[Q] Virgin Mobile SM-G900P - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good Evening,
I've got the Virgin Mobile Variant of the S5, which has the exact same model # as the Sprint and Boost (SM-G900P)
I see a lot of stuff on the development pages regarding this model, but I'm guessing it's mainly the Sprint variant. My question is, what do I need to be careful of when it comes to flashing roms/mods/etc based on the SM-G900P. I'm assuming the main difference is the APN's? I'm particularly interested in NE5, as I'm currently on ND2.
I appreciate any knowledge you can share, as I don't see a VM specific forum anywhere.

NE5 TO BOOST VARIANT i received the update yesterday

With the S5, you can flash any Sprint, Boost, VM SM-G900P rom to your phone. NE5 is also the latest Sprint build, and is fine to flash to your phone.

Does this apply to TAR's as well as the zips? Forgive my ignorance, I'm just trying to save a headache. I'm stuck on the VM GS3 mindset of a build needing to be catered to my device (and/or use APN fix). If that's not the case at all, that's useful to know.

If you're on MDL and want MF3, I recommend rooting and installing a custom recovery while you can, and then flashing the neutered MF3 update. Root is in the General section, many MF3 ROM's can be found in Development sections. Make sure to read the whole OP in whichever you go to before doing anything.

I am in need of the stock mf3 firmware. tried getting rid of bloat ware and now getting error messages all over and cant recover
OK...after downloading and extracting...this is only the kernel source...
help
i did just that....but know i get samsung text to speech has stopped as well as music has stopped...factory wipe and clean did nothing as well as restoring terminator back up of all things i uninstalled...nothing help so i figured fresh install of mf3 firmware would do the trick but i guess no one has that yet

I just really want the update so I can open the extra LTE bands. Also the Apps to SD would be nice. The Rooted roms dont fix the LTE bands. Also i dont care about rooting. Looks like CM is going to be coming out with a non root flash method for thier roms anyway.
You can unlock them... You don't need the update. Google.

Yes, you may be able to just flash the MF3 modem after a factory reset. That would hopefully resolve your current issues and open up the LTE bands.

The extra bands are unlocked through the service menus. Not through a modem. If that were the case, the update would unlock your device for any GSM carrier. AT&T is not going to do that.

Yeah AT&T opened up access to lte band 2 and 5 with the mf3 on their modem. Probably for international oversea purposes/partnership?

If you want the MF3 rom and/or kernel, check out this thread. If you want just the modem (baseband), check out the latest addition, File #11 in that same thread.
Otherwise, I think this thread has been hijacked enough, and the original purpose has been served, in my opinion. The MF3 source is practically useless to anyone except Devs that want to build their own kernels.

Could the kernel source also be useful to those looking to find an exploit in MF3 (to unlock the bootloader or something to that effect), or is the kernel too high-level for that sort of thing?

Pretty sure it's too high level. It might be useful for finding a root exploit, but that's been done already for MF3. It wouldn't be useful for finding a way to unlock the bootloaders, but the only slim help it could find in this area is perhaps providing clues to understanding "aboot" more, and how it checks for signatures on, and loads the kernel. But even still, that's a longshot. TBH, anyone who might be looking for exploits here should already be aware of the source code's existence, plus this sort of exploit would brobably be little different between MF3 and MDL.
EDIT:
Also, welcome to XDA!
Excuse the possibly noobish question here, but what does this mean for the new root status? My phone came with MF3 and I really would like to get some custom ROMs on here. :?

Verizon [ST S3](SCH-S968C)Unlocked Bootloader?

Hey! So I have a Verizon Version of the Straight Talk S3. (SCH-S968C). It is identical to the Verzion version, just no LTE or Wifi Thether capabilities. It also has no sim, etc. I was wanting to test a few roms on it, and I was wondering, how to unlock the bottloader on it without bricking the phone? Any help? Thanks. :silly:
im wondering the same thing.
im in the same boat and have the same model s968c on straight talk. ive got it rooted and want to install roms but im concerned about the bootloader being locked and bricking my phone. but i made it this far so im doing pretty good lol considering ive never messed with rooting or such lol. if someone could enlighten us that would be awesome. ive been researching and reading for about two days so i could learn as much as possible about this phone model and i know straight talk is no fun trying to mess with.

From what I've been reading it seems to be that this is pretty legit, I tried it myself. Although if your on 4.3 ML1 or 4.4.2 NE1 your locked down
If you power off the device, then power it back on, you should see the words "Samsung" first. If they stay on the screen for more than 2 seconds, then it's locked down. If it flashes by almost instantly, then you're unlocked

I not positive about it being locked down with the sch-968c) because that's a verizon boot loader issue and this is a straight talk phone. I've been researching as well and from what I've learned, it can be rooted very quickly using cydia impactor and then flashing cwm recovery for roms and such. The apn settings may need some tweaking. I'm planning to do this to my friends phone this weekend and putting liquid smooth rom on it.

As far as I know any d2lte ROM will work. So far I've tried CM, PA and Pac-Man. All installed fine but they all suffer from the no APN issue which can be bypassed by using 8sms from the play store and changing the APN settings by adding Http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms. Handcent should also work.

I suggest using towelroot. Its much faster and does not require a pc to root your phone.
Yes towel root works great actually the best out of the non pc methods for this device (out of my experience anyway) the phone runs on 4.1.2 and I have no access to a pc so I'm guessing that there's not a very safe or efficient way to install custom roms...

What is the unlocked G920T?

Best Buy sells an unlocked version of the G920T - http://goo.gl/bk4ukE
It's not T-Mobile. It's unlocked and has no carrier bloat - just the usual Samsung stuff. It shows "4G" for LTE. (Edit: Correction - after the OTA referenced below, it shows H+ and LTE)
It came with 5.1.1 out of the box, build ending in COG3.
It had a 272mb software update immediately available that took it up to the build ending in COK1 and added the Android Security Patch Level line showing 2015-11-01.
Just curious how this model fits into the other unlocked models (f, i, etc.). Did Samsung simply take the T-Mobile model and sell a variant unlocked with no T-Mobile influence?
Sorry to bump this but I'm seeing a few more of these in the wild now and trying to figure it out. It's gotta have the same internals as the T-Mobile variant since the model number is the same, I'm assuming anyway? The full model is SM-G920TZKAX, but the packaging and phone just shorten it to T. The T-Mobile model is SM-G920TZDATMB. I guess knowing what the letters after G920T mean would be helpful.
From what I've read it appears to be a unlocked version of the T-Mobile variant. Can't find much information about it.
I purchased the unlocked version from Best Buy yesterday for $450. Rooted it and could not be happier.

What method did you use? I'm concerned about doing any mods due to not having the right software to flash back to (which we don't have right?).
I used the follow root method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/galaxy-s6-root-5-1-1-variants-t3147074
As for going back to stock, you can always use smart switch, or ODIN back to stock rom.

I just bought this yesterday as an open box for $380. I was worried that is wouldn't have LTE band 17 for AT&T as the normal 920T is listed as missing this band. The Best Buy version does have band 17 and I'm connected on it now. Very happy with the phone so far.

you can also see the specs for the phone on Samsung's website. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SM-G920TZKAXAR
4G FDD LTE: B1(2100), B2(1900),B3(1800),B4 (AWS),B5(850),B7(2600),B12(700),B17(700),B20(800)
Firmware?
Love the phone with no carrier bloatware, would have preferred 64GB but I can make due. I would like to root it but not without having factory firmware to fall back on. Even though it's a 920T it's has no T-Mobile apps so I'm pretty sure I can't load a T-Mobile ROM on it. If anyone runs across formware for a SM-G920TZKAXAR PLEASE let us know. TIA
Does this work with Samsung Pay?
Has anyone tried getting this to work with Samsung Pay? I saw on a Slickdeals thread that it will not work ... would love confirmation.
Also, and I know this is a very, very slight chance anyone will know this, but -- will this work with my old, granfathered T-Zones data plan?

Canadian Firmware Flash?

I have an international unlocked version of the S7 and was wondering if I could flash the 930W8 Canadian firmware to this phone?
Unless there's a better answer out there...
As long as you're running the same Exynos processor, it's usually safe to cross-flash variants' /system (AP/PDA) partitions. You will definitely want to avoid flashing the CSC, and unless you're trying to access the Canadian carriers' frequencies avoid flashing the modem (CP) as well.
Make certain that you've got the correct firmware handy just in case of a brick.
I've used G900F roms for years on my old G900W8 (S5, not S7). Just don't cross-pollinate the stuff that touches hardware (i.e. modem).

The reason why is because I had previously gotten an AMERICAN SIM ONLY S7 from Amazon and I don't know what firmware it had on it. I was thinking it might have been 930W8 firmware. I started another thread about it, but short answer is that the AMERICAN SIM ONLY S7 ran a lot smoother than the one I have now. I have the international unlocked 930F now.

The US version uses SD820 whereas Canada uses the Exynos. You will likely soft-brick or even hard brick your device AFAIK.
By the way, the BEST way to get stock firmware pretty much directly from Samsung is using a tool called SamFirm. Google "samfirm xda" and it should be the first link.

g930w8 - mistakenly given?

I am with Rogers in Canada and was upgrading my plan that included a good deal on a s7 if I wanted it - they dropped the phone off at my office but I believe it's the Bell version - is that correct SM-G930W8? I've not opened the box as I plan to sell it - should I ask for the Rogers version, is it better for some reason? Thanks
Sorry, I'm a Nexus guy, don't know the Samsung phones really at all
w8 is the canadian version, when you pop in a carriers sim it'll download their appropriate bloatware.
SM-G930W8 - Canadian Note 7 (all carriers have the same phone).

Kinda, but im sure if you flash a w8 kernel the rom will work since all the roms are made for exynos. Your other option is the 930f which is the international version, but that's no reason to get rid of the w8.
