Can't seem to get SU installed on VZW M8 - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hi all. I hate asking for help because I feel like a weenie, but this has me stumped.
I've successfully rooted my M8 in the past with Weaksauce and SuperSU, but recently I had to return my phone to factory.
Now I can run Weaksauce, it says "Phone successfully rooted", but when I run Superuser the binaries won't install. When I run it, it says "The SU binary needs to be updated. Continue?"
I hit continue, it installs for a few seconds, and then says "Installation Failed! Please reboot and try again."
I've uninstalled and reinstalled both Weaksauce and SuperSU at least a dozen times now, I've rebooted with adb reboot, nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

I can't install firewater either. It won't allow SU to be accessed. Here's where I get stuck:
C:\adb>adb reboot
C:\adb>adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp

C:\adb>adb shell

I followed the steps in the guide on XDA for rooting the M8:
Install Weaksauce
Install SuperSU
Run Weaksauce- says "Root Achieved" when complete"
Run SuperSU- Says binaries can't be found, needs to install them. It then attempts to install and that's when the "Failed, reboot and try again" message appears.
Did ADB reboot and re-ran Weaksauce and SuperSU. Same results.
Uninstalled, did ADB reboot, reinstalled. Same results.
Obviously Firewater won't install either since root is not working.
My coworker just texted me that he picked up an M8 last night and is having the same problem. I hope there wasn't an update that broke things.

You cant update the binaries until you SOFF, weaksauce allows a temproot of XBIN, so the commands can be pushed to the phone via adb shell. Did you grant ADB Shell root access when it prompted?

after installing weaksauce, when you do an adb reboot, do you wait like 30-40 seconds for the toast of root successful to appear? then do the wait-for-device push. then adb shell, then the phone (make sure you are on the home screen, not blinkfeed or anything should ask for root access

. All you need to do is install weaksauce then install supersu no need to even open it. Then proceed with firewater an once a-off you can flash the supersu zip via recovery....it's very simple I just s-off 3 m8's an a m7 in literally 20 mins. Let me know if you get it.

Could be mismatched signatures. Get the Superuser Update Fixer from the Play Store and run it.

I actually didn't want to s-off. Is there a way to update the binaries without that?

[Q] [HELP]Problem flashing custom recovery after 4.2.2 OTA

I rooted me One SV when it was 4.1.2, Sense4+ I had CWM 6.0.3.2 on it. Then my device said an OTA is available for my device. So I *RELOCKED* the bootloader and applied the OTA by following instructions from here, which went perfectly fine!
Then I went and unlocked the bootloader again, using the HTCDev site, then went fine too.
Now after rebooting, I seem to have lost the root. So in the link above I went ahead to do Step 4, I got the lastest TWRP for and flashed it with fastboot, flashing went fine.:good:
Now went I go to HBOOT Menu and select 'Recovery', all I get is the HTC Splash screen and 'Entering Recovery...' written on top.
I don't know if it actually flashed any recovery or not, as far as fastboot command was concerned it didn't return with any error!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
It seems, you have k2u which has a new hboot with the OTA update.
You need a new recovery for that, which you can find here.

that does the trick for me! Back to the rooted state now Thanks a ton!
Btw, how can I remove bloatware from the new OTA? NoBloat Free app can't recognise that device is rooted, so can't remove anything really. (Hope this doesn't require me to open a new thread)
Also before 4.2.2 update I had real trouble permanently removing the system apps like 'Best Deals' etc. NoBloat Free removed them but they always came back as soon as I rebooted the device
Any other bloatware removal app that you know that can do the trick for me? Thanks in anticipation!
Kernel has system write protection, which means you either need a custom kernel with write protection removed (which actually don't exist) or you must be S-off.

So I must be S-OFF to be able to persist whatever I change between the reboots. Also another thing I noticed which is VERY annoying, after a while I loose the root 'state'!!!! Any reason why is that? Am I missing something?
Don't know about your root problem. But S-off is not wrong in my opinion.
If you are losing root then it sounds like it is temporary vice permanent... Interesting lol.

If your installing superSU as a system app, then every reboot the secure kernel is gonna kick it out......meaning lose root
Just keep superSU as a user app you'll be fine on reboots(with keeping root that is)

I've got Superuser (from ClockWorkMod) installed as a system app and its not that it doesn't ever get root access. It DOES get the root access once booted up. The access stays for a while, and then after a while when try to do something that requires root, it fails!
What I did, after reading your post, was uninstalled the Superuser app using Titanium Backup. And without rebooting, installed it again from the market. And after reboot is comes back as system app! Grrrr.... Please help!!!
My problem is almost like this the one described here.

I can write up a flashable zip that will remove the system superuser app and install it again straight to your user app location if you want. It will resolve the issue for you. Let me know. Won't take me long at all. I already have one done up. I would just have to make some slight changes in the updater-script.
Edit: I'm just gonna do it anyways, and I will come back with the link for you to download it. If you don't need it later then maybe someone else will down the road.

That will install su as a user app. it will also install and symlink Busybox and the su binary. When you open up SuperSU it won't ask for you to install the su binary. This is because I have taken care of that in the script. If you update through Google play then you will be given that request .

Firstly, thanks a lot that you promptly dished out the fix! I had SuperSU before Superuser but I wanted the one that could allow PIN protection thus Superuser. As in my previous post I tried to uninstalled it as a system app using Titanium Backup, and it was unsuccessful as the app is listed as system app under 'system/app/'. Though this, it seems to have fixed the problem of loosing

However, I'd like to apply that fix of yours, but with Superuser app, and not SuperSU. Please let me know if I could (and how to) change your fix without bothering you to do it yourself, that way learning a bit myself on doing these things

I could do that, but it would be easier for you to flash the zip I did and then go in to the superSU app >> settings >> switch superuser app.
That will basically clean your device of SuperSU so you can go on the Google play store and install a different superuser app of your choosing.

Cheers, I just did that. Switched the app to Superuser that I was using before. After flashing your zip I checked that Superuser is no longer a system app, which is partly what I wanted to do and thus achieved, so thank you. Though, I'd like to make a note that Superuser app asks for updating the su binary, as usual. I thought that was been taken care-of by your zip, or was it just for SuperSU? However, it remains to be seen if I loose the root again, between reboots.
Thanks again a lot.

Mine was doing the same. Let your battery get down to like 25% and then enter the command. The update won't install because of low battery. Then you can go into titanium and freeze software updates. Make sure you're not plugged into a charger when you when you enter the command.

took a while to wear my battery down, but got it done and so far so good. Thank you for the tip.
I had to uninstall the software update instead of just freezing it (I don't have the paid version). I figured freezing and uninstalling would have the same result ultimately. That shouldn't cause any problems right?
Naes said:
Mine was doing the same. Let your battery get down to like 25% and then enter the command. The update won't install because of low battery. Then you can go into titanium and freeze software updates. Make sure you're not plugged into a charger when you when you enter the command.

I wouldn't think so but maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in. Hopefully it doesn't try to download the update again.

(Q) Has anyone successfully rooted their Note Edge (N915T)?

as the title says, I'm looking to see if anybody knows or has been successful in figuring out how to Root the Note Edge.
I was thinking of using CF 910method but wanted to see what others have done before I started experimenting

I dont think many have tried yet. Only a few have gotten there device today, the others are waiting for it in the mail, And i believe all of us arent up to bricking rare device lol.
but yea ill wait on the root until there is a way to no trip knox. I like having the option of returning it. (some places check now)
Yeah I thought about it in being a guinea pig. I'm not trying to spend time recovering this thing.
Until then, I look forward to any positive word to root, not necessarily trying to maintain Knox, but that would be amazing.
I plan on trying today and will post an update. I have the tmobile version and will use the note 4 root method.
I read somewhere the tmobile note 4 root method from chainfire works on the tmobile note edge. I'll be trying that method when I get mine on monday from fedex.

I just successfully rooted using the t-mobile chainfire. I followed the directions exactly from the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 xda page. It's under general and stickied at the top. In Odin it said failed after flashing the chainfire tar but it appears to have worked just fine. I also flashed the twrp linked in the root how-to, then flashed super su in twrp.
I confirmed root by running SuperSu and also running Titanium Backup.

I haven't had any issues. I was concerned when Odin showed failed after flashing the chainfire tar but I went ahead and pulled the battery after giving it a moment, booted back into download mode and flashed the twrp recover. I got all the files from the post I linked above, except for Super Su. Follow at your own risk but things went pretty smoothe for me.

Thanks for taking the risk!
I did the same minus installing TWRP Recovery after, as I just want my phone to be stock touchwiz (except for root). But using the N910T root method (CF) Did not produce a successful root, do you think it may have been TWRP that actually made the root work?
DO NOT TRY THIS ROOT!!! THIS DOES NOT WORK!!! This will give you Cache and other problems. I have tried this on 3 T-Mobile Galaxy Edge phones and all of them give the same problem. I had to restore the original firmware on all 3 phones. I also had a friend try this and the same results.
OP, lets see some proof!!!
I think I'll wait for the L update before i root. ***Unless a knowledgeable recognized contributor posts a way*** @Chainfire
anyone else been successful or unsuccessful using this method?, kinda stuck in limbo right now!
I think best bet is to just wait for a 100% method especially on a phone so expensive

I don't really understand what you mean by Cache and other problems. Could you be more specific? I'm not trying to lead anyone afoul, just simply stating I was successful at using the tmobile note root method without any issues.

I get the unable to mount cache in TWRP. The Note 4 root messes with the file system and does something with the TWRP. Can you be more specific on how you install SU in TWRP? When you reboot from TWRP and it asks you to install SU, is that when you install it?

I flashed the super su zip in TWRP.
http://download.chainfire.eu/589/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.16.zip
Like I said, I have been using my phone fine since Saturday without issue but I haven't tried to mount the cache so I can't speak to that.
I think there was a misunderstanding on installing SU. I just tried this: Installed TWRP via download mode. Went into recovery and installed the SU file from the link you provided. I rebooted the phone and updated the SU program in the play store. I also installed Titanium. When I clicked on the SU program, it asked to update binary and I clicked "Normal". It came back with a response of "Installation Failed". When I run Titanium, it says "Asking for root rights...." and a popup came from SU that says it has been granted access. It is stuck on the "Asking for roots rights". I also installed Root Checker and it says I do not have root.
Did you update SU from the play store?

I also tried the new download from chainfire that has our phone on his list now and same results. I don't believe "lreeb1" has root. When I don't update my SU, it shows I have root to various programs, but the programs all say I don''t have root.
Let me see a screenshot of "Rootchecker"???

this would be great...i just got the same phone but on metro pcs...we are trying to get a custom recovery for our g stylo too...although it does seem the metro/tmobile variant of this phone is slightly different spec wise...would that be an issue requiring 2 different ports of twrp?
edit i just found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60913483&postcount=23 and he claims this will install twrp and root the phone...so i was wondering if that file he says to download is ok to use with the metropcs lg g stylo?

SuperR from android forums was helping me and he used the same bump method that he used on the warp sync, but it didn't work sadly
A couple weeks ago i said i rooted my metro lg stylo and the twrp didnt work. Well i decided to do a full unroot until there was more support. Now i came back to the forums, see theres a working twrp and decide to root my phone again, only now it wont root. The one-click root completes and says im rooted but when i use root checker it says NOT rooted. I open supersu and it says no binary installed.
I think maybe my stock recovery got jacked up when i originally rooted. What do you think? Ive completed the one click root at least 8 times. Phone still wont re-root

have you tried using the Metro KDZ file for your phone to go back to complete stock?
No i haven't. If you give me a little direction I will do that. I have to admit, I'm more familiar with fixing/unbricking/flashing back to stock on Samsung phones, with Odin and all. I'm still getting used to LG phones. I'd like to be VERY careful flashing anything on this Stylo. I'm becoming very attached, and $200 for a phone is a bit more than I'm used to spending. I'd hate to brick it.

If you are still om LP 5.0.2 Try using SEND_COMMAND on Download mode to flash TWRP. Im not 100% sure of this process need to be rooted but i dont think so, when TWRP is flash you can flash SU and give it a shot... Im using my phone to post ill send full detail on how to do ot in a bit
I would sincerely appreciate that! As i said before, I'm still unfamiliar with how to flash on LG phones, right down to "how do you boot into download mode?" so detailed instructions would be appreciated.
And really... I appreciate it
(update)
Ok i figured out how to get to download mode, not too difficult. So i figured while i was hooked up to the computer I'd do some tinkering. I'm not android sdk literate so i didnt get far. I do, however, know enough to use some ADB commands and used ADB REBOOT RECOVERY just to see if my gut was right. I cant reboot recovery. I just get a toppled over android and message saying "no command".

Download and install drovers if you haven't done that yet, ill be posting step in a bit just download the files and have them ready.
I am on a metropcs.
I just need good steps on how to properly flash twrp using the send_command in download mode, as you suggested. And i believe my stock recovery is no longer working...
Its for this reason i believe i cant re-root my phone right now. The binary is installed through recovery, correct?

EDIT : Ok this Process to Flash Recovery (TWRP) is just for METRO PCS and T-MOBILE if you are on LP 5.0.2 , DON'T and i REPEAT DON'T try this if you are on Boost and if you have MetroPCS and T-Mobile OTA 5.1.1
ok here is what you can do and i mean @OldAzzNoob to flash TWRP via Download mode (Thank to @Unjustified Dev for this steps that help me out before)
Steps :
1- Go HERE if you haven't and download from Prerequisites step 1 and 2 (LG Root and LG Drivers @Thank you @Unjustified Dev)
"NOTE: skip Drivers if you have them install already"

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2- CLICK HERE and download TWRP 2.8.7.0 @Thank you @Unjustified Dev) once downloaded Decompress on your root directory of the SDCard and rename ir " recovery.img " without "
3- Decompress LG Root on Root C: drive for easy access.
4- Enable USB Debugging via Developer Option.(now ready for a test drive )
5- Open Command Prompt and go to where you Decompress the LG Root zip file (in my case is C:\LG_Root )
and Type
Code:
adb devices
after doing so it will show if your device is attach or not (see image)
NOTE : Don't close this command prompt window
6- Nice! Device been detected and ready for some more fun
7- lets go to Download Mode ( click here if you don't know how to )
8- ok now having the Command Prompt window open lets type and press enter
Code:
ports.bat
it will show the ports our phone is using but we are going to use just 1 and is REG_SZ
9- Now that we know what port we are going to be using lets flash this little fella and i mean TWRP image
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FLASHING RECOVERY VIA DOWNLOAD MODE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1- Now is time to run Send_Command (NOTE : make sure your COM port number is the one YOUR phone is using this varies per device mine is COM9 yours maybe different or not)
1st.
Code:
Send_Command \\.\COM9
after typing that line it will show just # which mean you are doing great, now lets continue.
Code:
dd if=/storage/external_SD/recovery.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery
wait till # show back again after that is finish TWRP should be in place and you are ready to use it
you can just Type LEAVE or pull battery and try manually boot to Custom Recovery.
NOTE : if everything when well i recommend going back to LG_Root using Command Prompt and type ADB DEVICES to check if device is connected after checking that out type ADB REBOOT RECOVERY to boot into recovery just to make sure it flashed correctly.

I just got one today myself! I'll pull a build proper outta mine and I'll talk with a few ppl I know from here and let's see that happens! Heck, puppy is all shiney and I'll sacrifice it. It's just a thing right?
Any progress on this device?
I feel ya, I've had it since February and I'm going nuts not being able to use Titanium backup or any root apps. What makes this phone so different from others that get root.

Bootloader
Well what sucks is I can't seem to boot it to the bootloader. On the other hand the ADB program works it's just when I type adb reboot bootloader it just restarts the phone.
Bounty $25
kingo
so i tried kingo on the computer and it shows root successful. i can run apps that ask for root and appear to work.
but some apps hang when aquiring root, but dont pop up with the normal "no root".
Do you think i should try flashing supersu.zip with flashify and see if it gets permanent "correct" root?
got a expendable z959
i have a phone i dont mind if it happens to brick. so shoot me some ideas on rooting this thing and ill try it
I've tried all I know. Nothing works for me.
im trying now in several ways but im using developer options with OEM Unlock enabled to see if that does anything.
btw i tried the Chinese method and it also said i was rooted but opening flashify said i didnt. See u suppose to give flashify root access. If the Chinese way truly rooted the phone im guessing the Root prompt would appear when u open flashify where you can accept or deny flashify root access, and it doesnt. so im trying other things

Also when rooting with kingo if you go into terminal and type SU it just hangs
UPDATE: i have made a mess and did something to lose root so ill be doing that today.
i have had a successful root using kingo root for pc and android. u have to download SuperUser and move a copy to /system/bin and /system/xbin. Took some playing around but was able to get ROM Manager and BusyBox to fully open without errors about su. I cant recall the exact steps i did but i do know it involved Root Browser, ES File Explorer and Explorer because i had to change permissions for SuperUser in order to move them to the ending destination. Cant remember which one accomplished it. But after getting BusyBox and Rom Manager to startup with no problems i click Fix Permissions in Rom Manager and after it fixed permissions it said to reboot and i lost root at that point. So i am going to tinker with it more and hopefully can get a proper way to do it. U also need Developer Options On with Stay Awake, Enable OEM Unlock and USB Debugging ON and root will always fail if you do not disable you windows firewall.
