I got a Nexus S the other day and so far impressed apart from one thing. I left the phone on charge overnight and in the morning it said it was only 96% charged. This was with it plugged into the mains charger for almost 8 hours with the phone on stand-by.
So I read on a thread somewhere you need to discharge the battery fully, then charge the phone with it turned off to correct this. So I did that last night and again this morning it says it's only 96% charged.
I'm also disappointed at how slowly it charges via the USB cable. Had it plugged in for a couple hours at work on my computer and it only went up by around 3%, this is shocking. I'm trying it again now on a different computer and so far it's only gone up 1% in an hour.
What is going on?
It's meant to stop at 95% - 96%
Leaving your battery at high voltage (100%) will cost the battery lifespan to shorten in the long run. So usually chargers do not charge it to 100% at all but slightly below it to lengthen battery life.
OK thanks for your quick response.
Regarding it being slow to charge connected to a computer, is that normal?
Are you leaving your screen on while charging? Because the screen eat alot of power, so that might be the case.

Nope, it turns off after 30 seconds. Wifi was also turned off.
Maybe try using SetCPU to alter your processor speed during charging and screen off to the lowest. It will significantly increase your charging speed.

I will give that a go. But really should this be something that I have to do, shouldn't the phone charge on it's default settings via USB at a decent rate?
It might be due to programs running at the background. I'm not sure. But my Nexus S charges fast enough though. Not as slow as you mention. Maybe try doing a charge after a reboot of your phone? If it charges faster after the reboot, it is most likely the background processes you had.

Yes it is. USB only supplies 500mA. Plugging into the wall is usually 700mA or 1A. Have you ever seen how long it takes to charge an iPad on USB? Its wall charger is 2A.

No because usb is only half power of regular wall charger, so it takes much longer to charge on usb. It's possible when using the phone during usb charging to pull more power than usb can provide, stopping the charge completely.

I also have this problems, but if don't use the computer usb to charge, it seems no problem.
Hello there,
I decided to open this thread as I've now had a bunch of issues with the stock charger that came with the device and it would be interesting to know if there's anyone else who's having this type of issues.
The exact issues that I've been having with the stock charger seems to be that the charger doesn't output enough of a amperage for the tablet to hold charge while in use, and even when it's not in use it takes almost 7-8 hours to charge from 50% up to 100%. It's as slow as if I would charge it from a regular USB port, if not, even slower and I don't really know why exactly this happens as it says that it's charging from AC adapter in settings.
To comfirm my issue was not related to the tablet itself, I used another charger that's rated at similar specs to the stock charger (2.1A) but with the same Micro-Usb cable that came with the tab. With that charger, it charged up from 50% extremely fast (around 1,5 hour) and I could even use the tablet while charging without any battery drops. So that comfirms two things, it's not related to the tablet or data cable but to the actual charger itself.
Anyone else that's been having this type of issues with the stock charger?
My tab needs max. about 3 hours to charge full and imo it's ok. Tried charging during Half Life2 gaming and can confirm that there's not a lot of charging going on, maybe 1or 2% in an hour. But that's ok for me, as long as it doesn't start to get emty while charging during gaming.
The charger is defective or don't bring enough power to the unit. I also get negative charge while playing high end games an also increase when i am, on Optimized mode. Many others has reported this situation on GeForce forums but nVidia is quiet about it.

I get negative charge even when doing basic tasks like listen to music or watch a video with the stock charger, so I guess my charger is faulty. I've already reported the issue to Amazon and they gave me a 50GBP partial refund (80 USD!) because of the faulty charger without having to ship anything back.
I just find it odd that theres many people that have the issue and nvidia doesn't seem to do anything about it either!

If i were you, i'll check with another charger doing normal stuff, if you still get negative charger maybe it could be your battery itself.

My guess is that a faulty cable or the charger itself is causing D+ and D- to not be shorted together by the charger, resulting in the tablet thinking it's charging from a USB port instead of a dedicated charger.
Does device status report charging state as Charging (USB) instead of Charging (AC)?
I admit I never even unwrapped the stock charger, I've got one of those nice Anker 40W 5-port chargers along with a bunch of 24/28AWG MicroUSB cables from Monoprice.

The charger appears as AC in settings, so it should be charging faster than it does.
I'm using a charger similar to what you use right now, a Dodocool 4 port charger that works great! However, I'm using the stock cable.
First make sure you are using stock charger and cable.
If you see discharge during non intensive activities you may have a defective charger. Nvidia has rma'd the charger by itself for people.
I have the same issue but my charging time is a bit better 3-4 hours. But what is really annoying that it makes a lot of electrical noise. I have a lot of things that I charge, but I have never heard this so load earlier. Its coming from the adapter, I can cleary hear from 3m. Anybody has similar issue? I try to record the sound, and send to nvidia. Maybe they will react.

I can confirm that this combo works a treat for my NST. I use it to simultaneously charge my G3, NST, N7 and some small LiPos. Fast charge.
Sorry to dig up this thread but I've had the same issue and i was WTF-ing like crazy until i switch the USB cable to a charging cable i got from a power bank... The charge time dropped from 6-7 hours to 2-3 hours. I'm not sure why, perhaps my cable is faulty or perhaps it was meant to charge like this, or perhaps it is supposed to be used to connect a controller only (both ends seem to have a controller icon on them)?

It's not due to the MicroUSB cable but due to a wallwart that's messing up the amperage I believe, as I've used the MicroUSB cable with other wallwarts and it charges normally then

You are correct. I charged the tablet at home 2 times this weekend and it's definitely an issue with the charger as it sometimes charges properly and sometimes it does not.

A bit hard to do since i got it from amazon.com when i was in the US (back in EU now) and there's no point in returning the tablet just for a semi faulty charger.

Contact amazon and tell them exactly about the issue, they'll compensate you for it probably. I got 50£ back from Amazon.co.uk for the broken charger, which is quite a bit of money.

Thanks for the tip, i'll give that a try
Well, same thing here. Just noticed it while using Skype. Battery dropped from 100% to 95% pretty quickly while charging.
I'm going to ask Amazon for another charger or compensation.
I have a 2.4A charger and still battery no good.
I lose around 2% per min of battery charge while idling with battery saving features on (2 cores shut off, CPU frequency set at 50% and Framerate locked at 30FPS) when ingame the battery drops 2-3 times faster. takes 2 hours to charge from 97% to 100% and 2 mins to lose that charge. I think I bought a Tablet that has a faulty battery as this is not acceptable. My tablet is unusable as the battery takes a couple of mins to lose 3% of charge and a couple of hours to regain the 3% charge only to lose that charge (and then some) when I try to use the tablet.
Wireless charging seems flaky at best. Sometimes, it works like a champ. Sometimes, my phone will stop charging, start charging, stop charging, start charging, etc. until I get annoyed, pick it up, and put it back on the charger. I left it on the charger overnight and found it at 87% this morning. I don't know if it wasn't charging properly that whole time, or if it got to 100% and then just stopped charging. Any tips on this? Anyone else having similar issues?
FYI - this is the Samsung charging pad and the phone with no case or anything on it.
No issues here. Work flawlessly
I'm also having the issue with wireless charging starting and stopping. My charging pad, however is an ebay qi pad. Seems very position dependent on both of the pads I was using successfully with my S3.
The behavior is that it will start charging, then 10 seconds to a minute later stop. Then start....then stop...
S6
I have the sony charging pad and I've noticed my S6 stops charging when I get any kind of notification...
No issues here
you shall use 2A chargers to be effective.
I do. I have an official Samsung 2A charger with an official Samsung USB cable attached to an official Samsung wireless charger.
I haven't paid attention to it throughout the day, but I did notice that if I place my phone on the wireless charger it seems to charge to 100% and then it will stop charging. I know a few nights ago the samsung puck was green when I fell asleep but in the morning when I woke up I was down to 92%. I will be taking the wireless charger with me to work tomorrow so I will know for sure if it stops charging at 100% or if it does what you are describing.
Both my gf and I bought our Galaxy s6 edge on release day at Bestbuy and with the preorder the wireless chargers we're included free. The past 2 nights both of our phones have had this issue. Mine only charged to 87% yesterday and 93% today. Hers was at 88% yestwrday and 96%today.
I'm curious if the wireless charger takes a much longer time to completely charge the device to 100%.
For me better wireless charger than wire... I think I've better battety life.
With wireless charging I use wire charger included.

It would be really great to turn those sounds off. Also, you have to assume that there's some battery level where it will restart wireless charging, right?

This is what I was hoping for when I said above that I saw it hit 100% and then overnight it drained to 92%. I would hope that if it falls below 97% or so that it would charge again to 100% so it keeps cycling but right now I am not sure if it does it.
I've noticed the exact same problem with mine. I got the free Samsung official wireless charger from Best Buy. The phone charges to 100% every night but when it finishes, usually around 3 or 4 a.m., it just stops charging and doesn't start again. So this means that every day when I wake up my phone has drained to around 90%. This never happened with my Nexus 5 on a generic wireless charger. It always kept it topped up until I remove the phone. This is really annoying.
BTW if you go into the settings menu under battery, you can see exactly when your phone stopped charging.

that sounds like the best reason untill i hear anything more concrete, might try charging tonight direct via the cable and see if it hits 100%
but with no replaceable battery they may have introduced this to prolong the life of the battery.
I totally get not overcharging. But it's got to kick back on at some point. Leaving your phone on a charger overnight should basically guarantee 100% in the morning. Maybe at 97% it could kick back on, or at 100%, it could go into a trickle mode. I'm sure some custom development will come along and fix this problem.
Here's hoping for an update or something through soon. Gonna test a full charge before tonight and see if it actually states it reaches 100%
I'll post what I find.

Hello,
I have had this tabled for a while and it was always charging extremely slowly but I never took it out of the house so it wasn't a bid deal for me. However I have given it to my mother and she uses it in other ways. Anyways, the note 10.1 is the slowest charging device I have ever seen. It takes probably 48h-72h to charge it completely. I am using the original cable and power brick, I have tried ALL the outlets in my house, I have tried using the computer, I have tried using another cable (probably like 5 different ones) and other bricks (from iPads, my note 5, etc) and nothing is working. I have seen other posts regarding slow charging but none of them solve my problem.
Thank you
Thats is not normal .
I would factory reset and flash a stock rom .
Swap battery or take to a service centre .

"probably"?
You can't troubleshoot perceptions and guesses. How long does it actually take--repeatably--to charge from what percentage to what percentage? (i.e. "Went to bed, battery was at 40%, charged overnight for 7 hours and battery was at 60%.")
There are apps to check charging current (Ampere being one of them).
The fastest charge you can get is with the OEM charger in an outlet, not a PC.
Understand that this is a 7,000mAh battery without any quick charging applied to it.
Additionally, if you are using the device whilst charging it, you aren't really charging it since the drain is about the same as the charge; you'll effectively neither charge nor discharge.
Finally, check for battery-draining apps; you might not have a charging problem but an app-drain problem.

The time varies, but it is between 2 and 3 days to charge from 0, never less.
I do use the OEM charger and cable and an outlet.
I do understand that but 2 days seems a bit of a stretch, don't you think?
I am definitely not using it while charging, because it's impossible. It just doesn't charge fast enough to be able to use it. It drains quicker than it charges.
I highly doubt that, I only have YouTube and Chrome installed on it.
Above 6 hours with stock rom and charger is abnormal .
Usual replies .
One cable
Two charger
Three battery or connections .
Four USB port
Five motherboard .

Yeah, 2 days isn't right. It also shouldn't be discharging faster than charging, especially with the OEM charger.
I leave mine plugged into my PC (only 500mA max current) with the screen on (about medium brightness, mostly black screen, which is most power-friendly for OLED) using LectureNotes all day and it will neither charge nor discharge (technically, it's charging at the same rate it is discharging); the percentage doesn't move.
What does Ampere report?
Do you have another charger you could try? any 5V and at least 2A would work.
Also, ensure your cable isn't intermittently open (a break in the cable, temporarily disconnecting the charger).
If the cable and charger are good, then the battery would be the next likely culprit, followed by the charging circuit.
Finally, ensure heat isn't an issue (is it in a case? remove it).
Mine was messed up but I concluded it was the port and cable. I got a new cable and then replaced the charging port and viola. Charge time went from 8 hours back to the usual 3-4

It should not take more than 2 hours. If it is saying slow them you've not connected the cables firmly into their ports. If you have, you have a defective phone or cord.
I doubt this is the issue but I just noticed that there is an option (settings -> battery -> advanced settings) to toggle "fast cable charging" on or off.
I think it is enabled by default but might be worth a look.
Have the same problem. Went to settings > battery > advanced settings... Unplugged my cable, turned off fast charging, plugged the cable in, unplugged it, turned on fast charging, plugged the cable in and it works now.
Slow Charging and Charging gets stuck
I have S8+ with me from last 10 days. Charging with original charger takes a very long time. Horrible. Moreover on reaching 80%, the charging stops even though charging emblem is active. I have to plug out the cable and re-insert and switch it on afresh, then it starts charging, of course slowly. A strange behaviour.

I am having exactly same problem. Also it has increased in past 2 days. Now it stops at 73% too sometimes. Also when my wireless charger came 3 days ago, it was unable to charge more than 3% in 20 minutes, and just stopped after that for more than 1.5 hours. I even took of s8+ from wireless charger dock and put in on again, but not charging after that.
The dealer i bought it from checked it infront of me, and it was charging properly upto 100 in his shop. But i checked it at my house and my shop, even at my friends home and its the same issue.
Right now trying to get a replacement. Dealer says that i have to talk to samsung through voiceover call, and fight them to get replacement or i wont get it. At the time of purchasing, he said he will do everything to get replacement if any issue comes up. Now says can only get replacement for first week, any longer than that and cant get it.
I paid 64,900rs for it and cant get replacement for a faulty phone within 15days. SAMSUNG SUCKS. Next time i will go for oneplus or xiaomi, cuz i may not get replacement there either but i will lose a lot less money.
you guys have something wrong, my S8+ charges 0-100% in about 1hour 45min.....and this is the normal charge speed, try another samsung original cable, maybe the cable head or the S8 port is damaged

There is something called swelling prevention mode where the phone stops charging when the battery temperature reaches a certain point..

I dont use my phone while charging. Also if i use it while charging it, it mostly doest even charges. Just remains at same percentage when i put it to charge.
It doesnt heat up. Remains pretty normal. Even if i play a game like mc5 while charging it at the same time it doesnt go up much in temperature.
I put my S8+ on the charger with 20% and the wife's Nexus 6 with 35% at the same time. Both are supposedly fast charge and the S8+ was at 100% 30 minutes before the Nexus 6. The S8+ has a 3500 battery and the Nexus 6 has a 3200 battery, I wouldn't call it slow charging.
I have the same problem. I can't remember if it started charging normally after unplugging the charger itself and then plugging it back in or after restarting the phone. One of those fixes it. Hoping for a fix from Samsung/Android soon!
Really odd. A reboot didn't fix the same issue for me. What fixed it was turning the charger around. I'm talking about the bit that goes into the phone. I was under the impression that with usb c it didn't matter which way the charger went into the phone. I've tried this several times and get the same result each time. Slow charge when plugged in one way and fast charge when charger plugged in upside down if that makes sense. Could I have a faulty charging cable? Or a faulty phone perhaps?

“This is a normal operating condition to prevent damage to the device.”
: While charging the S8/S8+, sometimes charging is stopped even when device is
not charged fully.
because
: During wireless or wired charging, the device and the charger may become hot.
For your safety, Samsung has applied charging algorithm to protect device
overheating.
If the device heats up or the ambient air temperature rises, the charging speed may
decrease or stop automatically.
In Samsung authorized wireless charger, cooling mechanism (such as cooling fan,
air hole…) is applied.
Wait for the device to cool down and then begin charging the device again.
