[Q] Whatsapp cannot restore backup! - General Questions and Answers

I've been trying to restore my chats from my Galaxy Fit with whatsapp version 2.11.175 to my Galaxy S3 Neo with whatsapp version 2.11.238 with no success! I transferred my sd card which contains the whatsapp folder(old). It didn't work. So, I copy/pasted the database & several other folders that weren't there in the new folder (the 2.11.238's folder) from the sd card one and reinstalled the app. This time it asked if I wanted to restore the found backup or not...to which I clicked the restore button...After few seconds, I got an error saying it couldn't restore & continued synchronizing. >_<
Is there a way to restore all the chats? Without rooting?
Please help guys! Thanks in advance!

If you would like to keep a record of your messages on a computer or in email, you can email yourself individual chat histories. Please follow these steps:
Open the chat you wish to save.
Tap the three dots in the bottom right hand corner.
Tap info.
In the info screen, scroll down and tap email chat history.
Note: Your chat history may be cut off by the Windows Mail message size restriction.
I don't know other ways.

can't read old sms messages after restoring from backup

Hi
I have an xda 2.
I recently carried out a hard reset to clean up my xda 2.
Unfortunately when I tried restoring my back up (from active sync) there appears 2 be a problem with old sms messages.
I had created a number of sub-folders where I had moved my old messages.
I can see the old sms messages in the folder but I can not open, read or forward them. There are no problems with new sms messages.
Has anyone come acrosss this before and can you advise me on how to retrieve these please?
Thanks.
Salim
....No response...does noboby love me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I've had a look through the forums and have foubd similarish problems but nothing seems to help
This is wht I have done so far
1. Downloaded mobile vault to interrogate my back up - but this has proved futile as when I go to where I believe the sms messages are the ones I want are blank (even though I can see them in the sms folder but not expand them).
2. I downloaded Jeye Mobile companion and Jeyo Outlook extender
JMC did not help much
Jeyo Outlook Extender will let me read the SMS messages that are in my inbox (but not accessible via the XDA II). However, any stored in the other folders I have set up are not accessible (I don't seem to be able to see the folders I have set up on the XDA II).
3. I have performed more hard resets - and backups any sms in the back up (even in the inbox) suffer the same fate of not being readable (But I have now backed up mu more recent ones elsewhere).
Well I'm exhausting my options now.
Any help would be more than welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I have searched the forums but haven't had much luck - if anyone knows of a similar post that has had a reply then could they point me to it).
Any news
Has anyone ever found a way round this?
Similar problem - looking for a solution also.
I had to restore after my SPV M2000 hard reset itself and I cannot view Old or NEW sms messages (apart from when the message bubble is shown as a new message arrives). My messaging inbox, drafts, outbox and deleted items all show the number of messages in them, but I cannot view or access any of them.
Is there any way these messages can be accessed or deleted?
Help!!
Any solution yet
Hi... has anyone figured a way around this yet?
I've spoken to someone at o2 and they said it had something to do with the way the inbox is recognised/linked.
After a hard reset the system is given a new id...but the old messages are linked to an older id....
There must be someway around this.
If I can see the message headers surely there must eb a way of reading the messages!!!!!
HELP PLEASE
A work around if you're stuck
I use Sprite backup which caused this problem after a restore. After raising it with their support team they supplied me with the attached file which allows SMS messages to be received and read.
BE AWARE that all messages on the device will be deleted, but new messages received will work. This will erase SMS, MMS & any emails that are on the device, so use with caution. Make sure you have a full backup!!!

BIG problem with SMS (all lost)

Today I received sms form my friend. Nothing special - alert appeared, I clicked "Go to". And then... There was no chat history (I had pretty long chat with my friend), only one "link" (blue underlined label): "View older messages...". When I clicked on it (I thought chat was too long for cache, but I have longer working good) something started mixing and flashing on screen and now I had EMPTY all boxes (inbox, sent, outbox). When I killed (with task manager) Messaging app I couldn't run it again...
Luckly I made backup (with SPB Backup) this morning, so I had many chances to try to repair it. I discovered, that when I entered that chat (with "View older messages") and then I click OK, not close or X, this same happends - I lost my messages and cannot run Messaging app.
I'm fighting with it for about 4 hours now. I recovered morning backup about 20 times... On the other forum I've found, that messages are kept in "\cemail.vol". I noticed, that this file gets smaller (2-3 times) after this situation... I also tried deleting it (it's pretty hard, because file is protected, but I can do it with mortscript added to startup) without result - I still had all my messages, and entering that one chat was causing failure.
Does anybody have idea what could I do? I know, Hard Reset, but I'd like to keep my messages. I tried Jeyo Mobile Companion and other software to backup my smses, but Palm has teaked OS, and none of these apps can see my messages. At least I'd like to export it to txt file to read them on pc/ppc.
Can anybody hepl me, please?
Best regards,
Milosz
PS
I won't do HR now, waiting for solution and watching if other chats are "good"...
No chance i think. As you have said, the Palm Treo handles SMS-Messages not in the standard way. For the future you can try "SMS forwarder & archiver" from thbi. With SMSForwarder you can redirect your sms-messages to Outlook Notes. The Program ist only available in german in the moment.
Look here: http://www.thbi.de/de/software/smsforwarderarchiver/index.html

Thanks thbi for your answer.
Is there way to export (to any form) my messages? I decided to purge all messages from my Treo but I'd like to hve copy (copy to read them, not backup).
Where does Treo store messages? In what file?
I made HR and I'd like to restore my backup (SPB Backup) but except that file. I tried resoring everything except databases, but I have my messages... And still having this same problem...

[Q] Viber mixes up all names

After recovering viber + data with titanium backup every time I have updated my rom, it suddenly started to mix up the names in all the conversations a couple of months ago.
My fathers name is on me and my sisters conversation and my father is named some random name from my contact list that does not have viber, but still it shows an image of him.
Everytime I recover viber the names are different. I wonder what my dad is going to be named now?
This has been driving me crazy as I have sent a message to wrong person thinking I sent it to the right several times.
What to do? I don't want to remove viber completely with all it´s data because I have conversations that I want to keep.
Anyone?

This happens because Viber keeps Android contact IDs in its database and the contact IDs change when you update your ROM, wipe your contacts and then set up your contacts again (e.g. by syncing to Google)
If you know SQL then you can fix the data by hand - I had the same problem.
Install sqlite3 on your computer (it comes with Mac OS X), then pull the Viber databases in /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases and the Android contacts databases in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases onto your computer.
Look in the contacts table in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db to find the new IDs of the contacts who you use Viber to send messages to. Then look in the participants table in /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages to find out the OLD contact IDs that viber is using. Then update viber_messages and participants, for example I needed to change old contact ID 1364 to new contact ID 683 and old contact ID 1440 to new contact ID 1666 and I used these statements:
Code:
update messages set person = 683 where person = 1364;
update messages set person = 1666 where person = 1440;
update participants set contact_name = display_name, contact_id = 683 where contact_id = 1364;
update participants set contact_name = display_name, contact_id = 1666 where contact_id = 1440;
When you're done push the Viber messages database back to your phone. Use these commands (change 10065 to the user ID for Viber on your phone):
Code:
adb shell 'rm /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages*'
adb push viber_messages /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/
adb shell chmod 660 /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages*
adb shell chown 10065 /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages*
adb shell chgrp 10065 /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages*
Viber is crap program
caused me many problems in the past. some contacts names doesnt show up!!
Hi everyone,
This is an official member of the Viber R&D Team. I'm here to provide direct support.
About the Titanium backup issue - please note that Titanium is a third-party application that does not officially link to Viber, and so we (Viber) naturally cannot guarantee that it will smoothly work with Viber's features.
You might want to contact Titanium developers for more information and assistance
@The Prince1 -
The source of this issue could greatly vary. Please read this short page in our HelpDesk, outlining some possible workarounds that will help reboot synchronization of the contact list: http://bit.ly/rRtPqk
(The instructions refer to iPhone, but are relevant to all phones nevertheless).

Thanks for your answer! I really appreciate that Viber team are answering questions out on the forums cause this is not the first time I see you around. I can really notice a presence of you guys.
I will continue using Viber despite my problems(that I do not blame you for, after all Titanium backup is a third-party application) with it.
On topic: I will look further into this, probably using SQL.
It's our pleasure to help!
If you have any more questions/suggestions for us in the future, please don't hesitate to contact me again

All what TB does is to backup the data folder "as it is", it has nothing to do with Viber or know how viber works, and nobody should contact TB team because the restore of Viber app doesn't work, mainly because the issue here is Viber itself. also because from the 100's of apps I backup with TB, only Viber suffer from this issue.
what frankoid described is the real issue, so the solution should be that Viber finds a different way of connecting its contacts with the Android Contacts.
anyway, thanks for the response.
@mcbyte_it -
You are right - technologically, it is not an impossible task to implement the options you mentioned into our app. However, please bear in mind that you are not the only user who requests features from us among our millions of users worldwide.
Aside from that, we also have other projects running in our company, like Viber on whole new platforms, for example.
All of the above doesn't mean we neglect our users' requests. We invite you to enter our Feature Request page and post your suggestion there, or join an existing similar suggestion. The more people join on a request, the faster it will become reality
You can find it here: http://helpme.viber.com/index.php/Knowledgebase/Article/View/43/9/have-an-idea-for-a-new-feature
I may have solved this problem..
I backed up my contacts using titanium backup.. But all of my contacts are synced in Google. Then, I restored it in titanium backup, contacts are not appearing.. Login to Google contacts synced then when I accessed Viber. Names are not mixed up!!
Anyway, Viber should have put an export and import function. I hope this will be implemented on the future

I have found an easier way of doing this than going thru this finding and updating.
I had the same issue, I deleted the vibers copy of contacts stored in this db /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_data
Once this is deleted, inside viber > contacts, all contacts are gone, now press menu and select update contacts.
All contacts are back and mapped correctly to conversations.

Great. This is handy, only thing that I hate is I need to root my phone just to restore my viber messages
Sent from my LT29i using Tapatalk 2
Well this buy happens only for root users and so the solution requiring root would be normal.
I mean titanium backup and restore of data directly, is possible only for root users, so this bug arises and you can fix this easily by deleting that DB and refreshing contacts

I don't know why but it doesn't work for me. I'm able to see only one contact and no names in messages that I restored from viber_messages.

Just clear app data, set up your number on viber again, and all contacts should show up with their actual name.

First of thanks (again!)
I can confirm this still works, worked for me anyways!
Only difference is before I got to press 'update contatcs'.... Viber updated them automatically on launch and problem solved
My problem was wrong contacts for existing messages, I do as many others use TB to backup app+data.
Cheers!

There is a-lot easier way to fix this problem.
Open People app (the phone's contact manager) and edit broken contact:
1- Delete end number of mobile number and save the contact.
2- Open Viber then hit back.
3- Again edit broken contact and add deleted number at end of mobile number.
4- Open Viber you'll see broken contact-thread is fixed
This will work for non-root users too.

Thanks, this worked perfectly for me :good:
Sorry for digging up and old thread but I can confirm that this is still and issue with the current versions of Viber on at least 3 separate phones that I've used.
I just fixed some rogue contact lists the other night - for some reason using Viber it merges different contacts together.

I have not tried the live wallpaper
If you are going to blatantly copy and paste text from other websites then don't, its called plagiarism. Link to the original site if you want to share something.
I already informed you about this when I closed your previous thread.

I have htc desire x
i go into viber > settings > calls and messages > email message history and start creating the backup file.
it loads for a while and then exits the loading symbol (if you get what i mean) and just leaves me on the calls and messages page

the first conversation backs up and emails fine but the second just wont backup and email.
im wondering if viber has a limit of messages you can have to backup your messages?
anyone got any tips to help me backup the second conversation because the first i really dont care about i just really want to save the second conversation.
