Battery charging time - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is everyone's average time to charge from 0 to 100. I'm trying to decide whether I need to replace my battery. Thanks in advance
Edit: I'd like to know the charging time with the stock wall charger.

with the stock charger, about 2.5 hours. i went and bought a 3.1 amp charger yesterday, and it charged my phone from 5% to 100% in 1 hour 30 minutes!
it would all depend on the charger you are using(no, they all arent equal), and whether you are charging via wall or usb.

Ok Now this game is getting dirty and don't bring nationality in between....as per you have done b.tech whats the big deal in it.
On topic nexus 5 uses battery charging IC( TI BQ24192) which does not support more than 1.5A current so even if you use a 10A charger max it will take is 1.5A.

Thread temporarily closed... stay tuned...
EDIT: Thread re-opened and cleaned.

he changed his battery as well, to one thats 3 times as big. so his post is meaningless to the op, considering that what he was talking about is not standard for a charger nor battery for the nexus 5. he was just trying to make himself appear better than he actually is.

i used my nexus 7(2012) charger on my nexus 5 for a month, it did alright

Just did a full charge on the stock charger. Took exactly 3 hours while the phone was on. I used it for about 10 minutes while charging. Is this normal compared to everyone else?

Has anyone checked their charging rate with a battery monitoring app ? I have been experimenting with different chargers and I can't seem to get the charge rate >1A. The max I have been able to get with the phone in idle with the screen off is 1010ma.
This is nowhere close to the 1.5A max.
I'm running Carbon ROM + LaboDJ's version of Franco r49. I've tested using the Nexus 4/Nexus 5/Nexus 10/Blackberry Playbook chargers.
To charge from 0 - 100 takes me over ~2.5hours.

My nexus 7 charger takes just over an hour from 10 to 100.

[Q] How long does the initial charge take?

Hoping to receive my One X tomorrow at work and I'm wondering if I will have time to give it a full charge before I leave for the day. Does anyone know how long the initial charge takes?
Mine came with quite a lot of charge. I don't think it matters if you charge it fully the first time. The batteries don't have memory.

The note battery is 2500 mah vs a little less than 1900 mah for the HOX so yes it will charge faster than the note.

I think this is the most useful answer in this thread. Is the initial charge the same as a normal charge or do we need to lose charging for like 14hrs?
When I first got mine the initial charge was over 2 hours and I didn't even turn it on until it was finished charging.

Just an FYI, the initial battery life (like the first few charges) will be abysmal, don't judge the phone based on that. Give it like 3-4 charges and you will see your battery life improve tremendously.

Standard Qi Wireless Charger (China made)

Hi guys,
I'm relatively new to this forum and I was wondering if anyone here have had any experienced with a standard generic Qi charger from China. I'd recently purchased one online and have been using it for over 2 days now without any problems.
My intention was to actually try this product first before I get a charger from reputable brands such as Energizer or even the Nexus Orb. Is there any difference between these charging pad or should I just stick to the one I have now?
Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
it would be helpful if you can mention the brand name or post a pic, if you still cant provide url. i'm recently ordering fasttech wireless charger too, still waiting to be delivered.
As long as it is charging the device, and it doesn't feel like it is getting too hot, then I would stay with what you got.
I think the benefit of the orb is that it holds it at an angle so you can see it while sitting, but that is just a small benefit that normally doesn't matter.

Just got a fasttech charger, figured Id give it a shot. Makes me appreciate the orb more and makes me feel better about spending twice as much on the orb. The orb uses micro USB (aka universal), secures the phone and doesnt have the obnoxious blue LED on it. Also, the fasttech seems finicky about charging, you have to get it just right. The orb doesnt seem to care.
Something weird happened to my charging pad last night. Apparently, I wanted to gauge how long will it take for the pad to charge my Nexus 4 to 100% from 10%. So after making sure that my battery was at 10%, I left it on the charger and went to bed.
However earlier this morning, I find that my battery was only at 84% charged (after nearly 5 hours of charging). A quick look at the battery stats shows that it charged normally from 10% to 80% and then dropped down to 70% (on battery and pad did not charged, I reckoned). After that, it was charging again to 84% and stayed flat at that percentage till morning. Weird right?

I don't think so because I set JuiceDefender to switch my device to Airplane mode at night. It's really weird...

Extremely hot (60C?) phone when charging last night, need help!

Hi XDA
I was leaving my phone charging last night as usual, but when I wake up this morning, my phone is extremely hot, maybe at least 60 degree celsius(140F) for I literaly can't touch it, it burns. The phone is powered off and when I turned it back on (thank God it did turn on) after cooling down, it's only like half charged. And the battery itself appears to be normal as usual. This never happened before and my battery temp never goes above 40 degree.
The first thing I can think of it's a failing battery, but can any other things cause it too? What should I do? Will it be safe to charge it again?
BTW, I'm using the Sumsang Galaxy R I9103 and the stock battery, with CM 10.1 nightly builds.
Bump? I tried to carefully charge it a few times and it seems just fine, any ideas? I've already ordered a backup battery online just in case
you shouldn't put your phone to charge for the whole night... an average phone gets charged in almost 4 to 5 hours... hence you may risk damaging your battery.... other thing could be that your battery is already gone worse as you suggested.... it is good that you ordered a new battery. just don't keep it on charging the whole night...
PLEASE HIT THANKS IF THIS HELPED
I leave my phone plugged in overnight to charge as well and I've never had such a problem. Seeing as your phone was turned off during the charging, my best guess is that your battery is failing or your charger is failing. If you have an extra charger, you could try that, if now I would just hop online and buy a new set.
Good luck!

[Q] What is the difference between classic Li-Ion battery and Li-Po batteries?

I've seen a lot of threads on other forums on this topic and actually didn't find the right answer to the question. It seems more of an philosophical question because some people say something and others something completely opposite. So if anybody who knows a bit more on the topic would like to describe and discuss this for a bit, I'd be really happy! =)
So: What is the difference in different aspects of normal Li-Ion batteries compared to Li-Ion Polymer batteries (like ones in our Nexus 5 devices)?

LiPo batteries are used because they can get a higher energy density in a smaller form factor, and the batteries can be "shaped" to any configuration.
The only real disadvantage is that the LiPo batteries don't typically have as good a recharge cycle life as LiIon, but that depends on so many factors that it's hard to pin down.

Thank you very much for your answers! It really helped me. So therefore I might have to change battery sooner on my nexus 5 than if it was normal Li-Ion battery? Is it possible to do it after 1 year before battery warranty goes off?

Eh, LiPo batteries typically hit 70% capacity after about 700 charge cycles. It will still be usable, but if you compare day 1 battery life to day 800 battery life, you'll see a decrease.

Hmm thank you all for your answers. Yes it's logical that battery will loose its capacity over time but it will probably do it for about 2 years. If it went really worse I could probably just take it to my provider and let them replace it. I guess it cannot be that big of a problem after all =)

Main problem in nexus 5 battery is its Heating and drainage problem in a short time.
I personally suggest you no problem in its Battery but use your phone as a phone not like a music system or as a gaming gadget always.

I am not really a hardcore user I have some apps for checking email, social networks and some news... From time to time I listen to some music or play some very light game but It is very rare I like that my phone works as I like that's why I like to be rooted and running what I want on it and optimize it differently in different moments (between performance and battery life).

Not meaning this thread, but I've seen so many heated debates on how our phones "should" be charged...and how the battery works.... But as said....if in 2 years my 6 hour screen time and 28 hours total is reduced to 5 hours screen time and 22 hours total.....that won't bother me very much.
Just enjoy the phones....forget about battery science.

noob but related question. if i am not using it, is it ok to keep it connected to the charger so it stays topped up? or better for battery longevity to run it down to say 30% or so and recharge. i am specifically talking about nexus 5. thanks.
also as one poster advised not to have it connected to charger while it is in use.....
how about when tethering (drains 6% per hour) or downloading (drains 16% per hour), keep it connected or not.
thanks again.

Does the quick charge feature make up for poor battery life?

Simple question guys.

Impact on Battery Life with Quickcharge
I have not experienced any Battery Problems jet and i'm charging it every night and my Battery is fine.
quick charger is in the box still. I use what was a Blackberry tablet charger 1.8A with fixed 6ft MicroUSB cable attached. I charge every night and after the first couple days where I was using it constantly I've made it every day without having to charge up. 15-16 hours with more to go before hitting the sack. I always charge when sleeping.

I know a lot of people are getting below average battery life but in my case I'm very impressed with the battery life. I had my first S6 which was decent in battery life for a month, then I switched to the LG G4 for a couple of weeks and now I'm back on the S6. Battery life has really impressed me granted I'm rooted and running a custom rom.

Running rooted stock on ATT, Google Now and location history off, location set to GPS only, I typically get 16-18 hours off charger with 3.5-4 hours screen on. Mostly Facebook/browsing/forums/g+. No gaming.
just as 1st reply...
yes
I'm getting a minimum of 5 Hours screen on time over 48 hour period and around 5.5 to 6 over 24 hours. Quickcharge just means I won't be caught short if i'm using GPS a lot.
I am still testing differences between regular Samsung charger and the quick one ... And for now I think if you charge your phone over night with the regular Samsung charger it gets a bit better ... But I still need more time to come to dome conclusive answers ...

For me it seems to as I don't think there's any problem with the battery on my S6. I always have portable battery packs with me, but I LOVE the rapid charger, it's one of my favourite features. I love getting up seeing my phone at like 15% because I forgot to charge it and thinking crap have to go to work in 20 mins, and being able to plug it in and have it be at like 50% in such a short time period. I find it good enough that it's the only charger I use and make sure I don't lose it!
