[Q] Enrcyption Support for ClockWorkMod Recovery

Hello,
i have just installed the official stock ICS 4.0.3 Rom to my Nexus S and everything was really fine... until i tried to root it. As someone who tries to take security seriously, i immediately encrypted the device using the tools provided by ics (works ok).
but unfortunatly it's now not possible anymore to mount /sdcard while in recovery, which makes rooting and installing updates impossible (or is there any other way? eg. fastboot?).
therefore my question: will clockworkmod recovery support ics encrypted devices in the (near) future? i know its gonna be a p.i.a. to type a password with only the volume buttons, but hey
i like the encryption and would like to keep it, but not beeing able to use recovery like before is a big drawback...
greetings
Georg
Same for me.
Hope to see encryption support in clockworkmod soon.
I bought Rom manager premium even if I never flash from rm just to support the developers... hope they will be able to get it sorted out
Op -- I'm interested in this for when my phone (EVO 3D) finally gets ICS. Will you post an update to this thread if you hear anything?
BTW, with TWRP getting touchscreen support, it can't be too much longer before CWM gets touchscreen since I think the guys in TWRP were going to start contributing to CWM, from what I've heard anyway. So that would solve the password typing problem.
Georg, thanks for asking this question as I've been wondering the same exact thing. Hopefully we'll get a good answer soon.

Its because the way encryption works you have to boot and enter code, that's the whole point, no recovery can do it atm

small update:
nothing new on the subject, but i didnt check out the new touch recovery (anyone tried it yet?).
in the mean time i went back to an unencrypted CM9...
I didn't read anything about encryption so did not upgraded to the touch recovery yet
you should lock the bootloader if someone is nagging you

Jomir, what was the procedure you used to get back to CM9? Is it possible to repartition, erasing the encrypted partitions so a new rom can be flashed? How?
Thx,

Thanks for the reply, DarkhShadow. The problem is that CWM can't wipe or format these partitions, since it can't mount /sdcard (which is encrypted). If I could only access the external sdcard from within CWM, I could just wipe everything and then install a new rom. But since it can't mount /sdcard, I can't access sd-ext. nvflash is not an option, since my TF101 is B90. Is there a way to either restore the stock recovery (overwrite CWM) or boot from the external SD so I can run a script such as "super wipe full" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245892)? Maybe there's a way to run the wipe script through adb? If I can just format the partitions (which is what the script does), then CWM would be able to mount /sdcard and, consequently, the external SD and I can flash a new rom (such as revolution HD 3.0.1).
Thanks,
rmsilva
Honestly idk then, try a factory reset on phone(ie booted up) and then maybe it will be unencrypted?

The funny thing is that stock recovery on an encrypted phone can write to the disk, but only from a warm reboot (perhaps the kernel stays resident?).
When I say write to disk I say apply the leaked OTA update, 4.0.4 for the VZ Gnex. And correct me if I am wrong, it's writing and mounting the disk, no?
Anyhow, this is done from stock recovery which is open source. So you ask yourself, why can't Koush support mounting the disk from a warm recovery state reboot? Maybe he doesn't know this?

Use tmpfs to install a new ROM in crypted system
Hello Everyone
To flash a new ROM you can do as follows:
boot in Recovery
format cache partition
from your PC use adb to mount /sdcard as tmpfs:
adb shell mount -t tmpfs none /sdcard
put your ROM on the (fake) sdcard
adb push <your rom> /sdcard
use the recovery to flesh the ROM as usual
This worked form me.
Sorry to be late...
What about a nandroid backup or restore? How big is /cache?

Sorry I didn't try with a nandroid backup but I think it is too big to fit the device memory...
You can backup data inside the sd partiton (phone up and running, just to don't lose data...), boot into recovery, format sdcard partition, mount it, put the backup in the sdcard and after install the nandroid backup...
I think that it could work but I am not sure. If after formatting the sdcard you can mount it, the task is done. You can put the backup on it using adb push and flash using recovery.
If you try please give me some news.
Regards

I'm kind of a noob when it comes to adb. What is that process doing exactly? How big is the fake sdcard? I want to make sure I understand all the implications before I dive in. Of course I need HTC to release a ICS ROM first. ;-)

First it formats the cache partition. Then mount the /sdcard so that you can access it from your pc. After you mount the /sdcard, you can put your rom zip into it. After the zip has been transferred into /sdcard, you can flash the zip as usual.
Since nexus s doesn't have sdcard slot, it mounts the internal storage as '/sdcard' to treat it like a sdcard, thus 'fake' sdcard. The 'fake' sdcard is around 13GB.

When i reboot my phone it wipe all that i saved

Hey guys, i didn't found my problem in other topics, so i opened a new .
So here is the deal, i have the Kisadworx ROM installed now in my Samsung galaxy 3 i5800, and already tried the Kyrillos and both of them have this same issue. When the phone shutdown for low battery, i put it to recharge and when i boot it, it wiped all i have saved. Apps, configs, widgets....just everything. i have no clue why...some one have faced this issue before?
Note: when i enter in recovery mode and try to wipe data/factory reset it shows a message:
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/ log
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
I don't know if this error is related but ok ....
Plz someone could help me?
I had this issue days ago, and it happened to me while I simply only turned off and on my phone.
This is probably caused by bad data and cache(?) partition or by bad (wrong) filesystem used. Try re-flashing STOCK rom eg. XXJPQ and over it custom rom of your choice. If the problem persists, try flashing custom kernel (g3mod) and convert file systems like this:
stl6 - ext4
stl7 - ext4
stl8 - ext2
I never had any issues with g3mod kernel's recovery with theese filesystems.
In gingerbread ROMs I had never issues with data or recovery.

Do you have an ext partition on your phone?
I got into similar problems with the scripts related to ext partition long ago
I too get the recovery error and it is not of any problem to us . This is solved by using g3mod kernel

If youre going from ROM that uses other filesystems than stock samsung's RFS filesystem such as ext2, ext4, so by flashing the stock ROM causes the bootloop WILL be there. (because the stock kernel doesn't support other filesystems than RFS) You need after flashing stock ROM pull the battery, reinsert it, reboot into recovery by pressing 3-keys combo and then "wipe data - factory reset" in recovery and then "wipe cache partition".
After this, the /data and /cache partition gets either mounted again or reformatted (not sure) with the rfs filesystem and the system will be able to boot.
BTW/little hint: You can see for couple of seconds after flashing the stock rom the phone boots into recovery, shows a couple of lines and there are 2 lines that are RED and say something like
DATA: blablabla... !
CACHE: blablabla... !
This process applies to the ROMs such as Purumod, Kyrillos and maybe others what have other filesystems used than the one used by the stock ROM (RFS).
Thats the description of the "bootloop" problem.
BTW... glad we could help and this has been fixed!

[SOLVED] super wiped -> cannot mount/access sdcard -> bricked?

hi, help would higly be appreciated because i think i bricked my beloved tf101g ;(
while testing some roms i used the Super Wipe Full from mike1986 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245892). this script failed - i don`t know why but (sh)it happend.
So my tf (b80, ww-epad-9.2.2.6-20120525) is wiped,
- no rom to start (last bevor wipe was CM10B2 - i think)
- cwm v5.8.1.8 touch starts but
- tells me: e:can`t mount /sdcard/
i spended hours on reading hundrets of "cannot mount" threads here but found no solution to my special situation. already tried several unbrick guides, did a hundred factory resets/formats in cwm, tried to mount data via cwm (error mounting /data), tried another microSD /btw: sdcard does not mean external sd but internal or am i wrong?), .... i cannot access the sdcard, so no way to flash another rom. adb is responding (0123456789ABCDEF recovery).
so, is there any way to use nvflash (b80!) oder adb (in recovery) to
a) get the sdcard back or
b) flash any rom / another recovery to get my tf back to life?
THANKS for any help!!!

look for easyflasher by whitekidney, it might help, it returns u back to stock, then u can root again and install recovery.
Thanks catfishbilly, unfortunalty whitekidney says:
Does NOT work for: TF101G (TF101 3G)
already tried peri 0.4 - which also didn`t helped me out.
not shure wether i did something wrong or tf101g is really not supported.
any other ideas? Thanks in advance!
found this solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24007127&postcount=276
Code:
mounted the external sd as /data
mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /data
adb push recovery.zip /data/media/recovery.zip
then go to 5.5.0.4 recovery , install , choose , and boom : recovery.zip ¡¡¡
recovery flashed , and rom flashed
I cant believe how easy it was to end , 5.5.0.4 is finally able to read external sd with this cheat.
AND: SUCCEEDED - Rogue on my tf101g, access to external!
problem with /data/ still exists, hope to find another thread with a solution....
Thanks to this great forum,
Hi
I'm having some problems before super wipe:
I used Super Wipe Full to erase everything because I was facing some problems on it.
I used a lot of rooms before.
Now I can just access CWM and when I try to install the room, it says: "no files found". I think is isnt reading the external sd.
I tried to send the from via cable, but my computer don't install the driver for it. I also tried to install the driver via asus page.
Any solution?
Thank you...

And now ? Stuck on Asus screen (the very first) no os installed but access to recovery (twrp 2.6).
What i tried ?

- adb .. device detected but Read-Only File system .. impossible to push anything
- adb sideload in trwp .. device not detected on adb command line
- naked driver .. i tried .. but it won't install (files not found ???)
- Always USB MTP Device failed to install
- SDCard unable to mount in twrp (always after format in fat32)
I tried many things but impossible to put any .zip on /sdcard ...

You probably didn't mount your system correctly. You can try this and see if it works out for you. You need to boot into your TWRP and select mount. Then you need to select your internal SD as your mounting SD and tick all the check boxes in the mount option. From here, you can start to install your new rom from your external SD. Good luck.. :fingers-crossed:

You can try to format your external SD as Fat32 with Gparted and set it as primary partition. TWRP probably can't read your SD with a current format. Good luck.
Downgrade to TWRP 2.5.0.0 (2.6.0.0 is buggy) and reflash CROMI or CROM-X (which ever you had working). Old CleanROM won't be compatible with the newer bootloaders

did you rebooted after unlocking the bootloader and flashing the recovery? the sdcard needs to be formated after a reset and this will be done once the phone boots. you will be asked if you want to root and maybe if you want to disable recovery flash. on the first one you can click no and root after you made the backup or just click yes and on the second question you need to click no

In CWM go to Mounts and Storage and choose format /data and /data/media
That will wipe everything on /sdcard but the partition will start mounting!
It would be help in providing a better solution if you attach a pic or exact error text!
