I love to track my activities with Endomondo sports tracker, however it seems to always run in the background. I always disable gps and exit the app after using, but my phone battery stats are constantly showing that it uses most of the battery. I haven't used Endomondo since last charge and gps has been off. Is this common with all the fitness applications or just this?? Is there a way to prevent the app from running in background (without uninstalling)?

I used to like keeping gps on even if I'm not using it, so that in case my phone gets lost or stolen, I can track it down. But sometimes I check my home screen and see that gps is active (the icon in the notification bar) although I'm not running any apps (even in the background) that would require a gps fix.
So my question is, is there an app out there (or is it possible to develop such an app) that would keep logs of what apps or services are using the gps, so that I can track down the app using it?
It would also be useful to find out if there are any apps 'calling home' without my knowledge, and draining my battery in the process.
So..any suggestions???
Just a shameless bump...come on, no one has heard of such an app or thinks it would be useful??
Is there a definitive list of current apps that drain battery (whether on purpose or accidentally) in the background?
I have about a dozen apps installed and one that seems to consistently drain battery in the background is the Bank of America app. I'll notice my drain increasing dramatically throughout the day after I've used the app. Many hours later, I will see a Force Close message for the app.
I don't know what it's doing in the background, but it doesn't show up in the Running Applications or Services (I checked after I used and closed the app). Nonetheless, the Force Close message appears 4-6 hours later.
Has anyone else noticed similar behavior with the Bank of America app?
First make sure you don't have unneeded sync connections running. They are the fastest way to kill your battery.
Go to Settings > Accounts & Sync - Turn off the sync connections you don't need, especially anything HTC.
Use a task manager like ADT to monitor what apps are running. Some apps, like the ones included in the ROM will just run again, so no point in killing them. You could also use a battery monitoring app.
I've optimized my phone per best practices on these forums, but I'm talking about specific applications that may be buggy. The FC on the Bank of America app is unusual because it didn't show up in the Running Applications list, yet was killed later.
Are these Force Close messages (I've seen them for Bank of America and Pandora so far) Gingerbread killing off the app for memory? It usually happens many hours after I've opened the application.
This is my method: I kill all programs using the built-in task manager. Then I head to Running Services and whatever is there, it's draining battery.

I often see the GPS satellite symbol showing activity like some app is using my GPS when I dont have a GPS or navigation related app open. How can I tell what active process is using GPS at a given moment?
Thanks

Why don't you just disable it?

Because I want GPS to be ready when I do open a nav app. And I am curious if there's a way to tell what is using it.
Go to menu-system apps-running...
List all you have running when you see that gps symbol. My guess is that you may be signed into google latitude.
If it is latitude, go to google maps, settings, and somewhere in there is an option to sign out of latitude.
Its not latitude. Google sets GPS to sleep when apps are running in the background. Third party developers aren't as good as Google.
Anyone have a real answer and not a guess?
Searched very long for a solution and it was quite hard to find the solution working without root, so I'll post it here:
Get the app "GSAM Battery Monitor" from Google Play, on GSAM's start screen select "Application Usage",
then on top of the screen select to view the used GPS time.
Well, this doesn't show which app is using GPS right now but you can see how much time each app actually activated GPS since the last battery charge, so this is very helpful to determine the apps using GPS in the background.
Hi
Even if your gps is turned on, it dosen't necessarily means that gps is being used. Use Spare Parts app from play store and it'll show you what all apps used gps since you last plugged in your phone charger. And yes, don't use this app while your phone is being charged...otherwise the readings gets resetted.
Also, the android os uses gps continually, like the camera app, gallery app etc.

Since upgrading to 5.1.1, Google Play Music keeps mobile radio active even after I stop listening to streaming music. About an hour after I stop the music and exit from the app, I get a warning from Stamina Mode indicating that GPM is preventing the phone from sleeping. When I check the usage statistics, it shows that GPM is the biggest drain on my battery. The only way to stop this is to force close the app from the app manager, but then it starts again the moment I try to use it (which is daily).
Does anyone else have this issue, or at least know how to prevent GPM from keeping mobile radio active when not in use?
Problem solved. There was a bug preventing the phone from sleeping when WiFi was enabled. Changed the advanced WiFi setting to stay active only when plugged in and now the phone sleeps properly and Google music behaves as it should.

Hi does any one knows what is consuming my battery ? I have turn off WiFi put into flight mode install greenify and such but my battery life is still taking a beating.
ROM - Mokee 4.4.4
Kernel - latest xposed
Something (a background process/app/service) is constantly keeping the phone awake (doesn't let it to go to deep sleep state).
Try installing BetterBatteryStats and check wakelocks to see what's causing this.

Uninstall unusual apps and games because many games keep running in background.
Also you can install apps like Wakelock Detector from playstore which will provide you more information about the service that is using battery power.
