Just moved from the tmo galaxy s3 to this nexus 5. There are so many ROMs and kernels its ridiculous! I'm running Dirty Unicorn now but the battery seems to be draining kind of fast. What kernel is best for battery life?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
A kernel makes very little difference. It's how you setup and use your phone which determines battery life
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Hi,
It's the advantage: the choice.
You will need to test by yourself to see what kernel suits your needs.
Keep in mind that it's mainly your use, settings apps and signal quality that make the battery life... And it depends what you mean by "battery draining fast", without detailed battery stats it's subjective. Check also this thread: Nexus 5 Battery Results.
There is already a thread about the kernels: Kernel discussions.
And: NO Best ROM/Kernel threads.
battery life has everything to do with your personal use, your personal setup, your apps installed, and very much the quality of your phone/data connection. everything else affects battery minimally.
oh, and these kinds of threads arent allowed on xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/best-rom-kernel-threads-t2477889

What seems to be the consensus? What are most folks running?
Thanks in advance

You really just need to try them for yourself. Not all people have the same experience.
Just read the forums and try them, that's the only way to know.

There really isn't a consensus choice of the most stable rom as all have a problem or two. It doesn't help that we all have varying opinions of each Rom.
It really takes some trial and error.
For example, I've tried a few, but I'm back on 4.2 because my phone seems to be allergic to 4.3. Every rom I've tried seems to have a battery sacking element to it, in most cases it's wifi running nonstop and the phone overheating. One time it was Google+ doing it. In all cases, others on the rom weren't experiencing similar issues.
So, it might be dependent on your own experiences with each rom.

How? If so I would live to try it out tonight and see if it works.
I was in my house where I have wifi. I set it to off and it would just run the wifi, according to better battery stats, and the phone gets really hot and the battery drains extremely fast. CM, Liquid, Paranoid. All 4.3 roms hate my phone unless I really do have some feature on incorrectly. I hope you are right.

XDA is a development site not a support site. As such members are expected to do the research, read through the development threads and decide what is BEST for them. The only results that would be posted here are what each member has found to be BEST for them by experimentation based on their phone/usage/setup/apps/signal strength. Please take the time to read through those development threads to learn all about the software you are about to drastically alter your very expensive device with.
Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.

My Nexus 5 will be here soon and I just want to know if ART has any effects on battery life because I plan on using it despite some apps being incompatible with it.

When it comes to battery life thread you'll have two different replies, yes it drains more battery and no it doesn't drain more battery, just better to experience it yourself.
I heard it makes battery life better and performance its just not stable yet

ART doesnt affect battery. and ART is stable, but a few apps wont work with it(a far majority will).
Actually running in art should improve battery life a little as the operations are being performed in native code and not having to be processed through a VM.

Hmm. I'm sorry but I don't get why that would save more battery though. It's still using up the same amount of processing power right?

In theory it has less processing to do.
How are y'all doing it? 6 hours? That's not that good to me. And some dude said he got 6 hours of on-screen time. I'm rooted with experimental kernel

Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I went through it. I just need help with the voltages and all that. The best settings for battery life.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
battery life isnt really about what kernel you use. battery life is all about how you use your phone, how you set it up, what apps you use, and most importantly, the quality of your phone/data connection. sure, a kernel might be able to help you get slightly better battery. but its really your use and your signal. and if your signal is bad quality, then your battery will always suffer.
"Good battery life" does not apply to "everybody" that has rooted. Many root and simply expect that battery life must be improved, but still need to understand the basic laws of physics first.
(People's definition of "Good" in this scenario also varies massively...)
It comes down to how you use the device. There is no 'best settings' you should be looking for. Save yourself the time, and first understand what is using your battery.
SOT is a measurement, but a crude one. It offers no insight into what those 6 hours were doing...You can be certain that it wasn't 6 hours gaming at 100% brightness though. Under relatively light CPU load, low brightness, good signal etc...the laws of physics will explain higher SOT...

this past week some people were having problems with the battery life on CM11 ROM, but it seems it's been fixed on the nightly version, try downloading greenify so you can put those annoying battery eating apps to sleep

What does root access have to do with battery life?

What I did to improve my battery life was to deny most of the Google apps from waking my device and/or keeping my device awake. I have attached pictures. This improved my battery by atleast double. Also using 2g connection when connected to WiFi.
Those denied numbers have risen to 6 digits.

I suppose to rephrase the question "what other battery saving options are available to root users?"

Guys i had problems with call quality audio someone told me to flash another modem im using now the .12 modem but somehow my phone started to battery drain alot so i wanted to ask does modem affect the battery drain. Or is there another modem that call quality is better its really important guys

1) everyone here needs help. Please don't waste thread titles telling us what we already know. Use them to describe your problem so we don't waste time opening threads we know we won't know the answers to. Its in the rules
2) signal affects battery. Modem can affect signal. Try them all to see which works best for you. There is no best modem as each one works differently for each of us.
Ok thanks one more thing can modem affect battery drain ?

So you want to maximize your battery
i. Decrease your brightness level to the a good level. It should be 20% if you are in a room
ii. Switch off the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS if not in use, since they consume battery a lot
iii. Don't install any useless app since they may consume the battery even if the phone is locked
iv. Frequently, close the app which you have used, since they're running in the background and eat up your battery
May be this help you
Hit thanks if helped
Lower screen brightness and disconnect WiFi and 3g/4g connection when you don't need an internet connection.
