Wifi tether solution for rooted XT926 on KitKat - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those that have a BL unlocked Razr HD (XT926) that they have upgraded to KitKat and rooted, Topsnake's solution for restoring wifi tethering on the Droid Ultra/Maxx also works on the HD/HD Maxx.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578410
Just follow the directions and all will be good.

It works however...
Droid RAZR HD MAXX
- unlocked
- Updated to stock kitkat (OTA)
- Rooted
- wifi hack through root explorer done as instructed.
so while it works, the speeds are super slow compared to when i tethered on jellybean with the entitlement hack.
1.55 Mbps down?
any suggestions?

also, i was using the stock verizion hotspot app.
do you use something different?

For those with the XT926 or possibly other models that are sure they followed the instructions correctly but it still doesn't work, try the following because it worked for me.
1. Download and install "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot Free" by CORE TECHNOLOGY from Play Store. Probably any other one will work but this is what I used.
2. Open the new app and Change the Network SSID to anything other than the default and then set a password.
3. Turn on tethering from your new hotspot app which will just turn on your native hotspot with the new settings you entered in step 2.
4. Once you have your native app working with the new settings you can uninstall the new app and your native hotspot will still work.
Good Luck.

i was using the stock verizon hotspot app. work without using hack, will be some bug?

+1. Topsnakes method is what I did as well and the hotspot functions incredible and is recognized by all my devices...unlike most all of the 3rd party apps that I tried, which was pretty much all of them.

Tether Hack
This worked!?

Do you have limited data (2gb/month, 4gb/month, etc) and not unlimited? If so, that's why. Tethering is free for those who don't have unlimited data. The FCC came down with a ruling that says providers cannot charge extra for that since the 4g signal is a class C signal (or something like that).
But, apparently, they can still charge extra for it if you have unlimited data. So, I think it actually applies to those who have the family data-share plan that get it for free.

Worked like a champ! Which is good because my old workhouse wifitether quit working on this upgrade.

Bam, 'nother happy customer.
xt926, stock KK, rooted and BL unlocked with towel root methods.

Thanks!

This was great, but I would change his instructions a little to make it slightly more clear. I reposted them here, with my comments in [brackets]...
1. Download Root Explorer by Jrummy in the Play store. [I used SD Maid w/root]
2. Download VZWEntitlementService.apk below on your Maxx/Ultra.
3. Go into Root Explorer [SD Maid w/root] and find System folder, find priv-app, inside priv-app long press VZWEntitlementService.apk and VZWEntitlementService.odex rename to VZWEntitlementService.apk.bak and VZWEntitlementService.odex.bak and back out to first folder [go to the folder you downloaded the new "VZWEntitlementService.apk"].
4. Go to sdcard folder, download [it was already downloaded in step 2] and find VZWEntitlementService.apk that you downloaded from step 2 copy it and back out to the home folder enter the system folder and then the app folder and paste it [he means to find the system folder and then the app folder in the system folder, NOT the priv-app folder].
5. Long press on the file [the new "VZWEntitlementService.apk"] and hit permissions in the menu. change permissions Owner: Read/Write, Group:Read, Others: Read (should show rw-r--r--)
6. Exit out of root explorer [SD Maid w/root] and try to enable your native hotspot. It may force close or just check the box with no action like mine [mine just turned on, too].
7. Go back to root explorer [SD Maid w/root] and move the [new] VZWEntitlementService.apk that you put in the system folder to the priv-app folder.
8. Check the tether it should work. [I had used FoxFi w/o root for my tether app before the kitkat update. The settings under it such as the password and ssid stays the same, but I no longer enable the tether by using FoxFi. I tap on the mobile hotspot box under the "settings---more---Tethering & Hotspot-Mobile Hotspot---Mobile Hotspot"].

I tried this method on my BL unlocked and rooted XT926 running 4.4.2 KK, and while it worked, some functionality seemed to be lost as a result. For example, my voice commands no longer work when pressing the microphone. It says it can't connect to Google. As soon as I went back to the old build.prop, things go back to normal (without tethering of course).
In comparing the build.prop files there are several differences. Can anyone point out the part that needs to be modified to get the native tethering to work? I'd like to use my original build.prop and make the mods to it.

HI, WHEN I TRY TO DO Topsnake's solution, ITS NOT ALLOWING TO CHANGE NAME OF THE FILES. rESULT I AM NOT ABLE TO USE TETHERING ON xt926 VERIZON MODEL

[Q] Rooted NOOK with no root access??

I have a NOOK Tablet which is, for all intents and purposes, rooted. I've been able to do everything on it you would expect a rooted tablet to do. I tried to change my build.prop today to gain access to some different apps in the market, and I've gotten errors from every app I tried (two apps called "build.prop editor" and "es file explorer) saying that I don't have root access. All apps have been given superuser permission, and my root is toggled on in voodoo? Any ideas? I really don't think it's a bad root. Thanks.
I assume your still running stock firmware or 2.2? Just flash a new rom and gapps them you should be good, if you are running 2.2 then you options are very limited

Mobile Iron and unrooting?

I was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with using Mobile Iron with a phone that has been rooted for a few small tweaks and then unrooted.. Does it work? Can Mobile Iron tell that you were once rooted but are no longer?
I've got an AT&T Galaxy S3 that was recently upgraded via OTG to Android 4.3 with Knox and the new bootloader, etc. Unfortunately, the 4.3 upgrade has disabled my ability to tether. I'd like to apply a mod that fixes that limitation, but I don't want to lose the ability to get work email and such on my phone via Mobile Iron.. Any thoughts on whether or not it should be possible to:
1. Temporarily uninstall Mobile Iron
2. Root my phone and apply the tether mod
3. Remove root from my phone
4. Reinstall Mobile Iron and have it work?
Any thoughts, suggestions, advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

For the record, just wanted everyone to know this seems to have worked like I'd hoped! I used CF-Autoroot to root my S3 running 4.3.. (The first time I tried it I bricked my device because I didn't think to unencrypt it before I applied root. Don't do that! I had to flash the 4.3 update twice to get it all working again! )
But once I did that I was able to root the fresh install, remove tons of bloatware and apply a tether hack. Then I unrooted and reinstalled Mobile Iron and Touchdown.. So far no issues!

Hi Mr,
currently I am doing research on MDM solutions and I found some information about the detection methods MDMs use to detect root. The following four are commonly used (https://www.netspi.com/blog/entryid/209/android-root-detection-techniques):
1. Check default files and configs.
2. Check if there is a Superuser app.
3. Check permissions of some folders (i.e. /data)
4. Check is "su" commands can be executed.
I don't expect or expected it to cause any problems! Dependant on the security policy, installing some apps like thether hack, might cause a security alert though.
Sometimes applications that require root will trip the application that wants to ensure root doesn't exist. For example Citrix Home detected BusyBox existed on my system & thus flagged my phone as rooted.
There is also an Xposed Module which will attempt to hide root:

Works Great on Razr M EXCEPT!
Works greeat on .15 and RazrM..however we will need the existing Razr M build prop done as the icons get HUGE

I tried the manual version, but no luck on my RAZR MAXX HD with a stock ROM.
After rebooting, I initiate the 'Mobile Hotspot' and the text goes grey for a bit and then goes back to normal without activating the hotspot.
UPDATE: I took the 'build.prop' from the '183.46.15_xt926_tether_twrpinstall.zip' and used that instead of the one in the '183.46.15_xt926_tether_manual.zip.zip' and it worked.
UPDATE2: I think (and I could be way off here) the one in the manual version doesn't work because it is missing the line:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Does that sound about right?

Just wanted to say, this has been working like a champ until this afternoon. I ended up installing an Xposed module to get tether back, but the only change I had made was trying to install Nova (launcher) and, like an idiot, Firefox again. XPrivacy usually stops anything funky from happening, but I had quite a scare when I'd lost native tether for a bit.
Anyone else? —Anyone else even using Razr HD anymore? I got my latest new replacement from Asurion earlier this year, and it's been smooth sailing until today. I don't take OTAs (obviously: my build is ancient), but not sure why this exploit stopped working on my phone so suddenly.
Oh, still appreciate the exploit! Danke! :good:

Quick question.... downloaded the new OC4 Tether Addon from your link above and the filename says remove??? I'm pretty sure you had posted earlier in one of your other threads a method to remove the tether addon so you could take the OTA, but I'm trying to flash the stock root OC4 and want to enable the tether. Just wanted to make sure I got the right file. Thanks.

Awesome! Got it. Thanks so much for your help!
Thank you! Been looking for a native tethering fix. Worked perfect!

So, I've followed the other post to obtain root with 5.0 and have enabled tethering following this method on both mine and my wife's S5. The tethering works good, but I've noticed that the only thing we can't access is Netflix over tether to either PC or DVD Player. I have searched for a solution and haven't been able to come up with anything.
Have any suggestions?
We are on a grandfathered unlimited plan, and all phones previous to our S5 we were able to root and use Wifi Tether for Root Users without any problems. This is the first time we have used the Native Tethering app (only because I couldn't get Wifi Tether for Root Users to work on the S5).
Ok, flashed this, but how do we use it? I know this sounds dumb, but do we just turn Hotspot on, or....?
This didn't work for me. Flashfire worked fine but when I go to enable hotspot, I am told to contact Verizon. Tried reflashing but still no luck. Any ideas?
EDIT/UPDATE: I must have had the wrong file even though it was the same exact file name. Make sure the file size is 8.85 MB. I had to download from another site since OP link doesn't work.
Link fixed.
Very very useful mod. Coming from FoxFi on S3 , appreciate just being able to pull down the drawer and enable "Mobile Hotspot" in one quick click.

Verizon Pixel won't let me edit Build.prop

Ok so I have a friend that bought the pixel via verizon, and took it onto Tmobile. Trying to unlock the hotspot tether via build.prop edit.
The Pixel (Was on Android 7.1) has been unlocked via dePixel8 and rooted via Chainfire. Root Checker also verifies this.
However, whenever we try to access the build.prop through Root Explorer, ES File Manager, and the like, SuperSU prompts and gives root access but no way to save an edited build.prop.
I tried mounting /system as R/W via multiple adb commands which were unsuccessful, I think due to the new partition scheme. I don't remember the commands I used, I googled for them and have since closed those tabs.
Thought that maybe the root messed up somehow so re-did the Chainfire root with no change to the system, in fact it even seems like root is even more broken with ES File Manager no longer able to view the root directory.
We are currently downloading the google edition NDE63V Factory Image in hopes of getting rid of any hidden Verizon security "features" that may be causing this issue along with getting rid of the Verizon bootloader.
All OTAs will be sideloaded after we put on NDE63V Image to protect from a Verizon bootloader being placed back onto the phone.
Has anyone else with Verizon Pixel had issues with root features and troubles mounting anything as R/W? Any ideas on a possible fix without needing to flash NDE63V?
There's no Verizon-specific build.prop security feature to my knowledge. The command "mount -o rw,remount /system_root" should work. If it fails, can you post the error you get?

Might as well use the latest factory image. (7.1.1 build NMF260)
I updated to the latest build with a clean install. Installed TWRP. Rooted with SR5. Then did the build.prop edit and it's working fine for me. (Verizon Pixel on Verizon's network)
