the board, and can not be bought separately. I know the second thing for sure, since I was also only searching for a separate button in the beginning...

Bootlooping contantly - Think i have a bad eMMC

My wife's Nexus 5 seems to have self-destructed...
I will randomly reboot, even in recovery & bootloader. then just cycle for a while, constantly showing the google screen, then black, then google again. Sometimes it'll boot, but then reboot within a few minutes and it all starts again.
The device is just out of warranty.
This started randomly, not after flashing a rom or anything. at first, it seemed like a rom issue, it was only rebooting every few hours, and hadn't in recovery or bootloader. So i rebooted in recovery and reflashed the same rom (Mahdi kitkat final). As soon as it finished flashing, it rebooted on it's own. The issue has gotten much worse now. It won't stay in fastboot for more than 1 second, and it won't boot into recovery (both via holding down buttons).
I think the phone's probably dead, and I've ordered a oneplus one for me (wife will get my hand-me-down nexus 5. Domino effect!). Does anyone have any ideas? or think they can fix it? i'll send it to you.
Thanks for reading!
It's a bad power button. Almost guaranteed. It would not be software if it happens in all modes.
Not too expensive to get fixed really.
Dead eMMC: fastboot oem lock, rebooting then it goes back to being unlocked
Broken power button: reboots without touching power button, even in bootloader
Really?!? WOW!
That kind of makes sense...
is it the physical button you push, or the clicker in the phone?
A quick google search didn't find any replacement power buttons. Any Ideas?
Thanks for the insight!

My nexus 5 had the power button issue which caused it to reboot randomly and also caused wifi to stuck at "turning on wifi". Was going to use my credit card extended warranty to cover the cost since it was out of warranty, but LG fixed it pro bono. called google nexus hotline and they will get LG online for you. Good luck.
I got a bad emmc, is there a script available for the nexus 5 to reparation it. Its already dead so i don't mind testing anything.

Damaged eMMC is a lost cause.

Boot loop after rooting MMB29V. Please help.

I was running the latest stock image (MMB29V) since yesterday on my Nexus 5 and today I used the Nexus root toolkit as always to root the device. Well TWRP flashed once and it said it copied the root files to the device. I had it in my pocket for a few minutes and after that it went into a crazy constant boot loop. It will stop eventually but if I keep the charging cable in it won't stop. I cannot get into recovery because I get the "Start" screen but I cannot advance because it reboots too quickly. I have found a few you tube videos where people push the power button like they are playing the old school game "Track and Field" but this does not work for me nor do I think it's a power button issue. I think I stupidly might have hit some kind of button combo while I'm my pocket believe it or not. I pulled the cover off and was hoping to pull the battery but Im not a fan of doing that since its not a simple task. Any help appreciated. This phone is dead to me and that is NOT good. I need to get this working.
TIA
Bill
Will the phone stay in fastboot mode or does it quickly restart?
Possible power button problem?

It quickly restarts. I want to say its not a problem with the power button because it has been fine for a few years now w/out issue and only happened after rooting earlier today. Right now the only way I can even get the phone to turn on is the plug the charging cable in and then the restarting commences. Does it sound like a power button issue? Possibly but its hard to believe, I dunno. Waiting on a call back from Google tech support to see if they are any help.
It could be a power button issue. You'll have to remove the motherboard to find out.
Once removed from the housing, quickly press and release the power button several times in a row using more pressure than normal. While the motherboard is out of the phone, clean around the power button with pure alcohol.

Is there a write up on that here somewhere? Guess I will have to search around for it.

Did NOT want to screw up my phone so I sent it to LG. Took a few weeks but it cost me 78.00 total for them to repair the power button issue. Whatever they replaced also fixed the low volume issue I was experiencing as well so it worked out.
