If say, I were to create a superb Google voice messaging app, who all would use it?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Depending on the features, I would. I completely agree that the Google Voice app is lacking many features.
I'll keep track of this thread and if you need beta testers, I'm in.

I need something that can send SMS over WiFi like the T-Mobile WiFi calling app.
Is be happy to beta test as well. I use Google voice as my transcribed voicemail

So, specifically, what features would you guys like to have in this app?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I've been looking for a new gv app for years. I keep hoping hangouts will merge soon. But the things I would like out of gv messaging app are common in other messaging apps like threaded messages. Not split up like gv does. Custom sounds per contact. A pop up quick reply message. Those are the things I would want most.
Batch delete. Is really the only thing I really want from GV. Anything else is just a plus to me. I live in an area where T-Mobile gets real shotty reception and I have hundred and hundreds of items in 'Missed' in GV. Trying to delete them is just absurd.
Alright! Let's see what I can do for my first app!

Good luck! I look forward to trying it.

are you talking about youmail, or visual voicemail plus?
arent those kind of the same thing as google voice?
I like google voice, you can check you voicemail online, it transcribes(usually poorly, but but better than spring vvm, when i had my epic.)
Google Voice.

you make a lot of threads >_>
yep google voice. sux that any visual voice mail on att not on the iphone is considered a forwarded call and thus uses your minutes but atleast it's not a surcharge like on sprint to use call forward or use sprints transcription service. i used youmail a while back because for some reason on a stock captivate rom that phone wouldn't set call forwarding up to the google voice number for the life of me. if would just fail for no reason. yet it worked for the youmail number. on an i9000 rom my captivate set up google voice just fine. go figure. what i will say is that toe youmail transcription service works better but it is not free, they may still have a free trial for it though.

there is no other platform that has the 3rd party app support and dev comunity. the iphone ui sux. they are constantly doing hacks to get andriod features but they are never as good. meego looks good but few phones have compatable bootloaders.
I can't forward my voicemail at&t number to GV voicemail. On GV app setup when I click configure voicemail and choose GV, it just bring me back to configure voicemail,
I remember when I had my iPhone 4 and some called be on my att number and was sent to the voice mail, the voicemail was forward to GV voicemail.

I had trouble too. Just came from iphone also. You need to log in on your PC not the Google voice app and set it up there Google.com/voice . You should be able to find where it says activate voicemail. Click it and it will give you a long number to call mine started with a *. Enter that # as if you where making a call and press send it will activate your account. I tried and tried to get it working from my phone but ended up going it this way. Good luck

Just got my N5, and aside from unlocking and whatnot that I'm doing right now, I quickly noticed no SMS app like in 4.2/4.3
Is hangouts now the substitute? If that's the case, then that blows. Ideally I wanted to use titanium to restore all of my SMS messages from my galaxy nexus.
Damn....
Hangouts is the substitute, however, check the themes and apps section, someone posted a functional AOSP messaging app. I don't know if I recommend restoring from your GN though, but that's entirely up to you.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah, everything is getting integrated with Hangouts. It blows losing the old messages (I had some saved for years on there), but Hangouts is actually pretty nice.
Ya, I'm sure its killer and I don't mind change, but my wife is a little different. I don't think she'll like losing all of those txt/mms messages. I bought two nexus 5's and although I'll be ok with losing my sms's, I can't see her feeling the same opinion. lol
just install hangouts on your gnex. it'll pick up all of your sms's. then backup hangouts and restore it on your n5. I did that exact process on my n4
Sent from my Nexus 5
I used Ritesh Sahu's SMS Backup Restore app today from Gnex stock messaging to Hangouts on N5. Worked great, just had to follow the messages about setting the default app.

I guess nothing. So long as I can extract the mms's which I know there are apps out there I guess that's all that matters. Maybe I'll just tell her to suck it up so I can save myself some work eh.
I find hangouts kinda annoying for my text stuff are you using it?
I pulled the messaging apk from CM if anyone wants it, it has quick reply and all those features... MMS.apk

yeah i ditched it. i mean i tried to use it. i really did, but it needs some work... ok it needs a ton of work and maybe another overhaul.
im using 8sms works nicely
I ditched it right away. Using the AOSP MMS.apk instead.
I'm using it, but mostly because I use hangouts messages over sms most of the time. Plus in getting use to it for once they incorporate Google voice since I have been using that for a few years already.

In using it.. Seems fine to me

A little laggy when opening but it's fine. I like it.
Duh lol
ya
gosms for me always
I'm considering using AOSP MMS application. I do not use hangouts for anything. Although I have no issues replying to SMS, I find composing a new SMS cumbersome
Hangouts sucks to me... Not sure why they removed the stock messaging app and also why they removed the stock browser as well. I've been using Textra for SMS. It's lightweight with a bit more customization options than 8sms or the CM app.
I tried using Hangouts texting for about a week and then switched to ChompSMS which I had been using prior to getting the Nexus 5. The one thing I missed when I ditched my iPhone and got a Galaxy Nexus a few years ago was the jailbreak texting app called BiteSMS. ChompSMS is basically BiteSMS for Android, created by the same developer. Have tried other texting apps but have not found anything that is better for me.
Ditched it. I don't like having SMS and Chat in the same screen. I think that hangouts needs to implement tabs. Hangouts | SMS at the top... this would make managing SMS a bit easier. I went back to Handcent SMS.
ditched it from day one as well haha. using textra
I'm having no issues with hangouts, but then again, before hangouts, I only used the stock messaging app.

Is it possible to get google voice working with any other services besides the ones they have listed? I want to set it up with my lycamobile number. So is there a way to do this or is it not allowed unless they officially support it? I Google searched and all I could find was how to transfer your Google voice number but nothing about getting it working with other companies. Thanks

When I tried setting up google voice and texting and calling on my computer it said choose your carrier from a drop down list. The list only had certain big ones. Lycamobile wasn't on there but it supposedly runs on tmobiles network so do I just choose tmobil?

I never had to select a carrier but I set mine up a few years ago. Maybe things have changed. If your provider runs on T-Mobile network I would choose it

It didn't work. It says mmi something then error or something like that when I put in the activation code. It says prepaid T-Mobile plans not supported and my plan is prepaid so that might be the issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I don't understand what activation you are having to do. When I set mine up, I simply put in the number I wanted to verify from, what number would be used to forward to and that was it

They must've changed it then. Or maybe it detected yours was already supported. I wanted to set up the voice mail feature but it said. Your carrier may not be supported. Set up from PC or something along those lines and have me a link.

Se situation
Abdel, I appear to be in the same situation as you. I am able to receive calls/texts using my Google Voice number, but I wasn't able to make calls using the number because Lycamobile isn't on the drop-down list on Google's "activate Google Voice on this phone" page. BUT then I just changed the setting in GV to "Making calls: Use Google Voice to make all calls" and it works perfectly, showing my GV number on phones I call and ringing my phone when people call my GV number. It even seems voicemails are handled by GV and not Lyca.

Awesome thanks. I'll try that. So after setting it to make all calls you don't need to do anything from the computer? And does it let you text people with it too?

Correct, nothing else onthe computer. I'm using the GV app for all my text messages, not the normal Android texting app (soon to become Hangouts, methinks).
If this is working for you, hit the thanks button. I don't know much compared to some people here, so I'll take any boost to my thanks meter I can get.

I don't see the option for make all calls with Google voice. There's two about international calls and then one saying don't make any calls with Google voice. The international one says ask to make international cars and the other says make international call with g voice

So I was able to get Google voice working by using groove IP lite. It uses my Google voice number. It doesn't even need the voice app installed. In just going to have that set as a sort of personal home phone. What sucks Is in may apparently Google won't allow those apps anymorw

Do you use google voice? It's better with emojis than it used to be, but still not the best, could be the cause of your problem, I know it is mine.
yeah i do use google voice. I've tried sending SMS over 3G and 4G using google voice and my carrier in the hangouts app with no luck. I think it must have something to do with antenna in our phone or something because it sends fine over wifi
I know it's a pain, but try disabling voice, or just have the voicemail part used. Not through the app, but on your computer, like completely disable voice and try that way. From what I know, it can't handle the emojis and they generally get turned into an mms in order to send. try it out and see if that's really your problem or not.
Ahhhhh thank you so much I can finally send them. Sprint integration with google voice was the problem. Once disabled it worked fine
Sent from my SM-G900P using XDA Free mobile app
Sweet, that was my issue too, too bad it had to come down to using emojis, or texting over wifi and from computers and stuff. It's a tough one for me.
