Review: Nite Ize Steelie Car Mount - Galaxy S 5 Accessories

Just picked this up today at a local farm store (Rural King) for $14.91. I'm Pretty shocked I found it this cheap, since its retailing for $34.99 on NiteIze's website. https://www.niteize.com/product/Steelie-Car-Mount-Kit.asp. It comes with an alcohol swipe, for prepping the area you'll be sticking Steelie too. There's also a 3M primer stick for when applying onto a soft, vinyl, rubber, or textured surface.
I like how it's a ultra minimal car mount and can be placed just about anywhere with its 3M VHB foam adhesive. I've got the magnetic metal backplate attached to my Speck case, which will hold my phone during travel. I've attached some pics and will update how this mount handles in my large car. If it performs good here it'll work in probly any situation. Also it'll stick to almost any metal surface, like my refrigerator lol. I stuck my phone to a metal picnic table and the neodymium magnet is strong enough to to move/wiggle the table before it lets go.
Update: 5/19 After 314 miles of bouncing around, I can say this is a very solid car mount.

How was the backplate attached on your case?
Like, is it removable?

It's attached with the adhesive foam tape. Personally I've removed it to get it more towards the center of my case and have had no issues. I would think if the adhesive wore out you could get the 3M double sided 11 psi tape and repair it that way. Also there is replacements sold on the website.

So it's just stuck on with tape, meaning i would have to remove the phone from the case if i didn't want a case with extra thickness?

Yes. I chose to stick it to my case since this Speck case scuffs up easily. I'll be getting another case that I'll use outside my truck. I have no problem swapping cases when I get ready to drive or get out of my truck. Also I don't really mind it on my Speck case currently since it provides a little lift and makes the speaker sound better. I don't notice the back plate either in my pocket.

extended life battery WITH snap holster

does anyone have any pics of an extended life battery with the phone in a snap holster. the ones where the phone faces inwards to see how secure it is. thanks

It's secure enough where it won't fall out, but I'd get some foam and put it on the top arm so it can't rattle. That thick rubbery stuff with one glue side should work.

im hoping that snap holster will hold this as well, is yours the seidio one or just a sprint/generic one? Thanks again
I have that same battery and the sedio innocase with belt holster. If u leave the front half on the phone it fits snugly. Obviously the back won't fit anymore. But it is working out great. I am tryingto figure out a way to modify the back. Will let u know if I figure something out.

Ok. Finally modified my innocase. I cut it inhalf right below the flash hole on it then super glued it to the extended battery door. Now it fits even better in the holster. There is no movement at all.

Can you put the phone in the other direction and use it as a car mount? I could then use this that I have in my car.

well obviously im still waiting on the battery. Coming from hong kong. But my clip holster came in today and my god i am shocked at how sturdy this thing it. And from looking at it i think the extended battery will fit just fine in there. with no kind of movement in said clip

Could one of you brave souls take a picture of the phone in this holster but having it face forward instead of toward the case. I want to use it as a car mount with the krusell link above that I already have from other phones.

I have the Seidio holster + innocase combo and it will fit with the front facing out, but it's a tight fit. There is some resistance on the top clip when taking the phone out, but that's to be expected. I don't have my extended battery yet so I I'm not sure if it'll fit with the battery while facing screen out. Let me know if you still want pics of the innocase+ holster facing out.
Honestly though, why not just buy a cheap car mount? You can get a car mount for $10 or less online nowadays, wouldn't it be easier to just buy a separate mount?

I attempted to do it and no you can't. Due to the angle of the extended battery it won't slide in. I was hoping it would because I have a new holster on the way because my clip broke so i was going to then modify by broken clip and turn it into a car mount. I will keep you posted and post back in this forum if I get it figured out.

I used a small drill bit (can't remember the size) and drilled a few pilot holes. Then i used a lighter to warm up the case and warm up a pointed razor blade and very carefully slide the knife from hole to hole. Then i used sand paper (heavy grit) to grind down the ruff edges. I then used the lighter to burn off all the plastic shards sticking off the case.
Did you get it figured out?
No not yet. Been working a ton of hours at full time and part time job then spending rest of time with wife and 1 year old daughter

Back Cover Stain

So I bought a back case for my Galaxy Tab Plus, a leather book case.
I have been noticing a stain at the back cover. It looks like it was absorbed by the battery cover, I don't know how to remove it. Any help?

Same thing here, tried wiping it off and didn't work. I opted to place a protector at the back to prevent it from getting worse. Will try to clean it up tho, looks ugly...

I wish someone has found the solution...
Do you think Samsung offers back cover replacement? Of course not free.
Some more information might help.
What does the stain look like? Does it cover the entire back of the tablet or just one spot? Is there an odor coming from the stain? Have you examined the case to see if there is any substance that might be transferring from the leather or lining, such as a dye?
Have you stopped using the case? What brand and model of case?
A picture of the tablet back and of the case would be helpful.

It looked like the stain was stick in the plastic. It's kinda black. I still have the plastic on the back, but the exposed part collected the stain. It's like dye transfer
The texture of the case where teh back cover is placed is smooth. It's like matte. I bought a generic case for p1000.
Lesson learned. Cheap and/or generic accessories designed for another model than the one you have should be avoided in the future. Chuck that case in the garbage and contact Samsung support to see if they can suggest anything that can be used to safely remove the stain without damaging the plastic surface of the tablet.
Good thing you kept the plastic shipping protector on there or it could have been worse. Good luck.
I eMailed Samsung, they told me that the replacement for the Back Cover is 2,512 Pesos (Labor included)... It is equivalent to almost 50$ -.-

The back of mine 7.0 plus is gray not easy to stain, does yours white? What case is the best for 7.0 plus without too expensive? Samsung case is a hard one, I don't like it.
If the back of your Tab is glossy white plastic, the stain actually can be removed without damaging the device. This happened on my OG Galaxy Tab which had a white plastic back. I used an isopropyl alcohol wipe and a bit of elbow grease, although a bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball would do just as well. You'll have to rub a bit, and you'll probably go through a few cotton balls, but it worked for my tab.
A word of caution though. If the finish on your Tab is damaged, (if you have deep scratches or chips,) I wouldn't recommend using alcohol on it as it will do more harm than good. If the finish is in good condition, just stained, go for it with the rubbing alcohol. Good Luck.
the problem is similar to my problem...i am new and I can't post photos of my tab until 8 posts
I have the same problem. It came from the Leather Book Case and it's not getting worst actually. It's just there now. Tried toothpaste and a "cleaner" for tech stuffs and none works.

Sorry the back isn't so clear, flash kinda reflects and it's dark in the place I took these pics. As you can see it follows the pattern of the case, which obviously states that it came from the case. If it was clearer, you would see that only the hole where the camera is placed is the "whiter" side of everything. Lol. Hope someone can help us. It's kind of expensive to change it.
Update: Used the Alcohol method mentioned above. Works well, but does not completely remove the problem.

It's not the same actually. Yours has stitches while mine does not but more or less the same shape and size. Haha. You should try the Alcohol thing, it works great.

Toughest case?

Hey all,
I just ordered a Compact and am looking forward to it a lot (my current phone is a Samsung Galaxy 4G so this is going to be a huge huge upgrade).
I've had an OtterBox case on my Galaxy but OtterBox doesn't make Sony cases. Can any of you recommend a really really tough case for the Compact? To me, looks are far less important than making sure the case doesn't get broken.
I've also been looking for the most protective case which would look and _protect_ like the otterbox or griffin cases. The most closest thing i found was the case-mate tough case. There are some pics somewhere in this forum, just google it.
I can think of a few:
1. Incipio DualPro
2. Case-Mate Tough/Tough Naked
3. Elecom Heavy Duty Zero Shock
4. Ringke Fusion
But not sure whether these cases have opening for the magnetic port.
Thanks! That gives me a good start.
I've decided on the Case-Mate (not through a very scientific process, just that it's available and looks like similar construction to the Otterbox). One thing to note (for anyone viewing this thread later) is that apparently it does NOT have an opening for the magnetic charging port.
have a look on devilcase... not actually supertough but a good compromise!
This is my case-mate
Few days ago i got CASE-MATE BLACK TOUGH HARD CASE from eBay http://www.ebay.ie/itm/201059557589?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
case is very good, only i had to cut hole for magnetic charging port the case is really worth its price, fits perfectly

How did you managed to cut out the dock connector like that?
I've also thought about that, but last time I tried to modify a Case Mate tough case on my Galaxy I9100 it wasn't that smooth like yours.
What kind of knife or device did you used for it?

Can you explain? And after i did the cutout did you used any material to smoothen the edges?
start cut from inside like in this pic start cutting at the fold edge, its help, Cut slowly and several times slide your knife across the cut line.
the red line is NOT a line of cutting its shows only the edge on which I cut.

I see now thanks.
Well the inner side will be the easier one as it's more rubberish. I think I will spend more time on the outer side to make it nice.
Is there any way or trick to make the hole measuring easier or you just simple marked it somehow ?
Has anyone come across a ruggedized case like these for these ones for the z1?

I had 1 case ****canned it. Don't use cases now, the manufactures go through so much design to make these phones fit and be slim it is almost a shame to put a case on it. I have dropped mine at least 8 times a few little dings, I wash it daily with soap and water and have yet to have an issue..
.lovemeicase.com/goods.php?id=74[/url] I just got this case and it is awesome, plus it doubles as a crime deterrent. I bought it off eBay though for only 25 I only knew about these cases because I had one for my iPhone 5.

Soap is not good on the phone my friend.
Body Glove case. Really nice grip, anti microbial, and feels very high quality. Snugs the phone tight. Also have the ZAGG glass protector and it works fine with it.
Spigen Tough Armor Case - Gunmetal
This case provide good protection and is very compact. I dropped my phone once and it seemed to provide very good protection.
The buttons are easy to press and I actually like the buttons are flat along the edge of the case, so the chance to mistakenly press the buttons is less!
The cutouts are very good. There are 4 tiny bumps at the back corners that prevent the back from scratches and lift the speaker a little bit above the surface you placed on, so less damping to the speaker.
This case feels high quality made, easy to hold in the hand, and looks good.
Agreed

I actually bought this case before I even bought the phone! It just gives the phone a rugged look and feel. With the phone by itself I didn't necessarily care for the look of it and knew I wanted a case for the S5. Couldn't be happier with this purchase. I even like the ridge edges it has and makes it easier to grip.
My newest spigen case in my collection.
Picked this up from a Cellaris kiosk in the mall.. Had one on my note 2 for the last year and it did an excellent job protecting my phone, so I went back and got one for my S5, I love the kick stand, but the one on my note 2 case seemed more durable than the one on my S5 cases.
They will usually mix and match colors to suit you, and I went with this combo, for the heck of it heh.
heres a link to their webpage, they have other colors at the kiosk, but you get an idea. most of the cases are cruddy, but the kiosks have otterboxes, kraken, and some other decent named cases.. this case set me back about $30.. worth it in my opinion.

cheers
I'm using the incipio teal/cyanish with grey. its kind of funny how small the phone is when I have to take it out (like 2 times now) but this thing is durable. I've dropped it and kicked it a few times and it holds up. love how it keeps my camera nice and tucked in. looks pretty cool too but it's built for abuse it seems.
These are my cases up to this moment. unfortunately, i can't use most of them since i'm using the OEM qi.

Show us your Frost in a case

I cannot decide which case I want for my Frost. I haven't used cases on my last phones because they all had a pretty durable surface in the back (Leather on the G4, Wood on the Moto X, Hard Plastic on the Nexus 6). With the glass and the soft aluminum on the 6P, I don't want to be case-less anymore.
I want the Adopted MicroFiber Quartz case, but it's sold out. I also love the Slick Wraps Galactic and Hero skins, but I've had clear cases in the past and they get scratched, dirty and ugly very quick, so I wish there was a case with those designs on the outside.
Once a full solid case covers the back, the whole point of getting a Frost becomes moot, which makes me a little sad.
What are you using and what does it look like?
I get my frost nexus tomorrow, i'm curious about this too.
My frost slid out of my front pocket on my shirt while leaning over to pick something up in the kitchen. It bounced twice on the tile. Both spots have small dents in the aluminum from about a 2 foot drop at most. This arrives tomorrow. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01637DS70

I am expecting the spigen ultra hybrid clear today, it is overdue. Will try and remember to post pictures in here.
Just got my frost, but my clear Spigen won't be here for a few days. Will post when it comes in.

Ugh, you would think so! At least that didn't happen.
Got the case today, yesterday was a holiday for usps. Also put on the free screen protector until my intelliarmor arrives....whenever that is.

Not bad! What do you think of the headphone jack cover? Can it be removed? They describe some sort of "personalization" that can be done

The personalization is this paper pattern that is the same size as the hard clear part. Its a guide for cutting something to fit.
I don't see the headphone jack cover being a problem. It appears that it could easily be removed. The hole that is there for the headphones is just barely big enough for my audio technica's plug.

Thank you for the pics. Looks like the Spigen is arriving to buyers now, but it has a "crack" near the fingerprint sensor that seems to be part of the mold.
Anyone else have a case on their Frost?
I have the Ringke Fusion case its a nice case and someone already posted pics with it.
I like the Spigen case better with air cushion for drop protection (Dropped my S6 Edge dozen times and not a single dent). Except it has a big window for the camera visor(lots to go wrong).
Ah, so that's what the cap is for! Dust protection! Where did you get that slide from? I don't see it on the Amazon product page or Spigen's site.
There's a thread of people getting the Spigen case and they all have a "crack" on the Nexus Imprint ring. Looks like something the mold has, maybe that's why they were selling them cheaper on Amazon
I've got a frost in the spigen crystal clear case. No crack on my plastic back.

Thanks, that's good to know. I ordered one from Amazon. Ships on the 18th, if I don't like it, I'll return it.

Buyer has to pay for return shipping. I'm trying to return mine and just found this out. Mine has a few defects out of the box so hopefully I won't have to shell out more money to send it back.
@havanahjoe Yeah,I think the frosts are delayed. My coworker ordered one on day 1 of preorders before i ordered my graphite and I got mine like 2 weeks ago, he's still waiting....
