Just a simple question... What are the pros of this ROM... I see it's many people use it and I would like to give it a try... But what's the advantage in using it?
Thanks
I've been curious about this as well. I've never really tried one. Some people are reporting CM7 is a touch buggy on the Inspire.
It's still in development but its a work of art. No silly interfaces that hog system resources, just vanilla aosp. A pure android experience.

Some builds have been better than others, that's the nature of nightlies. I last ran 34 and had no issues with gps.

I'm on RC4 at the moment and the GPS is good to go.
Another PRO for CM7 is the amount of themes for it. A lot of different choices out there.
Ok i m running it and i must admit I m IMPRESSED!
The Inspire is my first Android phone so i m not really used to have different 'OS' on it... I used to have a Jailbroken Iphone but it's not quite the same...
Anyways so far the only complaint is that i wasn't able to import all my contacts from the Titanium Backup ... That's annoying
Your contcts should sync with your Google account?
That's what I thought... but they didn't...
Guess I m backing up the CGM restoring the Stock sync the contacts and restore the CGM again........

Did you install GAPPS?
Yeah, you may be fresh on it, but where it really gets fun is when you go into the Cyanogenmod settings and really customize it to how you want it. I got my favorite toggles in the window CM ftw
Should we use RC4 or the Nightly?
Is the rom stable? I've seen some complain about the GPS. That's a pretty important aspect of my day to day life. I wouldn't be able to put up with in not functioning. It would be like being back on my Captivate... /shiver.
What are the other negatives for us CM7 newbs?
I update to every nightly they release. Figure can't hurt and if there are issues I can always go backwards.

Yep... But It looks like my contacts' phone numbers are not sync with my g account...
Anyways I solved the way I planned... Beside that this ROM is awesome... it's super customizable as I wanted it... I always wondered though if a "plain" or "generic" ROM versus a Stock ROM specifically designed for the phone doesn't indeed limit the device... It might be a stupid question but still...

I actually see it the other way around. Without the bloat I think the device runs/looks better. Sense is nice and all but nothing beats vanilla android IMO.

No for sure you are right if we think about all the background processes which aren't running in a ROM like CM... I'm just still trying to figure out the purpose of Sense to be honest...
I mean this is my first android device (I have a nook bu it's not rooted) and I decided to go with android because of its freedom.. now what I m trying to get is "is it like a computer where you have a bunch of hardware parts and you can install whatever SO or you need a proper-fitted software to run the device correctly?"
Oh and another question... where do i get more themes for cm?

Go to Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> *your Google Account* and put a check next to Sync Contacts (and everything else). By default it's not checked for some reason.
Also I don't know if this applies on the Inspire like it does on the Evo, but if you get wakelocks or high system usage, go to Privacy -> uncheck Backup Data to Google (don't worry, your emails and contacts and stuff will still get synced. This is just your list of installed apps).

Search the android themes sub forum that is in the android development forum. There are a good many themes in there that use the theme Chooser that is built into CM7.

Awesome. I'm going to give it a shot once the exchange email is fixed.
Btw, can you post what you did to fix the bootanimation? You mentioned something about trying to install a different boot animation but it fixing the stock one? That would be awesome.
Basically I found it by accident .. most samsungs can't change the boot animation but when you try to install one it repairs the stock one so try bootanimationchangerlite out

Thanks for posting the video up. It was a bit tough to see a lot of the screen from the angle but I got the overall feel. Great looking ROM, I hadn't installed it yet, donated to kejar31 already to help keep the work moving ahead. I will be installing this tomorrow sometime.

Sweet ROM! Even faster than EE4 debloated. Love the stock gb look I've been missing.

I absolutely love the way this rom feels, but I did uninstall it to stock ee4 only because i was having trouble syncing my gmail. there is a simple fix, but you have to do it manually and i haven't fully tried it yet.
adb pull /data/system/sync/android.xml ./android.xml
open the file and mess with where it says "com.android.calendar" and switch it to say just "calendar"
then push the file back when you're done. you should make a backup of this file before you do it.
OR, you could trying pulling this file BEFORE you root and switch to gummycharge. and then push it back in once you see the error with the sync.
i would suggest the latter, but again, i haven't tried either method yet.
let me know what it goes for some of you.
meanwhile, greatjob kejar, looking forward to soft-bricking my phone with many of your new versions of gummy in the future. i am willing to test any beta's you're willing to put out
I have been planning on installing this ROM for about a week now - this is the 1st I have read of the issue syncing GMAIL. This is a deal killer for me as I rely very heavily upon Google Apps sync in my business. Is the fix well documented somewhere?
Thx

With moderate use I've only been getting about 8-10 hours battery life. If I try not to use it hardly, I've gotten it up to 21 hours(like leaving it on while I sleep and then not much while I'm up). I'm on 3G, automatic screen, 15 sec screen hibernate. I had apps updating more frequently and 1 minute/30 sec screen hibernate the first couple days I had the phone, and was only getting about 6-7 hours.

The One S is my mom's first touchscreen/smartphone. She's having a hard time to getting used to the phone. Is there a way to simplify things? I'm planning on rooting it and maybe seeing if there's a stock ICS ROM because Sense is so crowded, way too many options laid out. It's horrible. I actually don't like it myself.
Hey,
you can root it and use the rom cleaner script (in the theme section).
The script will remove all the bloatware and useless sense stuff. Maybe that is what you are looking for?
Trickdroid with the tweakpack gives also the choice to remove a lot of unwanted stuff. (development section)
But the basic functionalty stays the same. You can also just try another Launcher (Like Apex) and look if this works better for her.
it's mainly the Sense dialer and Mobilife app that I want to get rid of.
The Sense dialer isn't very friendly compared to TouchPal and exDialer. But I'm not having her use those because clearing the call will bring her back to Sense's call history.
Mobilife just makes it difficult to keep track of contacts. She has over 300 and I'm syncing them with Google, sometimes a contact shows so many different values to change (mobile #, home #, address, etc). I'd rather have Google take care of this.

Well that's why sense is good. You can just start typing the name of the person instead of the number, and the contract entry comes up.
As far as simplifying it...why don't you just get ADW (or another launcher which lets you edit your screens) and delete all screens but 2 or even 1, if easier. Then put her only needed applications on the dock for her and then lock the screen (again this may be an ADW feature) so nothing moves and gets lost accidentally.... Then let her use it for awhile until she is comfortable, and gradually introduce her to more features as she is ready?

I know i'm newb but I've tried looking/searching and cant see anything labeled ROM CLEANER in the theme section, could someone point me in the right direction as I want rid of the bloat that HTC and Orange have put on, but without losing any of the functionality or stableness of the stock I have as I need my phone working and do not always have good access to the net or a computer for that matter.
Also any other suggestions or tips would also be appreciated as coming from an non tech background alot of this can be quite confusing ^^

You're right, the One S is one of the most advanced smartphones. It's also why I decided to get it to future proof her instead of a dumb phone for the same price.
I played around with exDialer and have decided that this dialer is the easiest app with easy to read colors (after applying the SGS2 theme). I'm actually using it myself. I will have to root her phone to get the dismiss missed calls to work, but that's no problem.
I just upgraded to ICS. So far I am having a few really annoying usability issues. I was hoping someone might have ideas:
1. Things seem more laggy. Ive read enough posts about this to know I need to wait and see for a couple of days and then consider a reset.
2. Power Saving Widget - I am a heavy user of this widget. It fit very nicely on the homescreen before, and you could easily scroll through all the buttons when needed. Now its HUGE and I cannot fit it on my homescreen. Has anyone found a way to resize it?
3. My Direct Dial / DIrect Message Shortcuts. They all got wiped out. Now when I add them back to the homescreen they have annoying labels (like "mobile") across the faces of my contact pictures. Any way to remove them? No point in having the pictures when the word labels block them out completely anyway!
Are you on the official ics 4.04 room or a custom rom? Are you using the the original launcher or something like apex or nova?
If you long press the widget it should let you resize with 4 dots... I'm not using touchwiz so i may be wrong on that

I went from stock GB to stock ICS. I totally agree with your assessment. What were they thinking on the power widget? The old one worked great, you could shift it sideways if you wanted to see the other controls. This half screen thing is crap.
Mine has been much more laggy and I have had TouchWiz force close a lot. Never had Touchwiz FC even once that with GB.
Overall seems like someone left my ice cream sandwitch out in the sun and the whole thing has turned into a mushy melty mess.

Instead of whining , work out your problems and learn how to troubleshoot..
1st,how did you install the stock ICS ?
2nd,did you do a proper wiping and cleaning before that ?
3rd,did you try a stock or custom recovery resets and wipe after the update ?
Stock ICS now on my SR is smooth and I have zero problems , But I admit that GB is a bit faster(smoother) , but just a bit.........

I'm usually pretty good at troubleshooting. Wondering how you know what troubleshooting I've already gone through?
1. Installed from stock GB to ICS via kies. GB was rooted but with stock recovery. Did not un-root before update.
2. Did clear cache before the Kies update. Removed several apps that are easy to reinstall. Didn't and don't want to have to do a factory reset. What else should I have cleaned?
3. After having issues, cleared cache again. Using stock recovery for now.
If you have any ideas how I should proceed, I'm all ears.
Seems wierd but if I have the "agenda" widget on a home screen, things get all flakey.
Thanks.

clean phone is nice, its not as sticky afterwards
to flash stock read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398
After the upgrade via Kies the camera on my Galaxy Skyrocked doesn’t work. There is only a message “unfortunately the camera has stopped” My phone has stock room and its not rooted.
Any advice will be welcome. Factory reset doesn’t fix the bug.
In all fairness, while this forum and its members are great exactly because they can give help like this, I dont think to get a functional OS on my phone I should need to be flashin, rooting or anything like that. Im still a novice and I am not comfortable doing those things. I did exactly as instructed by Samsung Kies and ended up with a phone whose functionality is below par and certainly below where it was. Its very frustrating.
I love all the suggestions, but at this point I just dont feel capable of doing some of these things.
Plus some of the things like the labels across people's faces on my Direct Dial shortcuts is just an ICS feature. Little things like those Direct Dial/Message photo shortcuts were such a cool part of Android, and now with labels across them there isnt even a point in having those pictures. Changes like this are very detrimental IMO, and I still have seen very little regarding the benefits/tradeoffs of the ICS platform...

Its all preference. However you may find some of the sense apps more to your liking. Such as the camera, email, and SMS. You can download Cleanrom DE. It is a desensed ROM. Basically and Aosp look with the sense apps.
Several roms have the option to desense I was just curious if there was other benefits such as better battery life or if removing sense which is known to be somewhat of a resource hog would give a better multitasking experience.
I like sense, but wouldn't want to give up a longer battery life for it.

YMMV, but CleanROM 4.5 DE definitely has slightly better performance and battery life than CR4.5 and stock because of the debloating/desensing.

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted One XL on Telstra.
I am using the stock ROM until i have sussed stable custom ROMs.
I however dont like sense, and am using Apex Pro Launcher.
Im finding that unlocking from sleep & even switching between screens and apps it sometimes stutters.
Sense was actually a smoother experience.
Would this be that sense is still underlying in the background?
If so, can it be removed / disabled whilst on stock ROM?
Any tips on getting the UI to operate more smoothly?

Sense has not gone anywhere... It is still there, you're just using a different launcher. There is an option in Apex to "Keep in memory" in the advanced settings that you could try enabling. You could also try a custom rom like RebelROM, CleanROM, Nocturnal Xi40, or Viper XL, all of which offer a "desensing" option to remove a good chunk of sense while keeping the sweet camera working.

Understood. I know sense is still there. Being new to android im still trying to understand the relationships behind these things.
IE; sense is still running / slowing **** down despite not using it as my launcher?
Are there any good tutorials on sense, what it is, what it does?
Ive searched the forums but cant find anything.
As an android newbie im taking my mates advice and not messing about with any ROMs until i have a better understanding.
Until then i guess i just wanna 'desense' as much as i can on the stock rom.

Sense is more than just the launcher. Its also apps (like camera, Locations, Watch, Stocks, Weather, Music player), widgets, keyboard, and overall theming done by HTC. Plus the Sense framework is embedded in the ROM itself, so that is why Sense components (like the camera) can't be ported to AOSP ROMs. So that is what is meant by "Sense is still there" if you just replace certain components, or use a different launcher.
By replacing the launcher, you won't have the Sense launcher taking up memory (3rd party launchers are often smaller footprint). But really, this phone is powerful enough memory and CPU wise, that the difference in just replacing the launcher is negligible. On older phones (like my old Desire Z) it made a big difference. And the battery drain by Sense is also going to be negligible compared to things that suck up much more power, such as screen on time, downloading/streaming data, etc. So on this phone, its largely about personal preference.

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted One XL on Telstra.

Hey mate I'm on Telstra too. I'm using the ViperXL rom and it's really good! You can have it with or without Sense.

Cheers for that. Understood.
Also, i had a problem in my first month with data.
So i downloaded My Data Manager.
OS services uses more than 50% of my data. Approx 1mb per hour.
I googled it, i got a lot of different responses.
What is OS services and why is it chewing my data, what do i need to turn off?
Also as i was looking online for answers, WhatsApp had jumped from less than 1mb, to 11.1mb in less than 5 minutes.
I havent used WhatsApp in days. Its not possible to change permissions through the app but i have read that i can download an app to manually change specific app permissions?
Timmaa thanks for the heads up on viper, i came across is before but had asked a friend more knowledgable than myself and he said id be better off to wait for CM?

I used to use CM, but I find viper to be excellent. Actually, it's amazing. It's stable and has an arsenal of tweaks. The best one out there IMHO. But that's just my opinion, and your mate has one too. Unfortunately all you'll find on here is opinions, the best way to know is to flash it for yourself and see what you think as everyone has different needs etc when it comes to what they want from a ROM.
Oh but by the way, ViperXL has Sense 4.1 which is so much faster than the 4.0 on stock ROM. Supposedly uses less battery too. And the updated camera4.5 takes much better photos, they're superb!

As for the data I'm not sure, I've been using a data tracker and found some weird results too. Apparent my dialer has been using a lot of data, which I just don't understand.
