I'll try to keep it short and keep a clear overview.
I rooted my Nexus 5 with the Towelroot app. Everything went perfectly fine (I had to do a recovery, but after that, Nexus running smooth and it was rooted.
Then I decided to try something stupid. Alter the Nfcnci.apk so that the NFC TAG scanning app was silent instead of the end.ogg noise when scanning a NFC tag.
It all went wrong when I merged the unpacked .apk files back into a .rar and convert it to a .apk with "formatter" program.
When I tried to put the NfcNci.apk app back in the system/app folder with authorisation 664 it didn't work anymore. the stock app crashed.
The nfc part of my phone wasn't working anymore ! (when opening NFC tools, i got a NFC ERROR message... apparently, i did something wrong when trying to replace the app with my modded version)
So i did the most stupid thing I could have done: instead of putting the original NfcNci.apk file back into the system/app folder I did a hard reset recovery (go into Recovery mode, wipe data)............
Now, with my freshly recovered nexus 5..... I CAN'T GO INTO SETTINGS to turn on USB debugging (because I clearly wanted to put the original 4.4.3 image back on my phone)
so i'm stuck with a phone that :
1) is rooted.
2) doesn't go into settings so I can't turn on USB debugging
3) doesn't go onto the app store because i can't link my google account because i can't go into Settings.
4) is actualy a dumbphone now. The only thing I can do is use stock apps and call and text someone.
Could someone PLEASE put me out of my misery?
i'm litteraly crying here. I had this phone for 2 weeks.....
I want to unroot the damn thing and go back to the way it was....
Best regards,
Tom
1) questions go into the Q&A forum.
2) you shouldnt mod stuff when you're not sure what you are doing
3) factory reset in recovery does not fix any mods you have made to /system, it only wipes data.
4) follow this to go back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
Fastboot doesn't need usb debugging on. Flash the stock files with fasboot. You will get back to stock but ur data will get erase.
or simply just flash the system.img which won't erase ur data
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img

Yup, just pull the stock factory image from Google developers website and unpack it. Put system.img into your fastboot directory. Use CMD (assuming you're on Windows) and CD to that location and fastboot flash system system.img, like he said.
If you have trouble with fastboot follow the first link given to you.
thanks
Thank you all very much for your help.
I managed to put the stock img back to my phone.
the problem was that my phone wasn't unlocked, therefore I couldn't enter the fastboot command lines.
Phone is back to stock 4.4.3.
@Zepius you are right, you shouldn't mod stuff if you don't know what you are doing, but you do have to go through a learning process... you also had to do it for the first time once, right?
I think my big mistake was, not to follow the amazing guides here in XDA on how to root, change apk's etc etc...
one more question. IF you take a stock app (NfcNci.apk) do you have to sign it to be able to get it to work?
All i wanted to do was unpack the apk, change a sound file and repack it so that the darn NFC tag doesn't make that sound when I scan a tag, waking up my wife when i put it to sleep mode...
well, guess i'll hang the tag somewhere outside of our room
again, thank you all for your help and not bashing me.

Don't sign system apps, just take the AndroidManifest.xml and META-INF folder out of the original .apk, open the modified one with 7zip or your alternative and paste it in.

hey all
i root my nexus s and now he dosent starting up
i have only google logo and the lock picture at the bottom
i have clockwork installed.
how can i load a new rom from this situtation?
where can i get a img file in order to use fastboot?
turn phone off.. hold volume up + power then go down to recovery.
1. nandroid restore
2. flash a ROM
i dont have a nandroid, i have a clockwork.
please guide me what to do cuz all this android thing is new to me and i can't use the phone right now
go to the development forum and download a nandroid and put it on your phone by mounting it via USB
or download a ROM and flash. (wipe dalvik, cache, factory first)
how can i copy it via usb? the phone dosent start up
the only solution is SDK?
i try to copy files into the device using adb push
it seems like it was copied but i cant see any new files there

no.. when you flash clockwork recovery and boot into it.. go into Mounts and Storage and on the bottom "mount USB"... it'll mount like if your phone is on, just copy paste it in there
ok i got it! i manage to install cm7 now and it's working but i didnt manage to backup my stock version.
1.is it possible to go back to stock rom without a backup?
2.i first try to change rom cuz of the known freezing problem, any of you nexus users know any thing new about it?
you can get a stock nandroid backup posted in the dev forum, there is also a thread on how odin back to stock
ok thanks!
Ok, so tried to install a theme from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533858
I ran the 4th command and it said /sdcard/blurhome2.apk no such file or directory then my phone reboots out of nowhere.
I did copy the file to my SDCARD but it says it wasnt there and rebooted on its own. Now I get to the ATT logo and it stays there. I can still run ADB commands if I reboot in BP Tools or something like that.
Is there any way to unsoftbrick it to recover my data? I knew I should of have done a backup of it before starting but it never gave me problems before so I said eff it. I regret it now.
EDIT: I just realized where it all went wrong, I was in mass storage mode instead of Charge Only. So yea, any way to help me recover my data? I don't mind wiping and starting from scratch, I just need to get some text messages and some #'s, the rest doesn't matter. I already have the FXZ and RSD lite prepared but I dont want to do it till jim, JRW or LFABER or any other knowledgeable dev says "You're SOL, nothing you can do"
EDIT #2: I can receive calls, but the home launcher will not show up and the drop down thing wont work. But it seems all my background processes are working (JuiceDefender, APPLOCK, 3g Watchdog)
EDIT #3: Using Droid explorer (Windows software to view your device) I am able to see all the files my phone has and its missing Blurhome2.apk in the /System/App folder. I cant seem to copy it in there. Its still in mass storage mode too whenever i connect it.
EDIT #4: WOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! I got it working, followed jims steps on another post that had nothing to do with this. Just pushed the blurhome2.apk onto my /data/local/ folder and then ran adb through the shell, remounted the system and copied the apk into the /system/app/ folder. Ran chmod command, reboot and voila back in business *goes and makes a CWM backup*
So many edits. Lol

Well, good to see you got it worked out .
Just for the record, if you ever do get in one of those situations where RSD Lite is your only option you can easily edit the xml file to remove the part where it wipes userdata... i.e. it flashes back to stock and retains your data

Here are the files and instructions to get root and CWM on a Samsung Conquer 4G with the FC17 update. To enter Download Mode on the phone, make sure the phone is turned off and plugged into the wall charging. You should also make sure the phone has a good charge on it. Then turn the phone on by pressing the volume down and camera button and holding them while pressing the power button for a few seconds.
Here are the files you will need -
CONQUER-ROOT.zip
Unzip all the files on your computer and follow these steps.
1) Enter download mode on the phone and plug it into your computer. Open up the Odin program. Then press the OPS button and select the SPH-D600_FC17_CWM.ops file. Then press the PDA button and select the SPH-D600_FC17_CWM.tar.md5 file. The press the Start button, the images should install and the phone reboot. Congrats, your phone now has a stock FC17 image with a CWM Recovery.
2) Next, copy the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip and su-bin-3.0.3.2-efghi-signed.zip files to the root of your SD Card after booting up.
3) Once the phone boots up, go into settings, select Applications, then Development, then turn on USB debugging. Now you can restart the phone into recovery mode with adb. If you don't want to use adb, you can plug the phone into the wall and turn it on while holding the volume down and power button. Either way is fine, as long as you now get the phone into recovery mode.
4) The phone should now go into CWM recovery. Go to install zip from sdcard and select the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip file you put on the sdcard and install that. Next select the su-bin-3.0.3.2-efghi-signed.zip file from your sdcard and install that.
5) Congratulations, you now have a rooted phone with the FC17 update. If you had CWM installed before, you can now do an advanced back-up, and just restore the data from your most recent backup and get all your data back.
I've created a new custom ROM here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29369141
You can just download the new files and follow those instructions if you haven't installed this yet.
it work like charm thank you very much sir very good job done..........

I know on the E4GT, sfhub is able to make tar's that do not wipe user data. The file difference between the 2 images are
removed: boot.bin, sbl.bin, param.lfs, cache.img, data.img
intact: recovery.bin, hidden.img, factoryfs.img(largest file) modem.bin and zImage(contains the kernel)
The Question I'm posing to you is which of the files in the conquer tar.md5 might be the counterparts to the above files, making them the ones to strip out in order to make it not wipe data?
My wife never wanted me to root her phone until recently, so no cwm backup that's pre-OTA, and there are some apps that don't work when re-installed (a security key-gen app)
Any help would be much appreciated.

Take out userdata.yaffs to retain your data, BUT you will have to rebuild the tar file and remake the OPS file by removing the line that reads -
Code:
9,userdata
If you need the Linux commands to rebuild the image, let me know.

Just install Cygwin and use that and then extract all the files out of the .md5 file, it's just a regular tar file with md5 sums in it. WinZip, WinRAR, etc. will easily extract the files from it. Then use these commands to rebuild the image without the userdata.yaffs file.
tar -H ustar -c adsp.mbn amss.mbn appsboot.mbn boot.img cache.yaffs mibib osbl recovery.img system.yaffs > package_name.tar
md5sum -t package_name.tar >> package_name.tar
mv package_name.tar package_name.tar.md5

You can replace each package_name with whatever you want it called.

Thanks for your help, took me a bit, because I mistakenly flashed the non-CWM image first, and the bootloader version just wasn't letting me in. Luckily I have a jig for my SGS2, and I'm up and running now. Hopefully just the fact that it's the full image, rather than OTA upgraded will fix some of the issues she's been having. If not, then having root gives me so many more troubleshooting options.

Question
I have been reading up on this phone since I ordered it from my new provider. I should get the phone sometime later today and wanted to get everything ready to root it as soon as I get it. I've read JWhip804's tutorial on how to root the Conquer. I've also been keeping up with chrystal0925's efforts at making a working themed ROM.
My question is, if I want to have a recovery of my stock phone just in case I have to send it back to my carrier, should I use the method described in this thread or use JWhip804's thread?
I have a brand new Samsung Conquer SPHD600BKS on the Sprint network using a new provider to my area called Ting.
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: S: D600.12 x.EG15
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-perf
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.EG15
Hardware Version: D600.12
Thanks.

Super-One-Click only works on EC15, and you can not do an OTA update to FC17 with root, and once you do update to FC17, Super-One-Click will no longer work to root your phone, so you must use the method I have made in this thread, or a similar one to it. You MUST get a stock FC17 image with the CWM recovery to push root onto your phone, as the OTA update has recovery updating scripts, etc. in it, and it's just easier to use the FC17 image and not bother with making the OTA able to be rooted. In order to get the phone back to a stock image, you can easily find the stock Odin image that is floating around, or change the recovery image in the Odin file I have in this thread, with a stock recovery image.

I just finished backing up my Conquer using this guide. It was really easy. Thanks.
Hi guys. Anyone use tethering with this? I had tethering working on the old rom fine and another unrooted phone with the ota update. I got a replacement phone and tethering does not work. It only works for google sites - with any tethering app i tried. Is it the hardware or maybe its the stock fc17? I tried reflashing and clearing everything and the problem persists.
I tried using Odin today to root my Samsung Conquer and had a bit of trouble. When I attached the .tar file it gave me an error but as I read this thread I just kept going as if there was no issue. About half way through the Odin installation my phone just rebooted, I tried again and it rebooted it the same spot. I tried putting my phone back into download mode and continue the process, which it did, and I got a "Pass" message at the end. But I don't have CWM and I'm almost positive its still not rooted. Any suggestions?
Any chance of an update with the new OTA included?

Hey Guys,
Brand new to XDA and new to messing with my phone in anyway, I looked through some threads, but am not sure if I can mess something up worse by not following the right steps,
I basically bought a used phone on craigslist, AT&T LG G FLEX 2 - LG-H950 and when I factory reset it, many of the default apps are not installed, cannot use my calendar and the phone is just a little off all together.
Not sure if the phone is still rooted or if the factory reset cleared it, and I am all together worried that the only reason the kid sold it to me was because he messed it up and couldn't fix it and just pawned it off to my dumas
I know its frowned upon to start new threads when the answers are out there, but i need this for work ASAP and if I screw it up and cant use it all Ill have to go back to my work iPhone (last resort, i hate it)
I started to follow hyelton's video http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089
but got cold feet when i couldnt find my exact model the h950
It is currently on the android 5.0.1 and when i tried the update before i reset it, it said i couldn't update it something about the root. So i reset it and everything is the same as when I bought it on CraigList.
How do I get it back to square one, like it came in the box. I am interested in learning how to root and be in control of my own property, but I just want to get back to the start safely without bricking it so I can follow the forums and not feel so helpless.
im sorry if the first response to this just point me to another thread, but I will appreciate even that much guidance so at least i know i am headed in the right direction
Thanks a lot xda community

Factory reset won't remove root BTW. Recent Android phones seem to perform an integrity check prior to updating that fails when root is present.

Just read that to get the phone back to stock, then you'll be able to upgrade to 11x (5.1.1) and eventually 11z.

I made an account with MEGA
downloaded the Flex2Tool 1.4.1 and unzipped
downloaded the system.img.gz
Started watching your video. however i am not bricked.
it has missing default apps and it says this device is suspected in rooting, software update is not available for rooted device.
so what is my first step after downloading these files. do i connect phone to my computer and open up the flex2tool and
select variant 1 which is H950 v10d etc
then do I select 1 , ( i do not need anything on the phone.)
or move straight to variant 2. restore unroot stock system.
if i do that next where do I put the system.img.gz file on my phone. anywhere in the internal memory and before or after I reset it?
sorry for all the questions and thanks for all the help. i am very new to doing anything besides calling or texting on my phone

1. You first need the LG USB drivers for the Flex to be installed
2. The system image file (gz) will have a .img file inside that's about 4GB, so unzip the one you downloaded with 7zip, preferably from a PC. Put the .img file on the root of the phone's internal memory before proceeding. You'll also want USB debugging enable and disable the verify over USB option
3. Once file is on phone you can continue with the tool, it will eventually go into download mode & show ## when finished

Like that. Check that the USB debugging icon shows in the notification area while USB is connected as MTP. Then you can start the tool. Be sure that the .img is present on the root(sdcard0) prior to letting the tool reboot the phone.

.gz like .rar or .zip are different types of compression, so download the latest version of winrar or use 7zip, you need the system.img file (4gb)

finally did it. Thanks alot you and ace were a life saver
Not exactly a newbie but I've been on iPhone for a while and I'm reaquainting myself with rooting.
But I made a made a stupid mistake. I accidentally downloaded a rom for the pixel 2 rather than three and flashed it. I can't get back into recovery or boot up at all. It gets into bootloader menu however.
My question is does flashing stock image from fastboot delete my internal storage? i.e. where my nandroid would be stored? If so, any way to keep storage files? Or do I just need to start at square one?

Edit the flash-all.bat file and remove the -w near the end. That will save user data and apps. It may not work though, ROMs often require a data wipe when you remove them. But since yours never booted up I am hopeful.
Thanks! I'll be able to give it a shot later. I'll let you know[emoji106]

You can flash the factory image without wiping the phone. However, to do this, you need to edit a file named flash-all.bat (if you're using Linux, you need to edit the file named flash-all.sh). Open the file in a text editor and near the end of the file you'll see a line that says this.
Code:
fastboot -w update image-blueline-pq2a.190405.003.zip
Remove the -w so it looks like this.
Code:
fastboot update image-blueline-pq2a.190405.003.zip
Save it, then close it, then reopen it to make sure the -w is gone. Doing that should allow you to flash it without wiping the phone. That said, since you flashed the wrong image to begin with, I don't know if it will boot without wiping data or not. You can give it a try though. If it doesn't boot, you can add the -w back and do it again. Hopefully it'll boot with the -w removed. Can't hurt to try.

Thanks for the help. I tried this but no go. Oh well, it was worth a shot. And I learned a couple things in the process. I hadn't opened notepad in a long time.
