[Q] Worth rooting now or waiting.

Hello all, I am new to the world of rooting, and even Android (came from an iPhone). I am just wondering is it worth going through all the trouble to create a Goldcard, and restoring stock radios, etc, just to get the Root now OR if I waited would a simpler method come along in the coming weeks. I'm just wanting some input and information from you guys. Thank You.

Well to answer your question you have to decide what you really want out of your phone. If you want wireless tether with paying for it or you just like to customize then rooting is for you right now. If you just want to get into rooting and have some fun with your phone then you should probably wait for a one click root. I can tell you from experience that this is not the easiest root method. That being said I have rooted several different devices and flashed a number of different roms. Rooting is fun for me. If you mess up there are a bunch of people here to help.
The Inspire 4g doesn't really have alot of roms to flash right now anyway. Well best of luck.

I am waiting on rooting. only things i need it for are wifi tethering and the upload speeds. currently i can make do with pda.net since its free for 30 days and there are sites you can download the .apk files (wont mention here cause that may be a breach of the forums TOS) so i have 30 days till i will root or not. in that time the xda community can do a LOT! i am very happy with my phone the way it is right now with bloatware and what not. I would grab a copy of the stock ROM and keep in touch on the forums as far as latest developments. honestly it cant hurt you to wait

from what i've been reading on this forum, you can sideload without root. also, it seems a few people are having some success with removing bloat without root as well. i would recommend reading some of the other threads, there's a lot of good info.

Normally it takes about a month or two to get a one click. By that time there will be a lot of roms out. If you just want to side load download the side load wonder machine. search for it here on xda.

Sideload Wonder Machine.. and it works. i had a little problem not recognizing my phone untill i unplugged it and replugged it back in. no problems after that.

Well considering that the latest ROM for the Desire HD has been out quite a while and there is still no one click root available for it makes me think that it may be a while.

A gold card is a specially formatted SD card that will allow an HTC device to be flashed with an unbranded ROMs instead of only accepting branded ROMs developed for the specific carriers.

root/no root

Im coming from a droid x and find to root this alittle challenging. While I cant get root I havent found one that I like. My whole purpose if to just get rid of bloat. After my last attempt I got crappy reception and wanted to unroot. I did and reception was back to normal. After all the problems and what with the gingerbread files I didnt want to go that route with that radio. So what are my options? With the last root attempt I used the 1 click method, was that my problem? Do I need to read up more on adb commands. Or should I say screw it and stay stock? There are multiple roms out there but havent found one for my particular needs. I know I bought this phone to learn more and be a challenge but this is trully a pain in the ass. So comments advise is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't give up if i were you, rooting is the way to go. And ya thunderbolt is "different" but it seems from here on out most lockdown phones will be this perplexing at times, but good news to use, some companies have given up and will open up there future phones boot loaders. And its not because it lock down it just because they weren't "meant to be rooted and optimized for the user".
It seems weird that your reception got worse due to rooting, i have not heard that problem before or seen it posted in these threads. Most of the complants from rooting is either having random reboots, or the unfortunate brick or root didn't actually work for them.
Just make sure your up to date with the froyo radio when you were rooted, I know you cant check now, but maybe you used an older one the auto root method was using? Its worth a check. The newest one has had some good reception Verizon sent in a OTA.
And i used an auto one click way and it worked for me so it may depend on what one you used. But its advised to use adb.
Also there are a lot of basic de-bloat roms out there, they are just buried at the end of this forum, and never get updated because once they are de-bloated there is not much left that needs to be updated.
And dont worry about the Gingerbread problems, I wish i never left Gingerbread, i have had more problems on froyo then i was on gingerbread. With froyo i still have problems, but Gingerbread seems to run so smoothly, and a new leak is hopefully around the corner, there was one up but it was taken down and senior moderators said its coming be patience.

Well here is the file I was pointed to when I first started and I went from having no bars to 1x to 3g to 4g and all over the place.I guess I wont give up because I wanted an challenge but man this is different. More reading reading reading and find more on ADB.

Never seen that file. Stick to the development section of this forum and you should be gtg. Most of what you need is stickied at the top.

Thanks for the link, in my search I had a couple of other ways to do it but I did search.

Rooting is the only way to TRUELY enjoy this phone and all it has to offer IMO.

Ok well all of a sudden my phone cant receive call or make them but can make and receive texts? Any ideas on that. I got a phone call yesterday but it was a little wack. Called tech support and now no calls.

[Q] Advice and Options

Hey everyone, just looking for advice mainly.
I just recently bought my M8 as I retired my DNA which I ran ViperDNA for the past couple of years. I am still on a grandfathered unlimited plan, thus the reason for creating a thread. I haven't been in depth with androids in quite a while. I simply rooted and rom'd my DNA, and left things.
A little background - obviously I have the M8 and unlimited data. I also have a macbook pro, and my old windows 7 laptop died out on me. And finally, I am not the most code savvy anymore and wish to keep things simple.
What I am looking for from my new phone is pretty simple. I am perfectly fine with most things stock on it. All I would really like to do is remove the tethering block, and possibly delete a bit of the bloatware that came with it.
From my reading, it looks like I need to root to be able to tether. If I root without flashing a custom rom, am I still able to update when they hit verizon? Will simply rooting my phone give me the options to remove bloatware?
If not, what other options do I have? I am passed the point of wanting to wipe my phone from time to time to update and such. I tend to keep everything on it, and it gets old having to re-personalize it to my liking.

I would say a good choice is root/unlock and install the Viper ROM for the verizon M8. This ROM will do OTA updates as they come out and does not require you to re-personalize. I have been running this ROM for several months now and have had no issues. Great solid ROM.

Just root won't stop ota's but do you want to keep root? There are certain apps that you can use from the play store for tethering that say they get around needing the paid service for tethering. I have used them in the past but i like the native tether app my phone didnt seem to get as hot. Honestly never tried any on my m8 rooted and soff since aquirering the phone. If your not interested in flashing want ota and root.. Might want to root and soff.
See that the last post offered viper ROM good ROM allows what you want.

From having had Viper previously, I will say I loved it. But at the same time, there was still a bit of flashing to do and that is not what I am looking for at the moment. As for the apps to use to get my tether working, nothing that I know of will allow wifi tethering without root.
So I guess my question at this time is am I able to just simply root my phone to do all that I have mentioned above without flashing a rom? Are there other steps I need to take to reach my goals? I am fine with the stock rom. I just dislike bloatware, need the wifi tethering, and would also not mind to have the battery saver app that comes stock but is hidden.

Well, you can use Weaksauce to root only, the question is if you will keep root through the next OTA update. Nobody will know until you try it....
Just rooting will not allow you uninstall apps on the /system partition. You need to be S-off for that. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but that is my current understanding of S-on on this device......
There is a way to tether without root: it's the paid version of FoxFi. Not the most elegant solution from what I'm reading, but it works.
But you know, I think you would get everything you desire by getting S-off, flashing a custom recovery and then CleanROM. It's strictly debloated, perm-rooted stock. Clean, simple and stable.
And when the next OTA comes out, you can bet that Scott will put out a CleanROM version of it in no time. Why is that harder than taking an OTA?
It just involves downloading a file and flashing it in recovery..

I'm curious to see the outcome of the OP. I recently came back to Android from using an iPhone for over a year. I went to the iPhone because I was tired of roming and never being content with the device performance. There was always bugs, updates or new kernel. Now that I'm back I'm getting the root itch again but really want to refrain of tinking with it and going through that downward spiral again. I love the stock look and would like to deploy maybe try a asop rom or two.

I like clean ROM also.... It is kept up-to-date very well... The good stuff worth having in an ota is usually offered by most devs very quickly. I don't know what was needed on your DNA to root and unlock for custom recovery but the m8 process is really quite easy (if you have a PC) lol.

Maybe a gpe ROM? Lol so may choices. The problem with to root or not to root is that its an option now but what if an ota patches the exploit allowing the root? Then you don't have an option except to wait for another exploit if you didn't root and soff your device. If you ask me I would rather have the control to make that decision and not be forced into one. You never know when an update includes a patch for known exploit(s). Just my opinion.

No spiral with CleanROM. Check out the thread. It's pretty boring - which is good! Because there are no bugs (unless introduced by users flashing something on top of the rom), it works just as good as stock, battery is great.... Flash and forget....

Exactly right! It seems to be getting harder and harder to find exploits for root, S-off etc. Anybody think it'll get easier with Android L??? I don't.
You can always flash back to stock, but you never know if the next update won't lock it down for months - or longer....

Rather than removing the bloat, I'd use something like Titanium Backup to just freeze it. I can't say for sure about this phone but my last phone was a Razr Maxx. With that phone, if any of the bloat was removed, the update would fail. If you just froze the apps, you could always unfreeze them, then run the update.

It was inevitable that I came here. Destiny. After spending what seems to be half of my life rooting around the internet (lurking here was at least half of it) trying to learn how to root and unlock my other phones I have been led here to ask for help. So thanks in advance.
OK, I came close to bricking phones but so far I haven't. Today I decided I need help because, let's face it, rooting around these 3,000+ post threads to figure the right way is pretty daunting!
This phone is unmodified and I am not worrying about ROMs at this point. I just need to root it to get it to the halfway point. Can I use SafeRoot or Kingo to do this? The reason I'm not sure of what to do is this has 4.1.2 and it seems most people are concerned about rolling it back rather than forward. Plus, from what I can see, it seems 4.3 something is where a lot of these tools want you to be before moving ahead.
Can you advise me of the path of least resistance on this thing that will still allow me to unlock it when the time comes? Please forgive the typos and Thanks!

No harm in trying those root methods to see if they work. As far as unlocking I'm not sure if the VZW method will work for the straight talk version

Ok more specifically I'm pretty used to the stock android experience (modded of course) but I read about that audio issue and I'm pretty terrified of it because music and calls are the main things I need a phone for. I've been out of the modded android loop since CM10 so I don't really know present day standards or processes for unlocking/rooting let alone standards for ROMs etc. Anyone got any advice?

just go to the guides subforum of a8 2018 and press on the thread that can help u flash twrp lol, all you gotta do is just follow the instructions word by word

my words of advice would be to make sure that you need root before you root it. what i mean by that is think about what you stand to gain by rooting it vs the PITA it is to root this thing. Pay close attention to the 168 hour thing as its been a thorn in many a persons side and caused many a headache. Ive had dozens of android phones and all have been rooted with the exception of the HTC Rezound, which required the OMG PITA "wire trick" to root properly. These phones run very well as stock and dont have much bloatware, so rooting them is becoming less necessary. I got mine in july '18 and have been happy with its performance overall so far. Ive reflashed the stock tar.img a few times for varying reasons, and even rooted it. But after losing SPay capability with root, i flashed back to stock as the gains werent worth the losses to me. Also, SHealth is a task to get working after you trip knox btw.

Yeah tbh I'm ok with the interface now and aside from making the volume buttons change tracks when you hold them down the only things id need root for is clearing out bloatware etc. I think I'll take your advice and not root it for now (until something breaks) but what is this 168 hour thing?

there has been a great deal of discussion about how to get the OEM unlock toggle to show up in the developer options, many suggest that its only obtainable by leaving the phone powered off for 168 hours and then rebooting, not connecting to any network (including cellular) and then enabling developer options and then the toggle should be there.

So wait. My phone is showing the OEM unlock toggle and I can change it. Does that mean I can root? Or would trying to root then make me wait 168 hours? I never tried any custom stuff with it btw. Just bought and installed Lawnchair lol.

Hit the toggle and it'll ask for your pw, then you can flash a custom recovery via Odin

be careful with starting down the root rabbit hole tho. if you flash anything in download mode, youll trip the knox security counter and that is 100% irreversible without sending it to samsung. Root is cool and allows you to do stuff, but honestly ive not found too much reason to root this phone yet. Ive literally had over 20 android phones and i rooted and modded all of them (except the rezound, if you want to know why that one wasnt fully rooted, just google "rezound wire trick" and youll see) and this one just really doesnt need root IMO. Sure it would be nice to have a few root things, but its not worth the trade off of losing samsung pay so i can pay for stuff with my watch. That feature is just waaaay too valuable to me

If his oem is showing and if he marks it and follow the directions he will be fine I have been rooted since day one of having it.
I never got locked out.

Thanks for the advice,but this isn't my first rodeo with Samsung lol. I messed around with the Verizon S5 alot and was lucky to have the version able to unlock it's bootloader.

Will you stop telling people that you will mess up phone if you try to root it.
If people follow directions they have nothing to worry about.
You where bootloop not bricked a brick device is usually a unfix able.
If is fine you what to keep Sam pay but your info you are telling is wrong.
I recently unroot my phone guess what Sam pay work fine.
Then root phone again no lock out and enable treble and flashed gsi image.
So their nothing wrong with rooting if you want to do that.

dude, i dont think youre reading what im saying right. Ive never said that rooting your phone will mess it up. the stuff about the G900V is a DIFFERENT PHONE. FFS. This isnt my first rodeo rooting and modding. Hell, i even was writing mods back in the Evo and S3 days. Im refamiliarizing myself with some of this, but i havent ever said youd mess your phone up if you follow the root instructions. Ill even go as far as saying as long as you dont Odin flash the tar.img for a completely different phone, these things are virtually impossible to hard brick. And yes, a bootloop is referred to as a soft brick. But, it is important to know that if you do root your phone, it WILL make samsung health not work as it did when stock and there is NO WAY of bringing it back without swapping the motherboard

Unlocking the bootloader was completely dependent on the type of EMMC chip that the G900V that you had was using. I got three of those and only one was able to unlock after the Marshmallow update.

the last tinkering i did with the G900V was several years ago and that was at the point when all hope was lost on the locked bootloader. I havent looked into it since as the G900's i had were G900P's which were FAR easier to work with. I did also root and ROM a couple G900VL's, but again was years ago

good times, yeah LOL!!! major waste of time on those friggin G900V's is more like it yeah, i wouldnt root yet, keep the stock recovery so it automagically updates to pie in a few weeks and manually check for updates every so often to force its hand. Also sammobile.com posts them too if you want to force it on via Odin and trip knox. Anyways, if you get the update in the near future, let us know!
