[Q] Bringing Verizon One M8 to Europe - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hi!
I've just returned from a 3 months road trip in the US - love your country and your people btw!
I bought a Verizon One M8 unlocked in a Best Buy Mobile store in Portland and were promised that it would work in Denmark (where I live) - even LTE. However, I'm having some issues. I've set up the correct APN-settings and I get both 2G and 3G but no 4G/LTE. I don't understand that because it should support all the european LTE-bands (LTE1800 (B3), LTE2600 (B7)). Perhaps these bands have to be activated some way?
Also, I keep getting this annoying "non-Verizon sim" error on every boot - thought it was unlocked! I can't update my phone and the mobile hotspot doesn't work as well (it says it needs a compatible sim).
Any help is appreciated!

Telus Milestone problem with 3G

Hi,
I just bought a Telus Milestone while in Canada las week, I bought it from a Best Buy store in Toronto.
I live in Costa Rica and we use 850mhz 3G band but for some reason is not picking up 3G band only GSM with EDGE data connection.
I already try the "WCDMA only" option but still not working it goes out of service.
Is there anything different in Telus 3G network that could be not compatible here?. All of the iPhones 3G and 3GS work here with no problems, same as some other ATT phones.
According to the FCC my phone supports 850mhz 3G band.
Behind the battery it says: FCC IHDP56KC5
And according to FCC documentation it supports WCDMA 850/1900/2100 plus HSDPA 10.2 mbps
So, I don't know what's going on...
Hope somebody can help me, I heard there is a Field Test hidden option on the phone that can show some troubleshooting information, but I don't know how to access it.
Thanks for the help,
Luis
Planning to buy one too, so it'd be handy to know what's going on there. I take it you bought it unlocked? Also, is the APN and all that setup correctly? How do you have it setup, is it one of the new 3G phone lines or an old GSM one (which are capable of 3G as well)?
I have the exact same problem down in Mexico, I just received an unlocked Telus Milestone and all I get is edge. I am using the same APN configuration that I have on my Rogers Dream (G1) and I do get 3G on that one.
Also, I believe this forums are for HTC phones only, I'm not sure we'll get lots of help here on a Moto issue.
Mine does work on HSPA+ here on Telus.
Just a hypothesis would be: Since it has only been released on HSDPA/HSPA+ network in Canada, they haven't done proper testing on 3G mode and there is a bug in 3G only mode.
Like I said, I can't say for sure since the only other GSM network we have here is rogers which is mixed 3G and HSPA+.
On second thought, I do have a Fido/Rogers SIM lying around so I'll give it a shot over the weekend and let you guys know.
Thanks Ady, it does sound like a compatibility issue. I have tried Telcel, I should be able to try ATT in the US next week.
Other than the 3G issue, this phone very darn nice... way faster than the dream, Multitouch work's great ont the browser.
yeah, its really good.
Update: I gave fido a try and it seems to be working, but on HSPA.
I bought it locked to Telus, and got the unlock code from "UnlockMotoDroid"
My SIM card is one of the old GSM ones, but I already try the new 3G SIM Cards (kolby3g) and same problem, only EDGE data connection. APN and all that is correct.
pasker17, I'll love to hear if you find a solution. Keep me posted.
Ady, agree with you, other than the 3G issue, this phone is pretty awesome..!!! Hope I can find a fix soon. I'm wondering if this could be related to the HSPA+ advanced technology that might not be compatible here, but as far as I know it should be backwards compatible with any other 3G technology.
And also, I heard people is using it with AT&T no problems, 3G data speed. Do they have HSPA+ ?
Thanks for your help guys
AllI can tell you guys is ther eis something diffrent with Radio signal we are using here ( Canada ) and the one in South America, I been tryin to use Latam f/w on my stone and no signal aty all whatsoever , so th eother way around doesnt work , they must be something we are missing about network compatibility , 1 thing I am sure Telus 's 3g network is the new HSPA .
double post sry .
DAG,
Yes, maybe there is some sort of advanced HSPA+ network in Canada, and that might be the reason is not working in some other places.
But as far as I know, all those HSPA+ flavors, should be backwards compatible.
Now I wish Motorola frees the bootloeader and I can try it with some other custom ROM.

That wouldn't be it. If you the iPhone works in Costa Rica the Milestone should work.
Have you called ICE? From the very brief info I can find on how to get the iPhone to work in Costa Rica it almost appears that ICE itself has to approved the devices on its network. Apparently they have approved the iPhone. I assume they'd do it via IMEI

Yes and no, you do need to provide an IMEI to get your data plan working, but it should work with any device. I did it when I had a 3GS and have used my SIM on other phones and 3G works normally when setting my old apn. This is indeed bizarre
I called ICE, and went to their offices. Milestone is not
in the "approved list" so they won't even take a look. Same with the iPhones they work fine but are not "approved".
They already got my Milestone's IMEI registered on the system.
At the end they told me that this could be a software incompatibility but since the phone is not "in the approve list" there is nothing else to do or test for them.
Since this phone for sure supports 850mhz 3g band, I'm starting to think that it could be a software thing.
I'll be in the US in a couple of week and will try to test it on ATT, I heard a lot of people are using Canadian Milestone there with full 3G speeds

I take it you've tested known-working SIM cards and all (not only Kolbi ones), I know for a fact that mine works with APN: icecelular, if you care to give it a try with mine, let me know and we can arrange something. I really want to buy a Milestone and want to know if it works with 3g here or not
I've tested GSM Sim Cards (green and pink) and kolbi3g SIM cards, all of them with data enabled, not of them works with 3G data speed only EDGE.

OK then, if you've tested with apn:icecelular for the old GSM ones, and kolbi3g for the new ones, then I guess it's something specific to the phone, but this is extremely strange. :S
Great... is working now in full 3G speed.
I just applied the Barazilian update to 2.0.1 and my radio baseband was changed. And now I can get full 3g data speeds and I have an "H" symbol on top

not getting a signal abroad

I am currently in Japan with my htc inspire and I am not getting any signal at all. I tried resetting and going into the settings menu to change the "network operator" but its greyed out.
does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I desperately need it to work here and I have the international plan activated on my account.

Well in Japan you wont get 3g due to Japan using 2100mhz and The Inspire does not have that freq built in. You should get a call signal. Make sure you enable international roaming on your account. Or if your phone is unlocked buy a local sim card and pop it in.
I enabled international roaming on my account and have the $6 plan added for cheaper international roaming service.
I don't need 3g, just a phone signal to make calls and receive texts. but all I get is a "x |on top.
I have travelled to countless countries with my other unlocked phones and have never had a problem with my phone not picking up a signal.
is it possible that because I changed to a 3g sim card, it doesn't work abroad?
japan does not have gsm EDGE coverage i dont believe. they do have 3G HSDPA, but on 2100mHz, which the inspire does not have. so you are kinda out of luck i'm afraid.
Verified with AT&T's tool here
http://www.wireless.att.com/travelguide/coverage/roaming/step1.jsp
The Inspire doesn't get voice or data in Japan
Had the same problem in Korea last week - sucked big time. How can they call it a world phone and leave out 2100!!!!
That is absolutely terrible and false advertising since Japan and Korea re left out which are huge territories. I also have an unlocked samsung vibrant that I need to charge to see if it works.
Does anyone know if the vibrant has the right frequencies for Japan?

According to the same tool I previously posted, the Captivate will work in Japan and South Korea
Edit: Oh, Vibrant... hold on
Don't know about the Vibrant, does it have the 2100 frequency? If so, then probably yes
Yeah I still can't believe this phone left out the 2100 frequency. I posted about this a few weeks ago and still can't believe I didn't notice that it didn't have the 2100 when I bought it, as I travel to Japan quite often.
I don't like the Atrix and the Infuse 4G isn't out yet so I'm just waiting it out until some better phones come out and will just use a older phone in the interim. Those both support 2100 apparently. Kind of ridiculous that HTC left it out of this phone.
Just did a quick search and it looks like the Vibrant does have 2100 UMTS support.
Sprint CDMA works in Tokyo (and possibly Verizon). Not sure what carrier it uses but it does work for voice only. Probably not much help though.

[Q] Xoom Verizon US with Sim 3G SFR

Hello Guys
Evrething in the title....
Can i use my SFR SIM card in the Xoom bought in US on VERIZON
Cheers

At this time, you can't, the 3G version is simlocked on Verizon network.
Even if i buy it in bestbuy without any fee contract ?

Yes. Verizon doesn't even make use of the SIM slot for 3G (its made for LTE, and it doesn't even work right now). the Xoom is locked to Verizon CDMA.
good morning, the unlock on development section is fot unlock the baseband to all sim (for the 3G) or it s for other stuff?
Even if it's unlock, CMDA on US Xoom isn't compatible with 3G in europe
ok thank you....maybe it s like a blackberry 9630, it s CDMA but it have also the 3G inside it...
Apparently, the component is capable to be compatible with 3G network, but it needs to be flashed...
So, who's gonna do this?

nexus s overseas. are ALL nexus s' really carrier unlocked?

i cannot seem to find a straight answer to whether ALL nexus s' ship carrier unlocked. i live in philippines and the phone is being offered through globe although i plan to use the phone under the smart network. i was under the impression that google shipped all of these unlocked but i'm hearing from few people that it is PROBABLY locked to globe. i also see unlocking services that offer unlock codes for this particular phone on their websites implying that some of them do come carrier locked. can anyone confirm if these are all unlocked or not? thanks
the nexus s is not "carrier unlocked". it never was advertised as. even though 2g(edge) will probably work on any carrier, 3G(or 4G) is carrier spscific. thats why there are different versions of the nexus s. it will work on other networks as long as the 3G bands are the same. the nexus s is bootloader unlocked(well, you can unlock/lock it yourself).
isnt 3g/4g only carrier specific because of the carrier 3g frequency bands? i'm purchasing the phone here in the philippines which uses 900/2100mhz to connect to 3g as it is the standard operating 3g band for all europe and asia. my main concern is whether i will need an unlock code for the phone to even work with a sim card from a different carrier than the one i originally bought it for. 2g will work on every carrier and 3g will work only if that device supports your carriers 3g frequency band but before connecting to either one, the phone has to be unlocked and pass the "sim check"

if the frequency is the same, itll work. no sim unlock code needed. i missunderstood, sorry.
thanks for the quick response. no need for apologies... easy to get mixed up with all this cellphone termanology nowadays =). i just didnt want to say 'unlocked' because it wouldve been too vague. 'sim lock' probably wouldve been a better term in my original post.

None of them have any carrier lock. However you'll likely want the correct phone for your 3g frequencies. You could use the wrong one, you just won't get HSPA

dude! lucky you i found this thread
I bought mine through Globe. I tested officemate#1's Sun sim and had officemate#2 send a text message to that sim while in my Nexus S, and I received it. I also sent a text message back to officemate#2 still using the Sun sim. and she got it back. So I guess we can say it's unlocked
Im not sure if I got lucky getting an unlocked Nexus S (even though there's a small sticker inside the Nexus S that says "this mobile may only be used with a Globe Sim card").
but i've read a lot of forum (since im researching about this because i have plans of using this in Singapore and i hate going through the hassle of unrooting and unlocking) and a lot of them say Nexus S units are unlocked even when a telecom carries it.

Google won't allow any provider to touch the software on the nexus line. So no matter what stickers it has or what the sales rep tells you, the phone is sim unlocked.

oke this is actually a really simple answer.without the bloat information of the other guy's(sorry no offence.nice job participating in the question though)
the only carrier locked nexus.
is the nexus S 4G
cuz sprint doesnt use GSM+/hsdpa+
for its 4G.
the nexus S itself is a GSM phone.and will work on any GSM/HSDPA network.
i imported my nexus S out of the US. and it works fine on my Ben.nl sim(with working HSDPA,3G ect)
Ben.nl being a sister company of tmo-nl
Previously known as Samsung i9020
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100

In korea, that is fine! Korea model is not i9020.

Will I be able to use Nexus S (SHW-M200k) in India
Recently I bought a SHW-200K in South Korea.
Will I be able to use the phone in India.
I wanted a SUPER AMOLED model and I read at many places that Nexus S comes in unlocked versions only.
Is it True?
Does your carrier in India use the same frequencies as the Korean model you bought? Did you at least look that up first?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
I am not sure about the frequency used in India and Korea.
Before purchasing the product in Korea, I had checked if the phone would be working with the SIM card that I use in India. It was working.
The Nexus S variant that released in India says that it supports the following
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
I am trying to explore more about the frequency related things that you mentioned.
I was told that they all come carrier unlocked.

[Q] Unlocked Fido Razr HD w/ AT&T Sim: "SIM not allowed MM #3"?

Got my FIDO Razr HD. Rogers SIM = all is good. AT&T sim = asks for unlock code, which i buy online.
After entering code, phone appears to do a factory reset. During the reboot, a box pops up:
"SIM not allowed MM #3"
Now the phone permits "Emergency Calls Only" with the AT&T sim. Rogers SIM = still good.
When I put AT&T sim into my other phone (HTC desire) it works fine on roaming (rogers network). So I know sim + signal is fine.
Don't understand this error message.
Did I mess up the unlock?
advice appreciated, thanks.
Do you have another Canadian SIM you can try? Bell/Telus etc?

1) i don't have any other sims right now: just rogers + ATT. Next time i am w/ friends I will ask to borrow telus/bell microsim.
2) they were regular sims that were cut down.
3) haven't had a chance to visit USA since posting topic- but when i do, i will test both cards and also visit an AT&T shop to bug them about it.
Is sim corrupted? I don't think so because it works fine in HTC desire. But I guess trying a new one will prove or disprove.

OOI, is AT&T seen as a much better GSM network than T-Mobile in the US?
I was looking at the T-Mo USA site, and there are some amazing "Monthly4G" SIM only plans (e.g. $30/month for 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 5GB of HSPA data).
This seems much better value than AT&T, Verizon and even Sprint! But is their network sketchy compared to the others?

AT&T offers the second largest network coverage behind Verizon. They are also one of the two GSM carriers in the United States, and tend to be more popular with mobile phone enthusiasts because their UMTS bands are more common and used with other regions such as Canada or Australia. T-Mobile does indeed offer excellent value, but they use mainly AWS band in addition to PCS band in selected regions, thus making them the lesser choice for using unlocked phones from outside the country.

It looks like T-Mo mainly use 1900 for 2G and 1700 for 3G, whereas AT&T use 850 and 1900 for both 2G/3G, right?
So if I bought a Canadian Razr HD XT925 and came to the US, would I be able to use T-Mo's 3G network? I am guessing no, since it does not support 3G on 1700MHz.
But then there is a note on that Wiki page saying that they now have a roaming agreement with AT&T after the failed acquisition. So if I forced the phone into "WCDMA only" mode from the test menu, would it then fall back onto the AT&T 3G network?
Sorry for taking the thread slightly off topic

As you have read, T-Mobile did acquire PCS bands from the failed merger with AT&T, but these bands are not as utilized as their 850 MHz band so it's not as widely available as you may think. Some areas might be able to use the 1900 MHz band for T-Mobile 3G, but I would check with fellow T-Mobile users to confirm first before you dive in headfirst. I know that there are T-Mobile users in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that are getting 3G data connectivity with their unlocked AT&T iPhones.
Well T-Mo do daily plays for like 2 bucks right, so I can always try this out before committing to a contract
Do you think AT&T would be the better bet if I am bringing my own device from Europe?
The reason I ask is that I may be coming to a US college for a couple of years, so naturally, I'm planning ahead to see if my phone will work over there

If you're using a device from Europe or Asia, then yes, you have a much higher chance of being able to get 3G connectivity with AT&T. Off the top of my head, Nokia seems to be the only one that tries to actively keep AWS band in their radios.
Hmm, so I did a bit of research on GSM Arena. Seems the Nexus line of devices consistently support 1700MHz 3G (including the Nexus S which I currently have).
Guess who cancelled their Nexus 4 order last week, and opted for a Canadian RAZR HD instead...
Whoops
