Emergency Alerts apk? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Is there a stock, HTC Emergency Alerts app? Can anyone provide an apk, as Verizon has stiffed me on this one. I get amber alerts but other than a subject line, cannot review them. Can the volume be managed say on a time schedule? Please don't debate me on the necessity of this. I will find a way to turn them off if I can't manage it. I am rooted.
If I do a Google image search for "htc one m8 emergency alerts app" I can see an Emergency Alerts app with orange triangle with ! icon. My Verizon M8 doesn't have this, and yet Verizon's site says to manage Emergency Alerts, go to apps.. Emergency Alerts.... When amber alerts come in, besides scarying me out of my chair, waking my precious baby, or just confusing me in my sleep, I have no idea what happened, after I manage to make it stop. I cannot review them after I've collected my thoughts. I have seen the most recent one in the recent apps list under Messages, yet there is no setting under the messaging app to affect or review them.

Can anyone with a Verizon M8 confirm they are missing the app as well? I don't understand why Verizon's site explains how to configure the app for the M8, yet the app is missing on my phone, at least. Perhaps I should have asked for the apk in the general M8 forum?

Mine is working by default. Have received amber alert, tornado warning, and flash flood warning with no configuration on my part. Stock rooted Verizon M8.
Wife's is working too, full stock, no root.

Mine works, too, but I can't configure it without the app. Do you have the "Emergency Alerts" app with Orange triangle icon? Verizon says it's there.
I'm hoping to be able to choose/disable alerts.
When alerts come in on my phone, I see them in a "Messages" window, but I cannot view the alert (2 amber alerts so far)

Checking now, will report back.

I don't have that, but as far as I know the settings for the Emergency Alerts should be under the Messages app settings (text message default app). I do not have the option now, but I think I did previously. Will keep looking into it.

I don't have any options in the messages app either. I found mention of this for other phones, but don't think that applies to the M8.

Sprint lists that as the way for its M8. T-Mobile lists the same as Verizon, going into Emergency Alerts app. I can't find any other info and haven't found anything in the phone yet.

I have it. Although I am using the messages apk from the international variant. I'm most certain that it is part of the messages apk.

So you have a shortcut for event alerts in app drawer, but it is a subsection of the messages app's settings when opened?

I knew the alerts were being displayed in the messages app, at least once viewing the alert. So we're talking a difference in messages apk between carrier phones? This is what gives you the settings... Where'd the app drawer entry come from? Is there an additional system app?
I saw CDMA somewhere in your output. Does that suggest something is incompatible with the Verizon phones or maybe just it is on such hardware? I don't expect answers to all Qs, just getting frustrated at all if the features Verizon removes from our phones.

Yes there is a difference in the mms app between carriers. Vzw has ripped out a ton of features verses the international one. In fact I have a thread showing all the features removed. And how to get all of them back.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729137
The app drawer icon is from the mms apk I'm using from the international variant. It has that and serveal other things and that's why i am using it.
It refers to cmda because that is the type of phone therefore the type of messages received. All emergency messages are both cmda and gsm. So they are able to be received on any type of phone/carrier.
Note: using the mms apk I currently have you do lose the vvm integration however I don't use it there for I don't care

Aw man, why are you so special? Did it come with the phone? Did you get your phone early on or more recently? I got my phone in the first few days of release and am running stock, rooted rom.

Sorry djakrse, I too have it on my (mostly) stock rooted unlocked VZW M8. I got mine within a couple of weeks of release. The only mod I've made was disabling a few things through TiBu, which then makes them invisible in the app drawer. You haven't done that to this by accident, have you?
(got a tornado warning this past weekend that was especially scary considering the weather outside at the time)

I got mine April 26 from a Verizon store. Haven't disabled anything, rooted, and installed extreme power save mod. Not listed anywhere for me but I receive the alerts.

Lol you guys are killing me. That's a great suggestion to check. I'd considered doing that initially, until I heard it prevented OTA updates from installing.
I'm starting to wonder if the fact i use a 3rd party SMS app has anything to do with it. Any of you guys with the Emergency Alerts icon also using something other than the stock messenger app?

I got two of these on the BOGO back in May for mothers day... My mom's is bone stock and has it I checked last night when I visited for dinner... I'm on stock Rom rooted with tibu, xposed, and checkm8 kernel but we've both had it since day one... I've tried changing to third party messaging apps a few times and always still had emergency alerts but I am using the stock messaging app again
Edit: just checked the receipt April 25th I bought the two phones...

Did I screw up my SMS timestamp settings?

I don't know if this just a problem with my phone, but I can't see what time a text was sent if it wasn't sent today. After I select a message marked yesterday or some other past date, I click on "View message details," and I just see the date it was sent or "yesterday."
I checked a friend's Samsung Moment, and it displayed the time the message was sent, no matter when it was sent! Did I do something to screw up my phone? I am not technically proficient, just followed these guides to root and flash a ROM on my phone. I have Fresh ROM 1.1 (you got skills flipzmode) running with MoDaCo's Custom Kernel 1.2 (modaco, you're sick, too), and a clear theme on top of it all.

Are you in Arizona? I believe if you search the forum or even google you will see people in that time zone complaining times are not correct.
No, I'm on the East Coast.
The problem isn't with traveling and receiving messages at different times, but just reading what time I received or sent a message. If a message was received sent any other day than today, I'm not able to see what time the person sent it or when I sent one.
When I was using handcent this wasn't a problem, just now with the stock messaging app. Could someone else confirm that this is a problem with my phone? Just open your stock messaging app, select a conversation that took place on a day other than today, and see if you can find out what time the message was sent or received.
It's a shortcoming of the HTC messaging app. Check the same message in Handcent and you'll see the timestamp when picking "View message details".
That's sad stuff. Thanks for the reply. I'll donate to whoever fixes it!
Edited to add: Is there a way to port over another messaging app? Maybe the one from the Moment?

Best integrated feature and don't see why they would take it away but still integrate blocked calling feature? Stupid. Know any third party apps that work with KitKat 4.4.2 for this?
So did Verizon take this feature out or maybe in the software update that brings us the Power Save modes we will get this feature back?
On the HTC site it shows it's still possible on the M8, http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/howto/464987.html

Not a solution, but a workaround would be to install Who Are You from the Play Store. You can block calls and texts using it.

Made a thread on the Intl M8 forum trying to get someone over there to check. Will at least confirm if HTC said screw it you don't need this feature or Verizon/US Carriers (once other carriers get this device in hand to see) said screw it you don't need this feature. HTC says the M8 has this feature. Unless they are wrong or again only on the Intl version or maybe just latest Firmware since ours is so old and don't even have the simple Power Save mode yet. Geez my Sense 4+ had Power Save mode. http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/howto/464986.html

Exactly! Always had this feature even on Sense 5.5 with Android 4.2.2 on my HTC One X+ device. Seems odd Sense 6.0 would take the feature out and leave in the block call feature???
Third party apps never work as well as fully integrated features IMO. Sure they can work for the most part, only takes that one time though it doesn't work to ruin it all, lol!

Long press a message you only get options for Delete, Call, Open Contact. That's it! If you go into a text conversation window you can lock a message by tapping it and shows a lock symbol. Doesn't hide the message at all, think all this does is prevent message from being deleted.
Well looks like there is hope people!!! Straight from the HTC website it provides it (see link above) and also just got confirmation from an international unbranded HTC M8 user!
1.54.401.5 and yeah, stock unbranded international.
So i guess we then have to wait for either:
A. Verizon push us an OTA update with latest firmware 1.54.401.5
B. We have to wait for S-Off and then we can update on our own to firmware 1.54.401.5 and have it along with a world of opportunities?!?:fingers-crossed:
Just tested out the block caller feature that we still do have built into the stock dialer app. This feature is useless, try it! I blocked a phone number. Then had that phone call my phone, after 2 rings goes to voicemail, i left a voicemail. Now my phone vibrates telling me i have a new voicemail and also displays an icon on the notification bar with a person and a lock next to them. I pull down notifications and says tap to stop call forwarding or slide to dismiss.
So basically if you want someone to not call you you're SOL! They can still leave you a voicemail and the phone shows you right away that someone you didn't want to call just called. Gotta love the privacy here, WTF?!?
Really miss iPhone here with iBlacklist. The only app that got it right all the time! Would not let people leave a VM, would just make a busy tone if they called. Above that would save their texts they tried sending you inside the iBlacklist app itself if you cared to read them or just delete them. This device has no options like this and seems nothing on the market is compatible with kit kat 4.4.2?

Does it block text too? Seems nothing blocks text in kit Kat 4.4.2 and HTC phones have issues not blocking calls instead sending them to VM.

Text message "invalid recipient" fix

I have been seeing a lot of people on various forums complain about when they try and send a text they get an invalid recipient message. You must be rooted to fix this. In Root Explorer go into the CUST folder. Inside will be a cmcc, dualcu, and hw folder. (Lost+Found & Preinstalled you don't have to worry about) Go into cmcc--->cn--->xml and delete the mms_config.xml file. Do the same for the dualcu and hw folders. Then restart your phone. You will not get the invalid recipient message any more.

Yes, it's not too big of a deal though as you can use another SMS app.
So I could get any SMS App from the Google Play Store? Another question... where's the best place to buy an X2 for use in the USA? I have read that if it says Honor on it then it's a Chinese version but that there is another version of the X2 for international and that is a "better" one for the USA. I don't know how to quote your previous post (I am kindof a Forum newbie). I got an email telling me that I had been quoted so I knew to come here. I wish I could figure out how to quote so you would get an email that I am back! Lol!

I don't think it matters which model you buy. You will not have LTE here in the U. S. The Chinese version has been out longer so it will probably have more development here on XDA. You can buy it on Gizok.com, on ebay or Amazon.

It has to do with the way the phone numbers are formatted here in the US. Huawei has something in the MMS_config file so that any other number format other than an international one won't send texts unless they send you a text first. Removing those files removes the format and lets you text any number without an issue.

Then just using another SMS app is not really a "fix"? The only way to really fix it is to do that complicated thing that was brought up earlier in this thread? Text "invalid recipient" work around
You wont need to be Rooted to use stock messaging app and yes invalid recipient is an issue to some. Its only a formatting issue just as if you had a device from your local area and used it in a foreign country you would need to correct dialing codes. The easiest fix is to save all contacts in International format exactly as shown +1(area code) ###-#### or just download a app called Twitch contact formatter from the P.S. Run the app it will find all numbers then select output to international format and done.
1. I recommend you access and export a backup of your original contacts from PC.
2. Then run downloaded app and sync contacts to your g account once again.
If contacts do not update in cloud delete address book in cloud and re-sync from phone.*****BACK UP FIRST*****

Even though I am in a TMobile "black hole" - always on E (Edge) with no phone network available for Internet and phone calls are even in-and-out... My texting on the TMobile messaging app and on home WiFi works just fine... I questioned TMobile and they said it was probably the interaction between Textra and TMobile... Now I am sure that it has to do with the terrible TMobile service here, instead... I am giving TMobile until December 1 to fix this situation. The local TMobile store (less than 2 miles from my house and right in the middle of this dead zone) told me that they're in the process of putting the nTelos towers they bought online with the existing towers and they said service would be a whole lot better. Otherwise, I am off to AT&T, I guess...

You should be able to walk into a TMobile store and ask them to give you a signal booster. Do you get good coverage outside your house or is the coverage bad in your entire neighborhood? If the whole area is bad then the booster will do you no good though. Downstairs in my house the signal is not so great so they gave me a signal booster. I put one of them upstairs near a window and the second one downstairs and I get a great signal downstairs now.

I tested it and the signal is 4G LTE at about 2 miles away on one road entrance to downtown. All of downtown is E - including the TMobile office! Then it is hard to say... Rural areas that I rarely go into are on other sides so I haven't gone many miles into them to test it out... The northern part of our city is about 20 miles away. I go there and service is great. There are rural areas between us and the northern, developed part. I would say west of us (pretty rural) is bad almost starting at the sign which says "Welcome to Suffolk" about 30 miles away... In land area we are a big city. Old timey divided into little old towns. I am in the old downtown. I looked at the TMobile website and read about the signal booster and was excited until I read further and realized that it would not help... I had excellent service on Verizon... But CDMA was no longer an option when I decided to try the X2! I had no idea TMobile was so bad in my area. Especially since they opened a store less than 2 miles away! Lol!

I have downloaded Twitch and read everything that I can about it on Google. I am not sure how to do backups. I go to Contacts and in the Menu there's an option to Export to sdcard. Is that what you mean? I have never backed up to pc and don't know how... Am I doing a backup just in case Twitch screws something up? To be honest, I am a bit OCD and the uniformity of how Twitch re-formats my phone numbers is very appealing to me. I wouldn't mind having my numbers formatted that way permanently. Would I still have to do a backup in that case? Does having the phone numbers formatted this way allow you to use the stock text messaging app (I'm assuming it is because it's already on my X2) instead of Textra? I LOVE Textra but for the time I am still on TMobile I cannot use it because of the terrible TMobile service in my area... Thanks for your time!

Hello,
You can try using the stock app but if your always on EDGE your phone will not preform as intended when EDGE was industry standard anything over 4 MEGA Pixel photos wasnt even a thought. At minimum you need to be on 3G or HSPA+ which is what Tmobile uses. Check your APN settings Google this ---> apn-settings.com/t-mobile-apn-settings-step-by-step-configuration/
Not sure if the new Tmobile 4G extender will work since the radio in the Mediapad X2 does not even support US 4g networks. At this point I suggest trying stock app if that doesn't work its time to switch carriers. I had to switch and never looked back I live in the city and in my dead zone only ATT worked for me. If you don't want to go threw the activation process just find a friend with ATT and invite them to your house check if they have good signal.
When you backup your original contacts I do mean EXPORT as shown here Google this ---> support.google.com/mail/answer/24911?hl=en
Twitch hasn't erased any of my contacts I only recommend export/backup as a standard with any personal info... Being victim of three hard drive failure in my PC and did I mention they where all in a row. Twitch does have the ability to return your contacts to original format.
As for you formatting they will always need to be set as International prefix in order to use stock messaging app. It works very good for me.
I am not sure about your last question about the SD looking icon? When you launch the app on the top right it should recognize your county format with a flag and to the right of that you have another drop down option select International prefix. At the bottom right of your screen select save and you should be done.

The sdcard icon is next to Save Selected. I just noticed that all of my contacts have a checkmark to the left. I am thinking they are all selected so that is what I will choose. Thanks for all that explanation about Edge. I am giving them until December 1 to upgrade these towers they said they bought... Then I am off to Cricket or AT&T... Thanks also for the Google link to help with the Contacts backup! That should work! I just want to thank everyone for the extra mile they go to with explanations for the clueless (me) lol!

Galaxy s7 930F - Received group messages are split into individual threads

I have the Galaxy S7, 930F international version (Brand new). All works well, except the Messages app splits received group messages into individual threads. I have tried other texting apps and, for one reason or another, concluded that (for me) the stock Messages app would be best for me, if only this one flaw was corrected. Read a lot of threads similar to this but many seemed to address it for USA version. I'd like to maybe update the app, but can't seem to find a way to manually update this particular app (I can manually update nearly all of my stock apps, but this one is not allowed). Anyone have (what seems like) an easy fix. Again, my phone is the 930F international. Country info on the phone references United Arab Emeriates, if that helps. Otherwise, the phone is great!
Have you tried textra?

Try update last release samsung :good:
Thank you. Yes, that's what I've been using, in lieu of the stock app. In fact, I have tried a multitude of replacement apps (you name it, I've tried it). But for one reason or another, they all fall short in something. Textra is not very good on voice-to-text and if I have to send a text while driving, or a long text while golfing, it's something I can't easily do with Textra. But the stock app is excellent on voice-to-text. Also, the stock app uses fewer clicks to locate and attach pics & video. In fact, for my liking, the only thing the stock app misses on is the threading for received group messages. But that's a biggie. Nothing worse than watching a football or basketball game remotely and texting a group of friends, and while you can send out your text in a group text, everyone's replies keeps showing up in a separate individual threads. Their replies (intended for the group) are then mixed in with private text conversations you've previously had with that same person. Ughhh!

Not sure what you mean. By "last release of Samsung" do u mean the latest version of the stock app? I tried to update it and the phone would not recognize that app as being able to manually update. If you mean update to marshmallow, I already have version version 6.0.1

Thank you very much. Does this require me to have a rooted phone? Also, will I lose my data and phone setup when flashing this?

Go into messaging app, hit more (top right corner) then settings, then more settings, them multimedia messages and make sure group conversation is ticked on and I also have auto retrieved ticked on, all other features are turned off. That's what fixed it for me, mine was the same way as yours before I changed those settings, it was very annoying! All is well now!

RCS (messaging) on V20?

I'm seeing more and more about the RCS messaging (currently through Android Messages).
Right now it seems to only be available to Pixel owners.
I know that there are mods and magisk mods (google framework) that allow us to use other Google apps on the V20.
Anyone know of a way to use RCS messaging on the V20?

From what I've read RCS needs to be supported by your carrier. Model doesn't matter. You download Google messages and if it detects that your carrier has it implemented it then it will automatically show up in the settings for messages

Sounds great! Can't wait 'til Verizon adopts it.

Several things...and I'll probably miss some, so feel free to google search RCS.
Two major ones are:
1. It's more secure than SMS.
2. You can include more characters, attachments, etc., than SMS.
A minor reason is:
1. You see if the other person is still typing.
A personal reason is:
I have true unlimited data through an old grandfathered Verizon plan but limited SMS, so this allows me to use less SMS since RCS counts only toward Data.
So I enabled mine and got it working on my H918 on T-Mobile. However I'm unable to send any file that's bigger than 10MB (which was the stock max limit on T-Mobiles advanced messaging using the stock LG app. Anyone else have this issue? Everything else works (read receipts, typing indicator, and pictures I send under 10MB that send properly will show being sent through rich communication service).
[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[UPDATE]]]]]]]]]]]]]]
So apparently the only videos that won't send are ones that I've recorded with Hi-Fi audio enabled in the stock LG camera. Can any one else try this one verify. Not sure why that would matter unless it's more than just size restriction for the limit.
The work around to have it working on my phone stopped working...
Does anyone have RCS messaging through Android Messages working on their V20?
If so, how?
Thanks!

On rr7, los 17.1 and los 18 it's working. But make sure your service provider supports it.
