[Q] Kernel and ROM - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, since I can't post in the Slimkat threat I open new one. I am very happy with Slimkat 4.4.2 except that the battery life is short. I did search but couldn't find answer to my question.
Is there a Kernel/s for Slimkat 4.4.2 build 3/4/5 that extends the battery life, and what kind of choices I have?
I will be very happy for your help.

I find the Devil kernel to work well with Slim, never having an issue with battery life.. I just recently did some testing on the build 5 and the battery life with both stock and Devil kernels was quite good (around 14-16hrs with 3+hrs of screen time)... There are few roms with this amount of battery life.. And to get a true representation of battery performance you need to have at least two full battery cycles.. There are other little tip/tricks to extend battery life a bit further, feel free to visit the link in my signature for some ideas on how your rom compares and for tips on battery life..

Hey that was quick Actually I did check out the CyanAOSP and sound interesting, but for now I will stay with Slim.
Just for information I compare the battery life with CM 4.3 and Slimrom 4.3. Using these ROMs the battery last 2 days for me. I do complete battery cycles after flash even if needed I use battery calibration app. I will check the tips from the link for sure. Just still not sure what is the appropriate Kernel/s for Slimkat 4.4.x. As far as I was reading not every kernel works on every Rom.

anyone else using the devil kernel notice any high temperatures ?

So... only Devil kernel for SlimKat 4.4.x ??? Where I can get it?

Check its kernel thread, there's a link in my signature that has it, or on almost any ROMs thread people posted links..

[Q] Best stable-fast ROM?

Hi everyone! I've one of the first ROM came out after the releasing of the kernel for our phone, it's not bad but sometimes seems slow (especially typing).
I was looking for something very fast and stable, I don't care so much about customization or overclocking.
Do you think I should think of came back to stock? Which rom do you suggest?
Thanks for any help!
at this moment , i suggest you KANGY-V8 by HAKA and mathkid95's Matr1x 15.0 CFS with Weathley + SIO , everything's good
Thanks! I'll give them a shot!
Stock gingerbread
I was actually looking for something similar myself(in terms of stability), but i actually do want a little more customizations and tweaks, i was going to try
CyberGR-MOD, would that be a good choice?

probably not , becuase i was using it before
it's good , but however , there some MOD like "search key for recent apps" and some themes from theme section , weren't able to be applied in that ROM ...
if you wanted these MOD, you have to do it yourself ...

Thanks, one last question though, when you were using it was it stable?
I have been using Codename Android Rom(used to be AOSP+)
I must say it one of the best Roms I have tried. I suggest everyone to try it.
I just registered at XDA but I have been following the Scene for a while. I have using this rom for more than a month. I was on nexus beam but its not as fast and stable as Codename android.
this Rom is great because:
1-Great stability
2-no reboots whatsoever
3-very smooth and fast(including typing) I used to have sluggish keyboard on other roms, not this one.
4-Great Battery life
5-AOSP so its built from scrach so its clean and has nice simple mods and tweaks
Check it out : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1463437
I also suggest using Eugenes speedy Kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401455
the Rom and Kernel above are just sooo compatible. I have the best android experience ever
Good luck

really nice work of HAKA and MATHKID95
KANGY8 or AndroidME or Android Beam.. cant go wrong with any of them..
I'm using too v8 by haka with matrix kernel 14.5 cfs
3 days now with good battery Life and no reboots! Rock and stable
A few things doesn't work for me on these rom:
-mms like others rom
- voodoo app doesn't saves settings if i reboot my nexus

I'm usin pete's bugless beast, never had reboots, freezes or something. It runs very smooth and fast, and battery life is great. I always have 2 days, with little usage even 3 days. I'm using steven garons kernel with default settings and bln on.
Apex 1.0.0 with Speedy 7. No problems at all.

I'm with imsailham except I'm using kernel Icup speed5.
Still not as fast as the good old Oxygen based on Gingerbread but the improvement on ICS makes this ROM the top
Here we go my screen shoot off my battery using haka v8 kernel matrix

Here are some screenshots, too.

Most stable custom rom on the Nexus S?

I've tried MIUI and Cyanogenmod but they seem to be a little unstable and drain the battery. Do you guys know which rom is the best for smoothness, stability and long battery life? Thanks
Bugless Beast. Enough said.
I won't say it's the best, because everyone has his own opinion.
The best way is to try them all.

I can say that the 1.4 version of CodeName ROM is the most stable! Now they are in 1.6 but it's laggy and we all expected to be the most stable again in the realase of 1.6.5!
And about the kernel, I will choose or Air Kernel or Matrix Kernel, are the best!
Regards,
Urko
PS: Can anyone thanks me? I can't release my Rom on the Dev section because I don't have 10 posts thanked! Ahh and the post was made a little bit with Google Traductor, I'm 16 years old.. xD Sorry
+1 for Bugless Beast

My wife's phone is100% stock and still has small bugs, freezes, and other issues.. So a 100% stable jellybean is a myth.. Carbon tests faster than Gamerz, but isn't as smooth.. I am using Thinkingbridge and am nearly as fast as Carbon, but haven't had any bugs (yet).. The latest Devil kernel is fast and stable at stock speeds, but I find over volting it when over clocked is better than stock voltages (on my phone).. At stock voltage when over clocked I have had random reboots, but not when over volted... Marmite is also fast, but I haven't found a stable over clocking method for it.. Both deliver good battery life and performance on any compatible rom...

@Setting.Out so u recommend carbon and devil kernel? And about random reboots yes i got that alot on slim rom but gamerz rom not much so u know how to avoid that?

Don't use your Nexus S as if it's a Galaxy Nexus. It's a 2010 phone.

Each ROM is different and reboots are caused by tons of possibilities either kernel or ROM, and overclocking and using tweaks/mods only increase these possibilities...
I've tried Carbon but have had a couple bugs in previous builds.. I'm testing the latest Carbon and it feels nice and no issues thus far
Thinkingbridge is fast and stable and I had no bugs or other issues..
And yes, Devil is my favorite kernel..
Also if you use devil tools or similar app, you can overclock the devil kernel to a fairly stable 1512mhz (live oc 108%). Not recommended for long periods of use!

i mean what is better than gamerz rom and fast and stable FOR LONGGG USE like till key lime pie is out whats the most stable and fast rom and what kernel to use with is
try jellyshot with marmite. i have tried every rom and for me is the fastest and most stable rom
Jellyshot + marmite 7.3 is 100% stable but does not have many mods, carbon + marmite is very fast and has a lot of mods
I was just using the old 4.1.2 Hellybean with a current Devil kernel and the experience was very nice, stable and smooth.. the battery life was also quite good, averaging around 20 hrs with 5 hrs screen time!!

bottom of the page.. Enjoy
I tried countless ROMs, Kernels, Tweaks and Mods, and i have to say that im most satisfied with ThinkingBridge (SB4) and Devil Kernel (3.0.71) plus Final Script (3.1) from "The War Against Obscurity" thread posted by Setting.Out. Its clearly subjective; many people, many opinions. But you surely have to give it a shot!

Best Battery Backup on Osprey

Which Custom ROM you guys feel gives the best battery backup for Osprey ??
Resurrection remix ...on moderate use..5 1/2 SOT

For just battery considered? CM12.1 with a solid minimalistic kernel of it must be an aftermarket one, the stock rom is probably the best though (add a solid kernel and tweak it its even better).
But for a featured ROM, Turbo with Squid kernel using Lionfish governor gave me the best battery, although it wasn't really noticeably different, those were the numbers GSAM gave me.
TBH, no rom itself is the cause of poor battery life, ever single ROM for the G3 uses the exact same base of CM12.1 for Lollipop and CM13 for Marshmallow for all aftermarket Roms, in general, if one ROM has a problem or strength, they all do. The only device tree we have is CM based, so other than a few customizations and toolchain selection, all roms for this device are the same.

I had been using CM 13 and Hurtsky Kernel since the release. I've had a hard time with that and now I moved to Identity Crisis which is based on stock and Kaminari Kernel. The performance is mind blowing and I get around 5 hours of SoT with heavy usage. UI is really fast and fluidic.
Here's the link to the ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/rom-identity-crisis-6-t3324595
And here's the link to the Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/orig-development/kernel-kaminarikernel-v2-0-t3345716

I used krexus caf and hurtsky's kernel and i gave around 4-5 Sot
i'm on the latest from DirtyUnicorn(10.6) with Valkyrie V6(hurtsky's) and i get 4-5hrs SOT on mobile data with sw2w enabled for a full charge (though i never let my battery go below 50%). NO xposed(greenify+amplify) installed. though i have disabled most of the non-essential services with MyAndroidTools.
