Hey guys, i live in brasil and used to have a n4. however i dropped id and the display(not the external glass) cracked, so im hunting a nexus 5.However here in brasil, lg (untill now) have only released the d821 variant(with the correct 4g radio for brasil), but only in 16gb variants, but i want a 32 one, so i will need to import the d820. the question is, since there will be no warranty, should i buy?, the n5 is a solid device?, can i use it without using warranty?, i have a bit of fear since my n4 gone to warranty centre for 3 or 4 times. thanks in advance

Hi mate,
It's better to give protection (warranty) to a device which is quite expensive. We don't know when things can go wrong with these electronic devices. It's not in our hand. So warranty is must. It's my point of view, many people never get a chance to service their device during warranty period and that's good too.

Better to be safe...get a warranty.

Hey guys, does anyone know if the D821 Nexus 5 model, i.e. the one being sold in Europe and other parts of the world, will work in Japan with at least some notable carriers? I'm planning a exchange year in Japan and don't really want to buy a new smartphone for one year, that won't work at home here in Germany then.
Any ideas on that? Here they say it should work, but I'm still unsure.
Thanks a lot
Hello,
I am from India. I am a Software Developer, working in GNU/Linux platform. I am planning to buy a Smart Phone, which has Android OS, so that I can use it also for software development. Which phone is the best for this purpose ? I heard that Nexus5 is having stock android and receive updates faster. Is this the best phone for Software Development too ?
I have been looking at the following smart phones:
HTC Desire 700
HTC One Mini
HTC One Dual.
Lenovo VibeX
Nexus 5 (LG)
Please suggest. THanks.
The phones you've listed aren't even in the same league as the nexus 5

The N5 is the current reference phone for Android. But then you knew that already. If price is an issue then buy an N4, or find a second-hand N5.

Yes, may be. I have just listed the phones available in the local shops here in my place. Nexus 5 is also available, which is around $485.

I understand that N5 means Nexus5.
Even though I am a developer, I am new to the android platform. So I thought of checking with you guys. The price for Nexus5 is okay for me. Are there any different versions for Nexus5 ? (I am not able to post urls, to show you the Nexus5 which is available in India.)
Thanks.
If you have the cash for the Nexus 5 then it's by far the best phone for developers.
As far for models, there is is the D820 for North America, and D821 for the rest of the world.
As far as I know the only different is radio bands:
North America (D820) model:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
Rest of World (D821) model:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20
I would order from Google Play before I went to a shop around you for that price.

Hello fellow mate
The Nexus 5, though pricey in India at 29k, is hands down the most value for money phone currently in the Indian Market. And I think with the given specs it also is reasonably 'future-proof' if an outdated phone is a concern for you.
Nexus phones are to a Developer, like candies are to a child If you're thinking of Android Development, Nexus is the way to go..
And regarding getting the phone, there are 2 versions as already stated in the previous posts. The one you might want to have is the D821 which is the international version. And though ordering it in the USA and getting it here might prove to be cheaper, it is not going to give you warranty. If you want to have a claim over warranty, I suggest buying it through Google Play India itself. And if you're bent on retaining warranty & getting it from USA, I would suggest getting international warranty (I personally do not have a clue on how it's done though)
Wish you luck for your new phone!!
Press THANKS if I helped you

I was not aware of Google Play India. I thought I can order only from Google USA and ship it to India. Also there is an impression that the products sold in USA is having the best quality. I don't know if it is correct or not in the case of Nexus5.
I understand that D821 is the version that works with the bandwidths available in India. D820 works only in North America. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Another question is : I saw some reviews in youtube. They say that Nexus5 is having a problem with Auto-Focus.
( I am not able to post urls. So please goto youtube and type "Erica Griffin Nexus 5". )
What is your opinion about this ?
Thanks.

okay, but it is shown as a big problem in that youtube video that I have specified in my previous post. I know that it won't be as good as a Canon DSLR camera, but I am comparing the camera that comes with smartphones.
Which one is good for an average user 16GB or 32GB, as Nexus5 doesn't have the memory expansion ?

Pretty much depends on your needs.. If you are a heavy user and play games and store videos on your device, 16gb(12.5 user available) will not be enough! I would strongly suggest you to get the 32gig(26.76 user available).

Yes, I think I will go for the 32 gig one. It is just 3k rupees more.
When I started this discussion, I thought Nexus is not a good phone. But now I came to know that Nexus5 is the most hackable smart phone that runs Android.
What is the difference between buying the phone from Google Play India and buying from the local shops in India ? Why did you suggest Google Play India ? Is there any benefit ?

Google covers warranty if you have bought from Google Play which is excellent whereas if you buy from a retailer, LG provides warranty.
Difference is that, Google allegedly provides a brand new device if there's a hardware failure whereas LG will replace the motherboard or the specific part which is faulty.
One more benefit which you get with Google is that they don't care whether you root the device. They replace the device irrespective whether you have flashed a custom rom on it or done anything else with it whereas with LG, you will need to get back to fully stock before sending the device in for repairs!
Besides warranty, the device costs 1k less than the retail stores.. However, if you buy from an online retailer, you can avail ongoing discounts so finally it actually burns down to warranty.
I have bought mine from Croma (Tata Enterprise) and have also bought extended 1 year warranty from them.. So my device is covered for the next 2 years!

okay, So basically it is the flexibility in warranty terms. I think I will order from Google Play India.
Another question that I have is the following. Maybe this one sounds weird, but I have this in my mind for a long time.
I am not new to the mobile devices. I have worked in Pocket PC during 2002-2003 period. It runs WinCE and I was programming in VC++ and .NET in it. We were having the PocketPC devices, but for convenience, we were using the emulators. Thus we were able to test the applications that we develop, without having the device in our hand. This was fine for the Application Development that we were doing. So the question is why can't we use emulators for the developments in Android ? Is it because of the limitations ? Why the programmers don't prefer emulators and always use the Phone itself for testing the software ?
Thanks.
We do have emulators, in the Android sdk. It doesn't help with everything though. There's no substitute for an actual device.

Are you pretty sure about what you just said?
I know about the replacement policy and have 'RMA'd my N5 once, but does flashing a custom ROM really not void warranty?:silly:
P.S.:I had bought the device from Google.....
I have just bought my LG G Pro 2 off eBay for £320 from a UK stocked supply so hopefully will be getting it tomorrow. I am on the Three network so 4G should work fine, although the 800 band 4G won't be supported when they roll it out in the rural areas, but I don't mind that. I currently have an iPhone 5S and iPad, and having previously had all android devices I have just never been able to get into the Apple products, I think they are way over rated, so the iPhone and iPad I have are going on eBay next week, and this LG G Pro 2 will be a compromise over having 2 different devices ). I have read so many positive things about the G Pro 2 and they aren't loaded with stupid technology you don't need, and they are cheaper than Samsung phones. I was looking at the Sony Z Ultra as they are selling them for £250 on Expansys, but I felt it was too big, and many reviewers said the screen wasn't bright enough and the battery isn't removable. So what are your opinions for those of you who already have this phone?

Hi there everyone the phone arrived today, am very impressed, I think the screen is better than my iPhone 5s which is going on eBay next week lol. It blows my iPad air out of the water too, I have always been disappointed with the display on the iPad air. It reminds me of a TN panel on a budget laptop.
I can see this LG G Pro 2 serving me well, its easy to use and I love the UI, which am surprised about as I normally like vanilla stock android. It just seems to work. I can't believe LG hasn't released this phone in the UK. I think it would do very well as far as phablets go. I'll update more as the day goes on.
I haven't seen any FM radio by the way. If you have unlimited data plan just stream it on one of the many radio streaming sites.

I already rooted my D838 and have installed the G3 keyboard as well. But that doesn't give you the trace function on the D838. I searched a bit further and found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531417 where is described how to enable the swipe/trace function. After edit my build.prop swipe is working fine with the LG G3 keyboard. Also G2tweakbox xposed addon works really well on our D838.

Hello all
Does any of you know about the availability of the D837 version in Europe (particularly UK) all I can see on eBay is the D838. My concern is that the D838 only supports 1800 / 2600 on 4G. I am with "Three Mobile" which as I understand mainly uses 800. I can see that the D837 has better frequency support on 2G and 4G which is more useful to me as Three user and also because I travel quite often.
I don't have much information about the F350 model but I can see on eBay being sold from Korea or China (I rather buy from a UK seller), does any one know which frequencies this version supports.
And the last question to the OP (or anyone in a similar situation). I can see that you have bought the D837 and using Three mobile, have you had any issues so far, how does the 4G performs?
Your help would be much appreciated.
LTE bands
I have the F350s, and in the hidden service menu you can choose other LTE bands, and other GSM frequency's then what is listed in the phone spec. For example I'm in the the US on AT&T and LTE band 17 is a option and works great.
this phone is a hidden gem....
I've had my LG G Pro 2 32GB for a couple of months now, it's the best phone I've had since my Sony Xperia Z Ultra 16GB. But now it's time to move on to another device so put it up for sale. It's a shame LG messed up the D83810F update, looking forward to G Pro 3 if LG bother with it.

D837 is rare. i wanted to buy one in HK (the seller advertised it) but it was just a sales tactic to get people in the door. most phones from here will be the F350 or D838.
i use GiffGaff in the UK which is on the O2 network so i'll be on 3G when I come over later this month.
While 3 does use some 800MHz, the official line from them is your device needs to support 1800MHz.
Hey guys,
So long story short, I had my trusty G3 die on me a couple months ago. I then got a hold of a practically new only ever used once G Flex for a couple hundred, and I have to say that in all honesty, it's one of the best phones I've ever used.
But now I've gotten to the point where I need more than a 720p screen, internal storage with no SD Card slot and a better camera. As well as a general improvement in specs. The G Flex 2 perfectly fits what I want in a phone, everything about it is exactly what I want...Theres just one problem.
I had the Europe/International/D855 variant of the G3, but the EU variant of the Flex 2 doesn't come with 3gb ram. Only the US one does. So I'm wondering, would an unlocked US variant work in Australia where I live? Or is there a variant that would be better suited? As long as it's a 3GB/32GB one, I don't mind.
Cheers. Hopefully going to be joining you all soon.
Tl;DR: Will a US Variant work in Australia unlocked? Is there a variant that will work better?

Rather than try and guess what carrier you have or bands that they use vs what the phone supports, I'm gonna direct you here.

TL;DR, i got stolen, they got my nexus 5 but left my akg earbuds, thats how the situation goes here in brasil.
Since that im in a need of a new phone ,however nexus wont sell here anymore(the only ones sold by nexus brand was 4 and 5), so what should i do now? any recomendations?
PS2: if you have a nexus 5 being sold here in brasil, let me know
Bummer! always hate to hear about that happening
I looked around recently and didn't find anything else that fit what I was looking for (that isn't prohibitively expensive). Hard to make good suggestions without knowing what you're looking for, aside from being well supported here on XDA. I got excited about the Oneplus X, until I realized it doesn't have band 12, which is what my carrier is building out LTE in currently (us tmobile). I'm curious to hear what gets suggested.

If i recall correctly, it also wont support band 21, which is what brasil uses.
