How do I use a custom rom boot. - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

I would like it if someone could tell me how to get/use a custom rom boot cause I really want one and haven't the slightest idea cause I'm tired of seeing the sprint 4g start up lol.
Sent from HTC EVO 4G via xda app

Well if you are rooted, then go donwload one of the many custom boots on this site. Download the bootanimation.zip (and sound file if its included) to your phone. Then go grab a program like astro or root explorer and copy and paste the 2 files into /system/media. I've done it this way a few times and have never had a problem. Next time though you should use the search feature im pretty sure theres a whole thread dedicated to it.

I searched for help first but they didn't explain it the way you did. I'm going to try your method. I hope it works, I wonder if someone could make one for me..

I'm lost, I can't really find the boot roms I saw before, I feel dumb but I am a noob lol.

Then you shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place if you don't know at least ONE of those.

I haven't tried either, all I know is that one uses the computer and the other has something to do with terminal and a bunch of codes, which is easier and I rooted my phone just fine, I'm learning..
Sent from HTC EVO 4G via xda app

it all depends on what you have I have the evo with froyo 2.2 android on it and was told it cant be rooted but i followed a video on youtube and got mine rooted you don't actualy have to flash the whole rom to get a new animation booted... just root your phone depending on what you have... i used the unrevoked method follwing a youtube video of course with windows i had to install the hboot usb thing on my evo anyways i got it rooted and the unrevoked site is just one click i got the software from unrevoked dot com... download the unrevoked 3 for whatever operating system your running on your PC... hook it up to your PC watch the youtube video tutorials they will help... don't just watch one though i spent a whole 2 weeks reasearching everything i could to root it... just incase i failed i knew how to undo it from my research... the unrevoked method worked for me... and i havn't been limited to anything i got the free tethering got full premissions i have custom lock screen and boot screen.. anyways go to the site download that theres several other files you will need like the hbooter software if your rooting the evo.. i'm not giving a tutorial on this because i spent to much time myself and knowing what i know would take this whole website to type up. ok so
back to the boot screens.. the site unrevoked is just one click... litteraly start it up with the files all ready and it'll do the rest including rebooting your phone and loading into recovery everything, now you will not loose everything, i did the root and lost nothing but just incase because there is always the chance of errors... get an app called astro... to back up all of your installed apps and an app called MIQ to backup your contacts, calandar, notes, everything basicly on your phone besides apps... on a website create a profile to upload too and then get one more app called SMS backup to backup all of your text messages outbox and inbox and you can restore it all later if for anyreason something is lost.. these are all free apps... now after it roots your phone it will install the clock work rom or w.e. i guess it does flash your phone with a rom but its pretty much the same exact thing and when i did it i lost nothing everything was still installed. if you have the correct files on your computer in the C drive on the root of the C drive... the directory you should have for the files you need to download are "C:\android" and thats it.. anyways again just root the phone then download an app called boot animation changer lite....
with boot animation changer lite all you need to do is have a rooted phone.. scroll through what you like and preview them and if you want it then tap it and choose your screen for me on the evo i chose "480x800" i don't know if thats the wrong one or causes problems but it hasn't failed yet its working good and looks fantastic

I used the exact same way to root my phone, I too used a youtube video and did a lot of research before doing something crazy. I got the app your reffered to me and it worked pretty good (thank you!) But now I want to figure out how to use adb or how to push boot roms from this site onto my phone and 480x800 was the correct size..I think. Your help was very descriptive and I like that. So can anyone help describe the adb method and or the push method so I can learn how to use the boots from this site? Please and thank you in advance.

First - Do you have the EVO drivers, and the Android SDK installed on your computer? This is needed in order to utilize ADB.
If not:
ANDROID SDK
Some of the bootanimations have been made available in a flashable zip that you can install from recovery.

If you are talking about the ones that were installed during the root process under /android then yes, so how would I go about using that to install the boots?
Sent from HTC EVO 4G via xda app

OK then.
Place the bootanimation.zip, and (optional mp3 file)
Open a command prompt and cd to wherever you have your TOOLS folder in the SDK.
ex) cd c:/AndroidSDK/tools
Then you mount the device, and can push the files to your phone to this directory:
/system/customize/resource/
ex) :
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource/
adb push SPC_animation_final.mp3 /system/customize/resource/
Then simply reboot through adb:
adb reboot
NOTE: If the bootanimation you are switching to DOES NOT have sound then you need to remove the SPC_animation_final.mp3 from /system/customize/resource/
DONESIES!

ya i forgot to install busybox the first time so i tried for another day straight got back in and then deleted this like a idiot.. the offical FB app still works from market but I cant sync anyones facebook to my contacts atm.
Dont know if you tried
Get the loop.bat and it makes it pretty easy to get in
sometimes I have to do it 2 or 3 times but thats about the most it takes me to get into adb.
try it, it made rooting this phone the easiest root method on any phone I rooted so far.
did a 3g fender
a bunch of moto droids and one N1
I tried to post the bat file but its not working so here's my second method for you
Open a text program and paste all this in it then save it as loop.bat
:TOP
adb shell
GOTO TOP
This will make it easy to get into recovery for you
watch for the error to show up then you know you got it then you hit
ctrl+c to stop it
I had to use the loop.bat file to get adb in recovery, content for now until someone figures out how to unlock NAND protection.

Did the same thing. Downloaded that file and it won't let me install it tho.???? Any suggestions?

just wait for the nand unlock and all will be well then

I downloaded the file, can someone please explain how to install it using ADB?

After rooting your phone...

What were the first 3 things you did to your phone? Did you install applications that require root and if so what were they? Did you get ClockworkMod Recovery installed and backed up your phone? Just curious to see what everyone did right after rooting your phones.
For me I did the following:
1) Installed ClockworkMod Recovery & backed up my phone
2) Installed Titanium Backup Pro (why does it only show 5 things and not all apps?)
3) Installed ShootMe
For titanium you have to update busybox, you click fix or something I forget but after the update you will see everything

the only thing i have done is used it to disable the apps that came on it .. not show in the app list and keeps it from running but gets the updates still if they get one .. figured it was better than removing them since there really wasnt a recovery or restore or other rom to flash again if something goes wrong from an uninstalled app or something .. it has enough memory anyhow.
Setting up adb was a pain in the ass due to the given drivers dont install ... there is some code that you have to copy/paste into the inf file(that wasnt in the guide) for the mytouch 4g.
other than that .. havent done anything .. im waiting till the something solid comes out ... not a big fan of rom manager .. havent tried titanium .. i really did like armon ra recovery .. hope he makes one for this thing.
This is what I did.

Hmmm I'm not all to familiar with ADB yet but I have had to use it to turn S back on after getting it OFF with the rooting process and the driver installed that was on the sd card without problem (I'm assuming seeing as I needed the driver in order to complete the process... again I'm new to it all).
Quick question how can I check it again to make sure I have adb set up right?
*edit* just to make sure I have it right, and correct me if I am wrong, I connected my phone to the computer started a command prompt, typed in "adb devices" and it showed "List of devices attached, HT0********* device" - so is it fair to say I have adb installed correctly?
I also went to my device manager and seen *Android USB Devices and then under it MY HTC - so I'm guessing that is the name the HTC driver took when I installed it.
Again, I am sharing this as a peace of mine to myself and maybe someone else that is new to the process like myself (but learning thanks to every one of you all here) that is just wanting to make sure its done right.

hmmm you cant open the command prompt and hit adb devices and there it is from what i know .. you have to cd into it first .. which would be the default of cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools (if you put the SDK folder into the root of your C: on your comp) .. then you can type adb devices and you should see yours there and then adb shell and I usually do a "su" as well ..
if ya really want to test it out type in reboot and the phone will restart ... but if you see the list of devices that should be confirmation enough really

glad it worked for ya ..
another thing to try if you have not done so yet is to try something like this in the terminal or thru adb.
pm disable com.tmobile.apppack <hit enter>
you should get a message saying something like new status disabled .. and not just killed
then go into menu/settings/applications/manage applications/all/ and find the one that says "com.android.providers.applications" hit that and then force close .. this will restart the launcher to show the change and that damn app pack that comes preloaded that you cant uninstall will be gone from the applications.
However .. this DOES NOT uninstall them it just keeps the icon from showing up in your apps and prevents it from running but will still get the automatic updates if there is one for it .. how damn cool is that
if you are in adb hit pm list package and it will show you all of the com.names of all the apps on the phone and you can type whatever you want using the pm disable thing like about to remove it from the app list but without unstalling them.
if you want to enable them then its just pm enable whatever app name here.

I need help with roms

I cannot flash roms or kernel. It won't boot recovery!!! I have stock rooted shift. How do I make a custom recovery? And install roms and kernel
Probably the easiest way is to download ROM manager from the market. The first option in the app is flash clockworkmod. Very fast and automagic. Have fun! Happy flashing.
I have that and kernel manager. Flashed it twice after it didn't work the first time. It hangs up on the HTC boot logo after I try to boot recovery
turn off your phone
power it on while holding vol down.
does the first line say S-OFF or S-ON?

I looked for the commands in development and couldn't find. I'm trying to turn s off. I don't care so much about perm or temp root right now as long as I get that annoying s on to be s off. Lmao. I need commands please!!! Assume I have no access to a computer!

Alright I have that, now its not explained there but in order to do that via the terminal do I need to dl the framework and sdk to my phone? I do not have a running computer right now. the commands given in that thread is the exact ones you would need, but since you're using a terminal emulator in your phone, you don't need adb.
do step 1
skip step 2
do step 3,4,5 via your terminal
do step 6
extra points:
once you're perma-rooted, you can go straight to installing Rom Manager, and flash clockworkrom that way.
then reboot your phone to recovery, and do a nandroid backup.
once that's done, you're all set.

When the perm root method was finally developed I was at work with no access to a PC. I ended up rooting via phone terminal just because I couldn't bear to wait a couple hours until I got home.

Could someone explain step 1 and 3 for me if I'm using android terminal emulator. I tried it but nothing happened. My device is temprooted. I download the file into the download folder. I use root explorer to extract it... where?? I tried a couple places even the root folder (Its not in SD card) then once its good how do I check the md5 from the terminal. I type Su to get permission then what? The string in the post doesn't seem to do anything no matter how I type it. Or maybe I just don't know the command. I'm fairly new to this kinda thing. :/
That's awesome. I'm feeling the same way. I don't want to wait for a computer it might be a few weeks I'm impatient now lol

[Q] Rooting Completely via ADB

I have adb set up correctly and drivers installed. When I use command prompt on Windows 7 64 bit and type in "adb devices" it lists a string of letters/numbers and after that it says device. When I type in adb push rage /sdcard/ the command prompt moves the cursor to a new blank line and I can't type anything in. Is this normal? Phone is HTC EVO shift 4G running stock 2.3.3 and HTC sense 2.1. Again comp OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Yes the rage file is in the /platform-tools folder. Any ideas on if this is normal/alternative rooting methods (excluding ShiftRR and other comp programs. I checked them all. No apps either. They don't work, I've tried them all.) If it helps I'm following the guide at: wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Evo_Shift_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
1) Rage doesnt work on 2.3.3, it was a froyo exploit. I suggest either using the script I made to automatically do it for you if you want or you can do it manually.
2) The auto root method that I created is located at the link --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277793
3) Manual method is in general section.
Thanks bunches. I'm going to try your script next time I try. I'm usually kinda busy. And does your script need any additional files? This is gonna sound like a n00b question but it's because I AM a n00b. What the heck is RUU? It sounds like an EXE file I dl on my comp and run. Correct or not? Sorry if this has been asked anywhere else but I have been searching since August trying to find a rooting method and now that one is close I'm impatient.
It includes everything you need. Just extract everything to a single folder then run Fre3atlast.bat
An RUU is an official way to "update" firmware on your phone in either PG06IMG.zip or .exe format so you were correct. The script even gives you a link to download the format of your choice.

No there is currently no one touch root tool for the shifts that are on 2.3.3 because you have to physically push an image to misc.partition, but once you get it downgraged then you can use like ShiftRR and let that root for you,hit up the stickie section for all the info needed
If the downgrade thread by scary isnt a stickie yet it needs to be and it would be located in development section....btw thanks for not starting a new thread

Wait, if the .zip file can be used to "update" a phone, why not put a custom recovery.img and everything else in it and update that way? Sorry if this is a stupid question just don't flame me please.
It's not S-off, just doesnt version check. It needs the signature to be verified and without the HTC private keys, that doesnt work.

His script will temp root and push the exploit allowing you to use the RUU which will downgrade to Froyo. Once you run the RUU use either the CM wiki or use THIS guide to root.
Where do I start the guided at? Since the script temproots, does that mean I start the wiki at flashing the HBOOT?

Thanks that's what I thought to.
Ok, so my phone got an OTA update, and I updated. Then I went to downloads, and redownloaded it. Is it still signed? If it is, is there any way I can use that to root my phone? I can upload the file to 4shared if need be.
1) until you can verify that you can root again after taking an OTA, you NEVER update. 2) Just try and run the script again, then try to downgrade.
1: I thought it was ICS
2: I mean modify the OTA update zip file.

[Q] Is a PC needed?

I got a friend at work that wants me to mod his Triumph. I was able to root it using gingerbreak.apk but I can't get wireless tether to work. He also would like a theme. Soooo....
Do I need a computer to put CWM on his phone? I read that all you do is replace something in the folder of the recovery.
So, could I use root explorer to replace the recovery and reboot?
I really wanna put CM7 on his phone so he can use the theme chooser app and use themes off the market, sorry if I didn't search enough but its not my phone and I don't wanna spend much time with it.
Theoretically I should be able to have CM7 on there in 10min?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

You access the folder with the recovery.img in download mode. So you need a computer to do that.
I wrote a guide with step by step instructions over at androidforums.com in the all things root section for the Triumph. I would recommend that you check that out.
