[CONCEPT] Scrolling Side Launcher - another multitasking concept for Android - General Topics

Hello xda-community,
I NEVER RECOGNISED THIS, BUT OF COURSE THE TITLE SHOULD BE "SCROLLING SIDE LAUNCHER", NOT "SCOLLING".
first, I wasn't sure where to post this, so I chose the general section. If a mod thinks there is a better place for this, please move the topic =)
Now, what do I imagine under "Scrolling Side Launcher"?
There are many approaches to achieve multitask on mobile devices, most famous ones are Samsungs Multiwindow/Pen Window, LGs Qslite/SlideAside/Splitview, Paranoid Androids Halo and last but not least the stunning xposed module by Android developer @zst123, XHalofloatingwindows.
However, none of these seems to be very useful when you are on a smartphone, on a tablet with a wide screen they can be useful.
On smartphones, its always a switch between this window and that window, moving another window to the front, maximising, minimising, closing, reopening and so on.
So, I thought about a way how to avoid most of these complications and perhaps even make multitask feeling a little bit more smooth and natural.
But, how could you achieve a fluent experience when you have several apps on screen? I thought about the Android notification bar, where you can pinch notifications to enlarge them or to minimise them. And this was how I had the idea for this concept:
I used Samsung Touchwiz (most of you hate it, I know) as a base:
1. A new icon on the homescreen (replacing the MyMagazine icon and app, because who in the world really needs that one?), so from the homescreen you just need to swipe to the right to enter SSL:
2. A new icon in the recent apps menu (this would either need a new apk, an xposed module (?) or the whole thing be part of an own rom with this one, you can get into SSL from every app:
3. Swipe an app from the recent menu to the left to add it to SSL:
4. Next image shows SSL without any app added, you can add any app by tapping the "+" symbol:
5. If you add an app, it's displayed in fullscreen, but you can pinch (tap with the fingers on the borders) it to minimise it to any size until it switches to minimised view...:
6. ...and of course the other way round:
7. If you have more apps pinched out, you can scroll thru the apps. The "active" app (the one you interacted with last) is highlighted with white borders:
8. When you scroll up, the titlebar hides itself, when you scroll down, it appears again:
9. In the menu, you can choose between different options; in the settings you can set different layout options.
10. Swipe again to the right to open the sidebar, in which you can see all apps added to SSL. Active apps have a thumbnail of the current content. In the Sidebar you can change the apps order or close an app (swipe away)
or even more like in slim recents:
Edit: important to mention is that of course the app size would scale down, otherwise it would look as awkward as in my pics (just made them with paint.net) and interaction would be bad.
That's it for the moment, I'll maybe add/change some aspects. So, what do you think?

Just edited two of the concept to be a bit more like material design. How do you like?

The concept is nice, looking forward to try it

Subscribed anyway cause it's a really nice idea!
Also, it looks a bit like slim recents, but you can actually interact with the apps (like xhalo), rather than just see a thumbnail of it.

Yep, I took this sidebar concept from slim recents
And I like that you can minimse the thumbnails in slim recents. That's useful
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

The sidebar looks like Fancy Switcher:
By the way, you asked for a theme like this one (latest touchwizz) back in the early development of Fancy Switcher, right ?

Yes, I am a fan of touchwiz.
The sidebar is a concept you find in many apps (slim recents, fancy switcher, switchr)
It's a popular feature since its easy to handle.
First, I thought to design it like you can do all this directly in the launcher (swipe apps away, change positioning) but there would be two major problems with that: First, it would interfere with the normal gestures of the app, and second there would be a problem of space when you want to switch app position because you cannot see so much apps on the screen at the same time like in a sidebar. This would be against the concept of simple handling I want to achieve.

I love this idea
I was considering yesterday of making an Xposed mod to put app icons in the recents panel, then having a drawer to access all apps
Your idea is much better but also much harder to make
I think I'll make my one then add features from your one over time
Just to clarify, in your concept, does recents panel become the home screen?

No. Homescreen is still there as normal. The complete mod is meant to be a "sidelauncher"

Great Idea this Side Launcher!
Would it be an app to install or a patch to merge with the source for compiling?

As I am no dev I cannot say it I imagine it as an xposed module or an app. Something that you could install on every ROM

Yep...And really sad that maybe no one will develop it, since it would be a nice app for those that won't get an Android L update.

I think with Android L this concept will be more doable than ever before.

I had that feature in the prior versions. I decided to take it out because it was a bit inconsistent, since the android API post 2.2 (froyo) doesn't garentee the app you're trying to kill will be immediately terminated at your request.

Thanks for the feedback. My primary focus has been on feature completeness, and usability.
For the future updates, I plan to focus on polishing the app, both at the runtime/memory, and at the UI level.
Windows previews is a big one in my todo list. However it's pretty complex, and I'm still trying to get it to work. It's definitely possible though given the amount of screenshot apps in the android market.
Any hints/help regarding how to implement screenshot like functionality is definitely appreciated.

Is it possible to add a 'favourites' pane? That would be top of the iceberg. Really love it being overlay of current app

Wow, that's quite amazing. Fantastic job.
Great job, can you make it so that you can close the open apps by swiping them off the screen just like in web os.

Sidebar Lite | Sidebar Pro
My current experience with Sidebar as of now.
There are not as many little bugs, most are limitations in Android itself, but nothing that affect myself.
Those limitations being, the notification glitch, without having the notification android kills it.
Apps take longer to launch when current app is your default launcher.
The look is amazing, originally I was looking for a unity-esque side launcher, but this is so much more.
First, it looks cleaner than unity, by coping the aesthetic of windows 7.
Also it allows for task management, which I find conflicts with the Android's built in task manager and appears to duplicate app instances, but overall looks and functions pretty well.
You simply slide the icon off the bar to kill the app, or touch the icon to naturally open it.
A plus with the pro version, is that you can pin as many apps as you'd like. Plus there's the ability to pin widgets such as home, pause song, wifi and many more toggles. Currently shortcut to activities have been removed, but with the new, better caching system, I have a feeling they'll be added back
The scrolling of the sidebar could be more fluid; as in keep up with my finger better, but overall performance was fine and the app itself has a very small resource footprint.
This app has come a long way, and I can't wait for themes and easy icon rearrangement.
Good luck Mohammad.

I'm not sure why this isn't getting more attention, but this is the best side launcher app yet! You need to add the ability to manually change the icons (unless that's already there in the pro version...) and incorporate a multitasking function, where it showing running apps with favorited apps, however the running apps are highlighted to show they're running, much like Unity for linux. Great app nonetheless!
EDIT: I found a significant bug on the free version. When you add the max allotted apps, then delete remove an app, it won't allow you to add anymore back, even if you remove all of them, it just says you need to upgrade.

They have a completely different UI and feature set. That's like asking what's the difference between Nova Launcher and iOS. Sure they both have the same task but they're surely different. Try them both (they're free) and you'll feel the difference.
The best one out there.. Period.
I've tried various quick-launch apps over the past few weeks. Stumbled onto this just today. This is by the the best one available.
Very minimal layout, & customizable. Will be buying the paid version for sure. Kudos. :good:
One suggestion - can we get customizable animation time. Currently it's a bit too slow and without the animation its just too dull

Would be great if apps could have this layout
Just purchased the Pro version, and so far very nice! If you're taking suggestions however, i'd like a way to disable the notification, as well as a way to move the icons around into whatever order you like (rather than having to delete and reinstall to your liking). It would also be nice to be able to position the icons where we want as well, say from the bottom up, rather than the top down. But great job overall!
thanks

Here is an old version of the app. Is this better than Sidebar as it is on the Market?
Major differences:
- Uses a tab
- Solid color
- Less Settings
- Sidebar tears at screen edge when docking by draggin the tab
- Some lag on the dragging on lower end phones
Try it out (SUPER OLD VERSION): https://www.dropbox.com/s/pltw4vui9e2gbpl/Sidebar.apk and tell me if it is better or worse than the released version.

No it's definitely worse. The solid color is terrible in my opinion. It isn't as smooth, and also the constant tab is dreadful. Believe me you're heading in the right direction, don't go backwards.

Sword Art Online launcher - an anime inspired menu system.
SAO Launcher is a menu that can be opened anywhere by swiping down from the top left corner. Get access to sms, contacts, apps, and more regardless of which app you're currently in. Ads can be disabled with a $4.99 In App Purchase inside Options, which also unlocks some additional features. v2.3.1 is for Android 2.3, which is no longer supported. v2.6.1 is for 4.0+.
The Sms Extension module lets you reply to sms inside the app and (optionally) receive popups when you get an sms. Just install it and SAO Launcher will do its thing.
The KitKat Theme changes the entire look and feel of the app, including the images and sounds. More themes and extensions can be found inside the Store in SAO Launcher.

Can you reproduce it? ie: If I open this orb, it always crashes? Or it always crashes after 3sec?
If you run CyanogenMod (or a derivative) or if you have access to adb, I could immediately fix it with a stacktrace. CyanogenMod has an option in Developer Options to add "Power menu bug reports" and adb... I forget how to do it with adb, but it's 1 line command to save it to a txt file.
Uploaded a new apk - Internet permission error should be fixed and the app should stop appearing in Recent Apps (so you dont accidentally Force Stop it).

The fading isn't correct in landscape view for Settings and Apps when on top or bottom of the list
Also does the Log out button have any purpose (Because it does nothing for me)? As far as I can remember in SAO the Log Out button disappears (In the first 15 episodes when they are stuck inside SAO). The Log Out button could close the SAO launcher (Not killing the launcher itself).
Well, the fading is right in that you can scroll up/down towards the fade. It's a bit annoying with just one entry visible, though. I'll likely make the list expand to fit the entire screen, but it involves rewriting the arrows (which expect to be centered).
Update's been pushed that fixes the half-circles, fixes a crash in Options, removes the app from Recent Apps, and pre-caches some files so that it's not slow on launch (especially if you have a lot of apps and/or contacts).

I'm sorry. I wish it were possible too. I think the lines of code unavailable in 4.0.4 are "withStartAction" and "withEndAction" for animations. Basically, I can't tell the app to do something before or after an animation ends (like make the orbs visible before they start falling into place or close the app after they zoom off).
I might try back porting some of it, but it's painful having to write code twice to provide support for older devices (even though 4.0.4 isn't that old!)

Have been playing around with this for a bit and so far it's working superbly. Thanks, dev. ???
Only thing stopping me from fully switching from Glovebox to this is I'd like to be able to customize the icons in the applications list/not have them. I'll just have to have both on my phone then!

dev, you should have built this app half a year ago. Now that I don't have an android phone anymore... Though, it looks awesome. Great job.
Is there a way for the menu button to show most recent apps or all the apps?
Really cool app. Any plans on adding widget support?
Also, a direct shortcut to settings would be nice under the options tab. Persistent notification options would be good too. Great work!

This looks good. More feedback once tested for a longer time. Hows the battery usage
EDIT:
The app responds well. No additional battery drain. Only since times the hotspot does not respond. Quick restart of the app helps, I am sure next versions will be stable too. Good job Dev.
@leducbao any possibility of GB support?

Ok, could you consider to add option for setting the height of trigger. Now its to height for us( who use pie control) to call pie.

Same on nexus 4..created a custom panel for those apps which don't fit in any of the collections
---------- Post added at 11:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:16 PM ----------
Can you please increase the number of recents shown in recents panel. The default Android recents has so many apps and whereas quickr shows only a handful.
Sort of the app which I might have tried to do as a plunge into Android dev-ship
Right now I have Homeflip (BTW, also can be a bit slow but is lean and mean, I mean tiny. LIke that!!) set as only showing recent apps. Homeflip, as well as most all the launchers out there, have forgotten all about shortcuts. Homeflip is a launcher overlay, becomes the default launcher with a chosen fallback. Makes trying out launchers very easy and convenient.
I have the Xposed swipe-back app to close running apps. Very useful.
I tried an app, do not remember which one, to swipe through recent app screens (instead of snapshots or icons). Useful but not well implimented, more problems than it was worth.
I see Quickr as a stand-in for Ubuntu-like functionality because it has four possible edges. However, really need partial edges so as not to interfere with normal phone function! Then possible up to 8-12 alternatives though I would not use them all.
One edge for recent apps. I prefer a column of icons or small snapshots (take a lot more RAM).
One edge for contacts, showing pictures, info, and/or/another edge for media? Replacing Homeflip and others.
Is this app an launcher-overlay or "separate" app like most others of this type?
Functionality in which I am interested, will work?

This is not only a launcher-overlay app, but also any-app overlay. You can swipe in from edge when you are actively in any app.
This is quite brilliant, my new favorite app for multitasking. The only bugs that I've noticed are:
1) sometimes apps and shortcuts disappear from my custom panels. I've had my Hibernate Now (greenify) shortcut disappear from one panel, and also the Snapchat app disappeared from another panel. I'm not sure what would cause something like this, and it isn't something I can reproduce for a log. Temporary solution is just add the missing app/shortcut back to the panel it disappeared from. Doesn't happen very often either, just every once in a while I'll notice there are less apps and realize one is missing.
2) For some reason, Google+ doesn't show up in my list of applications. I've checked the bottom of the app list, as there are 5 or so miscellaneous apps that show up there out of alphabetic order, and it's not there either. I would really like to add Google+ to my social panel, it's one of the apps I use most.
3) Not really a bug, and no offense intended, but those folders are pretty ugly. Something like Nova's folders with just a dark circle or square would look much better.
Other than those couple of things, Quickr has been super convenient. The couple of hiccups I've had are not deal-breakers, I will continue using it. Awesome job, can't wait for more updates!!

(PSA) Samsung's "Good Lock" gives you stock-like statusbar (and more)

The app is available on the Galaxy App's app market and works on Samsung's touchwiz android 6.0 (some say you can side load the apk on touchwiz android version 5.1 and it will still work; app won't appear on the galaxy store unless you are on android 6.0 though)
It, of course being by samsung, DOES NOT require root and can be uninstalled if you don't like it.
Just look up "Good Lock" on the samsung app store (Galaxy Apps); it will say "update" instead of download since it's an update to the System UI, and your phone should reboot.
Confirmed working on tdunham's deodexed MM rom. Should work without any issues on stock none-rooted.
Here's a video:

(pokedex animations not included )
Just tried it. Tried it for a few minutes. And uninstalled it. Too many bright colors for my taste.
Colors can be changed by going into the Good Lock settings, then selecting the routines menu and editing default. Darker colors are on the left while lighter is on the right. If only the recents menu could be changed so easily.
Also the bokeh is ****. Not only does it cause lag upon opening the drawer, but it looks incredibly ugly. It's nowhere near as well implemented as iOS and even if it was, it wouldn't fit with material design.

I was happy once I figured out I could change the color from the butt ugly purple they started me on. Now I'm back closer to the stock MM color.
Your second point, are you talking about the app drawer on the lock screen? I didn't personally like that. You can disable it, though. If you go into routine just like changing the color and at the last setting page it has a little screen with the sections for clock, notifications, and app drawer. Uncheck the app drawer and it is gone.

I was referring to the notification drawer. Though I also dislike the other areas that Samsung has shoved bokeh (blur) into, like the power menu.

Ohh OK, I understand now. I don't mind the blur too much and haven't noticed any lag from it yet. Overall, I think it is an improvement on TW...even with the crappy recents.

Yeah for the most part I'm happy with it, just hate the recent screen.

I like the app but even though it allows you to NOT use location services it brings up this every time no mater how i configue it the only other thing i dont likevis it removes the "cards" fron your recent apps and turns it into a list.

I am having a problem with this app. I have started a thread in the Q/A here. Thanks for any help in advance.
A waste. Uninstalled it.
I just want the lockscreen (with my own bg) and i want to keep my theme the way it is. We should be able to pick and choose what we want to enable and disable.

You can set your own lockscreen background with Good Lock. After you install Good Lock it will change but if you go and set your lockscreen background again, it will stick.
Is it just me or while using good lock, and when you go into the recent apps and you hit clear all it doesn't clear all and it just clears apps that are visible in the recent apps menu?

Any idea why it doesn't appear in the samsung store on MM 6.0.1 ? Living in Bulgaria, just stating in case that's why.
