[Q] Backing up my phone - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the best way to back up my entire phone? A system image that I can restore later would be ideal. I want to back it up and transfer the backup file(s) to my computer for safekeeping. Does a nandroid backup from TWRP take a FULL backup of the device (including /sdcard) that I can later transfer to my computer?
I'd prefer that the solution be free, but I'm willing to pay if necessary. Thank you!

Nandroid does everything except sdcard. You'll need a separate solution for that. Have a look at my thread

That's an incredibly informative thread, thank you! So I'll do a nandroid backup, transfer that to my computer, then I can just manually mount /sdcard and copy/zip it all up to back that up. I think that should do it. Thank you!

I don't usually wipe everything but if I did, I would use Wifi File Transfer pro by which you can zip everything in the /sdcard with a few clicks and when you need to restore just unzip it via any file manager...
For everything else, do a nandroid backup!

I just foldersync my sdcard to my NAS while I sleep. I've got 100's of GB's of sdcard data there...

I use CIFS/SMB to my NAS, but it all depends on your situation. Foldersync provides plenty of cloud options as well.

I too use SMB. Use SMB for any share you access via Windows

Internal memory full on S3

Hello, I know this question has been asked before but it has been for other phone models and some years ago so the advice given may no longer be the best. Pretty much I have flashed many roms in the past, but I always erase the downloads when I am going to no longer use it. My vzw s3 has 12.05GB of total space available. I have only 1.3GB left to use. I don't know what is causing the space to be used up because my apps only take up 1.2gb, pics 1.2gb, downloads only 1gm and the rest only takes up about another 2 gigs. I only have one backup as well. So I should have atleast 4-5 GB of space free. Is there anyway I can just wipe all the files that are taking up space? Or any suggestions? I don't mind wiping everything off my phone as long as it doesn't ruin my root and brick my phone. Thanks in advanced

Since you don't mind wiping everything format /sdcard in recovery. Just make sure to have a rom on the external sdcard if you plan on just starting everything over.

Oh, what exactly does format SD card do?

It deletes everything from /sdcard which is your internal storage. I'm unsure if it wipes the rom as I never use it so I suggest you put one on the external sdcard just in case. You could even pull your external sdcard format sdcard and boot up. If it removes the rom, pop the external sdcard back on and flash that.

Hey so it worked just great. The ROM is untouched although I did an external backup. I got all my 11gb back. The only thing I wasn't expecting was my pictures being deleted. I thought those would be saved

Glad you got the storage space back. Not fun hearing about the photos being gone but formatting /sdcard wipes everything on internal (without discrimination) like I posted.

Yeah, tomorrow I'm going to try reverting back to the backup to see if my pics are back then save them elsewhere and rewipe again.

Don't think it will. But one can certainly hope.

Pictures won't be in that backup. But you should be using Google's backup options to prevent this sort of thing. Google will backup ask your photos, videos, contacts, apps, etc if you let it. Also set your camera app to save to external sd.
I have the same issue as you with regards to space, I wonder if there's a space sniffer type app for phones that will show you where all your space is being eaten up.

If you've switched between 4.1.2 and 4.2+ ROMs you may have caused some accidental shuffling in how /sdcard is organized.
In Android 4.2 they changed the internal structure to where /sdcard data is actually located. If you use a file browser you may have noticed a mysterious folder at /sdcard/0 which is where 4.2+ stores everything.
It's important to know this so that /sdcard data can be moved back and forth depending on the Android version of the ROM you're using.
I would use es file explorer. It is awesome for browsing the folders on your phone as well as moving files to and from your internal storage. I also always use my external SD for pictures, music and videos I always go into es file explorer before I wipe internal storage to make sure I won't lose something important. Or you can use Google to back up. Google plus will backup photos as well as Drive. Although I've found the auto backup on Google plus to be easier and more convenient.

Are you having trouble just copying the entire respective custom recovery folder onto your computer? I do monthly TWRP backups and just copy the entire folder onto my computer and delete older ones as I do so. Just did that last night actually.

Yea, I've been doing this for a solid 2.5 years going back to my last device. With TWRP, all I transfer over is the actual backup file since the file path does not change. With CWM, I used to copy over the entire CWM folder as it contained the blogs and backups in different folders. Best of luck my friend!

Trying to remove crapware after root

I rooted with weaksauce and then tried to remove the Verizon bloatware with "no bloat" and a couple of other apps like it. They say the apps uninstalled but then they just get downloaded again.
What did you do to remove or freeze the crapware after root?

How did you get Titanium to write to the card? I keep getting "folder is not writable" when I try to select a backup folder.
Beamed from the holodeck of my Nexus 7 FHD.

Titanium Backup is the first app I downloaded after I rooted and I have had zero problems with it so I'm not sure what the issue is? I am just using the default storage location, have u tried to switch the location or has it just given you problems from the first install?
my backup directory is: /storage/emulated/legacy/TitaniumBackup
That's what he is saying. .. TB works fine if you use default location (internal storage), but won't write to external sd card as the folder location.

My bad! Not sure then... I know that with our root method that we can only write to certain directories but I don't have a need to change mine as of now so I have not tried but I will report back.
I just froze/disabled everything for now. It does the job.
Are we not able to write to system yet?

Thanks, that worked perfectly. With 32g internally, that's plenty of room to use for Titanium (and spare the space on the external sdcard).

Is this app safe to save EFS ?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ma.wanam.efs
Is this app ok or do I need to do something different to save the efs ?
I have the 920F .
It's recommended. Just make sure you copy the backup somewhere safe - I keep mine on a USB OTG stick, *and* 2 different cloud storage providers.

Hello everyone
So yes, that is my question, I guess it is HARD, but I was wondering, is it possible to restore files (at least photos) after I delete them and format my android phone !?
Thank you a lot

Once you format it will be very hard to recover data.
The only thing you might try is connect your phone via USB. See if it can be read as storage then run the program called Recuva.
Good luck.

If you delete them and where they were stored hasn't been overwritten yet then you should be able to recover them but not if you format, formatting wipes them completely and they can't be recovered.
If you're asking if you can save the pics somewhere else then format your phone and then put the pics back on your phone then yes, you can do that.

Or if you had google photos on your phone, they are automatically backed up there as long as your sync was on. Good luck!
