eBay phone turns off when using hardware keyboard ... flex cable? - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

So it looks like I have a phone to return.
I had the winning bid for a Doubleshot. Got it today, turned it on (with a spare battery), no problem setting it up. No issues unlocking the bootloader as well. I then set the device up for Google Play, then I ran into problems.
I slid the keyboard out to register with Google, typed two letters, and the device turned off. I relocked the bootloader, and factory reset the device, still shuts off when I use the physical keyboard. I then (on a whim) tried every configuration when I first used the device (SIM card in, SD card out), still nothing.
I fear the flex cable is acting up already. Any other ideas? Anything I can do without tearing it apart (rather return it)? Would I get a hassle for having a re-locked device (should I even mention that part, or let them figure it out - would rather be without my money because they wouldn't take it back than be without both because I neglected to mention before - not that it would be a software issue)?

Unlikely they'd ever notice that you tried unlocking the bootloader and it sounds like they tried to pawn off a failing doubleshot on you so i guess you don't have to feel bad about returning it modded, especially because any warranty it may have had definitely expired a long while ago.
just don't tell eBay because they will likely side with the seller if you let them know you did any modding, even if it was fully reversed.

Thanks Ziida. I don't know if I would call it fully reversed, because HBOOT now says "**RELOCKED**" instead of "**LOCKED**". That's the tell if the ever look for it.
I didn't say anything in case they would make a big deal of it. It's a hardware issue anyway, but if they were willing to pawn off a failing Doubleshot, then it wouldn't be much of a stretch to claim modding caused the failure.
Ah well, it is en route back to them now. And I had another eBay special months ago that I noticed failing after unlocking (couldn't hear the caller) - and they gave me a fuller refund (covered the cost of the return shipping) than these guys - so I'm fretting over nothing.
UPDATE: The phone has been returned, and I got the refund for the phone. What irks me though is although their policy says full refund, I didn't get the cost of shipping (to me) returned as well. I complained about this, and so far no response as to the reason why. Considering almost half the cost went toward shipping the thing forth and back, I may have been better off keeping the broken thing (not using the physical or trying to fix it myself) than have nothing to show for it.
As much as I want to leave their eBay username here as a warning, I think to myself (through this experience) ah well, such is life (although nothing would prevent me from answering if I got a PM).

[Q] DEAD Sensation...

I've had my Sensation for a week or so now... rebooted it earlier on, and now it's totally dead. Won't power up, won't charge, or anything.
Any recommendations of anything to try that I might not have tried? I've got a good background in this kind of technology, so I've tried the usual stuff - battery removal, leaving plugged in, holding buttons for longer etc...
Is there a trick that anyone's found?
If not, should I go back to '3' to replace it... or should I go to HTC and see if they'll replace with a nice S-OFF unit??
Thoughts please?
volume down and power button together and see if you can get recovery screen up and do a factory reset

Sadly it needs something more than that - that was the first thing I tried, thinking it might be software related.
Even tried leaving the battery out overnight before trying again, that didn't work.
What I have found, now, is that if I plug in the charger FIRST, and THEN connect the battery, I get an orange LED. I thought this might mean it is charging, but no, because when I unplug the charger again, the orange LED stays lit, and remains so until the battery is removed again.
I don't recommend trying this yourself, because it does say somewhere in the literature, NOT to apply power, without the battery being in place. I just figured, it's already dead, so it might do something different!
What I'd like to know / find out, is if there's a real "hardware" reset switch/button... my Toshiba TG01 had some hidden PCB pads which would allow different booting modes, etc... somethign like that I think it needs. I'm going to have to get a new one ANYWAY, but it'd be good to know what happened to this one, first!!
Sounds like a hardware issue to me (maybe motherboard failed, that was an issue with all previous HTC devices)
Put it on charge without the battery. Now with a paperclip hit the +- pins for a second. After that unplug it and put battery in and normally charge it. Friend of mine did this with his Sonyericsson and it worked. Otherwise send it back to htc.

Ok, I've spoken to HTC, and as it's within the first 28 days, the onus is on 3UK (Hutchinson3G) to replace the handset.
Spent over an hour in store with them this morning, trying various things, and they decided that they would replace the handset. Except they then realised that they won't replace handsets which were from 3 'direct'.
So, I figured, can't hurt to try the 'shorting' method - I would again, out of a background in electronics, say DO NOT TRY THIS METHOD, UNLESS IT'S A LAST RESORT! IT COULD SERIOUSLY DAMAGE THINGS.
Now, instead of a constant orange light, I've got a flashing orange light.
Still no actual operational power though.

This reminds me of a laptop I used to have - it had a "Quick Boot" feature which relied on stuff in the boot-area of the hard drive. Back then, I had a 'less-than-legitimate' copy of Windows 7, which used a boot-modifier to work as "genuine".
That laptop would, on occasion, refuse to power up for hours, and sometimes days at a time - and I traced that down to it being an issue relating to the loader software in the boot area of the HDD.
I wonder if this is a similar issue on the Sensation - an exception in the "quick boot" that makes it think there's still quick-boot data, even though there isn't, because the battery's been out. It's all hypothetical, but interesting to know how these things tick.
And who knows, maybe 3UK will send me an S-OFF unit in replacement.
i honestly dont know why you would try shorting your phone thats still under warranty. Are you trying not only to fix your phone, but also void your still current warranty?
take it back. get it replaced, and stop trying mcgyver tricks. Its just not needed.

Thanks for your concern for my handset. Personally I'd say having a brand-new, week-old handset to fail completely and spectacularly is 'not needed', either (!) But, really, any of the above actions, which were given to me in good faith, were up to me to use, or not use. I made a calculated decision based on i) the current level of operability of the handset ii) the likelihood of any action taken voiding the warranty iii) the likelihood of my receiving a new handset under said warranty. I hoped I made it clear enough that anyone who would even THINK to consider performing the above procedure would also make such a calculated decision.
I don't know who McGyver is, but you'll notice that I did put a warning in my post stating that others shouldn't try it... chances are it would cause damage to the phone's power management, at the very least, it's cause wear on the voltage regulation side.
That said, there are times when simply shorting devices *can* work as said devices can hold small amounts of charge which can be dissipated with a short, a reverse polarity or otherwise. The cavaets being - a) it's already totally and completely dead, short of it going in flames, it cannot be made worse; b) the shorting (or other action) is momentary - the smallest fraction of a second.
Yes, it's under warranty. Yes, they're going to replace it. If we wanted to go into the whole matter of ethics, *if* I were the manufacturer, and I had proof that someone had done the above steps to their handset, NO, I would not honour the warranty. But I'm not, they don't, the handset already more-than-likely has a mainboard failure, so I was prepared to take the risk.
Eventually, the Service Manual for the device will be released, and this will help with matters of apparent hardware failure. In the meantime, it's a learning curve for everyone, and if I could help that curve at all with my dead handset, in the knowledge that a new one is coming, that's what I hoped to do.
Again, for all clarity, safety, etc. I am not advocating, or recommending the actions detailed above, or ANY other action other than in accordance with the user manual which was provided to you with your device. Do ANY of the above STRICTLY at your own risk, and on your head be it.
If anyone else has any ideas - "McGyver" or otherwise (who is he?!) - that won't obviously cause warranty-replacement issues, I would be happy to try them in the hope of furthering the knowledge of this new device. I'm grateful for any help, and for any chance to increase the small amount of knowledge we already have on this device.

I hat the same problem on my TG01, at the end it came out the Li-ion was all draind and my TG01 would not Charge it anymore.
not eaven in an external Charger
New battery was the only solution.

I remember the days of the TG01 - turned out a decent handset, in the end.
I'd hope it's not a faulty battery on a week-old handset - although I don't have another battery to test it with, so I suppose it's possible that it was manufactured as faulty.
My new handset replacement arrives on Tuesday though... but I'll keep checking here to see if anyone wants me to do anything with this one in the mean time.
Had my first Sensation for a week and then it beeped and died just like yours. All I did was swap the battery and plug in the charger. Still nothing. Called TMO and got a replacement.
I think even if you managed to do CPR and get it back up the fact it died in the first place indicates a serious problem. Personally I'd rather have one that's reliable.
I would be excited if my sensation bricked, I've been trying to brick it for a few days. sadly no luck. If it is bricked tmobile atleast will replace it with another, that's atleast another chance at getting s-off.
Mine did what yours did the other day. I thought it was ****ed. I took battery out for 5 and after that put it in and charged for ten minutes. Sadly, it worked fine after that.

Just got a used slide, and it's acting wonky.

I picked up one of these off of a lady for $20; it was missing the back cover and battery, but it was in pretty decent cosmetic condition, so I figured I could sell the
parts to break even at worst, haha.
Anyway, I finally got a new battery yesterday, and the phone is acting funny.
So far I've noticed:
1. Microphone doesn't work. Any apps that use the microphone won't work either.
2. No sound whatsoever. Headphones, speaker, back speaker not a squeak.
3. It can't use flash because of the "cold weather." That just sounds silly, haha.
4. Camcorder immediately shuts off when I try to record. (Camera works perfectly though)
5. Won't charge. It will charge for about 20 seconds before it stops charging. The LED will then alternate between orange and green blinks.
6. Won't connect to the computer. This might just be a problem with the drivers, but the computer doesn't even seem to recognize its existence. The phone will "charge" though. (until the LED starts blinking)
7. Will shut off randomly. I usually don't notice when though.
8. Power button is often unresponsive, when waking the device up or even when booting up.
9.Genius Button Useless, although that might just be the microphone.
I first suspected water damage, but what I think is the indicator, the water sticker above the SD card slot, is white. However, I noticed a VOID sticker on the bottom left screw of the battery compartment.
Does anybody have any idea as to what the problem could be? Is it perhaps
software-based? Any suggestions at this juncture would be greatly appreciated.

Hardware fault of some or many sorts.
For connecting to the computer, it may be set to charge only in settings, so then it wouldn't recognize it.
The white water indicator would turn pink or something if wet - so that's good.
The void sticker is good too - it's something HTC puts on a screw to tell if the device has been opened up.
If the void sticker isn't punched, and the water indicator is fine, then i'd suggest calling HTC and seeing about a warranty exhange.
Explain your problems, and that it's not wet and hasn't been taken apart, and they will tell you if the phone can be sent in based on the serial #.
It just might be in warranty period and they'll fix it for you.

The HTC warranty is by device.
I needed warranty service on a doubleshot that one of the LED lights died in. I was at least the third owner of the device for sure. I bought it from another developer who bought it secondhand from a person.
HTC fixed it and sent it back to me. All it cost me is shipping to get it there, they fixed the light for free, and sent it back to me at their expense.
The device is guaranteed against defects not your fault for a certain amount of time - doesn't matter who's hands it happens to be in when the problem occurs.
For the money you spent to get it, another couple of dollars in shipping to get a good, working phone, i'd at least call and see were I you.

OT, but it's of interest to me. Is that a panda trueno? or a panda painted s12? Either way, I approve! I own an S12 and I get asked all the time if it's a corolla...
If you can't get it fixed or sell it for any reason, I'd be happy to take it off your hands for more than you paid.

I'm so frustrated ... why has this happened again?

And the exact same thing has just happened, again. But its worse this time.
Last time... I was watching a video and unplugged the charging cable (from the TF700 end) and it went black ...and that was IT. As described in the other thread, there was no way I could revive the unit at all, and I do believe something had shorted out - the charging light (which usually is orange while charging) wouldn't light at all. Tried all the usual tricks. No go. Returned to point of purchase and received a new unit.
10 minutes ago... same bloody thing, with the exception being, I wasn't watching a video. It was probably at about 50-60% charged if I were to guess, and it was just beside me. Took the charging cable out and walked away and of course, the screen wont turn on... COME ON! Yeah, same thing. Go back and plug it in. No orange light anymore. Reset pin: nothing. Hold down power button: nothing. No access from PC. DEAD AGAIN.
Here's why its worse this time:
1) I'm passed the 30-day return period with retail vendor.
2) I unlocked it (last weekend), and you guys know the story on this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1965214). I basically had to click a checkbox acknowledging me flushing my warranty down the toilet. I'm from Canada, so a squaretrade warranty (which I would have done), was not an option.
Why did I unlock it? Because since upgrading to JB, the I/O issues have been ridiculous, making it quite unusable... and I wanted to give CleanRom a try, and I did, and it was just great. It was running so freaking well at this point. I literally had just got everything the way wanted it after making the exchange not too long ago and was so happy with it.
So, yeah, why would this happen to me again? We're talking a different unit, a different charging cable /power adapter, hell... a different wall socket. Same scenario though... remove cable and BAM. I'm so frustrated at this, especially since it seems I may be out a hard earned $500 if Asus says no warranty you unlocked it. My only speculation is this. The charging port in these units has been a bit "loose". By that I mean... there's a bit of a wiggle factor when he cable is connected. I recall thinking that that's not good for long term reliability. I believe when I pulled it out, it was not a completely straight-out pull (ie: a bit of one side first). Could this possibly have anything to do with it? Could there be some design flaw to allow a short in this instance? I've not heard of any similar stories though.

Don't suppose you remember the exact serial numbers of both units? There could be a fault in the production line.
It sounds suspiciously like a power spike issue from the electricity net. Even if you shorted out the adapter plug, it shouldn't kill the whole device. However a power surge could fry the entire unit.
Couple of years ago we had issues with the power company, they were sending unstable voltage through the net. Ever so often it would spike, frying anything connected that wasn't behind or included a power equalizer.
You can still send it back to Asus when it's unlocked, they'll just charge you for it. I don't know how it is in other parts of the world, but here in Europe the store has to offer you a mandatory 2 year warranty that means they have to take the device back when the hardware mysteriously dies. (with the exclusion of things such as water damage, drop damage and other user-induced damages.)
Yes, I would have the serial numbers... I believe they are noted on my receipts.
I don't think it's a power spike issue. The reason why is that the issue happened right after unplugging for some reason, and both times were protected by (two different) high quality surge protectors, and also I have a lot of other electronics in my place... Nothing else effected (not have it had any similar problems).
Well I guess it goes back to Asus. We don't have that mandated in store warranty here. To tell you the truth, now I'd rather just not have it now, as this has been frustrating.

Does it make any noise if you plug in the power/usb cord back into the unit? Every once in a while, too often to my liking, my unit's display won't wake. Sometimes after hitting power button and touching the screen it does. Half the time, I have to just hold the power button till it reboots, which is something like sixty seconds.

I thought you passed the 30 day window on the second one? But if your unlocked and they know then your screwed. Knowing Asus quality control issue, I would not do anything to break warranty unless I had an aftermarket Accidental warranty such as squaretrade or something similar. But then again, you should have known all of these risks before unlocking and accepted all the consequences good or bad. Now your options are:
1. Play dumb and go back to the store and say that Im on day 17 and my tablet suddenly stopped working and pray they dont tell you to send it to asus for a warranty fix and just give you a new one or even better your money back
2. Send it to Asus, pray they forgive you and fix it for free and make your tablet unlockable or give you the estimate on the damage since they know your tablet is out of warranty.
I worked in electronics\electrical repair for around 34 years...
This sure sounds like an ESD spike problem.
Or ungrounded-improperly grounded house wiring.

No, not past the 30 day window on the second one, but the vendor is not very forgiving on warranty related stuff like this. I think they will follow procedure to the letter. It will have to back to asus, or in the garbage. I have no idea how much it will cost to fix. PS - I definately did look at the squaretrade warranty before doing this but they would NOT offer me coverage (in Canada) on a unit I had already purchased (only from select vendors on their list that you purchase through with their warranty).

Well I'm in pretty modern loft and I think the electrical is probably fine (and I've had no other problems with my electronics, and was using surge protector -- not that that's a failsafe solution), but yeah, I'm very quite certain that it has to do with a shorting in the or ESD in the charge connector socket... and I specifically noticed the connector came out a bit sideways both times it happened (ie: not straight out - one side out a bit first). I'm pretty sure there's a design flaw here and that there's some way that he pins are shorting?? Interestingly, I found this guy's post here that has seemed to have experienced the same thing as me - TODAY, it seems:

I read your post two days ago and thought 'unlucky', and went about my life. Then it happened to me last night! Took it off the charger, boom, that was it. This my fourth tablet in 2012 (two Primes, two Infinities), and if I manage to get a refund on this (past my 30 days) then I'll never be going back to Asus. I've tried and tried, and gave them another chance after I got a refund for my always-half-broken Prime, but that's it. Experiment over. Either Nexus 10 or Chromebook for me next.
Yeah, I agree, unfortunately. Call it bad luck perhaps but with this round of failures and my Asus U36JC notebook that lasted 4-days (the replacement has lasted me a 1.5 yrs)... I just don't think I can do it again, as much as I like the brand. These have been my first and only two Asus purchases. Comparatively speaking, I've simply just not had this rate of failure with other [supposedly lesser quality] manufacturers...

Ah - I've been told RMA is the only way. They must be cracking down on philanthropy after so many people got refunds on their Primes. As my Infinity is bricked AND the buttons barely work, there's a good chance I'll get a new device one hopes.
Sorry about your situation, but yeah, there are so many device manufacturers out there, would be silly not to 'punish' Asus by sticking with them. Mind you, when it comes to 10 inch Android tablets, there's no a lot to choose from.
I had the exact same thing, within 30 days and simply called my seller Amazon and they said and it back for a refund. I THINK I remember seeing the unlocking only voiding warranty fit software issues, not compete hardware failure... maybe with a check?

Horrible experience my time using Swappa and first time selling my used phone.

Just a warning to those wanting to sell a used phone. There are of course risks associated with this however small it may be.
I have an LG G4 that I hated due to many reasons. The phone was in great physical condition though so I decided to sell it on Swappa. I've given away phones or just kept them around but had never attempted to sell one.
I had already replaced my phone with the LG V20 so the phone sat for a few weeks unused. I charged both batteries and did a factory reset and sold it on swappa.
No feedback was ever left but I didn't mind. About 14 days later the buyer files a claim that the usb port is loose and the phone started to bootloop after he did a sprint update. He had a difficult time getting them to get his information out but best buy finally did.

I understand the bootloop may just be REALLY bad luck but the broken port lets me wonder if someone did a motherboard swap. The cord can't even stay in the phone at all. I would NEVER sell something that isn't in great condition which is why I've never sold a phone prior to this. I took pictures of the only small scratch and close ups of the entire phone.
I guess that the only thing I can do is attempt to heatgun the motherboard and when it boot's up, see if the imei matches. End of rant.

I have an LG G4 that I hated due to many reasons. The phone was in great physical condition though so I decided to sell it on Swappa. I've given away phones or just kept them around but had never attempted to sell one.
I had already replaced my phone with the LG V20 so the phone sat for a few weeks unused. I charged both batteries and did a factory reset and sold it on swappa.
No feedback was ever left but I didn't mind. About 14 days later the buyer files a claim that the usb port is loose and the phone started to bootloop after he did a sprint update. He had a difficult time getting them to get his information out but best buy finally did.

I plan on trashing the phone. Figured, that I'd do this before throwing it away. I've used this technique on xbox 360 to repair a hackable xbox and watercooled it (video on youtube). It lasted years until I got tired of it. I've already butchered the free external battery charger to make it charge my v20's battery. I'll be dumping off the 2 batteries at bestbuy's battery dump today.

hard brick - any hope?

So, I flashed my S8+ onto BatMan-Rom today with no apparent issues. Clean flash, booted with no problems. While restoring apps (not system data) with Titanium Backup, my phone's screen switched off and I couldn't get it back on. The phone got really hot but would not reset with holding power+vol+bixby or any other button combination. Tried plugging into my PC, ADB didn't detect the phone. Desperate, I disassembled the phone far enough to disconnect the battery from the mainboard and then reconnect it, hoping that would force some kind of reset. Instead, I went from a hot phone I couldn't do anything with to a cold one. No button combo gets me anything - no recovery, no odin mode, nothing. Am I as screwed as I think I am? It seems to me I'm out $900 on a paperweight, and I can't even figure out what went wrong since I wasn't messing with anything at the system level when this happened.

Oh, dude...I feel your pain....wish I could help.
Can't you just contact the retailer and sort of, ahem, forget to tell them that you rooted it and took it apart and that it just, well, simply broke?
Surely there's some kinda warranty?
Or claim on home contents insurance?

You're proposing fraud, which is a form of theft. And ultimately, it's all the other customers who subsidize such acts.
What we customers are subsidizing is Samsung's greedy bull**** of producing different versions of a product specifically so they can get away with not offering warranty coverage for unlocked/rooted devices in North America. If there were a way for me to game the system to force them (or a retailer) to replace my phone, believe me, I would, especially since this happened when I was restoring apps and not in the course of flashing a rom or otherwise messing with anything at the system level; it does feel like a defect in the device to me at this point.
That's all academic though, since I'm outside the retailer's return window and there's not going to be anything accomplished through that angle. Worst case scenario at this point is selling the device for parts and going back to my Nexus 6P with all its battery issues until I can get my hands on a phone made by a company that doesn't pull this "no warranty for power users" crap - an Essential Phone or a Pixel 2 XL, I guess. But I would of course prefer to find a way to fix my S8+. At the moment I think the first problem is that it's not charging - battery doesn't even get warmer than room temperature after being plugged in for hours. I'm going to try a wireless charger tonight and see if the charger lights up saying it's connected to the device, but I'm not holding out much hope.
I've read that previous Galaxy devices could be reflashed to stock with special USB devices that repair shops had access to...do we know if there's anything like that with the S8?
"Power users" amount to nothing now with all the millions sold and billions made. They make more locking down there stuff. Doing the stuff we do now is considered a security risk.
Look, this is getting off topic. Whether or not you think billion-dollar corporations should be able to artificially create situations that drive certain customers to purchase devices without warranty coverage so they can ignore us when things go wrong and make another easy $800 is not really important. The situation I'm in is what it is, and I imagine others might find themselves in that situation sooner or later, so does anyone have any ideas on a) how this might have happened in the first place or b) what I might try in the way of repairs, short of replacing the mainboard?

just sent it to change/repair using ur garant...it seems a phisical problem more than firmware/software issue...if not go to a repair service so they can check wich piece is making the problem.
Theres a posibility is the mainboard so dont waste more time asking here and go to a repair center in or out of warranty.
