[Q] So, I'm rooted but... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I can't flash a recovery. What are some cool things I can do with the phone on just root. Any apps I should definitely download?

You can get rid of all the bloatware that comes pre installed on the phone. You can enable certain features that are built into the code but not in use by stock. You can Flash custom Roms, themes, boot animations, and kernels. You also can install ad blockers to banish those annoying ads and just overall take back control of YOUR phone. There are 2 apps I always use (titanium backup and root explorer). There are other free apps out there like root explorer but I am so used to the app and love the features I wouldn't give it up. Also maybe look into apps like rom toolbox or android tuner. They have a ton of useful features and help eliminate having a bunch of root apps.

Without a custom recovery he can't install other ROMs correct? Or can you still do it through Odin?

Safestrap allows custom rom flashing, 4.3 TouchWiz only though.
That is a custom recovery.

[Q]uninstalling at&t preinstalled apps?

how? do i need to root the phone? or is there a way to do it without? i don't really use the preinstalled at&t stuff and i'd like to have it gone.
You have to root. Then you have 2 options. Install titanium backup and freeze or uninstall all the att bloatware.
Or
Find an awesome rom and follow instructions on how to flash it. The custom roms have all the bloatware crap removed.

Stock ICS without bloat?

Just upgraded from the Infuse and HOLY CRAP what a difference. The Infuse, in some ways was really a misstep for Sammy. Hardware just didn't really work well. Anyway...
Looking through ROMs I was hoping to find a stock ICS where someone had pulled out the bloat. I didn't see it, but I may have missed it.
Thanks, and glad to have switched forums! Ha.

Agreed - it's a good ROM if you are looking for something close to stock with options. Only a few small issues of stability so far.
Root the stock ROM then debloat (disable apps first) yourself
would agree about embryo. stock, debloated.. unless you choose to add it. he built in a nice rom customizer as well. personally, didnt have any problems with it.

Bloat
Just root and install Titanium Backup. There should be a freeze list in one of the stickies. You do not have to install a different rom at all.
I recommend that you just freeze the apps. If you uninstall them, you will have to reflash your phone with the stock rom if you want to send to Sammy or take it back to AT&T...
You can also just make a complete TiBU of the entire phone and save on your computer then restore them when you want to get rid of the phone in a legit way...

No need for a titanium backup or anything...I just disable an app (like yahoo finance or whatever crap) from all apps section in settings ..then I delete the .apk file from /system/app (and the .odex if the rom is not deodexed)..After any debloat you will have to flash the whole stock rom anyway if you get a big system problem (or restore a nandroid if you made a backup .. Which I hugely advice to do before messing with the phone)

is it easy to root&custom rom?

thanks what about speed before custom rom and after? wondering if its worth the money to get one
Its almost the same but with root you can freeze any apps that you dont need or run in background completely to make your device a bit faster with no lag
PS:you can try Android Revolution HD rom
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda premium
Custom roms generally are tweaked to be a bit more speedy, have the bloat taken out and allow you, the user, to do things that are usually not allowed or limited.
Don't ask what is the best rom as it is rude and will start a rom war. You need to go to the developement section, pick the roms that are compatible with your device, n8010/13 rom won't allow the n8000 to use its phone functions, and then read the posts.... Decide what you want then flash. The beauty is, as long as you do a nandroid backup, you can return to your stock rom or try another rom as many times as you want...

Removing Apps Question

Just got my S3 today.
Rooted it when I walked in the door.
I'm not new at all to rooting but I was wondering if using ROM toolbox was safe to use for removing Verizon's bloat from the stock ROM.
I'm trying to just stay stock here...

I run rom toolbox on mine and I have used it to remove apps. I use andybones rom and they are all gone anyway. I really don't remember if it can remove all the bloat or not.

I know for a fact that Titanium Backup works, used it the other day. I can't think of any reason Rom Toolbox wouldn't though
I just used Rom Toolbox to uninstall a system apk. (Only a wallpaper apk) bit o it worked. I usually use TiBu.

Does anyone know if someone has posted the stock 4.1.2 OTA ROM without the bloat? Or should I do this?

How to get rid of CM "bloat?"

Hi pple say" WTF there is none "! Well terminal emulator, voice dialing etc, and others I don't want our are covered by apps that do other stuff too, so it's bloat to me but I can't wipe it, just freeze. Anyway to remove the junk?

another alternative (which is what I do) is write a flashable zip with an updater-script that deletes the things you do not want.

Freezing is the best option in this case. That way, you don't need to do it every time you update the ROM.
Second best is zip script.
Every ROM has bloatware. Even stock Google has crap nobody wants.
These things take a minuscule amount of space.... Freezing is the best way. Titanium backup.

I think someone else mentioned TiBU allows you to convert/freeze/delete system apps.
