Hello everyone, I have my Nexus 5and am using the 8sms messaging app as I prefer it over Hangouts. However as this is the first non HTC phone I have had for years, I would like to be able to put the stock HTC messaging app onto my Nexus 5. Now I have rooted phones before but find I quite like my nexus as is.
So my question is, to do the above will I need to root my Nexus or will I be able to find the HTC messaging app posted somewhere then just download and install it as I would with an app from the Play Store. Or is it not possible to run the HTC messaging app on the Nexus?
When I have rooted in the past it was only to be able to try a couple of differant roms and to use apps like Titanium Backup. I am not too technically minded so need an idiots guide really. I would be able to unlock the bootloader and root the phone no problem, it is finding the file for HTC messaging and putting it on the phone I will have problems with.
All suggestions will be recieved with thanks
Cheers
Nexus04
Download a stock-based HTC rom of your choice then pull the SMS app out. Then install as a normal APK.
Hi thanks for the reply. So if I find the stock HTC ROM should I download it to my PC then find the messaging SDK then just plug in my nexus 5 and copy it across to the phone? Or is it a little more complicated than that?

Yes it's as simple as that.
Assuming that the downloaded rom is a zip file, open it normally (without extracting) via 7zip or any zip extractor, find the messaging apk file which is usually inside the system folder, then drag the file to any location in your PC, then copy to your phone and install.
Make sure you're not using ART. I encountered problems in the past doing this on ART.

Ok I headed over to the HTC One S forum (this is my previous phone) and tried to find a stock rom to download but all the links I have tried so far do not seem to work. Would a custom rom use the stock messaging app or would they use a custom one like 8sms? All the links to stock roms I have tried have failed so far. I dont know if it is because the roms i am looking at are old but am not having any luck here.
Like I said I need an idiot proof guide as these processes do not come easy for me. I presume on my phone I would drag the messaging apk(if I find it lol) into the system folder then just select it as the messenger of choice in settings?

What doesn't work? The messaging.apk you copied? or the zip file?
Err, I'm pretty sure it'd take a bit more than just copying the apk. I would imagine its very much incorporated into sense...

Yep. Needs frameworks probably. It wouldn't work even on a pure aosp rom on a HTC device... Historically that was always the case anyway

I never had a chance to do this on a non-nexus device so I'm downloading a stock htc rom to try it myself.
My apologies :/
Thanks for the input guys. Could you send me a link to the Stock HTC rom you are downloading because all the links I have been trying have failed so far. I cannot find one that will download without failing or error messages, very frustrating as I have spent hours looking through the varios HTC phone forums and cant find one link that will download sucessfully to my pc. I dont know if its my internet connection

I would like it if someone could tell me how to get/use a custom rom boot cause I really want one and haven't the slightest idea cause I'm tired of seeing the sprint 4g start up lol.

Well if you are rooted, then go donwload one of the many custom boots on this site. Download the bootanimation.zip (and sound file if its included) to your phone. Then go grab a program like astro or root explorer and copy and paste the 2 files into /system/media. I've done it this way a few times and have never had a problem. Next time though you should use the search feature im pretty sure theres a whole thread dedicated to it.
I searched for help first but they didn't explain it the way you did. I'm going to try your method. I hope it works, I wonder if someone could make one for me..

Then you shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place if you don't know at least ONE of those.
I haven't tried either, all I know is that one uses the computer and the other has something to do with terminal and a bunch of codes, which is easier and I rooted my phone just fine, I'm learning..

it all depends on what you have I have the evo with froyo 2.2 android on it and was told it cant be rooted but i followed a video on youtube and got mine rooted you don't actualy have to flash the whole rom to get a new animation booted... just root your phone depending on what you have... i used the unrevoked method follwing a youtube video of course with windows i had to install the hboot usb thing on my evo anyways i got it rooted and the unrevoked site is just one click i got the software from unrevoked dot com... download the unrevoked 3 for whatever operating system your running on your PC... hook it up to your PC watch the youtube video tutorials they will help... don't just watch one though i spent a whole 2 weeks reasearching everything i could to root it... just incase i failed i knew how to undo it from my research... the unrevoked method worked for me... and i havn't been limited to anything i got the free tethering got full premissions i have custom lock screen and boot screen.. anyways go to the site download that theres several other files you will need like the hbooter software if your rooting the evo.. i'm not giving a tutorial on this because i spent to much time myself and knowing what i know would take this whole website to type up. ok so
back to the boot screens.. the site unrevoked is just one click... litteraly start it up with the files all ready and it'll do the rest including rebooting your phone and loading into recovery everything, now you will not loose everything, i did the root and lost nothing but just incase because there is always the chance of errors... get an app called astro... to back up all of your installed apps and an app called MIQ to backup your contacts, calandar, notes, everything basicly on your phone besides apps... on a website create a profile to upload too and then get one more app called SMS backup to backup all of your text messages outbox and inbox and you can restore it all later if for anyreason something is lost.. these are all free apps... now after it roots your phone it will install the clock work rom or w.e. i guess it does flash your phone with a rom but its pretty much the same exact thing and when i did it i lost nothing everything was still installed. if you have the correct files on your computer in the C drive on the root of the C drive... the directory you should have for the files you need to download are "C:\android" and thats it.. anyways again just root the phone then download an app called boot animation changer lite....
with boot animation changer lite all you need to do is have a rooted phone.. scroll through what you like and preview them and if you want it then tap it and choose your screen for me on the evo i chose "480x800" i don't know if thats the wrong one or causes problems but it hasn't failed yet its working good and looks fantastic
I used the exact same way to root my phone, I too used a youtube video and did a lot of research before doing something crazy. I got the app your reffered to me and it worked pretty good (thank you!) But now I want to figure out how to use adb or how to push boot roms from this site onto my phone and 480x800 was the correct size..I think. Your help was very descriptive and I like that. So can anyone help describe the adb method and or the push method so I can learn how to use the boots from this site? Please and thank you in advance.

First - Do you have the EVO drivers, and the Android SDK installed on your computer? This is needed in order to utilize ADB.
If not:
ANDROID SDK
Some of the bootanimations have been made available in a flashable zip that you can install from recovery.
If you are talking about the ones that were installed during the root process under /android then yes, so how would I go about using that to install the boots?
Sent from HTC EVO 4G via xda app
OK then.
Place the bootanimation.zip, and (optional mp3 file)
Open a command prompt and cd to wherever you have your TOOLS folder in the SDK.
ex) cd c:/AndroidSDK/tools
Then you mount the device, and can push the files to your phone to this directory:
/system/customize/resource/
ex) :
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource/
adb push SPC_animation_final.mp3 /system/customize/resource/
Then simply reboot through adb:
adb reboot
NOTE: If the bootanimation you are switching to DOES NOT have sound then you need to remove the SPC_animation_final.mp3 from /system/customize/resource/
DONESIES!
I searched for this and couldn't find anything really. Sorry if this isn't the place for it but I am new here, and like the video says I'm a NOOB.
Well I just rooted and I am now running CyanogenMod 7 on my HTC Incredible.
I've tried many browsers and I always went back to the stock browser that came on the phone. But now that it's running Cyanogen it is gone and I beliece running Chrome (which I hate)
I did back up my phone before root. I have extracted the apk from the backup, but it won't let me install it on Cyanogen.
Is there a way to do this? Like an override?
Or can I edit the apk somehow to be able to run on Cyanogen as a new browser? What I mean here is like create a new program, separate, such as Opera where I can just install the apk like that. Hope that makes sense.
Thank you in advance.

I want the HTC browser also. Having the worst time figuring it out.
Same here.. Htc browser rocks but want it on CM7..
Does anyone know about this?
You can try unzipping the ROM and placing the apk in the correct spot then zip it back up before flashing it. Not sure if the browser is locked down like "sense". If that is the case then nothing will work.
You can't just move the apk. It relies on the Sense framework which is HEAVILY integrated into HTC ROMs. This has been an age old question, "How can I get _______ on [non-HTC ROM]?"
I forgot to mention that I tried just placing it there. I know that doesn't work, but it was at least worth a try.
Is there any way to edit the apk? I have no idea how to do this, but if I can possibly do it can someone direct me where to go/what to do? .....or do it for me?
Not that I would pay for Hulu, but I watch their free content sometimes. This is a travesty.
yea I noticed this yesterday too...disappointing.
HULU works on the skyrocket........
just use one of the deodexed roms(like this one-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341616), which will let you edit the libs of the Flashplayer. use the Libflashplayer.so hack that is on xda replace it and give it the proper premission and BAM!!!! you got hulu
have been watching hulu on my phone since melvin dropped his first rom.
if for some reason you just cant manage to find the Hack i will post it up for you and give credit to the Dev.

I know that but what I consider stock is a ROM that hasn't been messed with at all.
I normally run Cyanogen Mod 7 but it's not available yet.
No, I don't like the crap bloatware apps.
Thing is, I will not die without Hulu and it's not enough reason for me to grab the first thing that comes along and install it.
I am actually enjoying the stock rom on this phone. Can't do everything I am used to but, I have to say that it's been pretty nice.
I will likely consider Cyanogen when it comes out for this phone but I am going to have to think pretty hard at this point. That rom has caused nothing but issues for me on multiple phones in regards to GPS which I rely on quite a bit. I know there are fixes and I got my GPS working after a lot of hassle on my Evo but never had success fixing it on my Inspire. Been nice having my GPS working without an issue on my Skyrocket. So... At this point, I just don't want to mess with the stock rom until I have a chance to evaluate it more.
My phone is rooted and that seemed to be all I needed to edit the needed files in the past but I guess not in this case.
Didn't Hulu come out recently and say they are supporting all Android devices now or was that Netflix?

I agree the Stock rom on the SR is great thats why im not even worried about not having 5 or 6 roms to choose from. i thinks its pretty nice as is. but i like to be able to edit certain files. and i think all you need it root explorer and you CAN edit pretty much everything on the phone.
but i didnt notice that you cant edit the build.prop, or the libs. i had to pull the build prop and edit on my comp and push it back.
and CM7 is a buggy nice little rom one of those things were you deal with the problems cuz its so damn nice. same with miui.

What did you change in the build.prop? The manufacturer, the model screen settings? I have done this on multiple devices including my Honeycomb tablet. My HoneyComb tablet (Acer A100) is running stock rom and I know I was able to edit the build.prop on that just using ES Explorer.
Let me know what to change and I will give it a whack, after backing up the build.prop file and making a nandroid

may i ask what files you are seeing in the Lib folder on the com.adaobe.flashplayer.
you shouuld have four files in there already right? i have seen it where it is empty sometimes and that means this wont work. ALSO if you unistall flash and reinstall flash 11 it repopulate the lib folder and i have had luck with this as well. once you get it will stick though. you wont have to this every reboot or anything.

I copied that .so file from the .apk into the lib folder and it works now. It appears the only time that the app FC itself is when it tries to launch another app. I'm guessing probably because it is trying to look for the Samsung app.

There have been a lot of users with issues installing and uninstalling Google Now for ICS. This is my solution for those users.
This is only an installer for the many different variations of Google Now that were created in this news worthy thread: The Google Now for ICS Project
This installer allow user of different types of roms and devices to quickly install Google Now to see if it works for them and if it does not, it allows these users to restore their original Google Search.
This thread is not and will not be about issues with specific modded Google Now apks, go here: The Google Now for ICS Project for that. I have no problem incorporating new apks into the installer. But I will not attempt to deal with issues outside of the installer.
Testing(Green = working, Red = not working)
(Need more people to test as many different devices, roms, and recoveries)
Devices
HTC EVO 3D
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Roms
OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_2.89.651.2-2.17.651.5
Tranquility rls1b
Recoveries
CWM 5.0.2.0
TWRP s-on
So if you experience any issues, I will attempt to help, but understand that I if you are not setup the exact same, I may not know what is wrong.
Touch recovery is not active in this aroma installer, so use up and down to make a selection and the power button to confirm the selection.
Requirements
Rooted
ICS
CWM (only recovery tested, others may work, you let me know)
Instructions(should already know this, but here you go)
1. Transfer .zip to the root of your sd card
2. Boot into recovery
3. Select "install zip from sdcard"
4. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
5. Select "GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
6. Select "Install GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
Once the installer is up, the rest should be self explanatory, if not just follow the prompts.
I hope this helps someone.

Google Now for ICS Installer v1.1
I havent been following google now lately, but it seems that you're using stock rooted ics on evo where this works. is this also true for touchwiz phones?
will it work on stock rooted samsung?
Just checked it out on my HTC EVO 4g LTE running tranquility rls1b and TWRP s-on, works great back and forth. Thanks!

It should work on any ICS phone, but it has only been tested on the phone listed in the 1st post.
jdcasino confirms that it works on his HTC EVO 4g LTE.

yes, but if I remember correctly, touchwiz differs from sense in framework files or something. I have epic 4g touch. can anyone else confirm that google now can work on stock rooted touchwiz phone if /system space wasn't an issue?

Sure, give it a try.
edit: there may be an issue with the Installer not finding the original Google Search apk, someone posted this and basically it states that you may have a some extra characters at the end of the apk.

I don't think it has anything to do with sense or touchwiz, the modified Google Now was modded for AOSP, which doesn't have either, but has worked on HTC and Samsung.

Since it won’t let me post to the forum I thought I would just do it this way. On my Verizon S3 I’m rooted, unlocked, OTA kernel, running a stockish rom (cleanrom) and CMW 6.0.1.2. The installer said it worked but it broke Google search. In the installer it said everything was fine but nope. I went to do the restore and it said it couldn’t find the backup so I went with the one provided and that worked fine. When setting up I chose the first one which I think was v7 for arm7. If I chose wrong I’ll try again but otherwise I’ll just wait for an updated version. Unlike others I’m in no hurry and was just testing it out on my phone. If you want more info I can try to install it again and try to provide whatever you might need or want.

What do you mean by it broke Google Search (what were the indications that it did not work)?
When you restored did Google Search work again?
Check if you hae the follow "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" in your "/system/app"
Are there other files with this same name?

How much space does it state that you have free in the /system directory?
It would seem that you don't have enough space in your /system directory of your internal memory.
One thing to try to see if this is the case, when you do it manually, don't modify or add any files to /system/usr/srec/ directory
larva_pro said:
if i go to settings>storage its says
Device memory: Total 1.97GB ; available 1.3GB.
i did installed manually with out changing nothing on the /system/usr/srec . and im able to opent he register of google now.. as soon i click im'in
it close and dont show nothing.
in the notification bar i get cards notification but if i click to open it it close again. i cant see any card. nor command .....nothing.

To get the total /system directory size you need to run the following command in a program like "Terminal Emulator" or "aShell":
df /system

Yes I have that GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in /system/app and yes it is without the _usa after it. On the line under it it has the odex version. Then the Google search widget apk and odex. It is this way with before and after I try to install.
Just tried it again choosing mikeyxda v7 it says created backup ok and return status 0. Google now installed return status 0 once the phone boots up it says “unfortunately, Google search has stopped”. I also get that message no matter how i try to search or tap on the google app it puts on it. Double checked the permissions from the main thread and all permissions are set right, if that helps. Went to restore and it says I never backed it up but I can use the generic one which I select and get again return status 0 for everything and once the phone comes back up Google search works just fine again. Hope this helps.

That's good to know. I see that the problem has to do with your system being odexed.
The reason it FCs is because when replacing the Google Search apk there is no matching modified odex.
This is modified for deodexed roms.
Check on this thread and ask about a modified odexed velvet.apk and velvet.odex

I'm using GN on an odexed ICS ROM, no problems. Just had to delete the *.odex files for the apk's that the installer replaces.
