camera upgrade possible?

This device being easy to get into:

I wonder if anyone has thought of upgrading the camera to something like the Galaxy S3 8mp variety, may have a look into this unless anyone else has already?

Pimp my rom/your rom has a feature to change resolution to 8mp. I don't know if this works for 10.1 though and it doesn't add 1080p video recording.

Cheers, thanks for the info, although If the lens / sensor combination is inferior on the 10.1 note compared to the galaxy S3 then there wouldn't be any point upping the resolution, if anything it may make the image worse as it will just be upscaling.
I had a look round for a compatible alternative camera module but found nothing, I was hoping the one used was common to other devices but that isn't the case.
I wonder if its possible to add a 3G module with sim slot

I don't really need it, however if the module is cheap and just clips into place like most other parts then why not?

First of all i am rookie please don't mistake by this question, I have a serious doubt, How can you improve camera quality from 8 megapixel to 12 mega pixel with custom rom's. Camera is a hardware right how come it is possible?

It cannot be improved from 8 to 12mp!!
Who whispered this?
They are just tweaked to some extent for clear view, more clarity, less lags, etc.
Like changing colors, saturation, etc.

Hi,
See this topic in xda forum "[ROM][JB 4.1.1]Suvi ROM _V6 Jupiter_ [25 Mar 2013]". In here that guy who build the rom told it that the camera is patched to 12 mp and the front camera to 1.3. That's what i asked.
I think he improved the 8 mp camera quality into 12 mp camera quality by tweaking, when we compare the picture quality it will equal to the 12 MP right? (Is this what is mean in that page right?)

Its not really and upgrade, but you still can see the difference when you use your camera from stock and upgrading to V6 Suvi rom. It is much more clearer.

It is possible.
It is not about upgrading from 8MP to 12MP.... It is something to use the hardware at its real capacity. The camera installed on A110 can capture images up to 12MP but Micromax has limited it to 8MP. Refer to the device being sold as 'Mobistel Cynus T2' in Germany...it has same hardware all across...no change at all...and has a 12 MP camera.
So cheers! You can have it.

when i tried to increase the camera quality from 8MP to 12MP, it just did not function properly.. following are the 2 pics taken from both the camera options we get after installing 12MP camera patch..
the colors just get changed.. (The image with green tint is captured using 12MP, and blue one is the original pic, using 8MP)

This is a common problem. Just go to settings of camera after launching it and click on Restore Defaults. This will get your camera back to normal. This is just a one-time effort you need to do after patching 12MP camera.

4k recording on Lollipop

Hey all, I haven't heard much about camera specs in all the excitement about Lollipop and now PA on the G3, I am on CM12 now and loving it but I miss having 4k recording on the camera... Any way to bring this back? Maybe a camera app port? [emoji1]

That is the only reason I went back to a stock based ROM. Love my camera.

I know this is something we can do... We have some great developers here... WINK WINK!... That is the only only thing it is missing. I'm going to try some build.prop edits to see if it will work, but I doubt it.

Agreed, CloudyG3 is great. It's my go to ROM unless I'm on CM12, I had to flash back today because I'm having WiFi issues on CM.

Aosp ROMs always have bad cameras they use googles **** camera

I have had many phones...Nexus, Touchwiz, Sense, and now the G3...it cannot be done.

But the ability to record 4k is in the hardware, right? If it were strictly a software up conversion then yes it would be an issue, but if it is native to the camera hardware it seems like the camera app would just need to have the support for that feature of the sensor...

I sorta think its silly to record in 4k without even having a 4k TV to play it against. I honestly can't justify it, so I'll stick with the pros of having cm12 instead. Fwiw the Google camera isn't all that bad really. If I need pro photos, that's what my Sony nex is for.

But we do all own a phone that plays 4k... And if you down sample to 1080p it retains a lot of sharpness and clarity not possible from strait 1080p recording.

This is the thing right here. I want to be able to record in 4k so that I can downsample/crop/frame a 1080p edit of that footage with amazing clarity and control.
I desperately want to be able to do this on AOSP on the G3, but the going, thus far, is slow.

Recently YouTube brought back 4k playback. Check out the GoPro channel. Sweet stuff. They need an LG G3 channel...

I don't think the quality in stock vs Google camera can ever be matched sadly.

Stock camera is ages ahead of the CM Camera (Googles), there is just no comparison, once you look at the photos on a big screen you notice the lower quality on the Google camera photos., also with CM you will loose:
Laser Focus, 4K video recording and Slow Motion

If your recording in 4k only to convert to 1080 because it looks better it's because your editing software isn't doing it's job. I've tried it both ways and get the same results. And yes unless you're filming for a professional job that will use cinema standards or own a 4k TV recording in 4k just takes up too much space for no reason. I also recommend waiting quite a few years before attempting to get a useless UHD TV.

Nexus 5 camera update from LG G2

Story:
I broke my nexus 5 camera and replace it with LG G2 13 MP camera instead of using original 8 MP module.
Nexus 5 and G2 have same Chipset "Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800" and similar motherboards (camera port is same).
So I had no problems to fitting everything together.
Problem:
After this my camera app crushes when I try to use main camera. (when I use front facing camera everything works).
Question:
As I understand Android uses isolation layer (HAL) to separate Android Camera API and Camera driver layers.
I need to update Camera Driver and HAL will do the rest. At this point it is using old camera driver and camera app crushes.
How can I get LG G2 camera driver and how install it to my nexus 5 ?
Android version is 6.0.1 marshmallow.

This needs a dev's attention.
Also, the ISP may not be able to handle the camera modules output.

Nexus 5 has camera.hammerhead.so inside /lib/hw/ so at least you have to replace it with the one from LG G2 (remember to set same file permissions) to have a chance to make it work and import settings from media_profiles.xml to support bigger resolutions but there could be a lot more, and to improve compatibility flash Lollipop 5.0 on your nexus 5 and get files from LG G2 Lollipop 5.0

Hello, we have so great phone, but i want to sell it! one reason is that - word is talking about Google camera, which have amazing Hdr+ and Best portrait mode... Developer @B.S.G ported this camera for Xiaomi and after other develepers made mod versions for other phones (this mods is working almost at all phones), and this two amazing Mode (portrait, Hdr+) is working great and bad cameras with Gcam mod are shooting great pictures! We have so good smartphone, but camera is not so good that it must to be! And we can't use Google camera mod, because our phone have not full support of Camera2api And no one can to Port this great Camera for XZ Premium users But maybe there is someone who can help us to enable camera2 api and make Gcam mod version for us, it will be great and I think it will be work at our device very good....
I'm sorry for my bad English and I hope sony will make better smartphones, with better camera and design!

Believe me, sell the Xperia. Buy a 150€ Xiaomi, and I am totally sure that with Google Camera you will have a super camera, better than any smartphone, near to a reflex... :laugh::laugh::laugh:

I have XZ Premium, and i took with this phone great pictures.
But if google camera will work at xz premium, we can take amazing and sharp portrait.

No, I don't need xiaomi, now i have second phone Mate 10 pro, I won it At Huawei competition and this smartphone have good camera. I just want to say, that from childhood i'm Sony fan and i want, that sony have better camera and Possibilities, than other smartphones!

Yo dude google camera is indeed improving the picture you took with your smartphone, in fact it's a lot. Take a look at this video comparing <€150 Xiaomi phones with stock camera, Ported google camera, and Google pixel 2, and you can see that the result is night and day compared to the stock camera app, and even matching the photos taken with the Google pixel 2! So don't underestimate this app, it's ported and wanted by many community for a reason, it's not just a ****ty apps in play store, this is the app that makes the google pixel known for its camera.

The google cam version is 5.1.018.177470874.
HDR+ thing doesn't work, in fact the app is detecting my phone's rom as custom ( my phone is NOT unlocked or modded... Yet)
There's no "Portrait mode" but instead the "Lens blur" mode which is actually the same? Correct me if im wrong
The app itself runs smoothly, no crashes. Just like the stock camera app. Just tell me if you want the link though. And i'll try to make comparisons between the stock camera app and google cam app soon. (My connection is so bad rn i can't upload images)

Yeah i forgot about that. It is funny that the primary cameras max is only 8mp but the secondary cam is 13mp max

There is standard google camera, but hdr+ and portrait mode is not there just lens blur and it's take time to take portrait or something. I found thread about unlock camera2api, anyone tried unlock it?

Sadly you need root for that , which is not attainable right now without unlocking the bootloader.

Lack of RAW mode is a real turn off on this Phone, my old Lumia 950XL took amazing photos and had an insanely powerful flash. If I'm completely honest, the camera and flash are the weakest part of this device so I can easily see why folk want to try and mod it. Actually, in an ironic twist, the screen delivers a brighter flash then the actual flash, to bad its the wrong way around to help the camera.

It is very sad that such a good smartphone would turn into this huge disappointment. Most of the camera apps that I've used are Laggy and use only 8mp

Maybe there is someone, who can active full camera2api? And make gcam mod for sony?
