[Q] Seeking general knowledge - General Questions and Answers

Are the bluetooth, wifi, brightness problems in android devices are related to the ROM or the hardware?

They can be either. If you're running an OEM ROM then it's more likely to be hardware. If you're using custom ROMs, especially nightlies, it's more likely firmware although never rule out hardware.

...or user error. Especially when rooted, you can easily break stuff by simply freezing the wrong app in TB you think is unnecessary.

So if it is a rom problem can it be corrected by flashing stock roms by odin and what is the chance of me bricking the phone if i do so?

In theory, yes. Although I tend to stick to flashing through recovery. There's always a chance you will brick your phone but if the process is done correctly then the chance should be minimal.

at present i dont have any recovery. How can I create a recovery?

Recovery, for example, ClockworkMod Recovery is a step in and is created through in the process of rooting.

are the firmwares at sammobile good?

Lots of support for older devices such as S2 and especially S3. Not so much since then besides Note 3. Should see more as people's 24 month S3 contracts run out and turn to newer devices.

I want my Note 3 back.

First of all apologies if this has been asked or spoken about before.
I want to go back to my previous firmware MJ3, after the update I feel like my Note 3 is gone it literally feels like a different phone.
I have friends with the same phone irl and they say the same thing.
And also alot of people here seems to feel the same in various threads.
The battery is drained after 1 day and before it could take up to 3 days for the battery to totally die.
Is there any way at all to downgrade or flash an older version, I would really want the previous version, I so so regret updating it to the latest.
Any good suggestions or comments will be appreciated.
Cheers.
Try factory reset it might fix it

What are you ruining now? I'm using the latest and it is just the same if not better than out the box, but I've done wipes etc after any major change.
As suggested by the first reply, try a reset.

Did you experience issues with your battery performance after the update and therefor did a factory reset?

Most probably the bootloader had been updated. .. which means you won't be able to flash older firmware now. I can get just about a day on mj7 which is good enough for me

Same here! Calibrated my Phone many times, no luck! Was already thinking of buying a new battery... I will do TOTAL wipe tomorrow, including internal sd then flash Stock MJ7 I hope it gets better.
If you update via OTA, Kies or PC Odin. Sorry you can't go back as new bootloader is not compatible with MJ3 firmware.
If you update all the while via Mobile Odin, then yes as Mobile Odin never update bootloader.
Just finished restoring all my apps and settings after a full system recovery. (couldn't wait hehe).
Will report back if I notice any significant difference in the battery life.
Btw can anyone give some advice on battery calibration?
Cheers.

Is this true? I never done ota on my note3. I rooted the phone just a week after i bought it. It was MJ1 if i'm not mistaken then flashed a costum rom using cwm. Does this mean i can flash an older firmware without worrying about soft bricking the phone?

If your phone already update to latest bootloader, it can't downgrade firmware to MJ1. I never try, but base on user report, you get bootloop only.
Mj7 is the best FW yet.
It has great kernel with battery tweaks.
Don't try to go back for older FW.
First you can't.
Second every upgrade has some fixes for more stability.
I have MJ 7. Its wonderful.
You need to di the following :
1- factory reset.
2- go to application manager and disable the unwanted Apps.
It will save your battery more coz you are not rooted so its the only way to stop and turn off some craps apps.
3- wifi:
Go to advanced options and untick the allow scanning option and put your wifi as never during sleep.
Check your battery life then.
It will be double..
I Promise.

Just to be clear, if your gs3 has the official 4.3 on it, you CANNOT unlock the bootloader. You WILL brick your phone if you try.
Safer not to mess with it at this point imho

Nothing you can do right now as far as custom rom. Currently a few folks are working on a patch for safestrap in order to flash custom rom (currently only able to flash custom TW rom). You can follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2618887 to see the status.

I have just received a replacement phone. I have gone about the ways I rooted previously and none of them are working. This did NOT come with 4.3 from the factory, and the 4.3 update is not installed. I reverted back to stock from android recovery, so 4.0.4 is on there right now. But no matter what I do, whether it's the one click method, the GS3 toolkit format, or manually trying to gain root through recovery, nothing works. On the "downloading" screen that you need during use of ODIN, it says "SECURE CHECK FAIL", and it'll either have "boot" after it, or "kernel". Anyone have any ideas? As of this moment I have no working phone. Looking for some help asap. Thank you guys.

Try to Odin flash factory 4.1.2 and see if the secure check turn to "enabled". If it's then try to root again.
I just Odin flashed a stock 4.1.2 ROM actually. It's booting up normally now. It honestly seems like they added a layer of protection on the newly distributed handsets. I will try to go through the normal 1 click method again and see if that works. How would I check if the secure check is still enabled?
Actually, no, it's still 4.0.4 but I'm going to try the same thing just with a different 1 click method.
Looks like the really old way worked. With the ez-unlock and ez-recovery. I had to completely demolish what was there when it was sent to me, though. So anyone who gets a replacement, the best bet is to flash a fresh 4.1.2 ROM or 4.0.4 ROM immediately, boot back up and go from there.

Q: do I need root to downgrade android versions?

Verizon of course crippled my phone with the Ota of 4.3 I took.
I've lived with this looks g enough. Random lockups, needing a better pull. Camera failures.
I don't want or need to mess with root it just want to go back to my last stable build, whichever it was.
Can someone direct me there? Do I need to use Odin?
Where can I find safe original firmware?
Thanks I'm advance.

You can't downgrade, you're stuck with 4.3 because of the new bootloader.
You can install safestrap after you root it with saferoot. That will allow you to install 4.3 TouchWiz roms only.

Okay.
Are there any roms thus far that are t garbage?
From what I've read the issues I have effect most of the galaxy line.
So then.
1. Obtain root
2. Install a bootstrap that allows a custom rom in spite of the relocked bootloader?
I presume these guides exist here. I'll research them.

Is rooting safe?

Why would it be useless? The big concerns are making sure you perform root correctly, making sure you get updates here vs. expecting the OTA on a rooted phone, and warranty-related issues (warrany is void once rooted, which is easily detected). Otherwise, you end up with more capability, not less. Shouldn't be a problem...
So rooting phones in the future shouldn't cause a bricked phone?

it should not unless you maybe flash a new app that requires root like flashing fonts have a chance of possible bricks, but if you let them sit at the current rom they are on and becareful with what you download and use you should be fine so i have bricked twice out of my 16+ devices and they are from Flashing the wrong rom.

Before you mess with your device too much, make sure you are comfortable flashing the stock firmware. Some OEMs have a special tool for this or you might have to use something like fastboot. Once you have root, you will probably want to install a custom recovery. Make sure you know how to create and restore a nandroid back up. Most problems can be fixed by restoring a back up and most of the others can be fixed by reflashing the stock firmware.

I just now am getting familiar with what an RUU is and from my understanding so far there's 2 types? 1. radio upgrade unit & 2. rom upgrade utility. Which is yours? I'm not really looking forward to flashing roms atm, just looking for something quick like flashing some firmware that doesn't overwrite my entire system partition 'IF' possible. If not then am I stuck with flashing what appears to be a new rom? Or do I have another option? Thanks for reply!
Edit: Also I forgot to include that I'm S-OFF with bootloader unlocked & permanent root w TWRP recovery, would this act like one of Samsungs crappy OTA's and re-lock my phone IF it was the ROM thing I mentioned above rather than just Radio Firmware?

And ruu is an ruu. It is both the stock rom and firmware included. There are reset parameters that a factory reset on stock recovery can do that twrp etc are not.
This will not affect your lock or s off status and it's pre rooted. Also, there's not really "permanent root" on any phone. More so with s off you have the ability to flash su and root.
