Soft keys build prop edit - Verizon Galaxy S 5 General

Just an FYI that the build prop edit "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" works to enable the soft keys for anyone interested.

Not to be that guy who's new. But what are soft keys?

Basically the on-screen keys like you'll find on Nexus devices. I personally like them, but they're not for everyone.

And how does one make this change?

Ok I get it..can you auto hide this with build prop edit ? I mean I can do it with exposed but installing expose module right now is making my device laggy

Make the change in the OP in the build.prop files using a text editor on the device.

This worked fine and I was able to turn off the lights on the capacitive keys. Is there a way to disable the capacitive keys?

does anyone know how to make the left hard key menu and long press for open apps? (Swap its default setup)

Nvm figured it out.
If you're rooted:
Go to system > usr > keylayout, and open generic.kl with a text editor, find keys 158 and 254 and put a "#" sign in front of both. Save the file and reboot phone. Then go to settings and disable the light.

Hey I have been looking around/edited some files in /system/use/keylayout but have not had any luck so far.
I am trying to switch the function of the soft keys. I want a single press to be the "menu" key like it always was and make the long press be the apo switcher. I found App_switch and Menu assigned to button numbers and switched them but all it did was disbale to button. If you have any ideas please respond in here or PM me. I plan to make a guise with pictures etc once I figure it out. Thanks

Yeah, I've never really altered the softkeys through build prop edits. I know there are some Xposed modules to alter the softkeys. Might want to check that out.

Put a # in front of keys 158 and 254 once you enable soft keys, This compltely disables the back button and recent buttons at the bottom of the phone. I also disabled the lights for them in settings too.
To enable soft keys you have to type in that line the OP listed at the bottom of the text file.
(You can actually type it anywhere as long as it's on a new line and doesn't have a # in front of it)
Here's my new screen.

Yeah I was using that on my M8. I just haven't installed Xposed yet. I'm kind of waiting for SafeStrap so I can make a nice Nandroid without too much crap haha.
Edit: Oh yeah I changed my DPI to 460 and it helped with the overlap in the camera app and others.

[MOD] Alternate wake buttons and dedicated camera button*Final*

You can use use root explorer or any other similar program. (If using root explorer u have to toggle the r/w in the upper right to edit anything u need root access to do)
In your file browser navigate to system/usr/keylayout and select s3c-keylayout.kl file and open in a text editor or in file manager text editor.
Dedicated camera button for opening and usage.
Find the "key 217 SEARCH" line.Delete SEARCH and replace it with CAMERA in caps. (This will work fine with alternate wake)
This will open the camera and when clicked in the camera app take a pic or start/stop the video recording.
Alternate wake buttons.
After the BACK and SEARCH (or CAMERA if you changed it to that) entry type in capital letter with underscore "WAKE_DROPPED".Then save it and reboot. Now the "search" then "back" combo key will wake phone from sleep to the lockscreen every single time for a week or two that I have been trying it.
Enjoy.

Be careful during your edit. If something goes wrong, your buttons may end up disabled and you won't be able to edit the file again to fix your mistakes.
I had to use ADB to fix and restore my file.

If you're using root explore, when you got to the folder, on the top tab R/W button. This grant read/write access, the press and hold down the file with your finger then choose Open text editor, once done you should able to save it. Your phone must be rooted in order to do this.

[MOD] how to get the galaxy nexus navigation bar on cm10

I did a little hunting for this mod and to enable it you must goto the /system/build.prop file to enable it
Mount it as r/w if you have root explorer
Enter this text in the build prop file
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
Save and exit
Reboot and enjoy

Open up the file labled "build prop". Make sure you have root priveledges, and add this text to the bottom of the file:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
Save the file, and restart your phone. You will now have the new dock bar.
This worked on my Sprint S3 running the latest cm10. However, I had to go to Developer Options and check "Disable HW overlays" to keep the screen from flickering.

[GUIDE] How to easily re-map your search key to function as a multitasking key

For a lot of people, the search key is pretty useless. Why not re-map it and turn it into a multitasking button similar to what the galaxy nexus has? All you have to do is edit a couple files in your /system.
EDIT: You can actually just flash a zip, thanks twitchyeye for letting me know about it
Flash this modified zip in cwm or twrp that twitchyeye made to remap: http://www.mediafire.com/?jk3gbeuy8312bn8
What you will need:
-A SGS4G currently on an ICS rom
-ES File explorer (free from the market)
Download ES file explorer if you haven't already
Open the app, go to menu -> settings then turn on Root Explorer, Up to Root, and Mount File System
Go back
Touch the "up" button (you should be in the "/" directory)
Scroll down to the "system" folder
Scroll down to the "usr" folder
Go to the "keylayout" folder
Long-press cypress-touchkey.kl and press edit
Change SEARCH to APP_SWITCH (you must type it exactly like that)
It should look like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Do the same thing to melfas_touchkey.kl
Reboot the phone
The serach key should now function as the multitasking button. If not, you might have to edit the few more .kl files in /system/usr/keylayout
Es file explorer automatically makes backups of system apps that you edit (make sure you have the option checked under root settings)If you ever want to go back to your old setup, you simply delete the .kl files you edited and rename the copys to remove the .bak at the end of the file name. Or can simply replace the APP_SWITCH with SEARCH again.
Note to Miui users:since miui uses a different recent apps menu, the search key will only bring up a gingerbread-style recent apps
This is even easier.

Ive never tried a multi-task remap. I just had to use that for a while on a old phone. They make two models of the phone only difference was home and back were swapped.
It is a very dated app so maybe you could improve it by recoding to allow multi-task mapping? I just figured its less likely of messing something up with it then modifying the key_map file.

I took that and stuck the melfas_touchkey.kl in it. It might not work otherwise. You would still have to edit that one.

No, as far as I know the app is merely cosmetic. Actual navbar function edits can be done per custom ROM or through some xposed modules depending on what ROM you are running.

Like mentiond above, easiest way is to press home button and power button simultaneously. You have to press and hold them at the same to to make it work. If you first press the home button and half a second later the power button, then it won't work. The swipe-to-screenshot gesture is more difficult to use for me as I sometimes need a second attempt to make the screenshot.
How to take a screenshot on the Samsung Galaxy S7
If you're rooted it would be readily available when you long press the power button. A window will pop up giving you one of many options and one of them is a screenshot command. Which will exit out the window and take a screen shot of your current screen. Pretty damn useful.

If you're rooted it would be readily available when you long press the power button. A window will pop up giving you one of many options and one of them is a screenshot command. Which will exit out the window and take a screen shot of your current screen. Pretty damn useful.

what would suddenly change if the phone is rooted? would I have to install some xposed mod or something? I'm just trying to take one handed screenshots like I'm used to. this two handed bs is very annoying

there are apps like "all in one gesture", where you can define a hotkey and add an action like screenshot..
e.g. I use longpress home for screenshot

Depending which ROM you decided to install you'll get the options built in. If you decided to go with a plain root yes xposed will help.

You are welcome! I also love it.
Even nicer is double tap status bar for screen off! This won't cripple smart lock also...

yea man it has some great features for sure. I like your wu reference btw.
3 finger swipe for Nougat screen shot is idiotic
The 3 finger down swipe, in addition to needing two hands and 3 fingers, usually scrolls down whatever screen you're on before the image is captured. Was very annoyed until I found that screen shot could still be added to the power button options. I stand corrected.
