3.5mm headphone jack - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How come no one knows if this is apple style or not ?
We're smart enough to flash ROMs but no one's smart enough to work this out!??
Apple = L,R,GROUND,MIC
Nokia etc = L,R,MIC,GROUND
edit: Do we not know how one single button is working ? --my guess is apple style jack with phone responding to mic-ground short for ending calls etc... although I don't have any accessories to test this theory.

That was already discussed here and someone confirmed that.
Try to search it a bit and youll find it.

I've ordered two accessories from eBay to work this out as I searched and couldn't find the information.
1. Nokia XpressMusic AD-57 headphone adaptor.
2. Generic iPhone headphone adaptor.
Both of these have a 4-pole 3.5mm male plug, button & microphone on a breakout module and 3-pole stereo female socket for headphone output.
I can confirm the (1) AD-57 does not fully work with the Moto G...
Results: audio in & out work fine but the button does not play/pause or answer/end call. Looking at the PCB (AD56/57_REV_1_0) I can see that it's a very nicely made accessory with shielded cable (4 wires & shield) running back to the phone to provide a floating shield surrounding the cord. It looks possible to very easily resolder the wires on the PCB effectively swapping the ground and mic on the 4-pole 3.5mm male plug.
I found the headphones must firstly be plugged into the adaptor, and then, the adaptor and headphone plugged into the phone. If the adaptor is plugged in first, without headphone plugged into it, output volume is only 50% and the button acts to raise volume to 75%.... and this leads me to think the Moto G configures itself --in software-- based on what it senses has been plugged in.
Next post by myself will provide results on (2) Generic iPhone headphone adaptor. I expect the audio to work based upon the Moto G's soft-switching and hope the button works also. ...If the button works then perhaps I'll resolder the Nokia accessory to L,R,GROUND,MIC.

I received the Generic iPhone headphone adaptor today and here's how it functions with the Moto G:
Like the Nokia XpressMusic AD-57 headphone adaptor it features a 4-pole 3.5mm plug and a 3-pole 3.5mm socket for connecting headphones.
Headphone & microphone work fine.
The functions via the single button are:
Short press button in standby = play/stop most recent media file or FM radio
Long press button in standby = Activate Google voice search.
Short press button with screen locked = play/stop most recent media file or FM radio
Long press button with screen locked = System Message: "Please unlock the device."
Short press button when call incoming = pickup call.
Long press button when call incoming = reject call (guessing this one as not tested)
Short press button when call active = mute/unmute microphone.
Long press button when call active = terminate call.
I think this is correct functioning.
My conclusion is that Moto G functions best with accessories based on the CITA (Apple) wiring standard as oppose to the OMTP (Nokia) standard.

'Hands Free' mic query

I've just got one of the HTC 3-in-1 USB charger/headphone affairs for my lovely new Touch Pro but have come across a stumbling block in my otherwise cunning plan - the idea was to use it as an easy 'handsfree' kit, plugging my car radio's cassette adaptor into the headphone socket and thus being able to charge the 'phone, take calls and listen to music safely whilst driving- a stroke of genius, I thought.
However, when the adaptor is plugged in, it disables the 'phones onboard microphone so that I can hear people but not reply, which kind of invalidates the point (although the music playback is great, but even then I can't use voice control either).
So, do any of you very clever chaps know if it's possible to turn the Touch Pro's mic back on whilst the 3-in-1 is plugged in so it all works as I'd like? Thanks very much in advance!
I've noticed that when the 'phone is the official docking port the mic works fine, so is it more likely to be a hardware issue with the USB cable wiring than a software setting in the 'phone itself?
UPDATE: Apparently I was wrong, I've just tried it again and although voice control works when it's in the stand, when I plug anything into the speaker socket it kills the mic too, so I'm back to square one.

BuiltIn Mic

Hi,
I bought a simple USB adapter to jack audio, see attached file, to use my Diamond as a mediaplayer.
I can hear a phone call across my car hifi but the built in mic is disabled.
I think that there is a setting in the registry to enable the built in mic, someone can help me?
Thank you
Luigi
If someone find a solution i'm also interesting!!!
I've tried some apps but no-one fonction to activate the mic with this cable.
It occurs because the jack adapter is not officially supported, and Diamond recognizes it as a stereo HF, disables built in mic and is trying to recept sound from HF mic (that is not present).
But yeah, it'd be nice to activate built in mic somehow ...
Where did you buy one of those! Like the name and make of it, but I can also tell you why its not working.
What you bought their is a simple adapter, not an amplifier. (Im sure amplifier is not the right word, but go with me) Basically, if you want it to work you need a device that changes the analog waves to digital waves of the usb, which by looking at that, doesn't do it.
If you're wondering were to get this magical device... well lenovo used to make one that came witha cheap headset.. but they stopped producing it a while ago.
You can buy one of these adapters:

[Q] problem using the p500 headset with PC

i have bought a 3 wire + ground connector and then splitted it into mic. and speaker connectors, so that it can be connected to the comp.
- i tried my nokia 5230 headset. everything worked perfectly. sound was stereo and mic was working.
- i tried lg headset. sound was mono and mic. was working
- now i kept the headset button pressed and tested. sound became stereo now, mic stopped working but volume in left speaker was less than that in right speaker. is it because the button is located on the left speaker wire?
well, is the headset provided with p500 a non standard one, unlike the nokia headset?
and how do i make it work in PC?

3.5mm jack: line in ?

Hi all,
Is there a way to use the 3.5mm jack on the top as a line-in or microphone port?
Would like to connect an external audio source to play over the Tab's speaker.
Have been looking for an app: no luck yet, any suggestions ?
THANKS,
V.
might be of some help
1: "Is there a way to use the 3.5mm jack on the top as a line-in or microphone port?" Yes this port uses a 3 stage audio jack if you have a audio splitter (split it to audio and mic = 2 jacks )you can use a male to male 3.5 mm jack (OR to a other port)this should work fine like mine i use this with gaming headphones
2.1 : Would like to connect an external audio source -- solution in step 1
2.2 : to play over the Tab's speaker.-- have not tryed playing voice over speakers but i have found these
I thinks this is what you want https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grace.microphone"]microphone it is the newest one i know of
This is a link to similar apps if that does not work Google search
If you want to make the 3 Stage splitter you wil need this diagram
3 stage audio Jack Diagram:
1 2 3 4 ______
< = = =|______|-------> Cable
1. Tip --> Left Channel
2. First Ring --> Right Channel
3. Second Ring --> Ground
4. Sleeve --> Microphone
Wiring Diagram:
1. Green --> Left Channel (+)
2. Red --> Right Channel (+)
3. Blue --> Right Channel (-),
Red-Blue(inside the shielded one) -->Left Channel(-),
Copper --> Microphone (-)
4. White --> Microphone (+)
required items
1x 3stage 3.5mm audio jack
2x female 3.5mm audio jack (no need for 3 stage standard is fine)
1x a peace of salvaged headphone wire or any other 6 core wire cut to desired lenght
Then you just solder one

Splitting the 3.5mm jack with microphone and speaker output - possible?

Hi All,
I was wondering if the below scenario is possible with any android phone.
- Plug a 3.5mm splitter into the audio jack (two female ends)
- Plug a speaker system (headphones, whatever) into one split port
- Plug a microphone into the other split port
Would the phone play audio (music, etc) through the headphones normally? If someone were to call, would the voice on the other end play through the headphones and the microphone work for me to talk to them through?
Thanks!
EDIT: Since the response has been overwhelming I went and tried the method above. Works perfectly. Thanks to... me *self high five*.
