minfree settings for gaming on gnex - General Questions and Answers

hi
are there some preferred minfree values for gaming on gnex?
My idea is that i can open a game that requires a lot of ram,so i'd like know some values for the minfree.
Actually on my gnex i have the mpokang v.10 with, on boot,about 349 ram free.

I'm using that configuration on my samsung galaxy star (512mb ram) for gaming and tbh, it's pretty smooth.
P.S. I'm a HD gamer, I play games like Modern combat 4, NFS most wanted, Gangstar Vegas, etc..

i like using NScollab 1.0.xx it has the power of CM7 but toned down to look stock. usually updated every week or so. i have games and media mostly on my NS and it runs smooth even without over clock.

I would say stock coz it doesn't take up any memory like that of the custom roms. Just flash netarchy kernel to make it overclockable.

im currently running MIUI 1.4.22 and have 150 MB USED and 156 MB FREE, Total 306 MB , where the hell 206 MB if it has 512 MB , it is understandable if its total 450 MB - 480 Mb due to system read differently, but its only 306MB.
is there something wrong with my Nexus S i9020 ??
nope. some of the memory is being used by the android system and the android system only. meaning that it is locked and cant be used by any other application thats why it only shows a total of 306
Yeah I think so. If open apps will use some of those missing RAM o think.

stock and netarchy kernel for me as well works great for those 3d games. put the CPU to ondemand at 1.2ghz and it will run amazing (stock 1.0ghz alone was amazing)
**keep in mind that the most graphic intense game i play is need for speed shift

i can see that on my mem info of CM7 ROM only 345MB.
384 MB real , 345MB system read.
I can feel in true HD games, i used to use DeLL streak and playing Eternal Legacy HD, it cannot run while background apps running untill i kill all task and give me free RAM around 312MB . THe the game start perfectly.
On my Nexus S the game cannot run, just kick back to home screen, its like insufficient RAM ( it was not force closing ).
So i assume nexus S only has totally 512MB - 128MB = 384MB. CMIIW

that the game closes back to home screen has nothing to do with the hardware.
it only shows that the game,does not support 2.3.3 or/and the nexus S hummingbird CPU.
it kinda bug's me seeing how many stupid people are out there.that go like.
"hey the game doesn't work on me ****(any 2.3( updated from 2.2) phone,in this case nexus S,allot of users said this)it worked fine on my ****(any froyo 2.2 phone or snapdragon cpu)

Yeah, I'm on armv6 and I tried with and without audio folder. Audio slows it down way too much.

By using Chainfire 3D, the H.E. method and the XDA Data package for GTA 3 I was able to get nearly 95% lag-free play on my 800 MHz Samsung Admire by MetroPCS. For those interested,

Adreno 205 Vs Adreno 220 with Fpse openGL plugin

So as you can see in my signature, I've been implied into fpse for years, before Android existed, when it was FpseCE for Windows Mobile
For people who don't know, Fpse is the best playstation emulator for Android (and WinMo of course)
Fpse has just been updated with an openGL plugin, giving impressive graphics
But here is the fact: with an Adreno 205 (example! Xperia Play), the new openGL plugin is really fast
With mali 400, it has compatibility problems, some gfx glitches, but the working games are fast
BUT on the Sensation, as well as the Evo 3D, so our Qualcomm CPU + Adreno 220 combo, it's slow !!!!!!! (for me, and reported slow by every adreno 220 users on Fpse forum so far)
Example? => games in full 3D like Tekken 3 or time crisis are more than 50% slower on a Sensation than on a Galaxy S2, a Xperia Xplay, and every other device with Adreno 205
Time crisis is exactly 66% slower on my Sensation at 1.7 Ghz than on an Xplay
(in terms of Frames Per Second, displayed by Fpse)
Forget about Gameloft games, emulation is another field, much more ressources demanding, no need to comment to say you have Angry birds or GTA3 running smooth, it's totally different.
Trying some possibilities with Schtruck (Fpse developper), trying to change some memory allocation features with modified versions of the plugin, it was impossible to improve these poor results.
So how can it be explained??? How can a single core with Adreno 205 perform better than a dual core with Adreno 220? (remind: it's also twice faster with a mali400, faster with powerVR GPU, onlt Adreno 220 is slow!)
What differences are here between Adreno 205 drivers and Adreno 220 ones?
Any hint appreciated, since I now hate my Sensation
EDIT: if you have a Sensation or an Evo3D, and have Fpse latest version with openGL plugin, please try games like Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, or another full 3D game, not an RPG like Final Fantasy, without frameskip, and repport displayed FPS. If you can go above 60 fps for Tekken 3, tell me which ROM you're using!!
My inclination is to say that the explanation is HTC. Adreno 220 itself is a pretty good GPU. HTC f***** so much up with software with the Sensation that my bet is that it's something on HTC's end that is to blame.

True.harware-wise the Adreno 220 is much more powerful than the 205.
that's also Schtruck's opinion about it, the software, drivers, are full of junk.
But hell, I get about 20 fps for Tekken 3 on my Sensation when Schtruck gets about 80 !
yesterday, we tested Time Crisis 2 with same settings at the same time, he was getting 66% more fps on his Xperia Play, so depending on the games, the difference ranges from 1/2 to 1/4, that's way too much!
Did I mention that using CF3D doesn't change anything?
That really sucks! Something must be done. Schtruck will continue to look for a fix, he doesn't have an Adreno 220, I hope he will borrow one to plug the debogger while Fpse is running
i have an evo 3d and have been playing final fantasy ix which used to run terribly on version 0.10.37 for some reason. frameskip would make the game run at 60 fps however it would also make the animations all jerky. with the new version the game runs fine on soft mode but the graphics using the opengl driver are to die for! i noticed turning framelimiter off gives me around 10 more fps. i get an average of around 45-55 depending what's happening. it runs pretty well considering the graphical boost but it`s kind of aggravating knowing that adreno 205 owners are getting fps boosts! i hope this issue is fixed soon
My Xperia Play using FPSE with the opengl plugin is getting around 26-36 FPS on Gran Turismo 2 without any frameskip used, this makes the game run at approximately half speed, playable but slow motion, so no fun. With Frameskip enabled I get from 32-60 FPS, but its very choppy at times, so its like 55 on the straights, 32 on the turns etc, hard to play without feeling its having trouble.
Anyone else have numbers they can post? or advice on how I can get the smoothness and playability up so that I can enjoy the gaming with the OpenGL plugin.

Can you tell me your ROM (and Android base) ? So that I can compare to Schtruck's Xplay, he has really better results it seems.

This seems to have been true for years.
I remember reading an article a while ago about HTC's Windows Mobile graphic drivers and how poor they were even then.
If I find it I'll post it here.

Try different opengl drivers or a true senseless rom
There's a new forum thread on FPSE about OpenGL. Go to the FPSE forums and search for "Understanding FPSE and PEOpS OpenGL"
(I'm still a new member so I can't post links).
The issue with the 220 seems to have come up again, and doing a quick search in the fpse forums shows a couple people commenting on it over the last couple months.
I'm going to add it to a new section in my main post about hardware. Also, I'll see if I can get more info from schtruck and i900frenchaddict.
Question: how do you use a different driver? I'm not aware of anyway to change the driver on non-rooted phones other than updates from the manufacturer. And, on rooted phone, I'm not sure that different drivers exist - do they? I think the only option is other ROMs or apps like chainfire 3d

NOT EVERY GAME has that option so that you know ....need for speed most wanted, ultimate spiderman, batman the dark knight, and i could make a huge huge list with games that dont have gfx options. I have the same problem with the assasins creed pirates i have made a separate thread for this problem but i didnt find a fix. I searched with root in all its hidden folders and opend them with txt to see gfx settings even exchanged the files from my galaxy s3 i9300 to my note 10.1 n8010 and locked the write permisions but useless.... (note10.1 n8010 and i9300 have the same settings except the 10.1 has 2gb ram ) and i am so pissed because i can play it flawless with reflexions on water, 1270x720p resoluion, good textures, sun shafts , and screen sun reflexion on the s3 and on my note 10.1 wich has the same cortex4412 1.4ghz (1.6o.c.) mali 400mp gpu 533mhz o.c. (no reflexions, resolution is 800x480, no sun shafts, no light reflexion , low res textures and so on....) **** this **** i payd 23 ron (romania) 4 euro for a great game and i cant enjoy it on my tablet .....with the same android 4.1.2 and hardware...

Anyone noticed that one s can't play some of the more graphic intense games like FIFA and NBA Y2k? Other phone like Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 which has a slow CPU but had a more updated GPU can play the about games. I wonder is it because of the GPU. Anyone got any ideas?

I didn't try these games, but I can play Asphalt 8, Real Racing 3, Nova 3 and Modern Combat 4 smoothly with graphics set to max. Almost no lag when playing.
Which rom are you using ?

Well, i can't even found those games in the Google Play market. I assume must be the compatibility issues. I am using the stock one that come with the phone. I haven't changed anything.

Which Android version is installed on the phone? I played those games and some more graphic intense one real racing 3 and gta san andreas almost without any lag at maximum graphics. I was both on 4.2.2 with Sense 5 and 4.4.2 vanilla and didn't experience any problems. The GPU inside the One S is quite capable even in 2014
Mine's fine just get's it just heats up loads when playing!
Me too, I'm very angry with it. Why should htc one s have not these games while other devices less powerful can play them??
