Cheapest Place to get a Screen - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, Nexus 5 screen is water damaged and wont turn on. (touch works). Anyone know a cheap place to get a replacement? Shipping to Canada would be nice. I looked around ebay most were above $120, one was for $95ish but the seller seemed shady. (all currency is in CDN $)
Couple of Questions:
1) Could someone send me a display that is of lower quality (ie. not 1080p) and it would still work with the nexus 5?
2) How could I check if other parts of my Nexus 5 are damaged? (Speakers, camera, USB, charging work fine)
3) Cheapest place to buy online?

Around $100 is the normal price for the screen.
1) nope I don't think you will find lower display. It doesn't work like that.
2) the only way you can test other parts is first having the screen fix.
3) eBay is probably the cheapest I can think of.

If it got wet enough to fry the screen...there's a good chance more is damaged. I'd put that money towards a new or used replacement.
Just my opinion. Good luck!

For ****s and giggles did you try and stick it in a bag of rice for a day or two?

I've heard it explained that rice does very little actually. Since rice doesn't actually pull moisture from the air (if so, every unsealed bag of rice would eventually soak itself) it would actually need to be touching the water inside the phone and even then the absorption rate would be quite low.
What is actually needed is something designed to pull moisture from the air, such as those "do no eat!" packets found in some packaging.

Best place to find a refurbished or good used Inspire?

Unfortunately, my phone has mysteriously gone missing. It would appear that it fell out of my pocket at some point (though it is inexplicable how it could do so), which really sucks because I had just gotten it set up perfectly with the new Ascension ROM from the Collective and was loving it.
Anyways, I'm in the market for a low-cost replacement, and would be happy with a used or refurbished phone in good condition. Anyone have any recommendations re: the best place to find that? I've looked on Amazon, etc., just wondering if anyone has personal experience with this that might help ensure I get the best deal possible without compromising on quality.
Thanks.
There is a sale thread here on XDA.
Craigslist or eBay are good alternatives but buyer beware. I think each of them requires some skill so if you have never purchased using them then maybe just ask around.
Did you try a Google shopping search?
If the repair costs more than $75 (and that includes having an "expert" do the grunt work) I'd look at grabbing another phone. I picked up my Inspire from Cowboom for $130...refurb and it didn't come with a charger but other than that has worked great.

Not my personal experience but remembered reading it. I replaced one from eBay couple weeks ago for $173 but I also sold the (busted to hell and back) old one on eBay for 78 bucks so ppl are still buying broke ones. For the gold I guess.

If you have the att insurance on it you can get a new replacement one for like 50 or 100 bucks if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the advice - my friend found the phone outside of his house, in some bushes, and it had been rained on for three days. I think there's a good chance it will be okay, but I'm going to leave it to sit and dry for a few days (case off, battery out "doors" off) before I try to fire it up.
Thanks again, I may still need to refer back here in the future...
place it in uncooked rice it will suck out the moisture. Don't let rice in battery compartment. Keep bat and sim cover on.

Another TIP
Get the androidlost app on the market. It's saved my a$$ on more than one occasion last week. Now, if I lose my phone and don't have a sense rom...I can look it up on the androidlost.com website for free and find it!
The lookout app also has a program with tracking your phone though it may decrease battery life
I got my att Inspire 4g from craigslist for $80. It is unlocked and has a clean esn, just a cracked digitizer on the bottom of the screen. I'm hoping its a pretty easy fix, just scared of where to buy a legit replacement for this beast. But it works so amazing regardless now only if I can find a good service provider for this.

I'm selling mine on Craigslist at the moment. I'm asking $195...it's in good condition. I just ordered the Samsung Note.

[Q] Screen Replacement?

Hey Guys, had the skyrocket for almost a year now, first time to drop it and the screen is now cracked. Fully functional though. Is there any way to just replace the glass and not the lcd/digitizer? I paid 150 for the phone and the only replacement screen I can find is 200+. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I searched Google and eBay and could never find just the screen. First person to give a valid link for the screen under 75 bucks will get a 5 dollar donation! Thanks
Edit: After searching a lot, it turns out the glass screen, aka digitizer, is what I need. However, I cannot find it online without including the lcd. Anyone?
I stand corrected. I do apologize. Ones for the skyrocket are much more expensive than i thought. The s2 I'd the one i had in mind.

From what I've read its almost impossible to separate the two without damage. Some have tried heat guns but usually end up breaking something. Seems the two are glued pretty tightly together.

I had a S II Skyrocket fall flat on the screen and the glass cracked. I searched the internet for options to replace the glass, but none were really encouraging, specially if you are like me not really into opening up the phone and un gluing the glass from the LCD. And any spare part to replace the LCD and glass was costing no less than $150. In short what i wanted to let everyone know is, i went to a AT&T Device Support/Service center not the regular retail store, just to check if they had any spare parts which could be less than $150. And lucky me!!! they replaced the entire phone for me for $100 + taxes. And just to let everyone know, this phone was a $10 refurbished phone brought from AT&T about 8-9 months back, so no warranty or anything. A plain $100 charge and i was with a new phone. I gave in my old phone with a cracked screen and got a completely new phone and the back plate and sd card from my old phone. So anyone who is ready to spend upto a 100 dollars for fixing up the screen, you might as well try this at a AT&T service center.

Maybe i worded it wrong. The point i wanted to put forth was, this $100 option is for anyone who has a cracked glass on S II skyrocket taken to the AT&T Product Service center. I surely did not have the AT&T warranty which is 90 days for refurbished models, and this damage would surely not be part of the Samsung warranty.

What is an ATT HOX worth after it has been drowned?

The title says it all. I swam with one a week after I bought it. It has been in rice for a month and dry air conditioned air before that. No joy.
Does it have any value?

This may be a long shot but you might be make to go into an AT&T and sat it won't turn on and they will do a warranty swap. In my experience they almost never check the water strips; I don't believe the HTC One X has strips due to its unibody closed design. Just to be safe shine a flashlight down the 3.5mm jack and the micro USB port and make sure there isn't any red or pink, yellow is ok.

All the AT&T stores I went into in the past ALWAYS check the water strips 100% of the time. Even with the phone like HOX or Nokia L900, there are water strips inside. I know for Nokia L900, it is located inside the micro SIM slot.
It's in the micro sim slot.
Man, that sucks. The real question now is, how much is a paperweight worth?

no way. may be a SLIGHT chance if it was within 30 days. outside of the 30days you would have to send it in or take it to the the DSC and of course they will check the strip.

And the new AT&T warranty exchange policy states that if they found the returned phone is not warrantable, i.e. water damage, you get charged full retail price of the phone.

I am not expecting it to. However, it is still in rice. I am having a hard time bringing myself to put it back together and trying to turn it on. I have enough disappointment for the moment. If it does, I will sell it as working, revived.
Must say though, HTC did one hell of a job with the packaging. It's robust but you can take it apart with your hands and a thumb nail.

Ok. So today I decided to try it. It has sat in rice since I first posted. I charged it and turned it on. It works perfectly! I transferred the microSIM from my Rogers HOX and it works perfectly. So I have an unmarked, almost brand-new AT&T HOX for sale! Rooted and with 1.85.
I think I should buy a lottery ticke!!
Congrats dude. Haha, I would still buy the water damaged one for 50 though wish I had the funds for a backup One X.
Maybe I should sell that Atrix

[Q] Screen replacment

I have been lucky with my screen so far but my co-worker's phone died not even two weeks in. He said his kid had knocked a glass (cup/mug) over hitting the screen at an unusual angle.
The phone it self works grate but it must have caught the screen at the wrong angle for it to crack. I say this because I have dropped my Nexus 5 with some force and it has been fine so far. Also its not often I see a crack starting from the side (see pic) and not one of the corners.
The only place here in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) that would repair it had a price that was ~50 shy of a brand new Nexus 5 (he has a 16gig).
Question:
Anyone know if there is a place in Edmonton or online where I can get a cheep screen (and replacement advice) or cheep screen replacement?
Also if you have had a similar experience how have you dealt with it?
Note: The screen protector in the pic was not attached during the crack it is a iPhone4 protector added after the crack so that the phone can be used without bleeding fingers.

I have some good news for you but at the same time it depends on your LUCK.
well, a member on XDA broke his Nexus 7 2013 screen when it was just launched (Less than 10 days).
He tried getting help and no one had spare parts available online, he sent it to ASUS directly paying the postage.
What happened was that his Nexus came back repaired and ASUS didnot even charge him anything apart from postage he paid.
He was a lucky man and I hope you and your friend are too!
Good Luck!

Your friend should check out the credit card he bought it with and see if it comes with a accidental warranty perk. Some CC have a 90 day period of "insurance" if purchased using the CC.

With screens... You get what you pay for. I would highly suggest shopping around in the average price range that they are selling for. The nexus 6 screens are still around $140 to $150 and the phone is older. So it's a fair price.
Go too cheap, you get a crap product most times.

At the end of the day how do you truly know that anyone else doesn't source the screen from the same Chinese knockoff factory as just getting it directly from that same factory. There's another thread on sourcing batteries and it's the same problem. Claims of "oem" quickly disappear when you have product in hand....
What I WOULD like to know why the heck the 6p screens are so expensive. Even as eBay fakes or Aliexpress... The price hovers around $150
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Oh. We all know you won't get OEM. That's almost impossible. But... If it's less than let's say $125, I'll likely pass it up. (some circumstances may be involved to sway my decision) From my experience, cheap means cheap. I've always had better products going with products that sell for the average price or slightly above.
The reason they are expensive is because they are good products. Just because it's not OEM doesn't mean it's not good. Chinese doesn't mean bad product either. I wish people would drop that. They are one of the world's leaders in manufacturing technology. They can have decent stuff. And they do.
To touch on the battery thread. Most people shoot for those $10 batteries. Those are cheap and will perform like a cheap battery. But if you go for the ones in the mid 20s, you usually get much better quality and proper temperature sensing. Usually.
In the end, it's your choice. Are you willing to risk your device and possibly your safety by going the cheap route?and that's perfectly fine if you do. I've done it. Or are you willing to fork over a little more for a better chance at a more reliable products? I find that balance gives me the best results.

You need to call or chat with Huawei tech support and tell them you need to buy a screen replacement. Once you give them the details, they send you an email and a link where you can purchase the service. Once that's all done, they send you a label and you're ready to go.

That sounds more like the water damage you had ruined your cell signal. A few connectors in your phone probably started corroding.

I find it ridiculous that most other screens of similar size are under 100 bucks off ebay but ours average at $150. Regardless if it's off ebay or Aliexpress or Amazon

I bought mine from eBay , 95€ and I'm good. Just a warning. The new screen doesn't come with the vibration motor nor the volume and power buttons. Be careful when removing those , my volume down cable broke , so I had to replace it , but I already had everything glued in. Took it to a repair store and they fixed it for 30€ , so yeh , be careful. Buttons cost 3$ or so , but the backglass often shatters when removed , so 10 more dollars for the back glass , plus the shipping , turns out to be pretty expensive. Careful. Also top earpiece is tricky to remove , is sealed with glue and everything pops out but it has a copper cable in it, if that rip off , you messed up. Careful with usb board , it has some contacts underneath , you got to do it perfectly , otherwise , no charging.
Best of luck boy ! Tell me the results at the end !
