[Q] Rooted NOOK with no root access?? - General Questions and Answers

I have a NOOK Tablet which is, for all intents and purposes, rooted. I've been able to do everything on it you would expect a rooted tablet to do. I tried to change my build.prop today to gain access to some different apps in the market, and I've gotten errors from every app I tried (two apps called "build.prop editor" and "es file explorer) saying that I don't have root access. All apps have been given superuser permission, and my root is toggled on in voodoo? Any ideas? I really don't think it's a bad root. Thanks.

I assume your still running stock firmware or 2.2? Just flash a new rom and gapps them you should be good, if you are running 2.2 then you options are very limited

[Q] rooted my droid 2 but superuser permissions does nothing

i rooted my droid 2 following the directions in the above forum....everything worked fine and i have the superuser permissions icon, just when you open it it is blank and does nothing.....any comments on this?
It only shows programs that have superuser permissions. Download a program that requires root and see if it works.

What kind of program requires root access? i just got my first droid and am kind of new to all of this...
SetCpu, although you have to pay for it, others are root explorer, adfree, wifi tether for root users, you can pretty much search for the word "root" on the market and play around with the apps there

Have the latest OTA can we use alt keyboards?

Hi, I installed the latest firmware upgrade. The unit runs fine... excellent. Can we run alternate keyboards while still running a stock G tablet?

You can but have to manually..

Do I have to root the tablet to do this?
I saw that post. The user is running TNT Lite on a rooted GTablet. First, do I need to root the unit? Does that wipe out the latest update? I'd like to keep this as stock as possible since I'm happy with the latest update... but I want my swype etc... Thanks for your input.

I don't think you would need root to push the keyboard file. Only issue would be if the folder permissions needed to be changed. Then you might need root. Root would not do anything to your tablet as far as updates, etc. Just lets you have access you normally would not. Kind of like being the administrator on a windows machine...
Which root prog would you recommend?
That's what I was hoping to hear. Rooting has no effect on the rom other than allowing me to get under the hood... great. I tried to copy the apk to the system/app and I didn't have permission. What you recommend to root the tablet? Thanks.

Z4root is what most use. I don't recall if it is in the market or not. It is an apk that you install and then run. You can use Root Explorer to change the permissions after that.
I don't run stock so I have to go by memory so sorry if I sound kind of vague...
No luck with OTA and swype
Tried to load swype (after rooting) on a Viewsonic ota rom. No go, many force close issues. I dropped the apk in the system/app directory, changed to permissions to match the others, rebooted and nothing. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Hiya!
I was wondering about this too.
However, my problem is that I can't find the apk for my preferred keyboard (SwiftKey Pro). I searched for it using Astro File Manager and it doesn't come up anywhere (the data files for it sure do, though. Just not the apk!).
In addition, I am not sure how to get a root file manager on to my GTablet so that I can copy it over (in Astro I found the system/app files, but I can't do anything there since I can't get root access in there with Astro).
I've looked for a root file manger in AppBrain and found one, but the Market does not see it (cannot be found) so I am stuck on how to get root access in the system/app place.

Get root features on stock ROM? (rooted phone)

I have rooted my xe via revolutionary, got the latest cwm installed and now installed superuser but how can I use root features like deleting system apks without flagging another ROM?
Thanks
SOLVED: I had just tried installing Superuser from the market. you need to flash it from http://androidsu.com/superuser/
I'm guessing this might not be possible then?
You can easily do this via something like root explorer which is a paid app, but there are other file explorers that allow root access that are free. Have a search on the market and see you come up with.

He is right if you have s-off and recovery and installed su your good. Es file explorer can be used to. Just check both root access and mount system.

Just tried es explorer, enabled root mode and it gave me an error

[Q] Root not working as expected.

I got my HTC One X about a week ago now for AT&T. Almost immediately, I tried rooting but ran into an odd issue.
Before rooting I had installed Apex launcher. There is an option in the settings to enable Root Helper, which previously would give an error message of something like, "This device does not have root access"
I went through the rooting procedure as detailed here on my mac. The script didn't work at first until I realized I had to switch it to Unix from DOS (Didn't look at the script before running) after I fixed it, it ran and rebooted twice and everything looked normal. Now I tried using the apex root abilities and it just froze and crashed.
So I booted up windows and tried using that to root, but the exact same thing happened. It seems to recognize my root, but not actually give any permissions.
I've tried using other root apps such as uninstallers, titanium backup, etc and all of them just freeze when trying to get elevated permissions.
Is there something wrong with my phone or the way I did the root?
Have you tried clicking on the su app? I had to upgrade mine.

Yea load up the Su app and ugrade binaries. That should fix the issue. Ive had issues like this on other phones.
You could also try running paulobrien's root method. That's what I used, and my phone's good.

I've also had a situation where the Busybox version installed on a custom ROM on my HTC Flyer tablet interfered with some apps (like Titanium). Make sure Busybox is up to date. I even had to install a different Busybox installer in order to get it to work right on my Flyer in that particular instance. I had to use the JRUMMY16 version in the market, and not the Stericson installer (which seem the most popular).
No packages were installed with the root.
I'll try using paulobrien's method later and hopefully that will work.

[Q] Root Access - TrickDroid?

I installed a new rom TrickDroid, and after flashing, and successfully booting up, I could not access certain things that require a rooted phone; so I ran root checker again, and it said I had NO ROOT ACCESS.
I restored my phone to the previous ROM, and all was ok..... wth? I think I had this happen to me when I installed SlimRom, but I was able to find a "Root Access" option in "Developer Options" that allowed me to tick on, root for adb and apps.
I know I'm missing it, and its right in front of me.
Just make a flashable zip of the super user app and binaries and flash it

Sorry, but how do I "make"a superuser zip and binaries? I flashed the same supersu zip that I used during the root process, not sure what you mean regarding binaries. Sorry if this question appears newbish, well I guess I am
