Has anyone else had horrid problems with PDANet just vanishing on your computer while you're running uTorrent? Process jsut vanishes, gotta go restart it and reconnect and everything. ROM don't matter, every custom ROM I've had does this crap.
Can someone confirm whether uTorrent works on Wireless Tether or not?

uTorrent and BitTorrent work over my Wifi tether.
Last night I Downloaded how to train....never mind
wireless tether works great with utorrent. Haven't had the best of luck with downloading anything, either ftp or torrent, with PDAnet or easytether
Thanks for the input guys.
I have been using pdanet tether with utorrent for a long time and I think I have figured it out. It works 95% of the time with no problems, however, the torrents with alot of seeders with a good download rate that are coming in "too fast" seem to disconnect it. I'm not sure if it's even the speed, but it seems like it's the number of connections. If you go into the speed guide just lower the setting a bit and it seems to work well. I have mine set on the 17 kbps upload speed and I manually changed it to only allow one upload and download at a time. There are still some torrents which seem to kick it out, but it doesn't happen much anymore. I have also noticed when I go onto google news or another news site and I open like 10 new tabs, for all the articles I want to read, that also will make the pdanet program close or kick me off, so I think it's connections rather than speed. The highest consistent speed I have had downloading from utorrent has been ~170-180 kb/s.

My highest consistent I think was yesterday, a record, of about 160kB/s
Mmmmm... uTorrent will be awesome when the Evo is out
My problem is that the phone gets so hot that it hits the thermal safety limit and shuts off after about 15 mins when doing torrents, this does not happen when playing wow or general browsing.
I can definitely say that it is the speed, and not the number of connections. I am tethered via usb and use utorrent all the time. I also download from sites like uploaded, rapidgator, etc. As soon as my speed gets fast Pdanet stops on my phone. I can not even do one download using zippyshare because they have very fast speeds.
Best tethering option for a rooted samsumg captivate?

Download non-US version of Samsung driver and then connect your phone via USB to PC. Select PC Internet for the USB setting on your phone and you're tethered. US verison of Samsung driver does not work.
android Wi-fi Tether is what I use.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
The US captivate version does not have a wired tehering capability. (no modem). I use wireless-tethering available off of a google code project... The latest expirimental works great for me! Pm me and I will send links and post here when I am home.

Wrong. See my post above. It is just a driver trick.

i was using PDAnet and recent (finally) installed Samsung's Kies on my laptop so i could check for firmware updates,
Kies has tethering as an option, and oddly, my laptop seems to browse at faster speeds than with PDAnet

Wi-fi is easiest option, otherwise you can download for 32bit this driver for USB tether: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...SB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html
64 bit driver also found on softpedia.

Linux user confused.
I run linux on my laptops, HP i7 and Acer Ferrari. Had plugged in Samsung Captivate via USB for file transfer, networking detected phone and connected (first time I wasn't aware networking had used usb0 (phone) instead of my WiFi connection; eating up my 3G data). Tried later on my Acer Ferrari at work; connects within a few seconds of being plugged in. I don't have PDAnet or any other special USB program installed.

I used the wonder and did eventually get to working tether but it doesn't give me option to install nonmarket apps directly from the phone; I have to dl them to the PC and install.
I tried to set it up with several different ways but no others seemed to work.
What suggestions do u have for most simple unblocking so installs can happen right at phone?
Thanx for the help! It was fun to get this far!

It's a known issue. Most ppl experience of battery pulling.
Besides the fact that it is very difficult to setup security (WEP???) and effectively block others, mostly brain dead iphones, to automatically connect to your phone, it is not really not worth the trouble. I fired up this Android Tethering on a busy Airport and immediately got more than dozen iPhone connected to it. The build-in access control can control who has the access to the internet but incapable of kick the ofenders off your phone. Battery was dead in less than 30 minutes.
There is now a new solution that enables native wireless AP (WPA2 capable) in addition to the USB tethering (still my favorite) in Captivate Android Development forum. Unfortunately you have to flash to a custom kernel in order to restore the wireless AP capability that was stripped off by request of AT&T.
so no other option for wifi tethering besides the custom kernel huh?
I really want to tether my iPad to it to show off to my friends at work

I'm using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre7.apk and have NEVER had an issue with my phone locking up. I wonder if people are forgetting to turn off WiFi and bluetooth on their phones, which may interfere with the tethering process.
As to encryption, setting it up was very simple and I've never had anyone else leeching off of my wireless.
so I uninstalled my version, which I tried pre5, and pre8, none worked. Uninstalled, rebooted phone, installed pre7, didn't work, uninstalled ATM rebooted phone, then turned it back on and it works.. Weird...

the custom kernel isn't as bad as it sounds (all it does is to uncommented a few lines in the init.rc). But it does require Odin to flash it which is a hassle or error prone.

Nope. I used pre8 and don't have wifi or BT on. It crashed once. And refuse to work many times. And I have reboot the phone inorder to completely shut off the tethering (the adhoc network is still visible even if you turn off the tethering).
Hey guys,
I've been following XDA-developers for a long time, and would like to return something for all the help the community has provided. I traded my iPhone 4 for a G2X today only to find out that my BB data plan is incompatible -_-. Unwilling to wait until Memorial Day was over (611 closed), I decided to turn on Wi-Fi and tinker with it.
Unfortunately I fell victim to the phone's Wi-Fi's problems. It worked for seconds at startup, then simply stopped. Frustrated, I decided to take manners in my own hands. The evil culprit is T-Mobile's My Account program. Here is how to fix it (root and a $3.99 Market purchase required, no piracy!!)
First follow the directions in this tutorial to root your phone. Its pretty simple. ADVANCED: unrooting method.
Make sure Wi-Fi calling is turned on, as well as 3G/4G (from Mobile networks settings page)
Do a battery pull AFTER you enable the above ^. Wait 1 minute before rebooting your phone.
Wi-Fi should work on its own (although buggy) with these two enabled. If you have 3G/4G, you do not need to do this: for Wi-Fi only users, continue to reboot until you have somewhat of a stable Wi-Fi connection. It's very intermittent but eventually it will work for enough time to download Root Explorer from the market!
Go to the Market and install Root Explorer (purchase required, there may be free ways but I do not know of them and I do not advocate piracy)
Open this app. A popup from Superuser will ask you for permission. Grant it with "Allow"
From Root Explorer, navigate to /system/apps
At the top of the list box click the "Mount R/W" button
Scroll down and look for the following: MyAccount.apk and com.nuance.nmc.sihome (the latter may be named differently but it has a My Account icon)
A box will come up telling you that com.nuance.nmc.sihome has encountered an error. This box will refuse to go away. Simply do a battery pull.
YOUR WI-FI WOES SHOULD BE GONE, and your phone's stability should have improved. Enjoy!
You can download the latest version of My Account from Market now and cease to have problems.
Other safe-to-remove T-Mobile stuff:
EA Games (EAPK)
Zinio (does anyone use this?)
Telenav
Nova

You don't need to do any of this noob stuff if your wifi doesn't connect to your home router or any router for that matter. It's unneccesary and time consuming, not to mention risky since you could "brick" your phone. All you have to do is reboot the phone, simplest way is hold power button and volume up simultaneously, then it should connect, assuming you entered the correct password if router has secure connection.
I just turn wifi off then back on. Works for me.
And stop with the noob stuff the guy just wrote he came from an iPhone to a g2x.
He will figure it out as he goes.

I see two band-aid solutions, a reboot, and a restart...gosh that is advanced.
Verse a solution to fully resolve the problem, and keep it gone. More importantly a possible isolation of the cause.
These super duper pro android interlopers are unapproachable on their savvy solutions. Ummm no
Since the OP says its linked to My account program, and I know on first run it says a newer copy is available, I am going to wonder that many users don't touch it.
So since I am already freshly on a complete reset of everything (erase all date, or hold down volume and power) I am going to try.
1. Full erase reset
2. First thing upadate new version of My Account.
3 Hard restart.
4. See how it reacts
My wifi is decent except sometimes it does clog up and I have to clear buffers and shut down programs to get it to kick up. Start and stop wifi solves nothing on mine.
Anyways its about 10 minutes of time to do, since my phone already is in near out of the box setup.
Sorry but I'm not here to post "noob" stuff. Of course restarting the phone or its wifi radio were part of my first efforts. But the phone's stock software has a bug in which the default My Account program a) causes a DNS issue and b) displays itself twice in Manage Applications. Things work great if you have a working data connection from tmo but if not you will notice that wifi refuses to work on its own. I'm not dumb and by no means am I a noob. I've been following XDA since the days of the Wizard. By the way rooting and deleting useless carrier garbage like the buggy and persistent MyAccount.apk will not brick your phone unless you are careless.
"My Account" from tmo has been nothing but a pain in the ass for me. I froze it using Antek App Manager (a free app). I used the same software to freeze the other garbage that came installed by tmo, and battery and booting issues have greatly improved. Just my 2 cents.
Other stuff I froze include: Car Home, ea games, Zinio reader, AppPack, T-Mobile TV, and wifi calling.
Of course some are big fans of wifi calling but I don't need or use it.

Okay sorry, it causes the HSPA / Wi-Fi switching issue. Could you be any more polite about correcting me? FYI I haven't found any SOLID proof of this. Immediately after removing MyAccount and all of its derivatives from the phone DNS requests worked flawlessly; It's been 9 hours of constant wi-fi only use without issues (NO radio turned on). Prior to removing the app, only IP addresses would be resolved by the browser.

Seems some people here would rather everyone be so afraid to post bad information that there is none at all. But we know better right?

No..Those people you're referring to would rather have people search before posting. This so called "fix" has been posted many times. No need to start a new thread.
I tried this and got no error lol. What I did was reinstalling MyAccount with the MyAccount.apk in system\app and now my wifi actually works with the Market.
Hey All
since upgrading to CROM-i v5 i have been having some issues with connecting to me work WiFi, i never had any issues before v5 but this seems like the only place that has issues. We use Cisco access points that run through out network and we are currently using 802.1xEAP authentication. All devices need to authenticate via MAC's which i have passed onto so they can add it in but when i enter in my details it just stays at "Connecting..." and just hangs there and never ever connects.
i use the tablet at home and it connects with no issues.
Anyone have any ideas???

I keep trying to log into the network at home and on job sites but the wireless utility never seems to accept my passwords. I can't get a signal reading, which is bollocks as I see high signal strength from the access point in the wireless AP list. I will install logcat and capture some logs later.
I dont recall the wireless being this heniky before the newest ROM. :crying: Oh and sorry bought the bags, I see after more careful reading its "dags"!
seems to me that im not the only with this new wifi connection problemj hmmm i still havent been able to connect on my home wifi even with a reformat, factory reset and fresh install of the newest cromi 5.0.4

This may be mute, going to try flashing 5.04 and see if that makes a difference. But per your request Im attaching both startup and sleep recover logs. Hope it helps. I have no network connectivity at this point!
Edit0: I did the update and at first network didn't connect. So I "forgot" and then reselected my network and now I am connected and am getting email, updates from apps, and other goodies. Will try sleep and recovery to see if that works too. Just hope it works going forward so I can watch some movies and family guy episodes when trying to go to sleep. I'm happier for now at least. If this fails I will go back to 5.02.......

Just confirmed with our network guys here we dont have a specific channel set for wireless devices, they have set it to auto-select so it will choose the least congested channel and try and connect. They also auto-adjust down/up their power so they dont overlap with other points of the same network.
Dont know if that will mean much to ya sbdags. But i might try and dig up the older versions and see which version it started happening.
you recommend doing a wipe and then flashing? or is it fine to start from 5.0 and dirty flash the way up till it stops? also you recommend using a specific kernel? i have been using _that's kernel from version 5.
Cheers

5.0 and dirty flash up should be fine. Also stay on that 4 as that is a stable kernel until you can determine if there is a problem.

i was able to get a guest account and that connects no problems, but the way that i am trying right now actually authenticates through my domain account and allows me access to my works environment
thanks for the input guys much appreciated... i guess its just a lost cause.

Here my tips and tricks for getting this Root feel, but keeping the stability of stock.
1. Ad Blocker
This are local hosts, meaning that your info doesn't go to a random server and then come back to you. It stays on your device for your eyes only!
1. DNS66 This one uses a hosts file, just like adaway for those of you who used it while rooting. Since everything is done via a local DNS, you the battery life it is the same as adaway, non-existent! Given that it only blocks entire host names, it cannot block as detailed as some other ad blockers. However, I haven't seen any ads in apps or browsers and no battery hit either! Just make sure the hosts files have a red dot next to them and you have to refresh before activating. Will still block ads on device even when tethering! Great support too!
2. Ad Guard. Good ad blocker. Runs everything through a VPN though, which comes at a battery hit. This one also comes with a price tag! Offers Youtube Ad Blocking, but you must enable their DNS, which puts your information to their servers and then back to you...this blocks ads about 50% of the time. Good support too!
3. Adhell Uses Samsung Knox to block ads and trackers. Blocks most things on webpages and apps (no youtube), but saves a ton a battery since it doesn't require VPN. Not as good as blocking as the first two, but does work a little. Just my opinion though. Also, it is FREE!
4. Disconnect Pro Similar to Adhell, but a paid app,but can be found for free during sales. Search the Galaxy App Store to buy it. Uses Samsung Knox too.
5. AdClear. Some have had success with this, I've had mixed results.
6. BlockThis! Works well, but caused issues on some webpages.
As with all of the above, you will need to whitelist some apps for them to work properly. Like, AdHell and Disconnect have the Google Play Music bug. If you find an app is using a ton of battery, it may need to be whitelisted...usually, google apps have this problem.
2. Hotspot Hack
1. Enable developer mode:
a. Go to settings
b. Scroll down to about phone
c. Repeatedly tap "Build number" until developer access is granted
2. Get ADB installed w/ drivers
a. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
3. Enable USB Debugging
a. Go to settings
b. Go down to developer options
c. Scroll down to USB Debugging and turn it on
d. Connect phone with USB to PC
4. Get into ADB shell
a. Open a command prompt (windows key + R , type "cmd" in the box and press enter is my favorite way)
b. Run:
Code:
adb shell
5. Enable the bypass
a. Disable the DUN requirement
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
b. Overwrite the DUN APN
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_apn "APNDUN,n.ispsn,,,,,,,,,310,120,,default,mms,dun"
6. Turn off Mobile Data
7. Turn on HotSpot
8. Turn on Mobile Data
Every time that you want to use the hotspot you have to turn data off; turn hotspot on; turn data back on. When you disconnect your hotspot you need to do the following:
1. Turn Hotspot Off
2. Turn Mobile Data Off
3. Turn Mobile Data On
People will complain, but after you run the code the first time, turning hotspot on and off literally takes just seconds.
3. Youtube Ad Free
1. Youtube in the background, downloading, and so far ad free Youtube can be achieved with OG Youtube. Read the OP and also install this apk found in post 5592 It doesn't say, but in combination with DNS66, I haven't seen any ads after installing this and disabling the old Youtube. It will occasionally ask you to update and just hit Later.
2. If you want to use the original Youtube app, this doesn't block ads, but it does silent and auto skip them. Cygery
3. Use an VPN to route your data somewhere and back. It isn't 100%, but AdGuard offers this type of service. I believe Block This and AdClear may too.
4. Remove Bloatware
This is probably the biggest difference between root and non-root. They are all installed with the same apps. With root, you can delete the system apk or, with root and non-root, you can use a package disabler, you can disable unwanted apps. The problem is that occasionally you will disable or delete something that will cause a chain reaction leading to boot loops or excessive battery drain.
I find it best to go to the application manager and manually disable or uninstall through it. This way, the system will know what's there and what isn't...no surprises. You can uninstall the Sprint crap like TV, Tech Support, Fun and Games, Family Locator...basically every Sprint app except for voicemail. Not disable, but uninstall them completely!
You can disable the following (probably more, but I must be using them): Amazon; Kindle; Facebook; Instagram; Lookout; Messenger; Prime Stuff; S Health; S Voice; Samsung Gear; Youtube (remember the tip above); some of the Google Play apps like Movies and TV; probably more too, but I must actually use those apps.
I'm sure there are some that I'm missing too....I remember uninstalling some weather app too.
The point is that Nougat seems friendlier in terms of uninstalling or disabling software compared to Marshmallow.
5. Xposed (not right now)
Not available for Nougat at the moment. But this update is really customizable!
6. Other tips/tricks
1. Skip Tracks With Volume Keys
1. Frinky Music Controller Allows you to skip tracks with screen off.
2. Noyze Not sure if still being developed, but works. Let's you skip tracks by long pressing with screen off.
Doze Related
Remember to whitelist apps you want running in the background...like Pandora, Google Music, etc. I would leave them off at first and if it cuts off when the screen is off, you need to white list it.
I haven't used these apps in Nougat as the new doze seems fine, but to each his own:
1. ForceDoze puts your phone into doze mode without the motion detectors and 30 minute wait. Great app! Does require you to install adb (adb installer) since you have to run a command to get it to run properly. Check Disable motion sensing and turn off while charging
2. Greenify The auto hibernation works great if we had root, but we don't. It works, but can be extremely annoying at times and can drain battery because it may continuously try to force stop/close an app you greenify. Plus, it will take a few seconds to re-unlock your phone immediately after you turn off the screen. However, I use it with force doze for the aggressive doze. I saw a difference in battery life by using them both. Still need to adb a command
Other Tips
Besides the obvious of gmail/facebook/whatspp/twitter/snapchat syncing
1. Turn off wi-fi scanning
2. Back up my data for Samsung and Google under back up and reset
3. Turn off some features under advanced features in settings...for example, palm swipe to capture if you never use it
4. Location History under Location
5. Change locating method...I leave mine on GPS, wi-fi, mobile, but some people want more battery life and turn it off.
6. Turn on developer options and change animations to 0.5
7. Turn off Always on Display under settings > display. I like it, so I leave it on...but takes about 2% an hour

Awesome. And you should be able to use phone data with this method while tethering too. @paul2112 did most of the legwork for this fix.
Please credit @paul2112 for the Hotspot fix in the OP. He pioneered this effort.

Read the credits... he's been there since the post. I slightly modified his code because this was the only way I could get tether data and phone data to work simultaneously. I couldn't get both on his last suggestion.

No problem. But this fix was the only way I was able to get phone and tether data working together. Not sure if you had success with what he posted, but I always would get one or the other.

Im confused on what the "hotspot" hack is. When I turn on Hotspot on my stock S7e, it turns off WIFI and only uses LTE. Are you saying this hack will allow us to use hotspot with WIFI?

No. It will allow you to make your phone a router and use your phone data for internet.

Ok, I'm lazy. Is there a single button method for the toggling for hotspot? I'm using my phone as a hotspot for a tablet thats installed in my car and so being quick is important. I'm trying to build something using "Automate" app but does anyone have something already configured?
fyi, actually just turning on hotspot or off now does the trick. No need to toggle mobile network on/off. I'm on Sprint.
I can confirm Hotspot last through new android update/dated 3/29 heres a screen shot
new update 5/31/17 hotspot non root method sticks and works fine. id like to offer a new method and give thanks to the guy that found it maybe you can incorporate this into your guide so easy a caveman can do it lol

Success! (Stock SM-G930P & SM-G935P)
Thank you so much for this guide! It's been the only successful method to get unlimited hotspot working on my S7 & a friend's S7 Edge! (both stock & most recent firmware) :good:
When using this method, I achieve hotspot as mentioned....but loose ipv6 by doing so!? Any ideas on why or how to fix so when I toggle data/hotspot I can keep ipv6 connectivity, thanks
