[Q] The GPS is driving me nuts... - T-Mobile LG G2x

To begin with, I got my phone rooted with CM10 on it - I don't remember how well (or if at all) the GPS worked under that one, because I found it laggy as all crap. I went back to Gingerbread and have LOVED the increased responsiveness, but the GPS is now flaky as all-git-out.
Here is what I have tried:
Old baseband plus...
Eagle's Blood
CM7 7.2 "Stable"
CM7 7.2 Latest nightly (2013 march something, iirc)
I dropped it back to stock and let it update to the new baseband, then...
CM7.2 Latest nightly (ye gods that sounded awful. Oh, and the GPS didn't work.)
HellFire Phoenix reborn/reloaded/whatever the latest one was - I followed all of the "THIS ONE IS DEPRECATED, FOLLOW THIS LINK INSTEAD" links.
I have used the following kernels, more or less randomly, in addition to the ones that came wrapped into each ROM...
MazKrnl v1.0 rc2
Trinity T15
Trinity ELP
MazKrnl and ELP gave me sleeps of death in addition to the GPS not working.
Now, my first GPS lock after loading HFP (my latest ROM - and I am just trying T15 with it as I type this) took about five seconds and held solid. I was SO FREAKING HAPPY! But that was yesterday.
This morning, according to "GPS Toolbox" it can see anywhere from 9-11 satellites - and has a lock on all of them - but won't give me coordinates at all. This is true even after about 30 minutes sitting by a 7th-floor window.
IT'S MADDENING.
I've been googling. I tried messing with the GPS.CONF file, adding and replacing north-america ntp servers. I've tried downloading and re-downloading AGPS info from the GPS toolbox app. I flashed the "for_old_bb.zip" that I found somewhere - even though that's supposed to only affect audio - and GOOD LORD THAT WAS A MISTAKE, given that I'm now on the new bb. (The "new_baseband.zip" which is its alternative seems to have vanished utterly from the internet, sigh.) So yes, I'm down to grasping at straws.
Did I mention the maddening part?
I'm aiming to put together a for-real, once-and-for-all solution to the GPS issues here, because everywhere else it's 2-3 years old and nothing referenced anywhere has worked for me. I know this phone is a little long in the tooth, and dev has basically stopped, but am I really the only one still in this boat?
Thanks - seriously - for ANY help with this.

Update:
T15 kernel (?) caused a sleep of death over lunch.
Completely eliminating the GPS info (App "GPS Status & Toolbox" -> Settings -> Reset) and letting it sit with no internet access for oh, about an HOUR led to a post-reboot fix in a reasonable amount of time.
Oh, also I removed the "SUPL" info - per this post.
Of course, then my battery was wasted, so I'm recharging to test again later.
Honestly people - is this phone worth it? I only "upgraded" from my HTC Thunderbolt for the 4G - which, I admit, is nice when I'm not on wifi...

This phone has always had GPS issues.
The last baseband helped a bit, but it was never fully resolved.
I still use this phone, and still use the GPS on it nearly daily for tracking my hikes and bike rides.
My steps:
Run GPS Test.
If locked, great, done.
If not, wait about 10-15 seconds.
If it doesn't lock within that time, it will never lock without a reboot, no matter how long you wait.
Reboot.
Run GPS Test again.
<Repeat the above steps>
Generally I have noticed that 95% of the time, that a lock will happen after a reboot.
The other 5% of the time, you will have to reboot again.
The other annoyance for me is that during runtime, while you are using the GPS, it will just lose lock.
If that happens, you are toast. It will never come back without a reboot.
I don't even bother waiting, hoping it will come back.
As soon as it loses lock, I do a reboot.
On reboot, it generally locks right away again.

gps testing, puzzling results

i went on a few drives today to test out my gps, the odd thing is i couldnt get it to misbehave in a significant way. i am using eugenes ginger clone and da_g's update.zip using his own jupiter.xml. i chose his control plane version. i also used some files from jj4 not because i thought they were better but because i was experimenting with the jm9 "FIX" files but wanted to revert back and grabbed the wrong ones from my computer.
my lbs test settings were:
Sesssion Type: tracking
Test Mode: s/w Test
Operation mode: Standalone
Start mode: Hot start
GPS Plus: OFF
Dynamic accuracy: OFF
accuracy: 50
Logging: OFF
supl settings:
server: supl.google.com
port: 7276
secure socket: off
agps mode: control plane
"use wireless networks" in setting>location and security, was not selected
i ran several my tracks trying to recreate the situation described by Da_g where the gps position jumps around and locks are lost when mytracks is in the foreground and lbs in the background but is accurate in the opposite situation. i wanted to see if any "fix" would help this situation, be it a modem file or gps library from other rom but could not create the unstable situation observed by others. this bugged me because i have had serious trouble with google maps acting erratically while all my stationary tests come out fine. the problem is i never used the gps on this rom and did not know if it suffers from this problem in the first place.
it appears this rom does not have that particular problem or the problem is not predictable or can not be caused at will.
i ran a few my tracks with jm9 files. the results were mediocre at best, did it help? nope
did it hurt? maybe, not sure but probably not.
then i ran the test with jj4 files. did it help? maybe but probably not, tests did appear slightly better but were not free of imperfections
did it hurt? nope
on each test i ran one my tracks with mytracks in the forground and lbs in the background then another with lbs in the foreground and my tracks in the background.
observation: phone did not lose gps signal upon starting any app or switching to any app like others reported. tracking results were too close to call. i used similar routes with clear skys and the accuracy was similar when compared on the same road. with lbs up front i could watch the reported accuracy, it mostly jumped from 10 to 30m occasionally hitting 5, and spending more time at 10. average was about 15meter accuracy.
then for s's and g's i ran my tracks behind maps navigation to see if navigation would aggravate the bad behavior. well it didn't. perfect results! this is both reassuring and disapointing. while i can be a little more confident in my gps which in the past has been good except when using google navigation it also make me wonder if maybe the gps is just plain unstable and cant be predicted.
did samsung get it right in the base rom that eugene worked from? did using control plane fix it? did i just get lucky today with different results tomorrow? does touchwiz somehow cause the problems(not likely but who knows)? eugene did a pretty good job of removing touchwiz from samsung sources, not true aosp but it would fool most.
did i stumble on a unique combination thus fixing my gps? im sure the answer is no. it is either in the control plane settings with da_g's mods or in the rom itself.
the jl3 modem seems to get a slightly better signal but is certainly not a "fix"
will you have similar results? dont know, try it. but be warned that the rom is giving me some funny battery reporting and the standard recalibration isnt really working. i also had some random shutdowns when i used juice defender(maybe a bad install on the app) it also is not likely to work with samsung widgets and the video player wont play those weird media hub files.
i do believe that axura was built off the same base rom (im really not sure about this, just a hunch) but i had no luck with gps on that rom, i didnt use axura long enough to try fixing it but others report it as being very good.
i wonder if anyone has looked into available ram as a cause? eugenes rom seems to have a small memory footprint and i often have over 200mb free! could minfree be killing a service when ram runs low? could a setting in other roms be killing a service when exiting some gps apps for the sake of ram/battery usage?
im not a dev and would have no idea where to start on this. i also know that much files that control gps are proprietary and cant be fixed by the community, we can only hope to identify the problem and employ a workaround to prevent problematic situations assuming that the proprietary files are infact more or less functional. will samsung employ a fix? well i think with the number of identified problems with the gps that the galaxy s was released prematurely. samsung likely rushed the release to get a bunch of ooohs and ahhhhs without doing enough testing. it appears that they are incrementally improving gps performance over several builds and it may continue to get better, maybe over several updates. untill then ill use eugenes rom. i also think that if froyo builds did not help you then you may have an antenna issue!
ill attach the my tracks file when i have time.
i would like to thank clshortfuse and especially Da_G for there efforts. Da_G i hope you find a solution that we can all use regardless of rom, or maybe you can cook up a rom yourself, people would definately use it..

Odd GPS issues

OK, so I've dug around the forums and have yet to really find anyone who had a similar issue and wasn't able to fix it with either FasterFix or GPSStatus so thought I'd start a new thread. If anyone knows this answer and knows it's in another thread then let me know and I'll shut this one down...
Anyways, the issue in a nutshell is that Maps refuses to work without "Wireless Networks" being checked (it throws up an error that tells me to turn on My Locations or to turn on either "Wireless Networks" or "GPS satellites" even though GPS sats is checked in the settings) and even then the accuracy is horrible (on tower-based, which is more or less to be expected since it's a triangulation, I believe), Navigation/Locations will both get a location but it appears to be "Wireless Network" based, GPSStatus shows a max of only 3/3 sats even outside on a clear day but no other app sees those even those 3 sats. I basically think my GPS chip is locked up. (Is that even possible?)
The GPS issues started one night on CoreDroid's V5.0 after working for quite some time on CD's various builds, including working on 5.0, so I flashed up to 5.1 and still no-go. Wiped everything, reflashed 5.1 and still nothing. Moved over to RCMixHD 5.9 and it still acts up. It used to be that I could uncheck "Wireless Networks" and it would just bounce off of the GPS sats but now nothing seems to see the chip. I've wiped everything, reflashed numerous times, flashed a new radio (the latest Mar leaked GB radio), gone inside, outside, around the house, around the town, etc etc etc, cleared the Maps cache, uninstalled/reinstalled Maps, reinstalled Locations several times, reset the GPS state with GPS Status, redownloaded the GPS data w/ GPS Status, changed out the gps.spade.so file in CoreDroid 5.0/1 with one from the Inspire Dev Forum (I think, may have been General) that modded files based off of FasterFix files that were supposed to fix the GPS if FasterFix doesnt (the files worked for a whole one test...then everything quit working right again) and I've reset the NTP to North America's server via FasterFix and STILL nothing. I'm getting rather frustrated at this point and any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!
How about flashing back to stock Rom?
Sent from my calculator
What would the advantage be? I mean I've already flashed different ROMs and gotten the same issue so part of me doesn't care to flash another couple of times but another part of me wonders why it'd help any since it's just going to be overwritten when I flash back to RC or any other custom. Will flashing to stock somehow reset the GPS. I know flashing to stock is generally one of the first suggestions but I've always wondered how it actually helps. Guess I'm off to hunt down the stock on my computer while I wonder lol...thanks
Did you use RUU to get back to stock Rom and radio? RUU does more than just flash the Rom. It flashes the radio to stock. Only reason I'm saying this is cause someone else had Gps issues and when they went to stock unrooted, everything worked as it should.

Do a forum search for inspire RUU. Should come up.

Awesome, thanks. I was unaware that the Inspire had an RUU. Well, most RUU's I've run across have been packaged into a program like ODIN but I think I can do the RUU manually via ADB. Hopefully they have a program out, though. Think all my stock stuff has been done via ADB and the Hack Kit so I'll dig around for an all-in-one program. Thanks!
Sadness...no such luck even on RUU stock.
Just curious, what method did you use to do this?
Is this the same one you used?

I have been having similar GPS issues on my stock Inspire. After a long HTC customer service call, I was advised to do a factory reset on the phone. Voila, the problem appears to be solved. I now get 8 or 9 satellites and lock in about 30 seconds. Also, after this reset, my battery life is much better. So, I am not sure what bug I eliminated in the factory reset, but I accomplished something. What would affect both battery and GPS? I know this is not the same as for a rooted phone, but perhaps there is some connection. By the way, just what SNR do users with solid GPS performance get on GPS Test? I never get SNR over 25 on any satellite, whether indoors or out...
HtcOmega,
I helped another person with an inspire, so maybe it might work for you too, Try the link in my sig and see if replacing the gps.conf with one of mine may help you. It has been very successful so far, it might help with your dilema as well. And if your going to ask whats different about mine then fasterfix app, the answer is alot.
Let me know.

I was having the same issue as HtcOmega and decided check out your link. I must say that my GPS is working as it should now. Takes at most 30 seconds for a lock without the case on. I flashed the north america zip instead of choosing the north east version. Is there any reason why you wanted people to choose their specific region?
Primarily the reason is I broke up the USA into 6 regions and made a script for 62+ individual countries because I am not using the generic ntp servers from the pool, these are ntp servers specifically for that location, and by narrowing down the location and not using a general ntp it should make lock times faster. If you read the thread for the most part quick reading you will see that the NA script is made primarily for people who travel to many places frequently and do not want to keep changing scripts, as well as people in the common wealth countries would use the NA script.
I am currently testing out 1.2 with a handful of beta testers to see if the new script can be a little more consistent, there are new commands in the new script, which is phase one at least for the HD2 since the HD2 is a prt and lacks the support for true agps.

Bad gps on SynergyROM

Hey guys is me again lol. I just flashed the newest SynergyROM update ( 1.7 ) and my gps doesnt show me at the correct location. It keeps moving around my area, mostly 3 to 4 blocks away from me. i didnt mind that however when i go on navigation, the directions are incorrect due to the location being wrong. Is there a fix for this? I did a full wipe before installing just like instruction on the thread and i installed it after going back to stock and rooting.

i did check it and tried going to stock and then back to synergy and still same issue.
Edit: I just started reading many of the comments and i guess i will wait for the next update. Battery life is too good to quit the rom.
Thanks for the reply
From what I read about it, and I've been following the thread because I use Synergy, its possible that it is a hardware issue. Or its possible that you need to Odin back to stock and start over. I've been flashing and reflashing Synergy since 1.0 (or maybe it was 1.1) and haven't had much in the way of issues, GPS works fine.
I'm on one of the nightlies right now, have you tried using the current nightly? Not sure what else I can suggest, I'm pretty new to it all really.
hope this gets fixed
If you flash back to stock does GPS work fine
Ive seen a few posts that gps doesnt work and they have been told flash back then flash rom, but my question is when back to stock does gps work then? if not maybe its the phone its self
I have not had any problems even VZW can find me if i turn gps off

This may not the best route, but it has worked for me so far:
I'm also on v1.7 (Odined back to stock unrooted; rooted via GS3_debugfs-root_r2; CWM 6.0.1.0; clean v1.7 install with data/cache/dalvik wipes) and this is what I did when I initially flashed and noticed GPS locking issues:
1. Toggled GPS
2. Went outside & launched GPS Test
3. Updated AGPS
4. Once the "In Use" # of satellites in GPS Test showed 2 or more I launched Google maps and got an immediate lock.
Since the initial flashing of v1.7 when I have GPS locking issues:
1. Toggle GPS
2. Go outside and launch GPS Test.
3. Once the "In Use" # of satellites in GPS Test show 2 or more I launch Google maps. I usually then get an immediate lock. I also verify with Waze.
I noticed that if I keep GPS on, then I don't have to launch GPS Test to get a lock. However, if I turn GPS off and toggle it back on right before I need it, my GPS lock takes longer. If I'm waiting past 30 secs for a lock, I just launch GPS Test and wait for the "In Use" number to populate before going back to Maps or Waze
Is your Wifi on? Sounds strange but the same thing was happening to me and it said turn the Wifi on and I locked in after being 3 blocks off

I actually got my gps problem fixed. I odin back to root66 and did a factory reset there and ran maps, the gps was working fine. Then i upgraded to the newest synergy and gps is working fine as well. I did a full wipe before going to synergy.

Stock Verizon GPS stopped working

So I land in Orlando on vacation, get my rental car, and enter the hotel address into Maps ready to push the navigation button as soon as I'm out of the garage. I do this and gps can't get a fix. I start driving in a random direction assuming it'll get a fix soon. Long story short, it never does!
I've been using gps, maps, navigation all with no issues until now. Had my phone since mid July. Tried restarting, tried battery pull, of course gps on/off a million times. Downloaded a free gps test app - if I was reading it right it seemed to show about 8-12 satellites it was picking up but 0 fixes. It's like the gps hardware is working fine but it won't get a fix on my location.
I'm on stock ROM. Haven't done anything weird or installed any new apps other than a fee games.
Any suggestions? I was counting on having maps/navigation while on vacation.

The only thing I can think of is reprovision/factory reset. *2767*3855#. You'll lose EVERYTHING on your phone though. Make a backup first. If that doesn't work I don't know of any other way to fix GPS.
It sounds like the GPS receiver is working if it shows satelites, it just needs to download the catalog. You might try going outside and running some GPS software for an hour and getting a good download. Or you should be able to download a program like GPSstatus. then go to menu, tools, manage a-gps. From there do a RESET, then a DOWNLOAD. Then go outside for a while and you should start seeing fixes on satellites.
I like worwig's suggestion. I'm not familiar with GPS fixes, so it's great if what he said will work. Reprovisioning tends to fix anything related to radio problems (if IMEI was never lost)

Tried this. Problem still persists. Can't get lock in Maps unless I let it go for over a minute. If I use GPS Test or GPS Status, it IMMEDIATELY reports 27 satellites in view, but shows connected to 0 for a good 20~30 seconds, then slowly starts to connect to one at a time.
Again, fully stock, non-rooted, locked bootloader.
try this in the Market:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlab.gpsfix&feature=search_result#?t=W10.
its been listed in other forums that it works, and as i haven't used it myself, will go by what others say that works.
if nothing else, its free

This is the ONLY app I have not tried on the market and I finally got a working gps on my S3 with Synergy Rom & Unlocked bootloader (of course) ... So thank you for the mention of the app!
Thanks to everyone who's tried to help. I've tried everything here except for a factory reset which was my last resort. So far nothing has worked. The first time I did the GPS Test thing, it worked, but then 5 minutes later when I went to use maps, it wasn't working again. I tried the other app - GPSfix as well - nothing. Also spent an hour on the phone with a Verizon Tech trouble shooting - not that I thought they'd know more than I could find on my own here, but figured it was worth a try.
I'll be factory resetting in a week or so (don't wanna do it now cause I don't have time to reset up everything on my phone right now). When I do I'll report back. Also I did find over on droidforums that there are several people who've had this exact same issue with their S3 - GPS worked fine then suddenly didn't work at all. So it may be a bigger glitch that's triggered somehow in some phones. All I know is I need my gps working and reliable on my phone...
If anyone else has had this issue and figured it out, let us know. Otherwise, I'll report back after the factory reset...

Hollywood,
Just out of curiosity, were you ever running Synergy?
With my situation, it took three calls to VZW, and an hour-long phone call to Samsung (which resolved nothing) to get a new phone shipped to me. The only good thing that came from the Samsung phone call was that I used it as ammunition when calling VZW the last time ("Look, I was even on the phone with Samsung tech support for an hour today, and they couldn't help me."). The Samsung rep had never even heard of the term "GPS Lock" and didn't understand the concept. She was totally convinced that if the blue arrow came up in Google Maps, that my GPS was working as it should, despite the still-flashing GPS icon and the "Searching for GPS" message in the pull-down screen. Also, she didn't think it was a problem that my positional accuracy never got closer than 3,400 meters.
A complete factory reset didn't help me; I even used Odin to reload stock, non-rooted, locked bootloader OTA ROM with original kernels, recovery, radios, etc.
I also tried the re provisioning dialer code, which didn't help.
I tried the GPS Fix program, GPS Test, GPS Status, and everything else I thought looked promising. Nothing helped.
GPS Fix helped after initial lock, but only while it kept GPS control. Once it released "fix", Maps would go back to having the same problem getting a lock after a while.
Good luck!
Search for the agps patch. Any forum will work. It works on all android. I just flashed it and I'm running beans. It also works for like cm. I used the 3.1 cwm flashable patch. It locks gos on instantly.

GPS Issues
So now that I have my new SGS3 on the way (should be here in two days) my GPS starts working again out of the blue. No changes to my phone, no new apps. Too weird that after three weeks of it not working right, it suddenly works perfectly again.
At least the issue shouldn't repeat once the completely new phone arrives.

My phone is doing something very similar, it's finding various satellites and finding a fix on 3 of them. Although, in Google Maps and Navigation, it will stay stuck on searching for GPS. This phone has been great since day 1 including GPS, strange that it will stop working just like that. I tried clearing data for Maps, running other GPS utilities, and a factory reset to no avail.
Decided to phone Verizion, and they will send me another S3 (refurb).. Hoping the new one works as it should.

[Q] GPS won't lock

All,
Hope you can help. I've been happily using my Desire S with GPS for a couple of years now, mostly on Reaper 3.0 this year and 4.0 since I came out, but also on other ROMs (Endy, Fallout, JellyTime). However at some point in the last few weeks (maybe while test flashing some recent CM10 builds) I no longer get a GPS lock. If I fire up GPS Test or Maps or whatever, the GPS icon keeps flashing, and I've left it for 20 mins at times. Occasionally I'll see some satellites in GPStest, so I know that my reciever works, but I never get a lock.
There are quite a few comments about this scattered across other threads and for other devices, so I've tried quite a few things..
- Used faster fix to set my NTP server to UK.
- Used GPS test to clear and download agps.
- Used Reaper Settings to apply AGPS fix.
- Restored stock gps.conf to the standard - seems to be the same across most ROMs,
- Then used GPS Test to reload aGPS again.
- then retried all of the above in different combinations.
- Flashed CM10 (both nk111 and Flinny), same behaviour.
At one point last week using GPS Test on Reaper 4.0 the icon stopped flashing and I apparently got a lock, but the accuracy was about 4000ft and didn't improve.
I know for other devices you can clear a partition to 'cold start' your GPS. Does such a process exist for the Desire S?
I'm wondering if I've got something cached on my SD card that's persistent across ROM flashes and is screwing my GPS. I've tried using Cachemate to clear everything I felt safe doing, but that didn't help either.
I guess I could format my SD card, but that sounds pretty scary to me and a lot of effort to restore all the stuff I've got on there. Especially as I don't really know if it would help.
Any suggestions?
Matt
It might be a case of bad antenna contact. HW, not SW. When something persists after factory reset - that's probably the case.

Is that something I can get my local phone repair shop to look at - ie check connectors are seated etc? Or it is a fairly terminal resoldering type issue? Do you know?
Matt
Out of interest, My phone hes been running GPS Test on Reaper 4.0 now for the last 20 mins. It's seen 6 satellites at best all at a SNR of around 15-20, but still flashing the GPS icon and not locking.
Matt
6 satellites are very few.
It might be as simple as connectors issue.
The GPS antenna is on the top plastic, near the LED.

I did look into that. I believe that's the same AGPS patch that Reaper Settings will apply, but I did try it independantly. It's just an updated /system/etc/gps.conf as far as I can tell. Didn't make any difference for me though.

So, I prised off the camera cover to reveal the Wifi and GPS antennas. Scuffed the contacts a bit with my thumbnail and lifted the spring contacts slightly to increase the contact pressure.
Popped the cover back on, replaced the battery, turned the phone back on, and voila! Loads of GPS reception. Loads of satellites. Very fast lock.
Pretty simple process too.
Thanks for your advice everyone.
Matt
