Nokia 1020 O2..Unbrand or not - Nokia Lumia 1020

I've always Jailbroken iPhones or put stock Android ROMs on phones with bloatware and advertorial crap.
I've bitten a bullet and bought the 64gb 1020 for the camera. As a photographer I've been pleasantly surprised - an improvement on the iPhone 5.
I'm not keen on Windows on a phone but I'm sure I'll get used to it. After all I use W8 & W7 elsewhere and am not a linux bigot just yet.
I deleted the O2 folders in the 1020 but there may be more to the debranding than this. I read that MS mandate an 'open phone' so that all branding can be removed.
Why should i debrand the 1020 further ? Will i end up in update hell ?
What are the advantages & disadvantages of new stock Nokia firmware
Advices please readers.
Thanks

If you debrand (this is that which I advice):
- The updates logically most quickly (the "most fast" circuit = directly OEM and not operator).
- No operator splashscreen.
- No parameters owner operator.
- Access to the VVM (if available according to different condition).
- Options/features no restricted.
- And certainly something else.

Thank you. I cannot find any O2 branding visible since I deleted the two Windows O2 Folders...Priority Moments and O2.
So no O2 splashscreen either.
I was more concerned about what I could not see, from O2, that might affect its use.

I installed an Australian unbranded ROM on my 64GB 1020 which started life locked to UK O2 and so far no problems.

ROM comparison

Hello people,
I have just purchased the T-Mobile MDA Compact (Magician) on German and I have been visiting these forums for some time now to see if I can get english language. I have noticed that there are many different english ROMs out there depending on who is selling the device (I-Mate, Q-Tek, T-Mobile).
What are the main differences between these ROMs? Mainly I am interested in the following:
1. Is the phone functionality the same for all ROMs? (same quality of voice, ring-tone selection, dialing and SMS interface)
2. If they are different, what ROM would you recommend?
3. Would placing the new ROM lock the phone to a network (I have unlocked version)? (T-Mobile ROM to T-Mobile network)
4. Are other pocketpc features the same for all ROMs (Bluetooth functionality, battery usage, memory usage)?
Thank you.
High i recently got my magician, it was already unlocked (it is branded t-mobile mda) i used t-mobile latest rom and phone was still unlocked (i am with o2 ukl). using this forum i upgraded to the 1.13rom,1.13radio rom and bigstorage. there is a guide on how to do this on this forum. the guide has all the links you need to get the roms and all the software you need to do the upgrade. since i have done the upgrade i have had absolutly no problems and have encountered no problems with the added software i use. battery performance etc is no different to before as i have always found it to be good. hope this is of some help to you
here is a link for you on this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32274&highlight=1+13+rom+storage
Hi, thanks for the reply but the link you've posted is for how to install the ROM. I have no problems with that, I am just wandering about the differences between various 1.13 ROMs out there.
Thanks.

The main differences between differently branded ROMs is the Extended ROM, ie the additional software bundled with the ROM. However by large the software included with each ROM is essentially the same, just branded with different things.
1: Yes
2: Well... they're all really the same! I use the T-Mobile ROM since its the 1.13 I'm most accustomed to BigStoraging (I have a guide on that ).
3: No. No ROMs on this site lock your phone to a specific provider, even the branded ones. Heck, I don't think there are ROMs which implement locks on the phone, but stick with the ones here on the FTP in case!
4. Yes, all the core Windows Mobile functions are exactly the same.

Well if you havenĀ“t buyed I recommend no to...
If you already buyed expect bad quality and short duration in general.
EDIT: Erased comment after reading Mod after post
It is very hard to flash the device with other ROMs.
They are known to have DIFFERENT hardware (so the drivers aren't compatible). Even the clones are different from each other..
They have different bootloaders, so our methods of hardSPL etc won't help.
Next to that, there is the quality issue, it is not even close to the quality of an HTC device.
So to sum it up:
-bad quality, no support, no availability of cooked ROMs, no warranty..
I would say, stay clear from it!
Regards,
EqX
Thanks guys, you helped me so much, thanks to you I haven't bought it)). The prices difference between original htc and clone is 100$, so i'd better buy an original one

[Q] Blocking specific phonenumbers

Hi,
With Windows Phone 7 (Nokia Lumia)
Is it possible to block specific phonenumbers? (Not a range of numbers, no just 1 specific number)
And one thats probably been asked a million times, use it as a modem for my laptop?
Using a HTC incredible S at the moment, where it is possible, and they are features I would not like to lose if I were to switch to a WP7 device.
Then again, with the price of the Lumia's It may be better to wait for a WP8 device that supports SmartGlass later this year?
Ask your carrier for blocking phone numbers. They can do it usually for you.
Yes, you can share your internet via WLAN.
Well, I'm still convinced that at least the 2nd gen devices will get WP8 (but that's only my opinion) so can't give you real advice here.

Does that mean the phone/OS itself doesnt have that option?
(cuz provider blocking is not a solution in my case )
Thanks for the answers
As far as I know, WP7 can't do it.
It might be possible on custom roms meaning it's impossible on lumias, at least for now.
Currently, the only Windows phones that support call blocking on the phone are the gen2 Samsung phones, and it's a special feature that Samsung added. Some of us (phone hackers) have been trying to add it to other phones too, though.
Many if not all of the Lumias are for some reason shipping with a partially-limited WiFi driver that doesn't support the "act as a hotspot" mode. The OS (Microsoft's code) supports this, but if the OEMs don't include working drivers (Nokia's code, in this case) then you can't use it. USB tethering might be possible (it is on almost any other WP7 device) but I don't know.
If you have a Lumia 710, or some o the Lumia 800s, they have a USB Mass Storage mode in their bootloaders and you can flash a custom ROM easily. The 900 has not, last I checked, been unlocked in this way (probably not the 610 either).

Sure about that? You need that Qualcomm dev bootloader right?
Got pointed to a guide for downgrading to get the qualcomm dev bootloader in case anyone is interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626317
This is for the 710. I don't now if it's possible on the other lumias.

At&t HTC hd7s wp7.8 wp8 updates?

Hello to all!
I own an HTC hd7s from at&t running wp7.5. The only tweak I've done to this phone is the sd card upgrade to 32gb. Everything else is factory stock.
My question is does anyone knows if at&t will be releasing the 7.8 update for this device? I would like to keep it legit....
But if no plans are out there for updates for this device I'll be more than willing to hack away this phone.
So in my willingness to hack the hd7s, are there any roms being cooked for this device to upgrade to 7.8 or wp8?

No one knows the plans of ATT man. I myself don't think there will be anything for us officially (HTC Titan here). But seeing that the 7.8 update was pulled from MS and Nokia's servers (due some issues with 7.8), you might be waiting for an additional amount of time. But like I said, I don't think the update will be officially released for the other phones on ATT. Like always, the other OEMS (Samsung/HTC) haven't pushed the US carriers into giving its users updates.
Some questions from greece!

You can purchase a 32gb micro Sd card for about $20.00 us dollars. The process is very simple. You can find videos on YouTube that show you how to do this. Make sure you back up your data
For the rest of your questions.... I don't know...

Why you people want to screw your mind with this topic?
Just install Deepshining V8.0 or Dynamics V2.0, they work on the HD7 and the HD7S with no problems...
and get done with this "update issue", when the chefs create a new ROM based on the new update, then it's moment to update the ROM...
Pretty easy...
Thanks faustolg, now question those roms will update to what version of WP?
Sent from my T9295 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
8858 I believe
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express
Both are the same ROM version
7.10.8858.136
there are minor ("proprietary") differences, is up to you what ROM you'll keep.
Both are compatible with WP Backup, Windows Phone Device Manager + TouchXperience, but Dynamics is the only one that is Cab Sender compatible...
A few dates ago I found a nice piece of software called "seveneighter" it automates the WP 7.8 update. And viola! 45 minutes later my HTC hd7s is now WP 7.8!

[Completed] Windows 10 Mobile on unsupported Windows Phone 8.1

I have read the March 2016 article here. Is the procedure still valid, or simplified, since the several releases / updates of Windows 10 Mobile?
I have a Nokia Lumia 920 that has WP8.1 Denim, all updates done. Finally managed to get the Upgrade Advisor to download, and it tells me that this phone isn't suitable - and gives a very abbreviated list of Microsoft Lumia phones that qualify.
My own Microsoft Lumia 640XL Dual SIM upgraded easily, despite 8Gb phone space.
Hi !
If Microsoft decided not to support certain phones then there`s nothing you can do about , they may have some reasons behind
You can start a discussion here https://forum.xda-developers.com/lumia-920/general but I`m affraid that this won`t change anything but at least you might get more oppinions
Cheers !
