ota updates you wont get with a custom kernel. you need to have everything(besides the root binaries) completely stock, no modifications at all.

actually deodexed might not receive an ota, since the odex files are "removed". but for that im unsure.

odexed version with stock recovery as well. but why do you need an ota? many times theres a custom rom or a stock aosp rom ready with the new code by the time the ota starts. maybe at lates a few days after there are rooted roms already out.

I did this guide to get the stock rom :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
I did method 2, because method 1 didnt work...
I heard that the 4.4.3 fix some camera bugs, so I'm want to check it...
Thank you so much for the help!!! and thanks to Zepius for your Excellent Guide!!!

Hey,
Just one problem, after I installed the stock rom, some applications stopped to run, and when I connect it to the computer (With USB Debugging and MTP) it's just showing me a "Internal memory" and I cant copy anything...

Not sure where but I read that if anything under /system/app is modified it automatically disables Ota. If that's true that would mean you'd need an odexed ROM with no SuperSU and definitely stock kernel.

no you can get the OTA with SuperSu/Superuser.
the issue the missing odex files. the OTA performs a check and looks for those.

Currently running miui with matrix kernel and I'm looking into flashing a stock gingerbread ROM to receive ics when it is released. I've flashed customs ROMs before but have never gone back to stock. How do I go about doing this? Will I need to reroot my phone? And will I be able to flash a kernel on the stock ROM? Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it. Someone kind will post it here in a zip file soon after release i would imagine!

This is not necessary; somebody will almost certainly post a zip of it here you can flash.

No. As long as you have CWM, you're all set.

If someone makes one, sure.
sorry for abusing you thread, mokflurry, but i also have a question regarding requirements for the upcoming ota-update.
i am running stock rom, rooted, with cwm and custom kernel.
regarding the recovery, i already read, that this shouldn't be a problem. can anybody confirm that?
and what about the kernel? will i have to return to complete stock for ota?
thanks in advance!

You can be rooted with another recovery, But need stock rom and kernel.
Until and unless you believe that you will be the first one to get the OTA, you need not worry about the OTA. It will be up on XDA as soon as OTA is rolled and you be flashing it even before the OTA is actually is pushed to you

System update question

Hi,
ATM I'm running KK4.4.2+Cataclysm. My question is, can I update safely or I need to do something?
Thanks
Update safely? Cataclysm didn't have an update to 4.4.3 or 4.4.4. You'll need to start from a different ROM or start from stock if you want to update.
Seeing a stupid comment on Google Play about an app you love and marking it as "spam". You've done it too.
Cataclysm is gone. You need a new rom. You'll like purity if you like Cataclysm

Sorry, I meant can I just Install the KK update? (dont care about cataclysm)
Yea should work

It really depends what you mean by "update"
If you mean "can I install the OTA?" then no. If you mean "Can I install a 4.4.4 full ROM?" then yes.

No need to sulk. Dirty flash Vomer's stock rooted 4.4.4 rom and see if everything works. If it doesn't only then do a clean wipe. Same goes for Purity if you want to try that out

Update the entire ROM. OTA is designed to patch existng system files in your rom 9adding new code to existing code), but you're using a modified rom so this code will cause problems and lead to an unstable device.
Just go into recovery and flash the rooted stock rom which you can find in the resources section in my signature. If you want a rom with more functionality than stock, just find one in the dev sections and do the same.

You're running Optipop, a custom rom, and Uber, a custom kernel. You're going to have to update manually. You're not tied to that rom/kernel but it's a good combo.

Thanks how do i update manually? Sorry for all the questions

You can`t if you have have a custom rom, recovery, kernel and changed the system. You have to be full stock and made no alteration in any way to the system.

Oh ok,thanks. Anyway to go back stock or should i leave well enough alone?

You can always flash the full 5.0.1 factory image, but if you`re happy with your current rom just leave it as it is mate

[Solved]Is there root for stock kernel on 6.0

I've been looking around, but I can't find anything to suggest root is available on the stock kernel. Does anyone know if there is? CF-Autoroot doesn't work for 6.0, and so far all I've found is root for custom kernels but I want all stock.
try this

Thanks for the link, I already looked there and they said "This is a stock kernel which provides root access along with some tweaks". It has tweaks in it, so to me that's modified which isn't stock IMO. Sorry I'm just a fussy person, I've tried custom ROMs and the rest before, but they tend to just screw stuff up for me, even the highly favorable CyanogenMod ROMs, they used to make my phone a furnace at idle! So I like the clean (almost) bug-free, vanilla stock experience on my daily driver device.

You could try Chainfire's modded boot image alone (i.e. without another custom kernel).
Perhaps it more "stock" than others. I just followed his instructions (flashed the boot.img and flashed the beta SuperSU zip in TWRP) and I appear to have root on stock Marshmallow.

I'd say, just flash the boot.img from the factory image.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
If you rooted before, you'll lose root...

I'd recommend the same thing, and agreed, if you rooted using the method linked in this thread earlier, you definitely will lose root!

No way to go stock after new update?

I asked in the MOAR q&a thread but realized it's a generic question that does not generally pertain to the ROM. After the new stock update Odin is useless to flash any thing because it blocks any flashing at the bootloader. Is there any way to go stock if I haven't backed up anything? I'm currently running on the new update base and have MOAR speed racer flashed. Thank you for any help
Any fixes yet same thing I just ran into. I haven't used stock in so long I had no idea you couldn't go back

What version are you on now? As of PK1 firmware, you cannot flash back to a previous version, you would need PK1 or newer to go back to stock.
I have stock rom BPJ2, rooted. I found the PK1 rom, can I flash this via TWRP?

TWRP is for custom rom only.
Stock tar has to be flashed with odin.
Thanks for the advice/help......................btw, forgot where I found the PK1 link, can you help me to find it?
