If you have a Google voice number like me, you are probably sad that all the third party apps that enabled VoIP using Google voice on android have stopped working. Like grooveip and talkatone.
Well here is a good news.. You can use VoIP calls from your android device. You need to do two things
1) Enable hangouts instead on talk in gmail
2) Download opera browser (any browser that can fake a desktop UA might work. I use opera)
Now, change the user agent to desktop in opera browser and call using hangouts in gmail like you usually do on a PC and it works!!!
If you already knew this, good for you. I didn't and I just found out so I am sharing an option till Google releases full hangouts Google voice integration.
Enjoy!

Thanks. I am especially bitter about this issue as I reside abroad and came to depend on Google voice.
I hope they rather, and soon, integrate features into hangouts for it. The fact they haven't is annoying.

New to android, and was wondering if there is an app that will do voicemail like iphone? I think evo has it.

Yeah, if I had to choose one thing I miss about my iPhone, it would be visual voicemail. Would definitely like to see a mod for it.
Google Voice
Google Voice is the best/free app that comes to my mind (works great for me), however I'm sure if you Google or just look for apps on the marketplace they shouldn't be hard to find...
the best visual voicemail app ive found is called youmail
I use Google voice for visual voicemail.

Duh, I completely forgot about my Google Voice account. I need to set that up haha.
Visual voicemail by Fusion
There is an app called visual voicemail. It is made by Fusion. Works great for me. I used it with Windows mobile. Had an account back then. I even get faxes to my cell number. All free when I signed up with Windows Mobile.
I don't think this belongs in the development section
this definitely belongs in general. keep the development section open for roms and fixes etc.
Anyone else think we need a q&a sections like some of the other phones?
Unfortunately for those of us that use Google Apps they left us in the dust on Google Voice.

Yes, Google Voice is pretty good. Its about as close to iphone visual voicemail as you're gonna get on the Captivate.
Plus I kind of like the transcribed voicemail emails.
How do I use that instead of att
voicemail?
Sorry for a noob q??

Log into your google account on your computer. Find google voice on google's site. There is an option to use google voice for just voice mail. There will also be instructions for setting up your phone to forward voice mails to your google voice account. When you are all done wth that, download google voice from the market and go through its options.
I did all that and google voice works seamlessly for my voice mail.
Just open another google accountunder the same email. Problem solved

Damn. I didn't know you could do that. I started another account under a different name because the market wouldn't work with my apps name.

Problem NOT solved because it's still a different account with a new contact list.
Your google voice account does not have to be the same as your primary account. I have a google apps account that I use as my primary account for contacts, email and calendars. I have a second account that I use for the market and google voice. It works fine.

But none of your Voice stuff syncs with the main account.
So far every app i've tried all require me to input my login credentials which i don't feel safe doing.
Does anyone know of any applications that uses Google authentication to tricker a GV call back? im trying to use this with Sipdroid for true VOIP calling over data.
Thanks guys.
Does any one use google voice with sip gate here?

AFAIK you cannot trigger a callback with and unauthorized client since the clients spoof the GV webapp's callback feature (not entirely certain on that one.). So you will have to trust one of the current apps, use the gv mobile website or wait for/request a client to use OAuth or some other protocol that does a similar method of authentication.
Thanks guys.

I am have that exact setup: GVoice->Sipgate->Sipdroid.
Works great on wifi but kinda sucky over 3g. But hey it is free...!
Yeah ill just have to create a throwaway account for this since i dont feel safe passing my credentials to a third party app.
I searched and I don't think this has been covered here yet

I used to use syncsms and while it was good it sometimes would just not work, and it utilized dropbox which I wasn't a fan of. This is awesome and uses google chat or email. All I did was create a new gmail just for this purpose and keep google talk logged into it on my tablet. Just wanted to share the wealth and all props goes to Koush who also developed RomManager, man that guy is awesome.
i love this app with the Chrome extension, but found that it was cluttering up my gchat contact list with people's phone numbers as contacts. To fix I set the app to only send emails and filter them in Gmail. I like the idea of setting up a separate email address to handle that issue.
I take it you have to side load on the TF? Market shows incompatible for TF but good for my N1
You install the app on your phone, then i use google talk to receive the messages on the transformer. The app just forwards the messages

Ah OK, got it thanks.
I use textab for this feature. Works very well.
I dont like using Bluetooth, and this way they don't need to be near eachother to work in case I forget my phone
TextTab does work well when I was using the beta, only thing I wish it did was enable upon boot. I always forget to enable it after phone or tablet boot up.
I use SynSMS except like mentioned it's not always reliable.
I like this DeskSMS so far. I can get rid of Mighty Text and SyncSMS and replace with one app.
Also with this as with SyncSMS, I can leave my phone home and on while out of the country and still get my SMS.
I use the google voice app on my transformer. It is the same as on my ATRIX. I can text and read and listen to voicemails.

what SMS client to I install to my tablet?
So the app can send sms, eh - that somehow worries me.
I just use google talk on my tablet to get the messages and you can respond through gtalk also

Nothing is install on the tablet, it forward your sms to Google Talk.
It work for me at first but now it does not forward amy sms to my google talk.
It does sync with my Chrome extension
mine still works, I also have the google talk desktop program and get it through there too
So if i use google voice there's no reason to use this right?
nope..not really
edit: as long as you sideload google voice onto the tablet

This uses bluetooth right?
I'm looking for a good VoIP app for my Verizon Galaxy S3. Google Voice isn't an option, as it still uses minutes.
I've tried out Vonage, which has free data calling right now, but it seems clunky to me and doesn't play so nice with bluetooth (may be due to CM 10.1 ROM though).
Other VoIP apps I've seen are Talkatone, SipDroid, CSipSimple. Anyone have experience with these apps, or have a recommendation? Thanks.

I use Google Voice in conjunction with Groove IP in order to make VOIP calls with my Google Voice number. This won't use any minutes. You can find Groove IP in the Play store.
There is a lot of apps. I use Skype on my PC because almost everybody has, and you can talk for free. But when I call to my girlfriend in UK use Smartgroschen
Spare Phone in conjunction with Google Voice has worked better for me than GrooveIP or Talkatone. It is a VOIP app even though it works together with Google Voice. I use it overseas where my phone survives off wifi only.
I see they recently updated it though and changed up the way it works in order to be in compliance with Google's new policy on the voice api (requires you to register for a free IPKall number which you add to Google voices forwarding numbers). Supposedly, quality has improved as a result. I'm still using the older version until it eventually gets blocked because quality has never been an issue for me. It's always worked better than the other for me.

Trying this now. Amazing if this works.
Thanks, this works with Opera on my tablet. It doesn't work in Chrome, even with the "request desktop site" option checked. But I expected that, since I tried it a while ago. Not sure if Firefox would work, but I'll use Opera for this. Navigating the hangouts interface is clumsy to say the least, but it's nice to have the option.
Thanks for the tip, but as expected, Google has totally hosed the Voice app. You can no longer make calls over Wifi on android so its totally useless for that. The other functions of the app are clunky and difficult. Way to flush a good idea Google.

facebook messanger has voip.
does this still work?
i used to use it like two weeks ago on a Nexus 7 (2012), with Opera.
But then I broke my tablet and got a new Nexus 7 (2013).
Now it's asking me to download the hangouts plugin.
I gave up on phone and using Google Voice voip as my number.
This is really frustrating when I'm not in front of my PC.
MO + app still works from play store
