Alright so I gave my One S to my girlfriend a few months ago after she dropped her Nexus 4 in the toilet. Fast forward to now, and the power button is not working anymore. The plunger thing that presses into the microswitch broke off somehow. I got an app that can shut the screen off and another app that lets me use the volume buttons to wake up the phone (this one seems to have impacted battery life a little bit as its a persistent service that runs). Anyways, she asks me what to do now about screenshots and I figure a software method might work. Wrong. Nothing I can find in the play store worked, complaining of no root or invalid method or something like that. Ok, I figure i'll root it. Nope, cant do the power button + volume button combos to get into recovery mode or any of that.
So now what? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Using xposed modules can resolve this issue (need root).
If the phone run a sense 5 rom, sense 5 toolbox give you the possibility to remap your keys by several methods (longs press home, long press back, swipe up on homescreen, etc).
If you're not using sense 5, gravitybox can do the job aswell on any JB/KK rom.
Its all stock up to date 4.1 I think tmo USA one s. Can't really root it now without a working power button no? Not sense 5 either does gravitybox need root?

You can root, I've rooted my One S without a working power button. Just install one of the toolkits, such as the WinDroid Universal HTC Toolkit. It carries out all the commands such as booting into bootloader/recovery automatically via adb/fastboot commands.
Once you've rooted, you should install the Xposed Framework and install the Xposed Additions and Xblast Tools modules. I use X.Additions to remap the keys so that my volume key can act as a power key, and xblast tools to add extra shortcuts to the power menu including a 'Screenshot' button, which should help you with your original request

Hi guys,
I have a little problem where my phone's power button will not function in any way, long presses, short, almost embedding my thumb in it, all to no avail. This is doubly dissapointing as I have just installed the latest dexter plus patch to fix the problem. I still had the problem on the previous version and I thought a clean start may fix it. The only way I can get the screen on is to press the media play button! Which of course isn't doing anything on dexter.
Hunches:
I have been playing with a light sensor program and using a 3 second press to turn the phone off, I am only thinking this is related as when I re-installed then turned off the phone using a battery pull, that now the media gallery button will now not work at all, so that is a change.
Second, the power button is buggered. Seems unlikely as everthing feels normal, no big drops have occurred from heights, and the button is travelling in and out as usual.
I have also noticed that as soon as I re-insert a battery that the phone starts immediately, the M pops up as if it is already posting. So maybe it is stuck down?? Again, I don't think so, as the mechanism is working per usual.
If anyone can help it would be fantastic, you guys haven't let me down yet, and this thing is purring, but unfortunately I cannot use it lol. Just my luck.
Thanks in advance
another thing, still not solved
Another thing is happening, the phone screen turns on "after" pressing the power button, it may be once or a few times, and then pressing the gallery button.?!?!
Also, at random times it plays a podcast on my phone, the exact same podcast, and from the start, though the duration may be a few seconds then repeat, or it may go for ages, its quite a rude podcast too which has caused me to throw my phone under the car seat to shut it up when people have been trying to talk to me, as you can imagine its quite embarassing.
There are no services or apps running that I can find related to music, it may happen after pressing the camera button, or opening a website.
It is still going really fast though. And I have also reinstalled the light sensor program so I can turn it on and off without causing damage to the power button.
Thanks again everyone.

please clarify
sure, so the only way I can get the screen to turn back on, after turning off as per display power saving preferences, is by pressing the power button, maybe a couple of times, then following that up by pressing the gallery button next to the shutter button, pressing the gallery button doesn't seem to be working to turn the screen on now, but this combo is.
I hope that helped.
Cheers.
EDIT:::
The gallery button alone is working again. sorry guys.
You might just want to reflash it to stock to see if this resolves the problem.
Yeah I think I may have to.
Before I do., I was reading a post on a different forum where another person was having a similar issue. They seemed to solve the problem by using rom manager to boot to a manual restore menu where there was a button tester section, after using it the power button worked for them. I tried but after resetting it displayed a triangle graphic then rebooted.
Is there any way to do this with our open recovery program or any other utility to test the functionality or maybe reset the button or apply a patch etc.
Thanks again :-D

Getting Frustrating
Alright so I followed your advice on your videos on how to reflash to stock, so of course my bootloader does not show up the same as yours on the video. I can get to the bootloader fine, using the button combo or by using quick boot > bootloader, both have the exact same result, the boot loader screens as follows:
Bootloader Fastboot mode
80.89
and that is it....
Also, my computer using rsdlite does not acknowledge the phone, not omap drivers loading etc. Followed your instructions exactly.
This is frustrating me to no end lol.
I am guessing that because I can get to the bootloader with combo no problem, that the buttons physical connections are working.. At least thats a positive.
Can I flash to stock with openrecovery? Or maybe to an earlier version of Dexters froyo? Other ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated guys, trying to use this phone at work with light sensors to turn off screen is not as easy as they say. OMG....
Thanks so much

The fastboot bootloader isn't the right one. So... if you hold volume up + camera shutter while powering on you end up in fastboot? That's really weird.
Maybe your keys have been remapped somehow? Does anyone know a chord to boot fastboot? Perhaps check to see if your USB port is clean?
Lmao
Just my luck to have a weird problem. I thought it may have been remapped so I have been trying the program buttonremap. It doesn't seem to let me do anything except stop the buttons I re assign doing anything :'(
Does anyone have a proper key mapping file that I can replace with my faulty one to hopefully fix it?
Or any other ideas?
Cheers everyone

Just checked my system / user / keylayout folder. How many files are supposed to be inside, there are a few. I checked the contents of some and they seemed to be the same. Just an idea.... thanks again.

Ok installed anyunlock it allows you to use any physical button to unlock the screen. It doesn't respond when the Power button is pressed, it responded fine to volume rockers, gallery and shutter though.
Anyone know if this would mean for sure its a physical problem before I crack it open and try and fix it.
Thanks guys.

Breakthrough!
I am pretty sure I have fixed the problem, I tapped the phone fairly hard on its sides and back, and lo and behold after a battery pull and replacement it didn't turn itself on, I waited, nothing, so then I held the power button and it started up!!!!
But....I have another problem that happened before that, I am stuck in the boot animation that open recovery uses before going into its program (i.e. where you can load nandroid, wipe dalvik cache etc).
I was about to load a new rom, and was in open recovery, had installed it and about to do the reset and the phone turned itself off, and thats when I got the problem with the sticking boot animation.
So just to be clear, I am stuck in a boot loop, but not with the M logo, the restore logo.
I hope the power button solution can help someone else, as random as it is.
If anyone could help me get out of this boot loop without flashing stock that would be great. ( i can get to the real bootloader now btw)
Thanks again everyone.
Solved it all
Just took the sd card out and rebooted. And the power is getting better after banging it.
Thanks to all.

So, is your conclusion is that the button was stuck and the banging freed it? It doesn't restick?
The Button is not perfect still. Sometimes over sensitive Occasionally it will not even work but it works most of the time. I am just wondering what cleaning solution I could use to free it some more.
It has certainly been a trying problem. Cheers for the help.
Now I need to figure out why I have this strange ghosting on the top of my screen.....

Samsung Galaxy S2 Power Button Not Working
Hi Guys,
Any solution for the power button problem? Current latest Android 2.3.3 Samsung Galaxy S2 also having the same power button problem. Most of the time I can't use my power button to turn on/off the screen (wake/sleep) and there's no menu for long tap as well. Luckily it does wake when i press the only physical Samsung center button.
What i have already tried: Factory Reset, disable Power Saving Mode, Spare Part+ (apps), Screen Off and Lock (apps), and all won't help.
Is there any current updates or patches to allow the power button to work as usual?
Thank you.
take it to the samsung technical centre
Thats if you still have warranty

won't help because this is the 3rd phone replacement from the shop with the same problem. 100% Android software problem.
I have a evo which I had rooted and left everything stock on.Suddenly the down volume button wants to engage at any given time and for extended periods of time...in call, while on home screen, when the screens off...doesnt matter engages volume down and doesnt stop..
So I thought maybe unrevoked wasnt installed so clean, since this happened the first time soon after rooting.I hoped totally wiping the phone(caulkins) would fix this button issue, which is HELL in the bootloader....AFter a full wipe and stable cyanogen7 all seemed well! the problem was gone...So I figured cool, must been some software issue. Now its back a week later,I walkd in room to see screen on battery drained and phone just vibrating away.
So I switched to armons recovery, wiped dalviks and caches...no luck so I decided I would remap the key.I got a remapping app and it didnt have a way to DISABLE the key only remapp it to another function.Needless to say any such function being pushed 100 times a minute isnt much a fix.I tried a volume blocker app which just popped up every ten seconds asking if i confirm the volume change....
I am debating on opening the phone up and seeing if its a physically stuck key...However due to the fact that I can make it happen by turning screen off then on to me says its not an actual hardware button issue...
I have an evo I use for cellular service...which I dont much mess with, this one is wifi only and running cyanogen7 and latest godmode kernel...its weird how it worked great for a week never a problem and now Im stuck in a scrolling out of control bootloader...because when i powered off lol the down button engaged while turning back on....very frustrating...
Can I DISABLE this key?
I have the same exact problem. My phone boots to HBOOT but I can't push the volume buttons to select nor can I push the power button. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
my girls volume wont turn on at all? anyone ever hear about this problem? it isn't rooted....
not sure if it will help, but try this: from the home screen, press the menu button, then choose settings>sound>volume, and check the settings for the various volumes, i.e incoming call, media, system, etc. when my phone was stock like hers, sometimes one or more of those volumes got pushed down to 0 for some reason... it was annoying, and it seemed to happen especially to my notifications volume every time i rebooted the phone! hope that helps
I'm having the exact same issue
Hey everyone. So I bought a sidekick 4g on craigslist the other day. I checked it out and thought everything was okay, but I was wrong. So far no response from the jerk who sold it to me without telling me about this problem.
The phones volume up key doesn't work 90% of the time. If I reboot the phone or leave it off for a while, the volume up key will work for a few minutes and then stop again. The funny thing is the volume up key works when I want to reboot (holding vol.up + vol.down and power button at the same time).
So is there any fix for this? Will rooting it and loading a rom fix it? Also I am new to all of this, is it even possible to root and load generginger 2.0 with a broke volume up button? The phones firmware is all up to date.
Thanks for any info and help everyone.
i'd suggest using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275116
root the phone, and then go back to stock with the heimdall and see if that fixes the problem. and if it does then you should try rooting it again and install one of the Custom ROMs because the stock OS on this phone is garbage out of the box.
but i'm no expert either, it just seems strange that only when its been on for a bit that it stops working. that it works when you boot it seems to suggest that its a software issue? somebody help me out here guys lol
Hello xda,
I have a really strange problem with my Sensation, it's a new phone that I won in a competition by HTC, I received the phone already S-OFF
The problem is that the Volume up button don't work, the volume down, power button, and capacitive buttons all working ok..
But when I reboot into bootloader, The Power button Don't work, the Volume up button don't work, and when pressing volume down it moves the cursor to the up..
So in bootloader, the volume down button acts like a volume up button and all the other buttons don't work.
The question is this problem a Hardware or software problem? what do you think? should I send it for repair?
Thank you guys,
Cheers
PS: I reinstalled a full RUU 2 times with no luck

Try using the buttons without the back case (They look like black plastic (darker than surrounding plastic). Sometimes the back panel could be faulty (at least from my experience). Since you flashed RUU I can assume that it is not software (as it replaces all software/firmware parts on the device). But did you try using a different RUU? Do SuperCID first. Else you might have to bring it to service, because this sounds like a hardware problem (albeit the bootloader part sounds weird).

Thank you for ur reply
I tried with the case off, and yes I triend using a different ruu, and I also think of a hardware problem, but which is really weird is that the power buttons works when running the phone but doesn't work in bootloader !! that proves there is no hardware problem with the button right?
and the volume down key, when running the phone it acts normally but in bootloader in acts like a volume up !!!
that's why I thought of a software problem

Yes... that is possible. But since you switched HBOOT and firmware, it means that it is (probably) not software, as you tried different versions. The buttons may work, but the problem could also be on the board itself. I don't really know how to explain this, but it seems to be the case.
You can try a ROM that assigns action to each key (or find a mod somewhere... I'm sure there is one), and mod the ROM you run to work with Slide To Wake and virtual volume control. That's how you can live even without buttons (unless a solution is found). Also you can flash a touch enabled recovery via fastboot and operate those things with adb. It's not ideal, but it works, and could replace the physical buttons.

Thank you mate,
luckily the power buttons doesn't work only on bootloader, but does work when running the rom, the volume up buttons works also, capacitive buttons work as well, but for the volume down there is no problem I can perfectly live with it, I can adjust volume in settings or just hitting volume up and then sliding the on-screen slider
Cheers

Glad to be of help (Albeit didn't really give a solution). You can also debug this with a button testing app. I never really looked for one, but I'm sure you can find one if you look for it.
Hey, the power button broke on my nexus s, YYAAYY
the problem is, that it is not just broken, but it is also sorta stuck... what i mean by that is, instead of not being able to press the power button, it is constantly pressed. this means i can not:
1. turn off the phone
2. use the bootloader, which is actually a huge problem, as i havent rooted the thing yet (or rather restored everything to factory a while ago)
3. lock the screen.
what now? i openend it and i cant figure out what is wrong, the button seems just fine on the motherboard, i can even press it, the internal contact seems to be stuck or something. is there any way i can fix that? can i disable the button on a hardware level entirely? or am i missing some way to make it work here?
please help

u need tools to do that, a hot airgun. Just pick up the solder that holds the button and button vl be in your hand so get the button replaced
