[Q] Phone not getting switched on after it fell in water - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
So my nexus 5 fell into swimming pool. I tried all the methods of drying up and it has been 5 days but still its not getting switched on. When I insert the charger, the battery shows 100% and when I try to power it on, the Google logo shows and then again the battery symbol keeps coming. Also, can't turn it on without putting the charger. Any idea, what all are damaged inside the phone?

um.. the whole phone? all the metal pieces, wires, curcuits, chips, etc.

after falling into a pool, yea. in only a rare case would you be able to save it. and thats only if you took the phone apart seconds after it fell into the pool, and you put those parts into and covered by rice.

Oh okay. that's sad. I will take it to service center tomorrow. Let's see what do they say.

I have some ideas for it. It's on my "under consideration" list. But I've never used my headset, so could take a while. What does the headset do in normal use? When not in a phone call, it doesn't do anything in any other app? When in a call, it toggles the phone?

I accidentally hit "THANKS".
You can try taking the phone apart and cleaning the parts with rubbing alcohol. Usually that will fix a water damaged phone. There are plenty of guides on YouTube on how to do so. Good luck.

Small world. I grew up in Glenview. Live in Northbrook now.

Wow this thread stayed on topic!
I have the Nex 4. (Buying the 5 this week) and mine went into the washing machine for about 1 minute until I realized it was in there.
It shut down and I thought I was f'd. But I immediately took it apart and unplugged the battery and dried everything I could physically and left it in rice 12 hours. I know that's not enough time but anyway it turned on the next day with vertical lines going up and down on boot up.
Then to my surprise after the boot up I had my phone working with all icons on all screens still in place. The problem though is the screen is now washed out. Colors are not clear and I need brightness set all the way up to see the screen.
The other problem is that when the screen times out or I turn the screen off myself, it may not turn back on. Just a faint backlit light comes on. If I keep hitting the power button to try to shut off the screen and back on, I keep getting the blank screen. One thing I found out recently is I don't have to do a battery disconnect to get things back. All I do is wait about two minutes, hit the power button and the screen turns back on. No shutdown needed.
Needless to say, I managed to fix what was almost a certain brick. It's been over a month and the phone is still going strong.
This week is definite purchasing of the 5. I can't wait.

I hear if you mix about 3 table spoons of salt into a litre of warm water and soak your phone in it for about 10 minutes then put it in the microwave on hi for 30 seconds it will remove all your dents and scratches!

Have you looked into PlastiDip? You can get it from Home Depot. It's a spray paint which dries into a rubber coating and you can easily remove it. I'd give it a shot.

Which is more difficult?

Trying to fly or trying to find your nexus on your bed in the dark?

Flying. I got a white cover for the NS.
My problem is that I have a white blanket and dark sheets, so if I leave it on the sheets it's face down. If I leave it on the blanket it has to be face up.

To move a dry screen protector, apply it using two 'handles' made of tape. Lift it and move it to your heart's content. Or use the hinge method.
I'm not saying the protector you got is any good, we might never know. But your review is kind of pointless. It's like painting a car with a paint roller because you're used to painting ceilings, then saying the paint sucks because your car looks like **** now.

But it really doesn't point out why you shouldn't buy it. We don't even know that it's crappy since your conclusion is based on improper use.

'You're doing it wrong' isn't very harsh. OP doesn't help the situation when he says 'I know I'm doing it wrong, that's why this thing sucks.' Definitely the wrong foot all around.

I quitted for 1 month.
I think it's hard to quit forever.
But when I really want to take a cigarette, I find some terrible pictures, focus on these picture, think very hard about it, then It works
It's important that you should think very seriously when looking at these pictures.

I smoke for 8 years.
I know most smokers already know the risk.
But at the very moment that they decide to take a cigarette, this understanding gone, they only think about satisfication.
So I bring this understanding return to them, by showing some very terrible picture can reduce that addiction at this moment.
I know it's not enough. But it can gain something INSTANTLY.
Howlong did you smoke johny? Would you quit?
Smoked about 3-4 years. Quit about 6 months ago and I feel fricken great. But I do use smokless tobacco. So I didnt really quit. I coild quit dip as the addiction isnt even close to cigs. But I enjoy it and ill do it for a little bit longer.

[Q] Core magically working again... any explanations?

So the other day, I decided I wanted to remove root on my Core for once and for all, and fired up Odin.
And being the idiot I am, I selected "NAND erase all" and allowed it to finish, smiling stupidly. Surprise, the phone refused to boot up. It wasn't even stuck in the bootloop: it would just start off with the "Samsung" flourish, then the "SAMSUNG" would glow back and forth. I waited for the booting to finish. I gave it ten minutes, an hour, and eventually the whole night; no dice.
I realised my blunder. I took it to a small service center I know, and asked him whether he could fix it. He tried quite hard for a week, and eventually gave up. I took it back from him and decided to take it to a Samsung center. Note, status so far is unchanged. The phone managed to run out of battery waiting for the boot to finish.
Now for the weird twist. While I had it at home today, sitting aside nicely switched off, it magically switched itself on. I was puzzled to see it starting up, but even more bewildered when it started initial setup- as good as new!
So my question: Should I start believing in good gremlins? Or does someone out there "know this feel" and have an explanation?
Looking forward to any theories that would explain this. And if nothing, well... gremlins.
EDIT: I wanted to remove root because I had got myself a Nexus 4 (Yes, yes, I know, quite a big leap) and wanted to pass this on to a cousin. Thought I'd clean up all data and then go about it
