Six Guns + Shield - Shield Q&A

Hey sorry if I'm doing this wrong I'm not much of a forum dweller..
I just purchased an nVidia Shield, it has already been upgraded (or downgraded) to 4.4.2. It is not rooted. I really like it so far however I am trying to get Six Guns working, currently with vanilla Play Store it is not available for this device.
I got it working just fine on my rooted Galaxy S3, as well as Battlefield Commander, using the guidance of the XDA thread, market helper and xposed.
I've been searching high and low and all I can find are directions for rooted devices. I am on an extended vacation (will be here for another 3 months) so rooting is not an option unless it can be done without a PC.
I am also not a fan of cracked/blackmarket .apk's. Would anyone be so kind as to point me in the right direction?
Again I apologize if I've missed a thread explaining this, not easy when I don't have a PC in front of me. Cheers!

Shield can be rooted with an apk. Just download and run it.

Yaa? Well that's superb, thank you,, I'm used to doing everything the manual way, are you certain it will work? Has anyone else given it a go?

I used it on my att Galaxy Note 3 and it worked so I tried it on my shield. It takes longer than the 15 secs it says to wait so after pushing the button in the app just let it sit until it reboots. After reboot install the SuperSU in from my thread then run it to update the binaries. You shouldn't have a problem. I was also able to unroot my note 3 easily from within the SuperSU app. Also this method doesn't wipe your data so that's a big plus for me. I've been wanting to root but didn't want to wipe my data.

Awesome I'll definitely give it a try, just sort of waiting for one more person to share their experience with this method.
I was never worried about brick'ing in my s3 as I can easily get that sorted. The Shield is one of those niche products though, I'm not even sure how I could recover it if something went wrong.
Out of curiosity did you update to 4.4.2 or did you stick with 4.3?
Thanks again you've been a great help! E>

I'm on 4.4.2. If your worried about bricking I would start looking at and getting familiar with the restore process just in case, but it pretty straight forward. Go to the ATT Note 3 forum. They've been using this apk to root so you can see if there has been any ill effect of using it. Glad I could help.

I need a reason to do this.

Why should I need to root my phone, I understand about bloatwares from AT&T but need a reason if I root It what will happen? Also once its rooted, will I be able to get update android 2.2? I need a good reason why I should root it. So please help me out with those list of reasons. Thank you.

Seriously, put a little effort into searching this forum. Look at one of the other android forums. If you don't know why you would want to root your phone, then you don't need to do it.
That's the problem, all the search comes out different. That's why I am asking on here cuz nothing comes out right. You don't have to be mean or even post on here if You didn't like to hear it. I just want the real opinion and all those opinions will summerize.

Here's the things I've done since I rooted:
To get rid of the ATT apps (this one is important because they launch for no reason).
To sideload apps right from the phone.
To change the appearance.
To really "own" my phone.
I really don't know beyond that. I guess if you're fine without rooting it then don't. I used it happily for 2 weeks without root, but I couldnt stand the invasive launching ATT bloat.
What about the update, if its rooted, can I still get in air update?

Official Huawei Ascend Thread

I thought I would go ahead and make a general thread for the Cricket Huawei Ascend until something more concrete comes along. My apologies to the Mods if the word “Official " is not approved. I just want a section where people can post anything and everything about thier Android Ascends since, well, as we all know, XDA rocks and people are more inclined to look here first then any other development website!
So, post up folks! There are a few of us who have these phones and are pretty well versed when it comes to the ins and outs! I will post up some small write ups and what you can do to get a little extra bang for the buck in the speed department of things and I am sure a lot of others have valuable and up to date information!
I’ll start by posting what I have said about this phone in another thread.
Rooting this phone and removing some of the pre-installed apps and files is a must.
z4 root works great with this phone. Nothing towards Superoneclick but lets face it, its way to complicated for the average user and even then, it's hard to get working. z4 root is a total win in this case, I have managed to delete half the junk the phone came with and have noticed a slight performance boost although it's not much to brag about with a 600Mhz processor. A custom kernel is almost a must as well. I can not play non market games, it's slow if you try to multitask and is all around slow coming from an expert Droid user.
Lastly, the Swipe keyboard. Who ever would want to use that! What a slow nightmare it is to try to type with Swipe in my opinion, I deleted it. The stock keyboard is not much better. Get " Better Keyboard ", it's not nearly as laggy and it can actually keep up with fast texting.
BUT, there is a bright side to all the cons ( almost all the cons )
Rooting, deleting junk and downloading Better Keyboard makes this phone an awesome entry level phone that can hold it's own with the mid range phones. It's no Evo by any means, but, it's a step closer to becoming an affordable real “smart phone ".
The ability to overclock would make it 100% indeed a smart phone and more then capable of holding it's own vs. $300+ phones. It's a project phone, you get what you pay for but, if you have a little time and patience, you too can own a get Android device with no contract, low monthly payments and hours of entertainment from the Android platform. I, am sold on this phone. I have owned other Android type phones and I can honestly say, this phone can be some competition.
Sure it has a poor quality LCD screen and can be buggy out of the box, but like I said, a little patience and determination is what makes this phone enjoyable. And, after all, it's not like it needs constant maintenance. Just a few steps to take out of the box and your set. For $150, I can't complain now that my phone is working like an Android phone should work.
Phone runs a lot smoother without all the provider apps.

I'll let you know, I'm almost finished with the theme, I just need to make the text readable in a couple of places, namely the system clock and the menus that pop up when you press the menu button...
ALSO I wanted to remind everyone, if you haven't done so already, "everyone should request support for the Ascend for the clockworkmod rom manager, that would be the real first step to getting some real modding done on the Ascend, I nearly bricked my phone a few times working on that theme, I had to reflash my phone back to stock 3 times.... which really sucks. Contact page is here for clockworkmod http://www.clockworkmod.com/contact and here is the contact email address [email protected]"
With the clockwork mod it would be very trivial to experiment with the phone, because if you/I mess up the phone wouldn't need to be flashed back to factory just flashed back to just before it was messed up, which would be awesome....

As for clockworkmod i don't think koush will consider it... :-\ because i been trying to contact him for the past two months and no answer... he even came out with a guide to do it ourselves or to send him one of our androids for a built. I mean i could understand the guy he must have other important matters to attend to but if he want it to he can make it in two days with his kind of expertise. I think were gonna have to port ourselves a flash recovery and sent it to him so he can make it official.

Those instructions aren't very detailed, they seem to assume that you've done an android build before...
He says he will do it if we loan him a phone, but I can't be without my phone for a week. The Ascend is cheap enough($109.99 on crickets website, it may have to be activated to get that price, but it's $150 in stores), I propose that we all donate a bit of money and purchase one to send to koush, the clockwork dude. It wouldn't take many people to donate for us to be able to do this...
I setup a paypal button for it
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=ASD4X4W4ANV3Q
As far as when he is done with the phone, I'm up for suggestions as far as what to do with it, we could sell it and then return as much money as possible back to the donors... However if I had an extra device to mess around with I would definitely use it to learn how to make custom roms, I would use it to try to port 2.3 over to our phone. Other than that I'm up for ideas...
We have an opportunity here to make some great things happen with our phone, let us not forsake this moment!!!!
If you think this is a good idea, either link back to this post or post the paypal link with the explanation to other Ascend forums or threads...
I'm down to donate $30... I will keep everyone updated as far as how much money gets donated...

[Q] ASUS TF300 Poor Performance Help!

All,
I have drafted this post hoping after reading that someone will have some concrete resolve to improving the performance of my tablet.
Background: I purchased two Asus TF300T's for my wife and I at Christmas looking to improving our mobility around the home and externally without lagging a lap top. I read plenty of reviews over a period of 1-2 years and settled on the Asus. Since Christmas we have had one firmware update. We are on Android version 4.1.1, Build# 10.4.2.18.
Current: We are highly disappointed with its ability to swiftly move through websites. I have taken off java script then rechecked it and the performance is very inconsistent at best to include on my home wifi. Downloading pdf files from some sights is nearly impossible. I can't find how to down load apps and other documents to my SD Card. The tablet memory is constantly at least 50% occupied with stuff i am not aware of. the best thing i can use this for is my email and a few other simple apps. No crashes just extremely poor performance. If I want to view an item on You tube, man it takes forever or it never loads.
At this point I am somewhat in remorse beliving I would have been better off buying cheap laptops.
Can anyone of experience please assist with helping me maximize the tablets and see the power and functionality I have read about?
I am not a software developer and have read about rooting yet I am not clear on how and what to do yet i do understands it voids your warranty.
thanks for your assistance,
Frustrated Asus TF300 users
To unlock your tablets potential, I highly recommend rooting and installing a stock based or custom ROM. I would also install a custom kernel. It will void your warranty but in my opinion, it was well worth it. Rooting only voids the software, not the hardware.
Here is the video I watched in order to learn how to unlock and flash a recovery using Fastboot. This video shows you how to flash CWM recovery. Many have had issues with CWM, including me, so I flashed TWRP recovery instead. I just substituted the TWRP info in place of CWM recovery. The second link I provide will be for TWRP. Also, this video shows you how to root your tablet. No sense in doing that if you are going to flash a rooted ROM. There are quite a few rooted stock based and custom ROMs available to us. I would go ahead and read up on them and choose one before starting the process.

This is a link to the ROM I'm running.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971806
It also has a modified kernel in the 3rd post down under extras which will allow the tablet to be overclocked to 1.7GHz.. The only issue with it is GPS. It has to be reactivated after each boot if you need to use it. As I mentioned above, there are quite a few ROMs available to us. I would just read through and choose the one that's right for you.

same poor performance
Hi, i too feel my Tf300 is very poorly performing. Glitches, stutters and apps closing down quite often. This is on 4.1.1 in UK and I have made no changes other than android updates.
I would love to have this thing run more smoothly like my GNex which is only dual core but cant see it happening.
Most of all i want to get a controller working to play Dead Trigger and ShadowGun.
Most tutorials for controllers say must be rooted. I would therefore like to root the TF300.
I have looked at doing it a few time but have seen warnings about not rooting if you have a particular version.
Is there a list or guide where i may look up the specifics of my TF300 and then know which root method to use for the best?
I dont have my TF300 handy but know its on 4.1.1 at minute and is a UK tablet.
any help appreciated.

So do i have to root if i want a controller working with the likes of dead trigger and shadow gun?
Also and when a new version JB or even key lime comes along will i be able to get the official version back on to tablet?
It should be possible to get the official version back on although I'm not sure on how to do that other than doing a full backup in CWM/TWRP before changing ROMs.
It depends what controller you want to connect to your device. I can connect an Xbox wireless controller to my tablet and I'm not rooted. I'm not sure on Dualshock3 controllers but I think it might be possible without root but I don't know

its the xbox360 wireless i want to connect.
I bought the usb dongle, plug it into the dock and it does some basic functions but does not work in dead trigger or shadowgun correctly.
I try to re assign functions in game but in dead trigger for example the view just spins around constantly.

thats strange as when i try shadowgun i cant get the left joystick to rotate the correct way making it unplayable.
did you do anything special?
I had the same problem as you on the original shadowgun but on the multiplayer version (Deadzones), i did manage to get it to work. I don't think this can be fixed by rooting or something so it might be worth contacting MadFinger with regards to the problems of using a wireless Xbox 360 controller on their games
asus is trash some people just get fooled by the brand
I think Shadowgun has been updated as it now works with controller great.
The downside now is that it crashes every 10 minutes.
Asus as a brand I am unsure about to be honest.
I originally ordered the TF700 through Amazon. I sent it back along with its replacement due to poor build quality. The screen was not fixed down evenly and creaked.
I decided not to chance the TF700 again and bought the TF300 from Argos, I had to change this three times before I got one that worked or had not manufacturing problems.
Now the tablet runs but for a quad core its glitchy as hell.
Simple internet browsing always comes up with a crash, most games are glitchy and crash very often.
might check to see what i can get for it second had as its mint with box and all original stuff and only 2 months old.
£400 with dock did see a bargain.
I am thinking that perhaps all android tablets run equally as bad?
i bought this coz i am always sitting browsing internet, playing odd game on my Gnex, i know find that i would rather pick up my phone as the experience is so much smother and glitch free than the tablet. That makes it kinda redundant.
Every android tablet is not as bad as the transformer. The transformer line of tablets have slow I/O issues. Installing a custom ROM should improve the experience

Thanks yet more questions
Thanks for your assistance. I know I successfully rooted my tablet as it tells me that in the upper right hand corner. I used CMW instead of TWRP yet really know issues with that yet.
I am unable to find the system files via es file manager and I am unable to find the root - sign or the build.prop files which i believe I am supposed to have. I have loaded super user yet i am not sure the purpose of that download as i never see it used unless it is a system app.
I don't have a ROM like, Clean Rom yet and truly need further assistanc to set up my system. As you can tell I am not a developer yet I experienced a lot of frustration with slow performance.
What I would like to have is the ability to turn up the clock speed, not have the system continually looking for wifi and to know what files i can delete off my system and which ones I shouldn't. If I could have the system just open up straight to my system opposed to the Asus opening load that would be great as well.
I have a quite abit to load yet if I could get a good step by step instructions of what to load I believe I can follow it as I did get the system rooted. Looking for a patient developer to work me through some customization of my Asus TF300T.

For those who have sent me links and words of wisdom as I voiced some frustration due to ignorance thanks. I found XDA University and learned how to flash ROM and Kernels. I was able to finally understand how to load the zip files from my computer onto the tablet and then access them through Clockmod. It was easy. Unfortunately I have this bug to fix yet after that I believe if I can find the right ROMs, Kernels and apps to enhance my tablet experience I will be happy.
Any idea ho to fix the banner described above?

okay, I just bought this phone 2 days ago. really different from a windows phone. im getting use to it... but, ive been doing research on here on how to root it. after an hour I found one. much help is really appreciated! (im gonna sound really noobish when I say this)
how can you tell if your usb debugging is on, on your phone?
I literally went through every options on settings, looking through the booklet and nothing.
if its possible id like to root it without hooking it up to a computer?
I use to have older droids, and I could download apps and root it on the phone those were the days :good::good:
ROMS
I tried to rom a ascend y straight talk phone it ended up broke. I tried it with 3 different ascend y phones. any guide for that for the s3 or with my experience just leave it alone and don't touch it?
the keyboard
is it just me or is the keyboard slow when you type for texting? it cant keep up with me....all my other phones could and the Ram memory is very low too....it very's from 300MB-450MB out of 1.5GB.
is their a good way to make my signal stronger?
I live out in the boonies and every network I have had...it got great signal except Verizon...the most I get is 2 bars mostly just 1 very annoying....(when I had the ascend Y Verizon phone I found a way to boost my signal and I literally got 3-4 bars out where I lived until I tried to flash it with a rom "oopps my bad")

I don't know if its locked or unlocked (bootloader)
Checking if USB Debugging is available is just a matter of going to Settings > Developer Options and then looking for a tick mark checked near the option that reads "USB Debugging."
Unfortunately, I cannot speak for root on the Straighttalk SIII being as that I do not own the device (rather I own the Verizon variant). However, a quick forum search might turn up some results...
EDIT: It appears that there is something called "Cydia Impactor" that takes advantage of a couple bugs found in previous versions of android. Note: Do install a superuser manager on your device right after obtaining root (assuming you gain it) as you don't want everything to have root access!
As for ROMs, what I stated above holds true for these as well. In theory, with an unlocked bootloader (if you have one), then flashing roms is only a matter of checking compatibility with your phone. But I'll save the details about that for now...
The stock keyboard didn't work out for me either. However on Google Play, you can download more keyboards that may prove to be more convenient for you!
As for signal strength, I am currently unaware of any way to actually boost it... However, I do agree that the signal strength I get on my SIII is slightly weaker compared some of the other phones on the market out there, but with a call to Verizon, you may be able to get a signal booster.
Hope that helps

Checking if USB Debugging is available is just a matter of going to Settings > Developer Options and then looking for a tick mark checked near the option that reads "USB Debugging."
Unfortunately, I cannot speak for root on the Straighttalk SIII being as that I do not own the device (rather I own the Verizon variant). However, a quick forum search might turn up some results...

okay, I found the debugging check mark .-. thanks
I have looked but, most of them are not the same model. I wanna be safe than sorry besides ive looked at 2-5 forums and they had to be plugged up to a computer. id rather have a simple root in area.
about the bootloader how can I tell if its locked or unlocked? if its locked how can I unlock it?
im not using the stock keyboard. ive downloaded 4 keyboards and they are the same as the original keyboard....its either im typing to fast or the phone dislikes me in every way.
funny story.....
Last night it was storming in st.louis large hail, heavy rain, thunder and lighting etc....well I was having a deep conversation with someone and the power was off/my battery only had 30% left and the last thing she said was "I don't want you to go " then I tried sending a kik message back and it wouldn't send or anything....I tried calling someone and hears what the guy said auto message "your phone as been deactivated" I was like "WEEEEELL aint this funny and very convenient" so I was gonna go to walmart then it started hailing again and I got pelted by penny sized hail...dude they may seem small but they hurt like heck! :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Do NOT try to unlock your phone as it WILL hard brick! I am saying this from personal experience. You will have to spend $50 for a JTAG repair.

Hmm, upon some searching, I found something called "Framaroot" that one can install on a phone (it's an app) in hopes of achieving root access. It supposedly executes various exploits to get SuperSu and the su binary loaded. Anyways, while our S3s are not exactly listed as compatible, the author does mention that if the phone share a similar processor, it may be compatible.

For rooting the sch-s968c samsung galaxy s3 from straight talk, and everything on roms this is the link you want. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516498
Cydiaimpactor method does work. that is how I rooted mine. Works great. I haven't played with roms yet because I have not found the need. But these guys over at that link are playing around finding out what works and what does not.
As far as rooting without the computer I have not seen a way yet. But the cydiaimpactor method takes 4 to 5 seconds, and is very very simple.
There is not a lot more info I can give you because there is not a lot of info in the rooting world about the sch-s968c. If you find anything please share!

He doesn't have access to a computer so he is trying to find a way to root using a apk
Sent from my SCH-S968C using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hope ya get it rooted. You could try poot also.. Need no computer and it claims to root all/most QualCom devices. Just know that anything could happen while modding the phone and if stuff were to go down it would take a computer to recover if you did hit worse case.
Impactor is by far the quickest easiest way if you know what you are doing and have access to a PC. However if no access to PC try framaroot as suggested. Go to the framaroot thread here on xda and look for the download link in first post. If you read the first post it tells you the newest version out, always read first instead of expecting to be spoonfed or just jumping in this unprepared. Install the app on your phone and run it. If it fails then you need to find a computer to use Impactor
Hope this helps!

Hacked....my phones are all rooted & busybox...

I'm in desperate need of help and this forum was recommended. Im a nurse, not a techie so bare with me. Going on almost 1 yr of every device, every acct...my whole life hacked. Its a very long story but somehow all my devices end up rooted with Busy Box installed. I never even knew what either meant. So, the 1st time Verizon thought i did it by mistake. 6 phones later...Im a genius, a special kind of stupid...or someone clearly hates me and is determined to make me lose my mind. HELP!!!!

And what's the question?
The question is, how is someone doing this to my phones. I have seen plenty of posts where people are inquring how to root and install busybox. So the likelyhood of someone like me "accidentally" doing this to one phone is pretty much impossible. But 6??? I downloaded the busybox installer. Chose the option to remove it from my system. Factory reset. Downloaded the app again. It still says im rooted and still have busybox installed. I changed phones, carriers, phone numbers. Nothing works.

There is just 2 possible solutions:
1) Someone has physical access to your phones and like to play with them
2) You're buying already rooted phones

Thats tech-support here - PI next door.
You may be installing software that can root the phone without you knowing, or maybe buying rooted phones. Leave the BusyBox Installer uninstalled. It may somehow be rooting you. Install security software on your phone and it will usually tell you about root. And when getting a new phone, only download apps from the Google Play Store, and nowhere else. Any shady apps should be avoided on the Play Store.

There are a couple of other options you need to look into. Once someone have compromised your gmail (or any other email) accounts you're using with your phone, there is really no telling what they can install remotely. However, the few most important aspects are:
Don't ever buy a used or opened-box phone from some "friendly guy who has one too many".
Don't ever let your phone out of sight, where you cannot be sure nobody can touch it.
Don't ever let some un-professional service center handle your phone, especially after you've already been there.
Also, it is clear from your picture that you seem to be a rather attractive woman. This is also a disadvantage, since unfortunately there are a lot of creepy guys out there, with nothing better to do that to try to get some sneak shots and personal info from tech-innocent nurses. I advice you to find a hacker girlfriend to help you find out who's spying on you.
Good luck!
