What do you think about the phone now? and What did you thought about this phone when you bought it?
Average phone, definitely not top of the line performance.
Software features (sense and all) are good, but the device lacks the performance punch that it should have.
Hardware quality is above average as well.
After ICS, although the overall UI feel is less sluggish, the phone has lost its performance, specially while playing HD videos.
I would say, not that well supported by the company, specially in India.
Final word: Not buying again from HTC.

the Sensation is a good phone, no doubt. the only thing I dislike about it is the way the antennas are built into the back case...
A phone that was underspecd from the start. Less RAM than the competition, unbelievably lacking in storage, and S3 was the worst SoC of the 2011 dual core generation. Lag city. Many people avoid new S4 phones just because their experience with an S3 phone was so bad (which sucks, because S4 is actually a good SoC aside from the GPU). The mono block design turned out to be a sham, and instead we got a completely removable back that led to radio issues and a death grip problem worse than most phones. Add to that power button problems and dust under the screen, and I'm wondering where this HTC build quality is that I based my decision to get this phone on.
The good? The camera is pretty good. The qHD resolution was above average at the time. I find the 4.3" format factor perfect. Visually I think the Sensation is one of the best looking phones of all time. I would enjoy it if I didn't have high standards, and I simply can't stand how much it lags and how hard the screen is to see outside.

Screen is hard to see outside I agree but the worst issue for me it's speaker sound is horrible...
Camera does a good job in daylight low lights aren't so good however,
At the time I bought it, it was indeed a good phone but I think that now there are much much better phone's out in the market..
I think it still does a decent job performance wise and I don't face laggs
Now I think this phone is getting old and I should buy something new but the development is quite good so I'll stay for a while.
Last thing : battery is sh*t even whit extended battery's..

I got this phone a few weeks ago because it was cheap and has a removable battery/sd card (as opposed to the newer ONE series).
What I like about it - Feels good in my hand (weight, robustness, etc), the haptic feedback is much better than the competitors', a large community and many ROMs to explore, battery life (with an aftermarket battery).
Don't like - Screen viewing angle is narrow, a bit too big (I prefer screens 4 inch and under for a phone).
All in all - It's a decent phone for it's price.
That's my opinion.
There are some better ones now, but it holds up well against many others!
It's a cool phone. S3 is a decent processor, I don't find it to be the worst of 2011 though. From experience, I would say it goes Samsung's Exynos 2011 > S3 > Whatever the hell OMAP was out at the time > Tegra2.
Sense is just too slow, that's the problem. I don't mean a bloat issue, I've debloated Sense - removing about 200MB of uselessness out of Sense and it doesn't speed up. Forget Sense 4 being "much lighter than previous versions" too. It's not - it's just that the first phones to have it feature S4 processors that keep up really well. Check out a video of the One V - same old Sense.
Take the S3 processor and slap on some AOSP like CM or AOKP, and the phone flies.
The best phone in the world imo.

I actually got this phone as a replacement for mytouch 4g out of warranty so i only paid $5 for it. I gotta say i really love it, I don't have battery issues (lasts me a full day), no lag (senseless), its fast to me. Definitely not the best with new phones coming out every month, but i like it
When I first got this phone, I was completely underwhelmed. It lagged hard on stock gingerbread, had zero aosp support, signal was poor, wifi deathgrip was almost a deal breaker and battery life was crap. Add in sense restarts every other day and I was ready to return my phone for... a G2X. Lol!
Nowadays, ICS has improved the battery life a lot and our devs have come a long way in making the Sensation smoother and more attractive. So I guess I don't hate my Sensation like I used to, but I rather like it now. It's not the fastest phone out there, but it does what I need it to do. Poor signal and deathgrip are still there, but meh whatever. I like my Sensation enough to stick with it until my contract is up.
Not the best phone, but has a wealth of rom support. I have a Samsung galaxy s2 that's just sitting on the shelf because I enjoy the Rom support on the sensation more than actual hardware difference.

its a good phone overall but the things that make me hate it are the antennas because of the deathgrip issue and also the speakers are too quiet.
Thanks to the roms and mods available I still love my sensation! I get bored with one thing I just change it! Love the fact It's highly customizable ! After rooting I really started to love it again thanks to the developers !

Advantage: Bigger screen, Rom customization, multi tasking. Awesome HTC interface!!
Disadvantge: Battery is not good, back cover problem.
Comparing to any android phone out there, Sensation is top notch.
I've waited 4 months for this phone to come out after hearing/seeing rumors everywhere that finally an 4.3in Android phone is coming out on T-Mobile.
I love it, still till this day after using it for 1 year, I love this phone. The battery is awesome if you install custom roms/kernels plus the anker battery.
Love the screen size and resolution. Form factor; love it, slim and tall.
It's still not as smooth as Samsung phones, but **** with AOSP roms, and overclocked kernels and custom roms, you'll get there.
Cons, RAM ****ing seriously HTC? 768MB of ram meanwhile the GalaxyS2 has 1GB? The dust underneath the glass.
Other than that, love the fact that the whole back cover is the housing for the phone, if it ever gets any deep scratches, all I need to do is swap out the back cover.

I placed an order for the Nexus 4 16GB on the Play Store last week for around 380 including tax and shipping. It will still take two weeks before it ships, and now I am having second thoughts. I like my One S and am not too impressed by the Nexus 4 specs. Any personal thoughts / opinions?

I've heard bad things about the N4's battery life. And I am very sceptical to any phone with a back made of glass. That said, it is really cheap for the specs it has. Snapdragon S4 Pro is pretty sexy.

Cannondale, it is only thanks to you that I stuck with the One S. I only had it for 2 days and thought I had bricked it until I found your post on repairing a soft brick.
My opinion is that a LG phone will never have as good a build quality as a HTC phone, also camera is way below HOS spec. I have heard that the battery life is very poor. The only current phone I would possibly swap for is the Galaxy Note 2!
Change your mind and stay with the better phone for now.
I don't know, I see all this praise over the One S, only from the owners of one, I have the Galaxy Nexus and the HTC One S unrooted stock (for now) and I always prefer to use my GNex. Bigger and better display makes a big difference for the better and the customizations and support. The HTC One S is more powerful but the freedom of the Nexus is a wonderful thing! I haven't rooted my One S yet cause I can't find a Cincinnati Bell Wireless RUU for it, I guess there isn't one. So when I use my One S I miss all the things I can do with my Nexus. I suppose I can do the same things with the HTC it just doesn't seem easy or practical. The Nexus is a developers phone and if you are a flash addict like me thats what makes Nexus users always go back to Nexus. Once you go Nexus you never go back! Lol. I loved my Nexus S and love my Galaxy Nexus even more and I am sure I would love the Nexus 4, just don't have any reason to give up on my GNex yet. So if you are happy with the development for the HTC One S then I would probably stay, I still need to root mine to find out. From what I have seen, especially since there is no RUU for my network it seems to much of a hassle.
Unfortunately the one S is a highly under rated phone, people right it off straight away before even using one for more than a few minutes (even though pretty much every expert review has spoken very highly of it and the only disadvantages they mention of it, is the screen sharpness and limited storage), you don't get to appreciate just how good it really is in 10-20 minutes of usage. IMO the only phones that are truly better overall are the:
- XL and the X+
- GS 3 and note II
- RAZR HD/MAXX
Plus having virtually no advertisements for the phone means average joes etc. will think that it mustn't be that good and therefore won't care, advertise/market the phone as good as the GS 3 and iphones and people will be interested.
The galaxy nexus display is nice, definitely sharper/clearer than the S, however, IMO it is too dull for SAMOLED panel, the one S is the best when it comes to calibration for colour settings, whites are the best I have seen on a SAMOLED screen, view ability in sunshine is far better from my usage with both. The display isn't "much" bigger due to the on screen buttons, iirc the height is pretty much the same but the galaxy nexus is a bit wider, I would have liked the screen on the S to have been a bit wider.
I was going to get the nexus 4 if HTC didn't get the JB update out by the end of this month, however, after reading reviews and loads of users comments, I will probably stay with the S till the butterfly comes out here. Seems more like a side/down grade overall:
- Mixed opinion on the screen, some say it is as good if not better than the X display, but others say the screen is washed out and poor viewing angles, which I can't stand, personally I prefer SAMOLED screens overall
- camera overall isn't as good
- build/perceived quality and design IMO isn't as good (still a lovely looking phone though)
Main advantages of the nexus 4 over the S:
- battery life once they fix the problems with the drivers/software
- nexus device so will get updates
I didn't get the N4 simply because it's too big. I have a one S with AOKP JB ROM and it works like a charm--fast internet, data, no problems with any apps I've tried. I recognize I'm probably in JB 4.1 for the life of the phone but JB finally realizes the promise of Android and I'll probably be happy with it for the next couple of years. And on eBay the one S, rooted and all, was a third cheaper than the N4.

I had the two phones side by side the other day, and after turning both screens on my decision was made. After being spoiled by the true blacks and rich colors of the one s screen, I couldn't stand the nexus 4 screen.
As far as the specs go, yeah, you get more processing power and ram, but do you need it yet? Does screen size outweigh screen quality? And as far as updates go, if you're rooted, you got 'em.

I have a N4 and One S. I haven't had it long enough to give a full review. I've been waiting for the successor to the Galaxy Nexus for a while and was turned of at first to hear it was produced by LG. Now that I have one I don't care who made it. He's some simple observations.
Build quality: Very Good - My phone has no creeks or blemishes it's a perfect example.
Screen: Looks great, I don't have much experience with color accuracy but the colors/brightness/clarity are good.
They did speed binning on the SOC and I also got lucky there and got a "Fast" one. I think it just means the kernel will under-volt it by 50ma vs a "Normal" chip
I flashed CM on both phones as fast as I could so there isn't really any difference in terms user experience.
I don't use any of the new 4.2 features.
While it feels thicker laying the two phones flat on a table side by side they seem the same thickness overall. The One S is slimmer in the middle of course.
HTC One S has USB OTG. The Nexus does not, I'm really bummed about that.
Speed wise they are the same to me.
Turns out the 3g/4g switching that alarmed us when the One S came out is hear to stay. It's just more honest reporting of phones connection. Both my phones drop to H when not pulling down data and switch up to H+ when there is actual through put.
I thought I would like the buttons drawn on the screen but they seem to close. I don't like it now that I have it.
That's it for now. I need a little more time to get a better feel for it.

Don't get me wrong, I really do enjoy my LG G3. I cant help but to want the new HTC One M9. I was debating between the G3 and the M8 earlier during the year, but went with the G3 because of the better camera. The M9 camera should be up to par and the material they use are much better. What did you guys think of the phones released today? Im just curious and wanting to start a new conversation.

The deal breaker for me is the HTC logo strip between the bottom speaker and screen. I know it's trivial, and first world problems, but it's so ugly and unnecessary. One selling point of the g3 was the small bezels and the maximum screen space efficiency. The m8 was a better device IMO... But the g3 was a close second with slightly better specs and a better screen

I agree having the bigger screen and less bezels was a nice addition... At first I didn't think having a bigger screen was not going to make much a difference, but I am a little worried, now, about thinking of going back to a smaller screen... Unless the G4 comes up with something that completely wows me I think I'll get the m9... Everything I look at the pics or videos of the m9 I drool, like eye candy lol...

I had the M8 at launch. But could not get use to the bezel to screen ratio. And the HTC bottom band feels so unnecessary.
I'm liking the look of the S6's internals, and it's good to see Samsung making a return to chart-topping specs (well, except the battery life) after the G3 stole the spotlight last year and Samsung released the utterly mediocre S5. Of course I'm bummed about the non-removable battery and lack of an SD card, but it's about time that they made a more premium-feeling device. My S4 is the first smartphone that I've owned that "broke", with the chrome trim coming off everywhere (ew, white plastic), and enough flex that my power button got jammed in.
The M9 looks absolutely awful, not cosmetically, but specwise. No 1440p, (another) lacklustre camera (though not as bad as the ultrapixel trash they were using before), and they don't have the uprated RAM from the S4. Pretty much the only thing this has over the S6 is battery life, as I'm really skeptical whether the DDR4 and 14nm Exynos in the S6 will be really as efficient as they allege. After getting used to the LG's phenomenal (albeit dim and power-wasteful) screen, there's no way I'm backtracking, especially since one year of development should have improved battery efficiency.
I'm eager to see what LG will churn out in the G4, since it seems like my hopes of an Xperia Z4 phone aren't going to be fulfilled.

We would have to agree to disagree... As it is nice to see Samsung come out with something decent for better competition, I don't think know it's better than the m9... The QHD or full HD won't make a difference in a small 5" screen, but it will make a difference in battery life... The design of the s6 is lack luster from pics, and touch wiz is still 5 steps behind sense...

Oh no, I fully agree with you on the battery life aspect. I'm just not interested in moving back to 1080 after the G3, and I'm likely upgrading to a phablet after this phone.
I think the S6 looks mediocre, but the Edge looks really nice. Based on my previous experience with TW, Sense, and the G3, I've found OEM skins to have become genuinely more palatable, so I'm not too concerned. Sense is a hell of a lot nicer, but regardless of skin, deleting the launcher (for Nova or GNow, depending on your inclination) removes 30-40% of the skin, and almost all of the lag, if any exists in the first place.
I am keen on seeing the RAM, Exynos, and design improvements on the S6 line. I remember my old Wolfson DAC powered SGS, and want to see how far the Exynos has come since then. Especially if the M9's 810 is as prone to heat as the G3's 801 (and the subsequent battery life and performance drops), I'm a tad wary. Though, I can't believe they removed SD card support, which legitimately annoys me.
My biggest issue with the M9 is that it looks exactly like the M8 (save for the Duo Camera eyesore), which looked worse than the M7 right before it; the way I see it, S6<M8<M9<M7<S6E. As someone who trialled and traded an M8 for my G3, that doesn't have me enthused. Also, reviews have allegedly been against the new camera setup, still panning it relative to its flagship competitors (though not as bad as the Ultrapixel Duo trash), especially for its lack of OIS. Its spec sheet also is perfectly mediocre for what it is, with the only real gain over our G3 being the 810 v. the 801.

OK I see your point... The design is not for everyone... I am excited to see what LG has in store... My biggest problem is that I'm impatient... But even though the edge really intrigued me when I first seen it, then I read that the edge only shows time and notification... That was a disappointment to me because now I feel like all its going to do is drain the battery... They could have used that edge to be more practical... Idk I think I'm still going with the m9 bit I'm really trying to wait to see what LG has in store

There is little gained by always chasing the latest and greatest "thing". Sure the new phones are arguably better than the G3, but is it really worth the cost? I really doubt it. Trading for a new phone every 6-12 months makes as much sense financially as trading in for a new car every 1-2 years....... Ride the G3 for at least one more cycle of flagship phone releases and then consider getting something new. Just my 2 cents....... :good:

I was a big HTC fan, absolutely loved my One XL and even the Aria. Tried to like the M8 but could not get over the stupid logo strip. Not only are the aesthetics weird but it gets in the way of using the phone. Touching the logo strip generates the equivalent of soft button actions but the behavior is very inconsistent.
At the time I was told that the logo strip is there because they need the room to cover up some of the hardware that drives the speakers. Which brings me up to another objection - those damn speakers that make the phone much bigger and heavier than it needs to be. As far s I am concerned a phone needs to have just enough of a speaker to produce well audible beeps and buzzes. Anything more is pointless, that's what headphones are for.
Got the G3 because of the near non existent bezels. The power and volume buttons on the back are pure genius for a phone this size. The launcher is fugly but the first thing in do with any phone is put Nova on, so that does not matter. And once you root and get rid of crap there is hardly any lag. Battery life has proved to be decent despite the QHD screen.
Which brings me to my biggest complaint about the G3 - the QHD screen. 1080p would have been perfectly fine and the battery life would have improved. What a waste. Unfortunately I can't see the G4 coming with a lower res screen from a purely marketing point, and now that Samsung has gotten on the bandwagon HTC cannot be far behind. Pitty. Maybe a motto X is in my future.
For $150 how is this phone really? I am looking to buy it for my mother who of course doesn't care about specs.
Her current phone is an HTC desire 610(Snapdragon 400, 1 gb ram, and 8 GB storage with a 2040 mah battery) and it is really showing its age.
She doesn't care about the latest updates and likely doesn't notice lag.
For her, this phone would be used for
-Photos out with friends
- Social networking(FB, Instagram, etc etc)
-texting and of course calling
Do you recommend it for a mom?

was really hoping to find more thoughts about this phone. I just discovered and was seriously considering picking it up since my Note 4 is DEAD (NO MORE SAMSUNG FOR ME EVER!!! My S3 crapped out and I had to force Samsung to give me another even though my warranty had passed).
I just bought one for me last month to replace a Galaxy S4 that went smashy. I'm happy with it. Coming from an S4 the Idol 3 is clearly an inferior device in every category. But it's still a very strong phone, and for $150 you can't really go wrong. When I compared 'darn good phone for $150' to 'massively impressive phone of the gods for $650' I chose the Idol.
The one drawback on the Idol 3 (And Idol 4 / BalckBerry DTEK 50) is the camera for indoor shots. The camera isn't strong in low light. It's okay. It's not awful. But it's not fantastic. For outdoor shots in daylight, it's a fine camera. So if a great camera is a must, the Idol 3 is going to disappoint. If you need a great camera, you might consider the LG4. It's got a STUPIDLY IMPRESSIVE camera and the price on those is dropping fast. It's still more than the Idol 3, but it's almost worth it for the far superior camera.
As for getting Samsung to replace an S3....really? A 4 year old phone conked out on you and you're shocked and ready to give up on Samsung because of it? Seriously? These things are built with a 2 year life expectancy.
I also had Samsung s4, Samsung Note 2, and Nexus 5. I would not say the Idol 3 is inferior in every way, just some. That being said, the lack of bloatware, MM, and a nice screen make up for a lot of its shortcomings.
I've had the phone for more than year and like it a lot. I paid $200 at prerelease. The screen is excellent and not fragile. Get a good case for it and you will be happy. i have a leather folio type case with a cover that closes and protects the screen. the front dual stereo speakers are loud and great for music. Allcatel has been pretty good about O/S updates. The camera isn't great in low light but very good with both photos and video is bright light. You can't really go wrong for the price.

Her current phone is an HTC desire 610(Snapdragon 400, 1 gb ram, and 8 GB storage with a 2040 mah battery) and it is really showing its age.
She doesn't care about the latest updates and likely doesn't notice lag.
For her, this phone would be used for
-Photos out with friends
- Social networking(FB, Instagram, etc etc)
-texting and of course calling
Do you recommend it for a mom?

I would no longer recommend getting an alcatel phone. Period. They have provided 0 support..they in fact have made things even more difficult by taking away features such as fastboot which makes NO sense in a product being sold unlocked with no carrier hooks. The development is minimal and the majority of the devs are working on other devices although they may still provide some idol3 support it won't be a daily thing. Finally the stock rom's for the idol3 have serious deficiencies....you have terrible lag for 5.0.2 and very short screen on time for marshmallow. Additionally occasionally it just flat out has to be rebooted to get things working right or free up memory.
For $150 there are many other options available now...heck I just purchased a refurbished T-mobile LG V10 for $210 and the specs are MUCH better than the idol3. If the $150 price range is important consider the moto g4.
the device is a great buy and no the screen is not fragile(or mine isnt).

Hi all, just discovered the Essential Phone yesterday while getting ready to buy a Sony Xperia XZ2 compact. I like a sleek, small(er) phone and there are very few options that will work on Verizon's CDMA network.
I've been researching all I can on this phone and would likely buy one certified refurbished off Amazon. The price seems amazing!
I've been reading a bit about cellular quality (people losing signal) and other small issues. Of course you always hear about issues online but rarely do people post their pleasant experience with a product.
How popular are these phones? Did they sell well? Do you think there are many out there that have never had any issues or, are these a better 2nd phone next to a more reliable daily driver?
One thing I would like to do is use a new Samsung Galaxy Watch with my new phone. I've read Pie has had some issues playing nice with smart watches (Galaxy watches in particular?)
I also have read the Essential Phone is easily rootable which is fantastic. I've rooted phones in the past (it's been a while) and have no issue doing so again if it would help make this amazing phone more stable, reliable or work better with a smart watch.
SO - Should I (or would you) buy the Essential Phone again or should I skip to the Sony Xperia XZ2 compact? The major driver of my decision is reliability.

I would most certainly buy another Essential. They are smooth, reliable, the custom rom community has grown exponentially recently, and the battery life is decent if you aren't heavy into mobile gaming. As a plus, it also gets updates as soon as (or in a couple cases, faster) than the Pixels. It's a good size and the screen quality is really great for the price. The signal reception issue can be a bit of a hassle, but I've managed to work with it. I won't be getting another phone until this one dies, or I have heaps of cash to get a Samsung Note whatever the new one is when I can buy it.

I'd buy again, definitely. Just not for the original price. Try ordering yours in China, you can buy one for 100-130USD, but what you get is a lottery. i bought 3 pieces and 2 were perfect, one was a bit heavily used with scratches and poor battery.
Overall, phone is still great in 2019. I use it as daily driver since 13 months. XZ2 looks medieval compared to essential.
Cons:
- probably hard to resell
- impossible to replace battery, use it till it dies 1-2 years later and rip the phone
- a bit heavy, but it's thanks to great build materials
Almost everything is good for me. The camera could be better, but gcam helps with that. The biggest issue I have is the touchscreen being janky.
The best of the PH1 support and the construction of the terminal, I never had signal or screen problems, the camera is good (although in low light the pictures have a lot of noise). I always liked it from the moment it came out but as it was not positioned to score for many, the sale price was its most negative point. It became a viable option when its low price to $ 450, in that value had no competition. If a PH2 comes out, it will be my next cell phone, in terms of support, without counting Pixel, it is far the best support and customer service. After having flagships of Samsung and Lg, in Android there are 3 options Pixel, OnePlus and Essential.
I would definitely buy it again, but only if I could find a great deal for it (I won't pay a full price for ANY phone, period). Managed to get my PH1 for under US$150 (that's including a 360 camera and a DIY replacement for a shattered screen), and couldn't be happier with it. Everyone's usage pattern is different, so the opinions may vary, but for me it's by far the best phone I ever owned. Speaking of reliability, this phone has never let me down so far, it just works. Rooting of Android Pie is indeed easy with Magisk. I don't use TWRP, and keep this phone full stock (rooted).
I don't care for smartwatches, so can't comment on using them with the Essential, sorry.
I concur with other posters, would buy again. Came from OnePlus 5, intended this to be a backup phone as the OP USB port is janky. The PH1 is now my daily driver, really like the device. Use the Gcam for a better camera, easy to root. Screen is fantastic IMO too. Battery life gets me thru a day no problem, normal usage. Price is good...snagged one with the 360 cam for 180.
