2G/3G Toggle?

Any idea how to enable/unhide this feature under wireless networks? Switching to 2G only nearly doubles my battery life on my Nexus

I've just been accessing the band selection menu and selecting gsm bands only. The menu is *#*#2263#*#*. This little "fix" doesn't hold after a reboot, fyi.
I also use the SMODA widget to shut off the data connection whenever I don't need it.
It sucks that mobile data is always on by default, with no stock option to shut it off, and that you can't select to only use 2g right out of the box.

I've seen some widgets that will turn 3G off/on... I wonder if those work on the captivate. I'll give it a try today.

I think you should be able to force it by going to *#*#4636*#*# and selecting GSM only, but that's such a hassle

I'm not looking to completely disable data - I just want to be able to disable 3G when I don't need it (and revert to EDGE data)

The widget I have - which comes with Weather and Toggle Widget - does not work. It just brings up the wireless connections menu, but of course you can't turn it off from there.

I'm using smart bar, and it has a 3g-2g switch, but it isn't working. Since this functionality isn't working on my captivate, but worked on my other phones, I'd say it's been intentionally pushed out. If a hack can fix this, I'd love to learn about it.

I am also interested in this. I work in.a area that switches from edge to 3g a lot and when i had a iphone i increased my battery a lot by setting it strictly to edge at work.

After all the digging and searching around, I found two apps that work perfectly on Samsung Captivate for toggling mobile data (3G)
- Juicedefender (it has a widget you can use to toggle 3G quickly)
- SMODA Widget (It doesnt have too many 5 star ratings but works fine on my samsung captivate).
My phone is rooted but I believe it is not a requirement of either of the above apps. Hope this info is useful for other captivate owners.
Most of the other APN / 3G toggle apps on the market try to put a suffix on the APN names in settings. On the samsung captivate this works only with a restart/reboot. Meaning if you disable 3G using the app it would put a suffix like 'disabled' or something to the APN name. But your phone still has the 3G connection using the original APN settings. Only after you restart the phone does it see the 'disabled' APN name and is not able to use and hence no 3G. Vice versa when you want to enable 3G back - needs restart.
I dont know what process the above 2 apps use but they work instantly on my samsung captivate. No need to restart or click a bunch of other settings. They work perfectly and as simple as it should be.

i heard juice defender works well

Where are you seeing the option to switch from 3G to EDGE? I just installed Juice defender but can't find the option. The mobile data connection widget just shuts off my data entirely.

Sorta on topic but when I try to install juice defender it is never able to install the aosp helper. Does it work for you guys?

Yea, I was hoping someone maybe knew which file you had to edit to reenable that option in the network settings page

I already have Juice Defender I know I can disable data completely, but I'm looking for something that can disable 3G while keeping EDGE alive

It says install completed, but in the logs, it says there was an error

It would be nice to disable 3g while at home or something , where the reception is a bit sketchy, but i could at least still use it for voice and texting , and use wifi for the internet and app stuff. Could help conserve battery life as well

I tried smoda and can confirm that it doesn't work for me. It disabled data completely as I cannot access the web.when I activated the widget. It would be nice if we could set this phone to 2g and if data speeds were above a certain threshold for a certain amount of time then we could have it switch to 3g.

Yeah, I'd really just like to force the phone into EDGE mode when I'm not using it - updating weather and fetching e-mails are really not that data intensive and don't need the speed from the 3G connection. I'd like to have a widget that will turn the 3G back on when I'm on breaks or whatever and want to surf the web, watch a video on YouTube, whatever. I believe you can do this in the service menus, so you would think there would be a way to accomplish it with a widget - even if it were Galaxy S specific.
I'd pitch in 5 bucks towards a bounty towards such a widget if somebody could create one.
Juice defender does have the option to run the 3G radio on 15/1 cycles (off for 15 minutes, on for one) but I'm not sure how/if my apps that would use background data would sync up with that.

i9000 vs 1897 band settings?
Now that I've moved to the JH2 firmware I'm back to some of the AT&T crap, like hiding the band selection setting.
I'm thinking that the differences are in the Settings.apk.
Others have said that since it's a system app and signed, you can't just install it. So I'm wondering if it would be possible to pull the Settings.apk from the i9000 rom and stuff it using the update.zip method.
May have to do a backup and give it a shot.
Once that setting is available, you can use 2G 3G switcher from Market to bring up the UI and toggle between EDGE and HSDPA.
By keeping it on EDGE, my battery lasts alot longer...

If we could manage to enable it juice defender would switch back and forth automatically based on download speed and/or the screen being on/off, which be ideal.

[Q] Switch Wifi and 3G according to location?

Hey there, I'm looking for a little app on my Froyo that will turn on the WiFi and disable the 3G as soon as I reach my home (for example) and when I move outside again, that it'll disable the WiFi and enable the 3G.
Whether it's done by GPS or done simply by noticing if the WiFi signal is available, I don't mind. Does anyone have a clue about this?

I'm not sure if either can do it since I've yet to use them, but you may want to look into two programs, one called "Tasker" the other "Locale"
Both have the ability to execute location based tasks.

I've used both Tasker and Setting Profiles to accomplish this. Tasker is very powerful, but a bit fiddly to get working correctly.
SP is simpler, and works very well. The jury is still out.

There are a few apps that will do that like tasker and locale, but for my needs I use setting profiles.

Y5 do it great. remembers WIFI location acording to cell info (doesn't waist battery for GPS) and turn on and of.
only bug in my eyes it that in order to shut down WIFI on a remembered location, you need to disable app or forget location.

So, now I'm trying Y5. Only down side is that so far none of the programs has the ability to disconnect the 3G upon activating WiFi.

i think it does!
at least in HTC DESIRE it turn 3G off

Locale can do the job. For example, you can set 3 situations.
Set 'At Home' Situation - Condition: Location plug in(any good location plug in)
- Settings: Locale variable plug-in, add, type 'Home', True.
Set at Defaults - Add Locale variable, add Home = False
Add Wifi - Off
Add 3G - ON
Set Wifi - Conditions: Home = True
Settings: Wifi on
3G off
For my case, I've added Appli Detection condition for the Wifi situation where it detect my browser, etc and perform the wifi on. Hope this helps. IMO, Locale does best and is simple.

I use Tasker to do exactly what you ask.
When I get home, Wifi turns on, 3G turns off. And vice versa when I leave.
Same when I get to work.
I do both of these without the need for GPS or even cell tower location..it's based on when I'm near my home wireless network.
Also turns off wifi, 3G and screen rotation when I'm in bed.
And then makes me breakfast in the morning (well, not quite, but it's almost that good! )

I'm stuck for a bit. I have made tasks, but have trouble with the profile. The location, I would like that to be done as the scotsman has got it. According to if it finds your home as well as, in my case, work network. How to do that? Cause when I want to set my location, it takes me to google maps. And I take it that works by GPS. I use Tasker, but I do not believe you can use WiFi location if WiFi is off. Location base uses GPS. You can set an option to do tasks if the WiFi connects. 3G is automatically disabled on my Incredible when WiFi connects, so I do not have to implicitly set it off. Just be sure to adjust your radius when you use GPS location. You do not want to drive way down the street to have WiFi turn off and 3G come back on.
I use Tasker to also launch the car app when bluetooth connects in my truck. There are good examples on the Tasker Web site.

I know theres no possible way to do it with the stock rom but I'm running CM7 and i was wondering if theres a way to do it with Tasker on CM7.

There is a setting on stock to only use 2g...not sure what tasker is but there is also a setting in CPU Tuner that allows you to define which networks you connect to.

You should check out Tasker. It's very powerful.
In a nutshell, you setup conditions, and if those conditions occur, tasks to be completed.
So the OP here would decide when he want's the phone to be 2G only (the condition) and what action Tasker should take, such as turn on 2G only (the task).
I've only just started playing with it, but it's getting a lot of good praise from devs like Paul O'Brien (MCR).

i'm not on CM7 but my solution to this was to install Any Cut and create a shortcut to the specific settings menu "Mobile network settings" with the "Use only 2G networks" toggle. i pretty much keep 2g on at all times unless i'm using maps or am going online, etc.

So, I'm not a Tasker expert by any means, but that's a scenario where I think you would tell Tasker to look for whenever you open Maps, then to automatically switch you to 3G.

Very cool. I'll have to check it out and see if I can get it to turn on GPS when I open maps (the only time I use GPS).

ya it works well on CM7 but not on stock I could never get the gps to turn on

Does it work? I thought the 3g/2g toggle is still on the todolist of tasker.

[Q] Llama Nlpwakelock

Hi all,
Interesting problem I have with llama. Getting Nlpwakelocks as shown in the screenshot.
I've set work and home, and the wakelock was happening at work. My work setting is only to disable GPS, Enable mobile data and disable WiFi if not connected. Any ideas about why llama is causing this? I've seen Nlpwakelocks else where but not under the Llama app.

How is llama set to know you're at work? If you've used location, you will get wakelocks

Currently I'm using the Map addon for Llama. Previously on another ROM I hadn't tried it and wasn't getting this issue. Will remove the addon and post results tomorrow.

Yeah because llama needs to check if you're in a location so uses location services (nlp) to do so.

There are usually better ways to go about doing what you want to do. I use Tasker for it, but I have Tasker profiles run based on time and day. Times when I should be at work, Tasker checks if I'm connected to the home wifi. If I am not, then it does all the things. If I am still connected to the home wifi when I should be at work, I must be at home, so the profile aborts.
This profile uses time and wifi connection status to determine my location.
Of course, this may not be possible for your job. But there is usually more than one way to solve a problem.

Well seems at work there is no problems with llama wakelocking at all. Obviously the NLP from location based tracking was the problem as you stated. I think tasked would be more appropriate for my usage, so I'll give it a try tonight.

Lollipop Data Toggle Non-Root

Fixed my issue on Note 5. Posting in general just for discussion and if anyone had questions.
Saw a bunch of people with issues using widgets to toggle mobile data in lollipop as well as any automation apps.
I put a small app that acts as a widget and emulates you clicking to save you the trouble. Under Venture Alpha J&A.
Put together using Autoinput and requires it to run. Made it to fix my issue with Tasker not being able to turn my data off automatically when I'm wifi range. If anyone wants it... its a $1.42 cause Google gets 30%... link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.venturealpha.datatoggle
Only tested on the new Samsungs but should work on devices running lollipop.
If you don't want to do the $1.42 you can put it together with Tasker and autoinput and make a profile for it to resume the less clicks for data toggle.

So far all the apps that I have tried to do that on verizon won't go to the lesser network speeds UNLESS the other is unavailable. Or else I would be in 3g unless downloading for battery life
My app works off the capabilities the phone already had settings for.
