My nexus 5 is laggy. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The past week or so my phone has been noticeably laggy. I originally noticed while using Google keyboard. Then noticed occasional but frequent slow touch responsiveness issues. Performed a couple factory resets and even updated to 4.4.3 while continuing to see the problem. Has anyone else noticed issues? Are there any other fixes? Thanks for any tips or tricks.

You might want to try messing with CPU settings if you have root, (changing the governor, etc.), and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I would try a custom kernel like faux123's or franco kernel. If you don't want to try that, you might want to try and measure how much CPU the phone is using when its idle to help diagnose the issue.
I personally use stock 4.4.3 with faux123 kernel with the intillidemand governor and have no problems with lag.

If you do a factory reset and you're running the stock kernel and you haven't modified any system files and you don't have any user apps installed yet, that would sound like a hardware problem to me. If you have any user apps installed one of those might be the culprit. I'm running the stock kernel on 4.4.3 and performance is pretty damn good! And I haven't use a stock kernel in some time. Flashed the boot, radio and system images last night and everything is working fine. If you know how to flash the factory image you could try that, it can sometimes be more reliable than the results you get when doing the OTA. Otherwise... might need to do a RMA.

I've been using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2633978 and stock kernel and I have no lag. I did have a little using stock odex rom from update.. Idk if your rooted & have recovery but if so try a rom.. I'm very pleased with the way this rom I'm on now feels. Its been great. Also not sure what all you have running app wise but reboot a few times a day may help..I'm quite sure you already know that..

Thanks for the help.
I am rooted with CWM. When I first noticed the issues I was on I believe Mahdi with with ROM kernel. I'm sure it's not the ROM since I use Mahdi quite a bit. Performed a few factory resets without resolve. Fastbooted 4.4.3. Without resolve. Unrooted and rerooted. Still lags. I don't recall a specific downloaded app that could have been the issue but did not Google recover this last reset and I think it may be better.
I'll post back after a bit.
Thanks again.

Perform a trim on your flash storage. Hopefully you know how to use adb.
adb shell
am broadcast -a android.intent.action.ACTION_IDLE_MAINTENANCE_START
exit
Wait 30 seconds to a minute.
adb logcat -d | grep -i fstrim
It should now tell you that it trimmed your storage. Reboot and pray that it helped.

(Q) lockup even after GB

Ok so even before GB my phone would lockup and forces me to do a restart just to get it working, and now even after the update that still happens. Am I the only one who is having that problem?
Mine is doing the same things but even more than before GB. It doesn't reboot randomly but it lags (in the browser and sometimes when using the keyboard - I use SwiftKey) and freezes a lot to the point of me having to remove the battery.
I'm new to Android but I think I'm ready to get a custom rom on this. Any advice?

after the GB updates, mine is behaving not that different. It now restarts itself when i plug it in for charging and plug out from charging. Anyone having this kind of problem?
Tmobile tech team is now not doing the exchange any more, instead they are telling me to go to nearest store to investigate the problem.....looks like i'm stuck with this device......
with the GB update, the battery looks good. It does not drain out like it used to be before.
Yeah its really getting on my nerves. lastnight it locked up so much i just switched it off and went on my iphone. i might call customer care and get a replacement and see if that works better.
Any of you try and to a factory reset?
I've been running since the day of the release and the phone locked up only once while left on the dash and got extremely warm.
Every issue I've had has been fixed, the phone runs unbelievably well for me.
yea i factory reset and it still happens. only thing i cant complain on is improved battery life, but what good is that when my POS phone locks up lol.
The lockups are a hardware issue. It still exists even on different Kernels. Just request a replacement.

I've had lock ups before. Flash cwm and start trying some roms. I no longer have any problems and there are really some great roms out for this phone. Just make sure to wipe everything and backup each time to be safe. There's no reason not to try them, much of then are far better performance wise than stock.

What rom are you running? I had lockups with the cm7 nightly and eaglesblood (even more than stock).

[Q] Resolve Sleep of Death

I have an MZ 601 (Asia/Europe Xoom 3G)
I've noticed that it SOD's (Sleep of Death) a lot.
This occurs on stock Rom 3.1
I've tried Tiamat, Launchpad Gemini.
None of the Custom Rom's fix this, and I have not yet been able to come up with steps to reproduce this error. At this Time it seems to be occurring randomly. When it does however it is very very annoying.
Sometimes I can fix it by holding the power button, the screen will suddenly turn on and ask me if Im sure that I want to power of the device.
Sometimes on that dialog if I hit cancel, the screen goes dark and it will appear that it is SOD again.
I know there are various reports on the forum of SODs happening and other people claiming that the Xoom is a GED device and hence does not have SOD issues.
But clearly looking at my device it is certainly prone to SOD issues.
What could I do to find the root cause of the problem?
Could it be a hardware issue? Or is it software?
Does anyone here have a definitive answer for this problem?
Install a stock kernel.

right on, And make sure you do not use an alternate launcher...
My Gtabs used to suffer from this a lot, some kernel where fixing the issue, and using only stock launcher where having the same effect...
As I mentioned in my post stock rom which has the stock kernel and stock launcher had SOD issues. Both 3.01 and 3.1.
At this time the launchpad Gemini 1.30 kernel reduces the occurrance of SOD a lot. As it happens a lot less now. But it still occurs.

I would suggest a factory reset if its still not resolved, take it to the service centre

CM10 wake issue

I know a ton of people are having issues with some of the more recent version of this FM but my problem is a little different. When I go to wake my screen it immediately shuts back off. I'm not sure what the cause might be but its quite frustrating considering it is the only issue I've encountered so far. This can happen multiple times in a row before it decides to finally stay on. Any ideas what might be the cause? I even wiped to make sure it wasn't an app but it still persists. If it helps at all I am on CM version 10-20120815-UNOFFICIAL-ville. If you guys need any other info I'd be more than happy to provide it.

You should consider flashing the latest nightly and see if the problem still occurs. I am running the latest nightly as my daily driver and have no problems at all beside minor wakelocks

Whoa yeah agree with above post. You're on a build that is over a month old and isn't even an official release. Download the newest build from here http://get.cm/?device=ville . You should be able to flash right over your existing rom without losing data, just wipe cache and dalvik cache after you flash. There are many, many improvements since the build you are currently running.
Thanks for the tip guys. I downloaded the latest ROM to my phone some reason I still have the same issue. I'm not really sure what's going on now I did a wipe but that didn't seem to help last time. You guys think an app caused this or is it hardware? I recall something similar happening back on my old phone when I used to mess with the processor speed.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
Have you messed around with the screen brightness and accidentally set lowest brightness to 0 ?
I once did that....
I wish that was all but sadly I have no clue what the issue is.

[Q] Franko Kernel r37- Heating issue

Hi guys!
Flashed the latest r37 franko kernel and my phone's min temp is stuck @ 60 degrees and raising from that point on. Anyone facing this issue?
And lost the smoothness in games and other GPU intensive apps. Per-App Setting doesn't seem to be sticking too...
Any similar experiences or is it just my phone...
Reverted to r36 for now..
Thanks in advance!
Try re downloading and re flashing. No issues elsewhere anyone has mentioned
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Thx for the suggestion...
Did exactly that...Ran the fresh r37 for three days and tried re-flashing after a second download attempt.
Ran it for like two days...still the issues persisted..
Strange. Try the linaro version in the other development forum. It's pretty much the same apart from has faux sound so doesn't have the annoying audio clipping issues

[Q] Google search update lag

I have had a look online to see if others are having my problem but can't seem to find anything on it so thought i would ask here.
A few months back i created a thread regarding lag issues on my nexus 5 more specifically app drawer opening/closing lag, well after flashing back to stock, unrooting and factory resetting a few times the lag was still there UNTIL i turned off auto update apps and the lag dissapeared so i figured it must be an app so after a while of trying to find out which one it is i found out it was the updated google search causing the lag for some reason so i uninstalled the updates and the lag dissapeared and now i have had auto update off for a couple of months.
Well now i want to turn auto update all apps on again and update the google search app to get ok google again but again after updating the lags back so had to delete it once again, anyone got any ideas on why this is happening? I have already tried rebooting the phone which didn't make a difference so i wiped dalvik and cache again this didn't make any difference
Bump

Your post is long, and confusing. Are you experiencing lag when opening app drawer? Are you saying that updating any Google services through the play store causes your phone to lag? Can you tell us what's your phone set up?

Yes the lag is there when opening and closing the app drawer. The only google service that causes this is the google search app, when i uninstall it through play store it just uninstalls the updates so i lose the ok google hotword feature but the lag is completely gone and the phone is buttery smooth, as soon as i update it again the lag starts.
I'm on a rooted nexus 5 4.4.2 running a stable release of faux kernel that's it everything else is stock

is it possible for you to recreate the lag again, and check your processes to see if there's anything running in the background that might cause the lag.

The lag is still there as i have updated google search so the app draw is still stuttering. I checked running applications on settings but there doesn't seem to be anything abnormal but i don't really know what i am looking for though

I'm referring to any apps, specifically from Google, that's running in the background. It might be taking up a large chunk of your processing power or downloading something, causing your phone to lag. Are you running Dalvik or Art?

Can you switch to ART and see if the problem persist? If you are not comfortable switching, you could flash the Dalvik+Bionic library optimization. I found it very smooth, compared to stock Dalvik.
Also, scale down Windows animation and Transition animation to .5x in developer options.

That's a crude way of putting it, but yes. In a way we're all trying to mask our phone's shortcomings. Seeing that even though we all have the same phones, yet some are better than others, some encounter more problems than others, some have better battery life than others. You can't come in here and expect your phone to be perfect with no problems. Sometimes we find a fix, sometimes we find a workaround. It's hard to pinpoint the problem without much in-depth troubleshooting, but if it "fixes" the problem, than that should be sufficient for now right?
(damn I feel like a philosopher)

But since they are all mass produced shouldn't they all produce the same results? I mean they aren't exactly living beings like us some being more successful than others lol so would you say mine is actually a faulty device? I've just switched to ART so will test it a little, i didn't switch earlier due to ART not being fully stable and ready not sure if that's changed now

If that was the case, this whole forum would not exist. Every phone is different, even if they're the same model. We tweak it and mod it to our liking, and we never stop trying to bring it to its optimum ability.
Yes ART is unstable to some apps and mods. Before rooting my phone, I was on ART for a few months on stock. It was very smooth, and surprisingly didn't have any incompatibility issues. After root, in order to have Xposed, I had to switch to Dalvik. There was definitely some lag issues. I also experienced them with the app drawer, similar to yours. But to circumvent that, I flashed the Dalvik+Bionic libraries and it was as smooth, if not smoother, than it was while I was on stock ART.

So your saying that let's say we both bought the same phone in this case the nexus 5 and when we turn it on it's brand new so nothing installed on it yet but one phone has lag but the other is as smooth as butter would you consider that perfectly normal or would you think something is wrong?
I have been running ART for a few hours now and unfortunately the lag is still there, once i uninstall the google search app updates it goes back to being as smooth as butter same as when i was on dalvik but like dalvik once i install it again the lag comes back
