[Q] Nexus 5 Cyanogenmod M7 stable Profile 2g/3g LTE profile question. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First time caller, long time listener. I'm on the most recent stable Cyanogenmod build, and I have a question, I've tried searching the forums and google but not sure I'm describing the issue correctly.
I am using profiles, 2 separate ones, one for home, one for when I leave home (lose wifi connectivity.) Inside I have the phone data off, and only wifi on, and then when I leave I have that profile set to turn data on, and it seems that I've figured everything out except for that when I leave LTE is not enabled and I cannot find an option where to have that automatically enabled. I get data, but only 3G HSPA+. Yes, I have LTE in my area, and I can manually enable it, but cannot figure out where to set it to automatically enable.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I don't think you can enable LTE in CM profiles. Pretty sure LTE is a separate toggle that you might as well leave on?

Thank you for your response. Not to sound dumb, but how do I go about leaving it on? Inside my home I don't actually receive LTE coverage, but I do the second I walk outside the door. However with the profiles as they are, when I walk out the door it just stays on 3G/HSPA, unless I actually push the LTE button from the notification bar menu to enable it. Any ideas how to just have it always stay on?

LTE button as in LTE in your quick settings? I never had to manually enable LTE when I had coverage again, which makes it weird for you. Are you "enforcing" "2G/3G" in your profiles?

I've tried it with both 2G/3G checked, and unchecked in the profiles. However each time I have to actually manually turn it on for it to work, when I go outside it's just 3G/HSPA+, I then turn it on, but when I come back inside it goes off (since I don't get LTE inside), but never comes on when I leave again.
If that makes any sense.

Yes it is, when I'm outside, after I enable the LTE through the quick settings. Oddly though that changes automatically back to 3G when I come inside, yet doesn't automatically change back to 4G/LTE automatically when I go outside.

Weird. When I lose 4G/LTE coverage it doesn't change my settings to 3G, it keeps LTE on but connects on 3G/HSPA. What happens if you turn LTE on while you're inside?

I found this through google that seems quite similar to what I'm asking (they wont let me post a link) but a google search of
"cyanogenmod profile 2g/3g LTE"
the 1st couple result shows something at cyanogenmod site is that a bug report or something they are aware of?

Even if I turn it on while inside, for a second it changes my preferred data to LTE, but then after a few seconds of not finding signal goes off and switches back to 3G.
I was primarily trying to use the profiles to turn off mobile data altogether indoors and then on once it loses wifi, but even if I try to leave it on indoors, it doesn't re-enable LTE when I go outside. At least not when I have profiles setup. When I wasn't using profiles it would actually.

Try enforcing "Mobile Data" in your profile that you use for outside, or is it already like that?

Mobile Data is enforced for my outside profile, but not the inside one (typically) Though even when I have it enabled on the inside one and turn LTE on manually, it still goes off and changes back to default Preferred Network Type 3G after a few seconds.

It changes to 3G here?:

Ugh, 5 minutes between posts for being new....
Yes sir (or ma'am) that's exactly where it changes, but ONLY when profiles are on. Not when they are off, then it is on LTE and stays on LTE at all times leaving me to in a sense blame profiles...or my configuration of them, though I think it has to do with not having that 4g option under 2g/3g. I'm not positive.

New member struggles.. Somehow I got caught with this:
I'm not entirely sure as I never enforced anything related to data/WiFi in my profiles, only things like volumes and ring mode. I always manually turned Mobile Data on and off manually, and the bug report for CM in the Google search doesn't mention it forcing you to 3G even when not enforcing it on in Profiles, it only mentions the lack of LTE as an option.
We can probably rule out the issue being cause by enabling Profiles, it's probably somehow related to your Profile configurations.

I just tried enforcing Mobile Data in a profile and it didn't work at all.. I don't know, maybe we have to see if other people have the same issue. Maybe wait for someone else to reply, could just be ROM-specific, carrier specific or somehow device-specific.
Edit: Well that was an easy fix. It's fine, it happens sometimes, wasn't a waste of time at all.

Yeah everything seems fine with 2g/3g off in both profiles. I think I thought that you needed 2g/3g enabled to receive calls indoors which is probably why I turned it on. So frustrating I wasted hours looking up a solution to a PEBKAC issue. Feel dumb for missing that.

[APP][2.0+] Toggle2G (Tasker/LTE/Rootless) [v0.3.5 / 1/13/2013]

I've made a java application to take "any" flashable ROM zip and resign the zip and inject Toggle2G into it. Check the downloads for ResignUpdate.zip. Check the readme-first.txt in the zip for more information. Works with Windows/OSX/Linux with java installed
Here is a little app I've started working on that enables the 2G Only setting automatically when the phone is asleep to save battery.
As always with these kinds of things, I am not responsible if something goes wrong, so use at your own risk.
Working on Android versions since 2.1. I'm using it on my Nexus 4.
Installation:
The flashable Toggle2G-Update.zip is designed to work with CyanogenMod based ROMs. There is no need to resign any CyanogenMod ROMs.
The easiest way to see if Toggle2G works on your ROM is flash the Toggle2G-Update.zip from the recovery. If your ROM is compatible, Toggle2G will show up in your app drawer.
ONLY IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, then you can try the ResignUpdate java application to convert your ROM. ROMs must be in zip form and be flashable through a recovery like CWM or TWRP. Download the ResignUpdate.zip and read the included readme-first.txt file. Once you resigned your ROM, you then wipe and flash the resigned ROM.
See the troubleshooting section below if you have trouble.
ResignUpdate Change Log:
v3.0.1 - Don't close out of the GUI on certain errors
v3.0.0 - Automatic SecPhone.apk and SecSettings.apk detection | Running ResignUpdate.bat/sh without any parameters pops up a GUI so you can pick the ROM.zip file (Should help with path issues). You can still use the command line options if you want and it will bypass the GUI.
v2.1.3 - Update Toggle2G.apk to v0.2.0.
v2.1.2 - Overrides ROM's Toggle2G.apk when injecting.
v2.1.1 - Bug fix during Toggle2G.apk injection.
v2.1.0 - ZipAlign resigned files.
v2.0.4 - It seems keys need to be physical files..fixed
v2.0.3 - Don't fail on unreadable apks. Sign resigned zip. Move injection files into ResignUpdate.jar so no path issues.
v2.0.2 - Better detection of RSA file in an APK. Some additional optional parameters to help with any fringe cases that might come up
v2.0.1 - Don't change apk's storage method when processing it
v2.0.0 - Initial Release
Toggle 2G Change Log:
Always reboot after an update!
v0.3.5 Added option to always switch to 3G. This is if you want 3G except when on wifi or data off or low battery. / Fixed Spanish translation crashing Toggle 2G. / Start to refer to networks as fast/slow. This is because users might want to toggle from LTE to 3G.
v0.3.4 Fixed bug that was switching back to 3G
v0.3.3 Enable data in auto swich mode will reactive 3G
v0.3.2 Fix retry of network change when data off setting is used
v0.3.1 Fix bug when toggling data that was preventing the Manual Notifications from working.
v0.3.0 Added LTE networks and removed the need for ROOT (You will need to re-setup Toggle2G after upgrade)
v0.2.4 New icons from LeopardSurd. Show version number at top of Toggle 2G settings screen.
v0.2.3 Try for 5 seconds to get network to switch after data turning off data. I hope this helps with switching on phone like the Galaxy S II; German translation thanks to Aiakio; Italian translation thanks to krinet
v0.2.2 Fixed bug where sometimes network would switch to the same network causing data to disable then enable
v0.2.1 Fix some issues with not switching.
v0.2.0 Option to wait for phone unlock before switching to 3G; Option to turn data off to switch networks; Option to switch to 2g when data is off; French translation thanks to mooondark
v0.0.20 Set SDK to v8 to fix compatibility with CM6
v0.0.19 Updated German using the translation from Aiakio.
v0.0.18 Added translations by muchopoli83. (Danish, German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Chinese)
v0.0.17 Tweaked chmod on preferences folder
v0.0.16 Switch to 2g when data is disabled. Better fix for bug where settings are not surviving a reboot.
v0.0.15 Fix bug where settings are not surviving a reboot (I hope). New icon from hawkeyexp, thanks!v0.0.14 2G when sleep on/off option, 2G Notification fixes/options, Options reworked
v0.0.13 Option to not switch to 2G if network is being used. Default threshold of 2 KBps means 2G will not enable if >= 2 KBps is being used. Threshold is configurable in settings
v0.0.12 You can pick a specific network through the Tasker/Local plug-in (not just 2G or 3G) / Battery feature can be turned off / Disable options only applicable to auto manage when its off
v0.0.11 Delay switching to 2G when wifi is turned on to prevent network outage during transition. Also added option to off the feature that switches to 2G when using wifi.
v0.0.10 Fix bug that was not changing auto manage
v0.0.8 Customizable network selections for 2G and 3G modes.
v0.0.7 Added home widget. The Toggle 2G plug-in app is needed to use the widget.
v0.0.6 Option to allow user to choose when to switch back to 3G using the notification bar. Requires a separate plug-in app attached here or from the market
v0.0.5 more fixes to try and prevent switching when phone rings and phone wakes up
v0.0.3 fix issues with disconnecting incoming call
v0.0.2 adds Tasker/Locale plugin support!
Automatic Mode Features:
Switch to 2G when wifi is connected.
Switch to 2G when data is turned off.
If screen is off for more that 10 minutes (configurable in the app) it will switch to 2G
If screen is off and battery is below 30% (configurable in the app) it will switch to 2G
Network usage monitoring to prevent switching to 2G if network is being used.
3G can be re-enabled as soon as the screen is turned on or unlocked or it can be done manually
Option to Disable data before switching network. (Required on some phones/ROMs)
Option for manual switching back to 3G. This setting allows user to choose when to switch back to 3G by selecting a notification in the notification bar. Requires separate app located on market or use link below
Notes:
Runs in the com.android.phone process to gain access to the 2G Only setting.
Shares process with system so installing will list pretty much all of the permissions
Uses root access to save preferences, seems running in the com.android.phone process can causes some problems with creating a preferences folder to hold the preferences file. Root access is needed to save preferences. I have a new system for saving preferences that does not need root. However, as a backup, if Toggle2G fails to use the new system it will fall back to this old system and use Root, (I didn't want to break it for phones I can't test on)
Does not change network while in a call. Otherwise the call will drop because the radio resets. (Even if Tasker/Locale tells it to)
Changing network can be slow. You may have to wait a second for 3G to reactivate. I suggest using the manual switch to 3G option and plugin if this is the case.
Due to issues with how Toggle 2G uses a shared user id, I've implemented the notifications and home widget under a separate app.
3 settings for the Tasker/Locale plugin and home screen widget. Automatic, 2G , or 3G (Setting 2G or 3G disables auto mode)
ToDo:
Don't switch to 2g while tethering
disable the 3g when the reception is between ___ and ___ to keep it from flip-flopping. (Can't be done, you can't monitor 3G reception levels while in 2G)
Use g sensors to detect movement and reactivate 3G to lower radio down time after unlocking phone (Monitoring these sensors would drain battery and defeat the purpose)
If you think of a feature or find a bug, let me know.
Also, I've attached a values.zip file so that everyone can contribute to translating Toggle2G to other languages.
I'm a code junkie, please support my habit

TROUBLESHOOTING
* Make sure you have Java 6 or higher installed
* I get an "Failed to find any apk with a key" error when signing my ROM
If you get this error it means that ResignUpdate tool could not find one of these files in the ROM's zip file:
system/app/phone.apk
system/app/settings.apk
system/app/SecPhone.apk
system/app/SecSettings.apk
At lease one of these files is needed to identify what in the ROM needs to be resigned. You can open the ROM's zip file and try and find where one of these files are. If you find it in a folder other than system/app you can specify one of these files in the -keyapk parameter when running ResignRom. For example, if you find that the SecPhone.apk is actually in the preload/symlink/system/app folder, then put preload/symlink/system/app/SecPhone.apk in the -keyapk parameter.

OK, so here is a little app I've started working on that enables the 2G Only setting automatically when the phone is asleep to save battery. It's not polished at this point, just trying out the features and come up with more to add.
** REQUIRES CyanogenMod 6 **
Notes:
Signed using the CM6 platform.x509.pem so not sure what other ROMs it will work with.
Runs in the com.android.phone process to gain access to the 2G Only setting.
Uses root access to save preferences, seems running in the com.android.phone process can causes some problems with creating a preferences folder to hold the preferences file. Root access does a mkdir to make the preferences folder and that is all.
Does not change the 2G Only flag while in a call. Otherwise the call will drop because the radio resets
Changing the 2G Only flag can be slow. You may have to wait a second for 3G when turning the screen on after it has switched to 2G while the phone was asleep
Features:
It doesn't bother switching to 2G if phone is plugged in
It doesn't bother switching to 2G until wifi disconnects
If screen is off for more that 10 minutes, it will enable 2G Only setting
If screen is off and battery is below 30% (configurable in the app) enable 2G Only setting
3G is re-enabled as soon as the screen is turned on unless battery is below configured percentage
Install the apk then reboot the phone.
After reboot, run the Toggle2G app to enable the service and configure the low battery %
ToDo:
Widget to switch between Auto, 3G and 2G.
If you think of a feature or find a bug, let me know.

Unless I'm wrong, it doesn't appear that the 2G/3G radio is on when wifi is on, so it doesn't bother switching it from 3G to 2G because it resets the radio and I didn't want it to do that if it didn't matter. So basically, when wifi is on and connected, it never switches to 2G when the phone is asleep until wifi finally disconnects.
Adjustable timer is next and the Locale plugin is a great idea.

Sorry, didn't realize that I removed it. I've uploaded a new version that has a configurable time and an option to still enable 2G when the phone is powered (Allows me to debug with the USB cable plugged in)
It would be awesome if you could add a db value threshold as well.
BTW, I'm convinced this same method is used on iphone 4 to get the battery life it does.
cool, will this be open sourced ?
OK, I've updated on more time.
Fixed a bug where sometimes the service wasn't getting any CPU so it wouldn't set to 2G in a timely manner. Should be responsive now. Note that setting to 1 minute could mean it can take 1 minute 59 seconds to switch to 2G

In a low reception area the phone tends to switch back and forth between 3g/2g. I think somewhere around 104.
So basically disable the 3g when the reception is between ___ and ___.

Description:
Smart WiFi Toggler is an application designed to control your phone's WiFi using location based rules. Its aim is to conserve battery and minimize data charges by turning WiFi off when not connected to a network, and turning it on when a known hotspot is present. It constantly learns where your hotspots are located to make its decisions.
It's a very useful application if you frequently forget to turn WiFi off when leaving a hotspot, or if you want to automatically switch from mobile data to WiFi to conserve battery whenever you're back into a hotspot.
Hope you enjoy using Smart WiFi Toggler as much as I enjoyed building it!
*** I am happy to add support for more languages. If you are willing to help with the translation, please drop me an email. Thanks. ***
Features:
- Automatically learns your WiFi hotspot locations.
- Turns WiFi off when disconnected from WiFi network.
- Automatically turns WiFi on when near a known hotspot.
- Uses your network location. No GPS battery drain.
- Provides the ability to control "auto-connect" behavior for each hotspot.

Great idea!
If I understood correctly from the screenshots, the app will shut down wifi when the connection is lost. How does it know when the device is back to hotspot area? By using gps locations?

GPS is not used. It uses your network location. It's not 100% accurate, but the aim was to use as little battery as possible. GPS would not have fit that criteria.
Actually that's what I wanted to hear because, as you say, gps would spoil the idea of battery saving.
Now I really have to try this!
Cool app bro. You finally released it to the public. I will definitely check it out. You guys should probably try it. There is very hard work in it. Keep up the good work.

Nope
Finally got it working. It was my fault.
Now it's crashing on me when I select the start button. On an evo 3d running cm9.

Well that's no good. Please send me your logcat trace. I'll try to find out why that's happening.
Edit: I just saw the crash report. Do you have a CDMA phone? If so, it won't work. Currently, it only works on GSM. I should have mentioned that, sorry.
Awwww! Yes it's cmda. I'm sad now, all the other apps like this are out dated. Oh well, keep up the good work coughcmdacough
Updated to version 1.1. Now supporting CDMA devices (thanks to Cloaker).

I don't know really. I've never tried Y5.
After checking it out, it looks outdated (kidding...). Smart WiFi Toggler has more options i guess. Timer control, per-wifi settings, etc.
Try it, see if you like it. If not, I'm happy you tried anyway.

Y5 for me seemed to open too large of an area, this seems tighter and has more options. Also, I'm not afraid to offend, lol, y5 is outdated.
Yes, Y5 is very outdated at this point and is probably abandonware, but it does still work.
Always looking to replace abandoned apps with apps still supported though, so I'll give this a try.
I have an issue/bug? and a couple of questions so I can understand how it works.
First, in the initial startup settings pages, I chose to not run service in foreground, but if I did, I couldn't uncheck show notification icon. After initial setup, when I go into settings, run service in foreground was checked. But, over in those settings, I can disable the show notification icon. Seems like run service in foreground and no notification icon is my preferred solution, so I'll use that. Hopefully, that will keep the program from getting killed.
So, is this using cell tower information to determine that I'm near a known wifi hotspot?
What happens if I walk out of my house and lose the wifi connection for a couple of minutes and then I come back in and want to connect back to wifi. It seems like it will turn wifi off after 30 seconds because I was disconnected from my wifi hotstop. Will it turn wifi back on by itself again?
EDIT: Tested it and wifi does not come back on. So, then what logic makes it ever come back in? Do I have to go far enough away that smart wifi toggler thinks I'm out of range of my wifi and then come back in range?
Hopefully, there's a way to make that work better or that's probably a deal breaker for me.
The thing I don't like about Y5, which I think this fixes is if I turn off wifi while Y5 is running, it turns it right back on immediately. The only way to actually make wifi stay off if I'm in a known wifi hotspot is to disable Y5.
It'd be nice if there was a way that if I manually turn off wifi, it stays off, but if wifi just gets disconnected, it comes back on automatically.
What happens if I set wifi disconnection to 0? Will wifi still go off when I'm out of range (based on your cell tower information) of a known wifi hotspot?
Hi lexluthor. Thanks for trying out the app. Let me see if my answers can be useful:

As far as I know, android does not permit running in foreground mode without showing a notification. If I'm wrong here, I'd appreciate an example where this is not the case. If you choose to not run in foreground mode to avoid the icon, android will keep killing and restarting the service because of inactivity.
Do I understand correctly that you could disable the icon in foreground mode? If so, please make sure that whenever you check foreground mode, you have to restart the service so it can take effect. (It should show you a "service restart required" toast message).

You are correct. It is using your cell location info. Just like you've observed, when wifi gets disconnected, the timer will start counting. On timeout, it will turn wifi off. Logically, there is no way the app can know if you are inside or outside. What it does do however, is the next time you wake the phone up from sleep (screen off then back on) it will enable wifi and wait for a connection. (I'm assuming here that you are connected to the same cell inside and outside of your house).
The only difference I can think of inside and outside your house is the signal strength. This is something I plan to experiment with to see how useful in can be to get even more accuracy.

This is something I was experimenting with, but it made things complicated. How would the app know when to turn it on again automatically at a later time? Would you have to leave that location then come back? I guess this is something worth trying in future releases.

Setting the disconnection timer to zero will disable auto-wifi-off. This means WiFi will be kept on.

I'll double check the service a little later. Right now, foreground mode is on, but I have no icon. I'll reboot and see if it remains that way. I'm probably wrong, but I thought you could have a foreground service in ICS with no icon.
Anyhow, no, wifi didn't come back on for me even after I turned the screen off/on. Your assumption that I'm connected to the same cell is probably wrong. In areas with a lot of cell towers, couldn't my phone connect to many different towers, even within my own house? Y5 says it has something like 30 towers remembered for me. Also, I know if I reset my Y5 data, even after a few days, there are times when I'm connected to wifi and connected to a cell tower that Y5 hasn't learned yet.
If your logic is that a wifi hotspot is associated with the cell tower that I'm connected to when I first connect to the wifi hotspot, that's going to be a problem if I can connect to many different towers while at that wifi hotstop.
Appreciate your responses so far. I'm just trying to help improve your program, not being critical in any way.

If it didn't come back on, then you must have camped onto another cell. As I mention in the help section, if you're house is located in an area that keeps your phone hopping between cells, then Smart WiFi Toggler has to save all of them. It does in fact do that on every cell update whilst you're connected to a WiFi. This is the "learning curve" I mention in there. Once it has associated these cells with the hotspot, then you're good to go.
The thing I noticed about Y5 when I tried it today is that while I was standing in one location (inside an office -- with an inbuilding antenna system), it saved more than one cell for the hotspot. I felt this was excessive as it will make the auto-wifi-on window larger. Smart WiFi Toggler only saves the cell you are connected to. Not the neighbors. This has an initial disadvantage, but after that it's more efficient.
Anyway, I understand your concerns and your questions are all valid. I'm happy to answer all of them. In the end, you just have to try it and see if it works for you or not. I didn't have much audience to test the app with, but I'm fairly confident that 5 months of first hand testing and refining should make it a decent app.
Great. Your responses are helping me understand the app better note and i should be able to help test better.
Will give it a learning curve and keep an eye on it and will post later.
Ok. Looks like run in foreground and notification icon are now linked together. I turned run in foreground off as I don't like notification icons. I run that way with tasker and my phone has never closed out that service.
I'm still not seeing wifi ever come back on on it's own. I've turned wifi on and off a a few times in the hopes of it trying to remember more cells.
I see may cell location update received notices in the logs. When I toggle wifi on and off, I seem to always get cell already exists for this wifi entry in the log.
So, after I toggle wifi off and get that entry in the log, I put the phone to sleep, wait a few minutes, turn it back on and wifi still doesn't ever turn on.
Any idea what's going on?
I have a Verizon CDMA Samsung Galaxy S III running stock/rooted.

Tasker on Nexus 5

I am new to using Tasker and am using it on my Nexus 5. For those Nexus 5 users who are using Tasker, are you having any problems? Do you know if Tasker has been updated to fully work with 4.4? I have checked Tasker's wiki and the last update for 4.0+ is/was 6/17/2013.
Basically what I am getting at, as I am building profiles/tasks, I am trying to determine if/when my profile/task does not work, it is me or is it Tasker not being updated?
I have searched the Nexus 5 Themes and Apps forum here and did not see much mention regarding Tasker. I am posting here rather that Q&A as Tasker is an app.
I appreciate your help.

I also have issues with Secure Settings, but that's because Secure Settings hasn't been properly updated I believe.
All my profiles work with Tasker. I had to change some of the complicated ones to reference different directory paths but otherwise fine. Secure Settings profile is working too, but thats to turn off pattern lock....

I use Widgetlocker as my main lock screen. When I am not at home, I want the Android stock pattern lock behind it. When I am at home (triggered by WiFi connection) I want it off.
Pattern lock and lock screen are not the same. Pattern lock has it's own specific setting within Secure Settings.
If you want to disable the basic lock screen go to Display/Keyguard and set it to off.

Keylock off works fine for me.
Tasker works perfect for me so far. Also, no issues on Secure Settings. At least for the functions I use it for.
My last Tasker creation was using my old Nexus 4 as a motion camera/IP camera. Whenever I connect to my wifi it disables the camera, Once I leave it turns it on.
Gets pretty creepy when you get false positives and it takes pictures of nothing though
I am having significant problems with Tasker on the N5. I am not able to set profiles by using the cell near state. Whenever I scan for towers when I'm on LTE it returns no results. If I put my phone on 3G, then it finds towers.
This was never a problem on my EVO LTE. I think it has to do with Sprint upgrading towers to Network Vision and this being a triband phone.

I have Tasker set to turn on my wifi when I get in range of my house. Since the N5 has LTE, tasker can't seem to get the cell location thing figured out. It must be different than 3g/edge. I had to set it up to remember cell towers instead.

I think tasker has a problem with the triangulation on the LTE network. Anyway...I created a new state, hit phone, then "cell near". Hit the "scan" button and walk around your house so it can pick up the 2 or 3 towers. I then just used the newly created "state" to determine when I was close to my house.

Wifi always on

Hello fellow Z3 owners,
I have had my Z3 for 3 days, and today I found something alarming: the Wifi seems to always be on, even when I manually turn it off from the System Settings.
It appears turned off from the settings, but using an app such as WIfi Analyser, I can see the networks around me, and I don't have any error message saying I have to turn WIfi on.
While using WIfi Analyser, I can go back to the settings page, and see that the wifi really appears to be off.
Does anyone have an explanation? Could anyone try to reproduce this?
Cheers,
JPascal.

in android JB or Kitkat(IDR which) google added the feature for the wifi to "always scan" even when its off. i recreated your problem on my z3 and the exact same thing happened. go into your wifi menu, hit the soft key for options.. click advanced and then uncheck "wifi scanning always on" or whatever it says. this should also save you some battery.
Thanks for the solution! I found that as well, I still think there is a privacy issue. IMO this should be disabled by default.
Thanks for sharing, cheers,

During the setup process, the user is asked if they want this service to run in background and I always say no.

That's actually a very good question. I am not a Wifi specialist, and when I saw that Wifi Analyser could see WIfi networks while my phone was saying the wifi is off, I assumed the WIfi was actually on all the time.
If I understand correctly, it's only turned on to scan surrounding Wifi networks. If it means your phone only listens, and does not speak with surrounding networks, then it should remain undetected, and we do not have any privacy issue. But if scanning means talking with surrounding networks, then it means these networks could potentially know you're around, right? Please understand that this is a question, not a conclusion.
Cheers,
JPascal.

Sure, it's always good to consider security. Without going through the code it's not possible to know, but I'd imagine it's passively listening, if all it's doing is seeing which base stations are in the area. Were it to be actively probing then it should only be giving your MAC address away, which is not normally considered a threat. I turn it off to save battery, because otherwise wifi is on all the time!

How not to connect to network

How do I set the phone to NOT connect to a network unless I need to?
Now it connects to that network automatically.
I [edit] do not want to "forget" the network. I do not want not switch off the network. I must leave ON the phone's network radio.
-----------------
I installed a video dashcam recorder in my car and it broadcasts a network (cannot be switched off) that SOMETIMES I need to access to setup, configure, view recorded videos, etc.. This network does not access the internet.
When I drive I need my phone's DATA connection to access the internet (WhatsApp, etc.) and I need my phone's network radio to be on to help google maps and other apps locate my position.
If I leave my phone's radio on, my phone connects to my dashcam network and cannot access internet blocking WhatsApp and other apps.
Can anyone help me, pls? I thank in advance your time/expertise.

I apologize. I did not explain clearly and I will edit my post.
I do not WANT to forget the network because I want to use it sometimes to accesses a device (but this device does not access internet).
When I don't need to access the device I prefer to connect to the internet and, therefore, I need to use the phone carrier data plan. But to improve google maps I also need to keep the WiFi radio on.

For that, you don't actually need WiFi on - Location services has access to the wifi radio for scanning assuming you haven't disabled that in location settings.

Yes, exactly. That is why I don't want to turn off or disable the WiFi radio.
So, if I don't disable the WiFi radio, how do I set the phone to only connect to that network when I need and not automatically? How do I set it up in such s way that when I step into the car it does not connect automatically to that network (that has no intent access)?

Turn off wifi in settings or with the quick toggle. Make sure scanning is enabled under settings / security & location (or the equivalent in EMUI, I don't remember where it is as I've only run EMUI momentarily over the past several months).
The radio itself will not be completely powered down - it'll still be available for location services to use for scanning.

I was not aware that google maps will not be affected by toggling off WiFi. Thank you for taking your time to help me.
While it's good news that I can google off Wi-Fi for google maps, I keep forgetting my Wi-Fi on (I have the habit to keep it on at all times) so I keep loosing all WhatsApp/Viber messages and calls.
So is there absolutely no way to NOT connect automatically to a network if the radio is ON?

I'm not sure there's a way to say that... Most of the time, personally, I end up turning wifi off, as it's a real pain when you're moving through access points (and the device insists on holding the connection), so unless I know I'm going to have a stable connection and I'm staying in the same place for a while, I almost universally leave it off...

I appreciate that your circumstances are different but I always have Wi-Fi (work/home) and I don't move a lot so it's always on.
Is there absolutely no way to avoid automatic network connection when WiFi is on?

Can anyone help me understand how to stop automatic network connection?

use wifi plus
Try a WiFi prioritising software... And give lowest priority to the one you don't want to use. Had one of those with kitkat and worked flawlessly

This app will not install on android 8.0 because it's an unknown source.
I then googled now to install unknown sources but my Huawei Mate 9 has different menu options from all googled step by step explanations how to install apps from unknown sources. Huawei Mate 9 android 8.0 lacks the bottom box "special access"
I attach 2 images of the 2 stumbling blocks.
Can you suggest a different Apk or how to install apps from unknown sources?

First of all thank you for the advice add time.
I installed 3 different prioritizing apps but none had the option to prioritize data connection over WiFi or the option to exclude a specific network when the phone WiFi radio is ON.

Thank you! Looks like this app has the option that I need!
It's been scanning for networks for 10 minutes already (preferred WiFi Networks is still scanning) but I guess that the first time it takes a bit longer. As soon as it's ready I will test it!

The app keeps scanning for preferred WiFi Networks endlessly. I wrote to tech support and they will compile a specific code for my Huawei Mate 9 running Android 8.0. Apparently WiFi Switcher does not run on my device!
