[Q] Noob(Need Help With Rooting) Please!

I have never rooted my phone before, but would like to do so. I'm running Android version 2.3.6 can someone explain to me what to do or direct me to where I can find out how?

I was just reading that thread and I seen someone posted that a one click method would be up but I couldn't find it?

What answer are you expecting? I know that sounds incredibly criticizing, not my intention, I promise. I got a laugh. I'm just saying think about it.
My advice though is to watch someone do it on youtube. Even if not for your phone it will help give you an idea of the steps needed and about how long it should take (very useful if something goes wrong and you find yourself sitting and waiting and worrying about how long it is supposed to take)
If you can be patient and follow steps, I'm sure you can. Everyone has a first time.

Yeah that's the first thing I did before I decided to post. I always try to do my research before finally asking a question. I read that rooting is different for all phones so I thought why watch a process if it's going to be different from what I will actually be doing it will kind of confuse me even more. Also I search on YT and there were only 2 videos that I found for this phone and both were for version 2.3.5.

You might be surprised how few people research anything before posting. There was a post last week about a guy who bricked his sgsii by flashing a file for a lg Optimus. Then got mad when people said that was stupid.
You're already ahead of the curve with what research you've done.
The nice thing about odin is it's samsung specific software. There may be different details for different phones, but how you connect the phone, the file type you choose, and buttons you do and don't select will be the same. If ever in doubt ask a question. Silver03wrx is easily one of the biggest helps here, much less the rest of the community.
Just know that for now, there's no way to root without tripping your flash counter.

So there is no way to root without modifying recovery? I would like to preserve my ability to update ota or potentially reverse the process.

You can follow those insruction with odin. The after you flash the superuser zip you can flash stock recovery tar found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360943.
And fyi anytime you odin the stock firmware .tar it takes u back to complete stock . Beware though in order to be able to take ota updates u can not delete bloatware. Just freeze it. You need stock recovery and bloatware intact/frozen to be able to ota update

so with a fubar'ed flash counter, i can still receive ota updates? also, will this custom recovery alter my efs folder at all?

All u need to do is have stock recovery and all bloatware to recieve an ota.

[Q] [Urgent] May have softbricked my phone, need help

Ok so I'm very new to the whole root business, and I only rooted my phone so I could use my ps3 controller via bluetooth which would then allow me to charge my phone at the same time. Got all that working and I was pretty much done with anything root related. That was two days ago. About an hour ago I decided, hey, why not see what I can do with my phone now that it's rooted. So I download the ROM manager and titanium backup. I found a ROM that I think I've heard people talk about before called Cyanogen Mod and I download the stable version of that and I went into ROM manager and I installed it there, it went through the reboot into recovery and everything. At least I thought it worked. It rebooted and I really didn't see anything different. So I manually went into recovery mode and installed Cyanogen from my sd card and rebooted my phone. However, it didn't reboot. It took me to a screen with a yellow triangle that says Verizon found software it doesn't authorize and I should take my phone to the nearest verizon store. It displays this everytime I try to boot my phone. All I can do is boot into ODIN mode. Please someone help, I'm at a loss as to what I should do.

All I can tell you is that you did not unlock your bootloader. You can fix this, but you're going to
have to do the work. Read about Odin.

Well, I read around and It told me to flash the Jellybean 4.1.2 thing to re-root my device and unlock the bootloader in the process. The heading was, If I rooted my device and forgot to unlock and now am getting a yellow triangle, so that seemed like what I needed. I flashed with odin, it said it passed and it auto rebooted my phone, but it still came up with the triangle.

I never said anything about flashing files with Odin.
I just said to read about it.
That's all I'm going to say...read.

AS RipRip said...read. Do your homework no matter how long it takes to gain knowledge. I took a month to learn what to do with everything. I'm still learning. If you feel uncomfortable with anything don't mess with your phone.

My intention is to offer hints without just handing the solution to you

I can tell you are new as you rooted your phone twice and STILL didn't unlock the bootloader. It makes sense to ask us how to unlock the bootloader since that is the problem in the first place. Also it is a stupid idea to take a rooted phone to Verizon as you just voided your warranty by rooting your device which is why you read before altering the software of an expensive device.

Yes, it is pretty obvious that I am new. If all I have to do is unlock my bootloader, then is there somewhere you can point me so I can work on that? I'm just having some trouble figuring out how to unlock it with only being able to boot into ODIN mode.

which root method did you use? As all pretty much give you instructions to unlocking the bootloader. If you use the Odin method then you didn't follow the method to the T as you are SUPPOSE flash a file provided that unlocks the bootloader. In one of your posts you said the following "Well, I read around and It told me to flash the Jellybean 4.1.2 thing to re-root my device and unlock the bootloader in the process" That is basically one of the root methods so no I won't point you the right direction as you already found it. Oh and please follow directions carefully.

Look I can tell you are pretty frustrated. So i am going to be a little bit nicer than the guys above. First make sure your phone is fully charged. This is very important. The first link is Odin. load that on your computer. Make due you have Samsung drivers. The 2nd link is to unlock your bootloader. It gets flashed via odin. Make sure you load the file via the PDA button in Odin. After the flash your phone will reboot automatically. This should get u up and running. If it doesn't you will need to follow the instructions for the last 2 links I posted below. This last 2 links flashes stock and shows you how to root and unlock your bootloader. I know the guys above want to u to learn how to do this stuff on your own but many people seem to forget that some people that come in here are not as tech saavy as they are. But be warned. You MUST read ALL instructions to the letter BEFORE starting the process. This is to educate yourself. Remember u need Odin and the Samsung USB drivers installed

Well I finally managed to fix it. It was after I read the post above, but it works now. I want to thank everyone who posted in here offering advice.
It may not have been the most sophisticated way to do it, but I basically flashed a stock image of jelly bean 4.1.2 onto my phone, and then factory reset it. It's fine by me that I lost my data, (the only annoying thing is all the game saves) and I'm just glad I'm not going to have to go through the awkward process of explaining how I voided my warranty to my parentals.

What is the best current way to root & unlock VZW S3?

Guys, I have spent hours rooting and unlocking my S3. Reason it has taken so long is either I don't know what I'm doing or there are so many ways to do it, some may be outdated or something. I'll side with the first reason. But, I do have experience in rooting...kept my OG Droid rooted/overclocked/customized. Did the same with my Thunderbolt. Also rooted my S3 a few months ago after the VZW update that crapped out the radio. When they released the fix, I removed root and installed it. Got the urge for some new stuff and here I am...
Here is what I'm doing:
- Using CausalR795b. Seems quick and easy. Definitely provides root, but I'm not sure about unlocking the bootloader. What is the insecure aboot? Says it's ready to install it, but I can't find out what this is?
- Trying to install TWRP recovery. What is the easiest way to do this? The last time I did it with Goomanager, I got the Verizon Unauthorized Software message at boot.
- Trying to install the latest Hyperdrive ROM. Got it installed once and on reboot, got the VZW Unauthorized message again,
- Using ODIN 3.07 to flash a stock ROM after getting the error message.
Can anyone tell me a link with good directions, start to finish? Or, give me some advice? To me, at least, seems like VZW has made customizing the S3 unnecessarily complicated,

Insecure aboot is the unlocked bootloader. Once you install that you will no longer get the VZW Unauthorized message.

My bad...I did post in the wrong place. Wasn't even thinking about it. Had just spent so long in this subforum trying to find answers, must have lost my bearing.
I really appreciate your help! The older Causal did everything in one try with no hiccups whatsoever. Why isn't anything posted about this noted in the newer Causal thread? It might be in there somewhere and if I would have seen it, hours would have been saved.
Now rocking the newest Hyperdrive and probably going to try a few more ROM's. Thanks again!

[Q] How to get XT926 back to stock

Man, I can't go off the grid for three days without coming back & finding the good news that KK can be rooted and phone can be unlocked.
So here's my problem: I am rooted and locked on JB. I've been using Safestrap for about a year to run alternate ROMS. I really don't know when it happened, but sometime earlier this year I went to boot into the stock rom slot and it just hangs and hangs. Obviously, I didn't care since I was happy with alternate roms.
But now with the ability to root & unlock my bootloader, I'm dying to get back to stock & get KK.
But I can't do the steps on here from other threads for getting back to stock so I can take the KK update.
Any ideas?

Why take the KK update? Flash the full FXZ.

This will allow you to root and unlock your phone. Just follow Sam's directions. Read, read again and then, read one more time before attempting to actually do the steps.

Thanks. My problem is it requires USB 2.0 & I don't have, nor do I have access to a computer with USB 2.0. That's what I get for upgrading my laptop a few months back . Any other options that you're aware of?

Not that I know of. You'll need to find a computer with USB 2.0. Some have stated USB 3.0 worked for them, but I'm all a little skeptical on that claim, but I have no way to prove nor disprove it, so I guess I have to take their word at face value.

Maybe a different tack - will Matt Groff's utility do what I need? I haven't seen anything about it needing USB 2.0

No. They all have to have usb 2.0. That's the issue: your pc hardware as opposed to the software.
Matt's utility still uses fastboot to flash the images.

SamuriHL's tools have recently been updated for all this KitKat stuff, so I would go with his stuff. He's been staying on top of this since Kit Kat was released for the HD and he's here and at the DroidRzr.com forums as well and is always willing to help as long as you've read through everything three times before attempting to do it and then, if you run into problems, ask. His tools are real easy to use, but you must read at least three times through his directions before you even begin to attempt to try it. There is a lot of setup involved, but it's not difficult. Just read carefully and take your time. Most people rush through it, missing important bits of info and then end up finding it didn't work for them. But, it was always something pointed out in the directions that they missed and if they would have read three times and took their time, they would have caught it.
Matt's tools are great as well, but I don't know how up-to-date they are.

Thanks again for the reply . Well I had a limited chance to zoom over to a neighbors with my passport & phone in hand. I had both utilities with me, had Matt's up & running first and after not too much time, I am up & running rooted & UNLOCKED with TWRP installed. I am oh so glad this opportunity came back. Now I get to spend the afternoon unbloating KITKAT & finding the thread to get the MHS up & running. Thanks again for your help & guidance.

They are updated regularly, so yes, the utility is up to date.

running nougat va20. tried every root/custom recovery method i could find.

so like the title states, i'm trying to flash twrp and get root. i've tried idk how many different methods and i'm hitting a brick wall. bootloader is unlocked, recowvery is giving me an error before closing itself, not doing anything. verified device is recognized by adb.
also tried flashing recovery using flashboot, but obviously that doesn't work on a20. i'm open to suggestions as i would really like to have a custom recovery
i could flash a rooted .kdz/.tot but i have yet to find one that is a20 or higher.

Sorry, to hear that it didn't work for you. In my experience, this has to be related to not following the instructions to the point. I was also stuck myself initially, only to find out later that I missed something in the instruction. Give us more detail, otherwise no one can help you. Which firmware version are you on? Which method are you trying? Is it an automated script or manual. IMO, the manual method works best, and easier to troubleshoot.

If this worked, good for you.
But I don't think it should work. Last time I checked, the very fastboot flash command is disabled in LG G5. Recowvery is supposed to be the only way.
BTW, I don't trust root and unlock methods outside of xda. There are lots of clickbait articles, which has the potential to brick your device.

Other root methods and apps that root and all that stuff are just BEGGING for your phone to be destroyed. I used a KingRoot solution once on an old phone that no XDA certified method still worked on....it rooted it just fine. But all the added junk it installed as system files with highly restrictive permissions that made them impossible to remove essentially made the device unusable. This was an old phone I was just using for an experiment anyway so no loss. But it illustrates why any root methods not found on XDA are highly risky.
I mean, sometimes a questionable root method gets posted on XDA too. But it's usually debunked as a bad idea within a day or two. (Sometimes within an hour) So you can read about real world experience with that method on a specific device and know if you should avoid it or not.
And there are other Android developer sites like XDA that can give good root options and solutions, as well as good advice for a phone in general. I'm not suggesting that anything outside of XDA is crap. If you find a good root solution on another website that has a reputable history and you trust it, great.! But never google "Root my phone" and try the first option that pops up on some sketchy Chinese / Russian / Martian website.

Were you on updated nougat version and rolled back to v20a using lgup?
