[Q] If I Root Only? Do I lose warranty? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a Moto G for like the past 4 months and wanted to ask
If I ROOT Only would I lose my warranty?
Could I go back? or anything like before?
I simply want to ROOT it but do NOT want to add Roms or custom things.
Thank You

You need to unlock your phone's bootloader before rooting, so you will lose your warranty.

Can't the stock firmware image be modified to include the 'su' binary and the SuperSU app, and then be flashed through fastboot? (Or whatever the "normal" way is)
I don't really know if its possible, but seems logical

@op no way to retain warranty after unlocking BL atm.

For any sort of modification to work, bl needs to unlocked afaik. So not possible :b

I think you didn't get my point.
I meant "modifying" the stock firmware image which is available here on XDA somewhere (I think) to include the "su" binary and SuperSU app, and then flashing that through fastboot (or whatever method).
Flashing the stock firmware doesn't need unlocked BL, AFAIK.
Oops! Looks like it does
Guess I'll have to unlock the BL ultimately :/

Firmware images are signed, and if you modify them, they'd need to be resigned. Motorola's signature isn't able to be duplicated yet.

Anyway, just requesting the key from Motorola, voids the warranty.
If you are in the eu you should still have a warranty no matter what moto say but I don't know if anyone had tested it.

No they don't. Cm can reinstall its recovery and you'll just lose root when you OTA.

See http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/root-unlocking-bootloader-t2820628
But on XNPH30O it is not achievable (unless something else was changed). I recommend just unlocking your bootloader, it does no harm unlocking it and having your bootloader unlocked. I've used this analogy in other threads and I'll say it again,
On a OPO (or Nexus Device or HTC), we have a way of unlocking our bootloaders without the need of a exploit to gain root access (e.g. Samsung, LG, etc). Think of it this way, since we have a OPO... you're pretty much given a key (fastboot oem unlock) to unlock the doors to your house. Don't make it difficult on yourself and break into your house through your windows when you can just unlock the door with the key you have.
Just unlock the bootloader, flash custom recovery, flash SuperSU.
You can flash OTA updates through a custom recovery of your choice.
Thanks I just rooted my opo ....thanks again

Not to my knowledge. And even if it is, you can just switch it back to dalvik. Only takes 1 minute to switch between run times.

Should I root my MOTO G 2015? To get more storage?

Hello everyone! I didn't want to root my new MOTO G 2015 but I need more storage if I want to install more app's, I saw with root permissions we can transfer full sized app's to the sd, is it true? and how? I've seen already a guide how to root moto g 2015, but know I want to know how to transfer full sized app's to the SD and then i'll decide if I want to root or not.
Do you think I should root? It will be better If i want more storage?
Is it safe? The Lollipop will be automatically installed after the root? I have no need on install other Android OS.
Thank you!
Hey! I can see that you are new here, but rooting your phone isnt gonna delete anything of your data if you search on this forum for Link2sd than you will find a tuturial for how to do that. But if you dont understand any of the words "Brick" or "fastboot" you should do some research first.
success!

Hello HelpMeruth! And thank you for replying my question!
Here's what I already searched this is , i've got alot of information already but the information I got says my phone will be formatted I think. Brick I remember that word a long time ago when the PSP Scene I know it's not android but I remember it, it's like having a non funcional phone, bricked.
Here's the guide I saw: (I can't post links, if you can search on the youtube : "Moto G 3rd Gen(2015) - How to Root - Unlock Bootloader & Custom Recovery") and tell me if that guide will not brick or format my moto g 3
Any chance of getting bricked? It will remove my SIM Service? I have the phone just for a week and the warranty it's 2 here's, If I root the warranty goes out, is it worth rooting?
Thanks for the reply sir and yes i'm really new in the android scene, just came from the iOS one, got mad at iOS
I can confirm that your phone will not be formatted
The word brick means that your phone wont start up.
Its a gamble for everyone to root, so when you are gonna do it try just booting Twrp. That is the safest way to test it.
But strart with unlocking your bootloader thats already a big step for rooting (unlocking bootloader will format your data!)
If you got any questions send me message!
Its your choise to root or not

You shouldnt be able to root with a locked bootloader, i quote: 'A locked bootloader locks write access to several partitions like the system partition. This is the reason why rooting is not able without unlocked bootloader.' found on this site https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-main-differences-between-Rooting-and-Unlocking-Bootloader
that tool just has a build in fastboot/adb and automate things for you.

Installing cyanogenmod will still keep you on 5.1.1 your device will just be modified (custom tweaks etc..) so if you have to unlock your bootloader it will void any warranties you have. If you don't have one or don't care just make sure to read carefully as you sound relatively new to CM and you don't want to brick your device.

Can I root the Moto G3 with an app like KingRoot?

Hi peps,
I just switched from my crappy HTC One X to my new Moto G3 and I'm in love!
I don't really want a custom ROM, but I'd like to undervolt this babe. But since a root requires unlocking the bootloader = voiding the manufacturers warranty, I don't really wanna do that..
I've bought it over Amazon and I live in the EU, so I technically still have the retailer's warranty and Amazon would replace it without a hassle, but yeah.. it's new and all.
But I know there are apps like towelroot, KingRoot and what not, do they work with the Moto G3? I'm on 5.1.1.

Thanks for this unnecessary input. :good:
On previous versions of Android there were exploits that allowed rooting the phone without unlocking the bootloader, which means you could keep your warranty and I just asked if it works on the current Moto G3 with Lollipop 5.1, why do you have to be such a smartass? It's a normal question, why can't I have a normal answer?
I used to root in one click in just one method on my previous phone xperia sp but i dont know this phone have any toll which will work or not?

Being a smartass is kind of my thing.
You're afraid to unlock your device's bootloader because you'll lose the warranty, but you're perfectly fine with risking the security of your device by rooting it, right? Seems odd to me, but whatever.
Generally speaking, both KingRoot and TowelRoot are used on devices where using those two methods are the only way to root those devices.
Unlocking the bootloader will have no ill effect on your device other than voiding the warranty, and, if you're worried about voiding your warranty, you shouldn't be trying to modify your device.

Just unlock the bootloader and flash supersu for root.

Who said I'm afraid of unlocking the bootloader? Who said I never unlocked the bootloader of other phones before?
I just don't wanna lose my warranty in the first two or three months, in case my phone breaks unexpectedly, I also don't plan on using custom roms, I just want the root features so I can undervolt like I said and IF I could root it permanently without unlocking the bootloader, why not?
I'm not worried, it would just be convenient to have root without losing the warranty, that's it.
As far as I know you may be able to do it search kingroot in Google then download the apk and install it then open in and follow the instructions

If you want the best of both worlds (root & warranty), then go buy a Nexus. Motorola drew a line in the sand as to what they will support, while still empowering owners with the option to unlock the bootloader.

Towelroot is exploiting a bug in the Linux Kernel in order to root a device. This bug was already fixed in June 2014.
On all Kernels with a later build date Towelroot will most likely not work.
For sure it will not work on the Moto G3 with a kernel build date more than one year after this bug was fixed.
Thanks!

It's probably been answered already but those exploits are security flaws with the SE Linux system and so with each release of android these have been patched, by 5.1 these security holes have been fixed and now by locking the bootloader
It's like just locking down and modifications to the system partition so unfortunately you can't root without unlocking, unless you have android versions lower down

What version of TWRP did you use coz I know there were some bugs on the moto range with TWRP 2.X.
I would completely wipe device using stock recovery, including dalvic/cache/data everything just to be on the safe side, then download the TWRP zip to your computer and flash it on using ADB.
Boot up normally and move the superSU zip from the link to your phones internal storage. Then reboot to TWRP, select install and pick the zip file.
superSU.zip:
http://dl-1.va.us.xda-developers.com/3/6/5/5/4/0/1/BETA-SuperSU-v2.62-3-20151211162651.zip?key=u0OeGV4-4s02KJXqrXJ-gg&ts=1466705675

Perhaps you can offer wisdom on this? I rooted my Moto G 3rd Gen once, wrecked something and had to go back to factory, then try to reroot again. Problem. No matter what I do in setting the device back to factory, the bootloader stays unlocked and reads the system software as "modified" which then seems to bork installing SuperSU. I install SuperSU via twrp and it goes fine, no errors, but when I reboot the system is lost in a loop of the "bootloader unlocked" screen.
So I cannot RE-lock the bootloader (ala setting the phone back to true factory) and after I flash SuperSU the phone refuses to successfully bootup.
Any aid? Ideas?
I had failed to backup my phone the first time with twrp and so to set to factory I downloaded the stock retail xml.zip for my phone and reflashed the entire thing via fastboot. Reinstall twrp, and try to root and the endless boot loop begins.
So I came to this thread to look into the possibility rooting my phone via another means that MIGHT work.

Rooting will absolutely void your warranty... really, rooting has nothing to do with it, unlocking the bootloader will immediately and irrevocably void your warranty with Motorola, as far as the Republic Wireless warranty goes I did not read their policy but it probably doesn't matter. Actually, just going through the steps on Moto's website and confirming the acknowledgement and getting the unlock token from them voids your warranty, the actual state of your device is not relevant.
Other than that, it clearly states your device will continue to work...
What's Republic's stance on rooting and user modification?
While you will still be able to use your rooted or modified phone on Republic's service (provided you are not abusing our service or otherwise violating our Terms of Service), you will void your Motorola and Republic warranties on your phone and be unable to receive any future support assistance for that device.

There is no working 'one-click root' or other software similar that I would recommend for any modern Moto device... do it manually. Unlock the bootloader, boot, not flash, TWRP and backup your system (for an emergency restore point), flash TWRP after you have successfully gotten a backup and moved a copy from the device, then flash SuperSU. 5.1.1 doesn't have any real SuperSU restrictions but if you upgrade to 6.0+ there is only a specific versions that works to root with (2.62-3 I believe).

Sorry, I am not following you... your service has nothing to do with your Android version, you could have Eclair or Zagnut, flash Ubuntu, or tie a string between two cans, and your provider doesn't care as long as your have a valid SIM and talk the same protocols and frequencies.
That being said, you could flash a similar factory image (it's an XT1540, right?) or custom ROM to get to 6.0 if you want, and it would work, it just doesn't remove a carrier lock... but 5.1.1 is very solid and capable Android version and works exceptionally well on the Moto G 2015, you can just keep it and root and go about your day with no worries either.
Because you seem so hesitant, I assume you haven't rooted before... what are you hoping to accomplish by rooting your device? If there isn't a specific reason or goal, then you shouldn't root.
My model is a XT1548 and I have rooted my old Nexus 7(2013) with the Nexus root toolkit. My goal for rooting my moto g is to get the hidden LED light feature and to get Xposed modules.

Ah, the CDMA version... the red-headed step-brother of the GSM siblings.
5.1.1 is fine, you can flash a custom ROM if you want, but staying on 5.1.1 will work just fine. If you get an OTA later to 6.0+ just ignore it and do not accept it, it will not work. You would have to revert to stock first (remember that initial TWRP backup I mentioned before???) , then update, then reroot, etc. again.
The root method is the same as I described above, it will work fine. Xposed will work, but be aware that the 'hidden LED' is pretty worthless... it is hard-wired to the charging circuit, it is not possible for it to work unless the device is plugged in to power.

Working on TWRP. After which root would be a piece of cake.
I have no idea who else is on TWRP.

TWRP is done. Rooting made me into bootloop. I ran into issues when trying to flash back stock(I flashed the wrong firmware). Could anyone upload the NON-HLOS.bin and fsg.mbn alone?

It is very simple.Just have to get the code from Motorola.I have successfully unlocked the bootloader and Installed TWRP recovery too.Has anyone tried flashing SuperSu on G4 plus.
Here i found a guide they mentioned that it may brick the device.

i got moto g4 not plus. but i can confirm that root will brick it for sure. TWRP works fine with backup-restore.
Does anyone know Motorola's official position on whether unlocking the bootloader also voids the warranty?

Not in every country though, in my case when I had hardbricked my 1st Gen Moto G I was given a replacement despite me unlocking the bootloader

Probably a replacement is decided on a case by case, so don't always depend on it. Also, this topic is from July...

Well it was because they had a faulty OTA 4.4.4 that when you upgraded from 4.4.2 it would hardbrick devices that unlocked their bootloader. Though I never told them that, just said that it just turned off during charging and after that it wouldn't turn on.

So they didn't know it was unlocked and didn't check. You're a lucky guy

Actually they could easily if they wanted to even if my phone was dead, since when you request unlock code from Moto they void your warranty even if you didn't use it to unlock the bootloader which means that the service centre might be able to check if I requested an unlock code(some sort of database maybe? Idk) but they didn't so yeah pretty lucky.
